brilliant fun.......2006-05-25
Great book for kids - my kids loved it...very funny, as you'd expect from the son of Eric Morecambe, and narrative-driven, which was the greatest pleasure of all.. It's a good yarn and has two more books in the series.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent introduction for young readers to the cinematic Dracula.......2005-08-26
There is certainly a good news/bad news aspect to the opening chapter of "Meet Dracula," a volume in the Famous Movie Monsters series. The good news is that Charles Hofer provides a fairly detailed summary of the classic 1931 Universal film version of "Dracula" directed by Tod Browning and starring Bela Lugosi. The summary runs ten pages, although about a quarter of that space is taken up by photographs of Lugosi as Dracula with Dwight Frye's Renfield and Helen Chandler's Mina Seward (but none of Professor Van Helsing). Hofer covers all of the key details and some of the key lines from the film (e.g., "I am...Dracula. I bid you...welcome"). The bad news is that you have to wonder why young readers would see the movie after they read the entire story. But let us proceed as if the glass is half full, and this is a recap for those who have already seen the film or exactly what is needed by kids who cannot see anything filmed in black & white.
The second chapter of the book looks at the film history of Dracula, going back to 1922's "Nosferatu" and then covering the background on the Universal film. There is a side bar devoted to Lugosi, but Hofer covers Browning's work as a director (including a photo of him with the cast of "Freaks," for which Hofer earns bonus points). We even learn some of the ways in which "Dracula" was actually a groundbreaking film as well as the critical response. The third chapter covers the myth of the vampire, beginning specifically with the Slavic and Romanian vampires before moving to the vampires of Victorian England in which Bram Stoker wrote his novel, "Dracula." There are no specifics on the novel (talking about the narrative style or the key differences between teh novel and film would be appropriate), but there is a sidebar about Vlad Tepes, the "real" Dracula.
The last chapter titles itself as a look at the legend of Count Dracula, but this is really a look at the cinematic history of the character since 1931. The initial focus is on the other Universal films in which Dracula popped up (e.g., "House of Frankenstein" and "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein"), as well as the Hammer films with Christopher Lee as the count. Hofer touches on the parodies (e.g., "Billy the Kid Versus Dracula," and "Blacula") along with more tradition films (e.g., the 1979 "Dracula" and Francis Ford Coppola's "Bram Stoker's Dracula"). In the back of the book you will find a Filmography listing over two-dozen Dracula films from "Nosferatu" to "Van Helsing." A Glossary explains key terms from "allegory" to "vengeful," and then there are some web sites and books provided as sources of more information, and Hofer specifically recommends five of the aforementioned films for viewing.
Yes, I would like to see Hofer at least spend as much time on the original novel as he does on the legend of Vlad the Impaler, but this book is clearly focusing on the cinematic Dracula rather than the literary. On that score Hofer covers a lot, provides key details, and when he puts together his list of suggested viewing he is on point. Besides, this book is an introduction to the world of Dracula and vampires in the movies and elsewhere, so young readers will have a good foundation to move on to more comprehensive looks. Who else do you get to meet in the Famous Movie Monsters series? Well in terms of the classic creepy creatures from the Universal movies in addition to Dracula there is Frankenstein, the Wolf Man, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon (if you go by the Universal Legacy series of DVDs the only one missing is the Invisible Man). Other volumes are devoted to King Kong, Godzilla and the Blob. With that last one we get up to the 1950s, basically we are talking classic black & white monsters and not descending to the depths occupied by all those splatter series of slasher films.

Book Description
Neither immigrants nor ethnics, neither foreign nor "hyphenated Americans" in the usual sense of that term, Puerto Ricans in New York have created a distinct identity both on the island of Puerto Rico and in the cultural landscape of the United States. Juan Flores considers the uniqueness of Puerto Rican culture and identity in relation to that of other Latino groups in the United States -- as well as to other minority groups, especially African Americans. Architecture and urban space, literary traditions, musical styles, and cultural movements provide some of the sites and moments of a cultural world defined by the interplay of continuity and transformation, heritage and innovation, roots and fusion. Exploring this wide range of cultural expression -- both in the diaspora and in Puerto Rico -- Flores highlights the rich complexities and fertile contradictions of Latino identity.
Download Description
As the populations of Latin American and Caribbean background in the United States proliferate, it becomes all the more important to understand the distinctions among nationalities and regional groups. To this end, Juan Flores investigates the historical experience of Puerto Ricans in New York. He reflects on varied areas of cultural expression by Puerto Ricans in the diaspora against the background of contemporary debates in Puerto Rico and recent developments in cultural theory. Close studies of urban space and performance, popular musical styles, and Nuyorican literature highlight the complexities and contradictions of Latino identity.

Had him as a teacher.......2007-01-12
If you're at all interested in Latin American culture you'll love this book and he's an amazing person. He'll tal kto you forever about the subject and he's highly intelligent.
A five rating, but with a footnote........2000-12-13
While Juan Flores is perceptive in his discussion of the Puerto Rican component of Latino culture, and discusses other major critics like Perez Firmat and Stavans, I was frankly surprised not to see any discussion of William Luis's Dance Between Two Cultures: Latino Caribbean Literature Written in the United States, which in my estimation is as important as those written by the critics Flores discusses. The value of Luis's study is that he addresses the same Puerto Rican community mentioned in Flores' book, but Luis also contextualizes this community by considering its relation to the Cuban and Dominican components of Latino culture. Anyone interested in understanding Latino literature and culture should also read Dance Between Two Cultures, which contains perceptive readings of Latino Caribbean literature unavailable in any other study.
Not just for Puerto Ricans............2000-10-28
The title of Mr. Flores' book might be a little deceiving for those who are not familiar with the subject matter. Mr. Flores uses music as a jumping off point for some very thought provoking themes that pertain (in my opinion) to all Latino's. Juan Flores goes from scholarly themes like colonialism to thoughts on the funeral of Cortijo and the history of the Boogaloo phenomena in New York City.
Mr. Flores makes you stop and think, then think again about issues you may have had preconceived notions about. I really enjoyed being challenged intellectually as I read this book.
I recently attended a lecture/performance (at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York City) of "From Bomba to Hip-Hop" conducted by Mr. Flores, music historian Rene Lopez and Mike Wallace (who won a Pulitzer Prize for his book, "Gotham.") True to form, it was a very unique, educational and entertaining experience.
A book that needs to be a major part of contemporary America.......2000-09-24
As a beginning graduate student in Latina/o Studies, I have been asking myself a simple question over and over: "Where have I been?" I have gone through public education in the United States for 17 years of my life, and have only recently found that there have been people writing since the start of the 1900s about the issues, experiences, struggles, and passions that I have thought were uniquely mine. Piri Thomas published _Down These Mean Streets_ in 1967. I just read it this past summer, my mother--right after I gave it to her. And the thought that has wondered in is, "why wasn't I told about his book earlier?" Is Piri Thomas' experience, a bond with African American culture that Juan Flores addresses in his book, such a marginal experience in American life, that it took a suggestion by Amazon.com for a man with 4 years of university education to be aware of the book? As the population of Latino/as in the United States grows to the levels of being the largest minority group in the country, there will have to be a shifting of Latina/o literature, theory, and any cultural products from the margins of American life to the center contemporary discussion. It is these products that Juan Flores probes and analyses with keen insight that places the Puerto Rican aspect of the Latino experience into mainstream intellectual thought. From "the Madonna incident" in Puerto Rico, to the ties that Puerto Ricans have with Hip-Hop, and the current status of Puerto Rico that he sadly calls a "Lite Colony," Flores' book is one that should be read by anyone interested in the affairs of American culture.

A Great Help For Any Werewolf:Wild West Storyteller.......2000-04-14
The Storyteller screen conveniently puts most of the frequently referenced charts and tables at the ST's fingertips, while providing plenty of room to hide dice rolls and ST notes. Frontier Secrets gives additional gifts, ideas about antagonists (information about Wild West Fomori), and plenty of other surprises for both players and storytellers. All in all, a great "supplement" for anyone running (or even playing) in a Werewolf Wild West game... even more so for the book than for the screen.

Absolute Beginner's Guide- Five Stars.......2007-08-04
This a great book for aquainting yourself with your computer. If you are new to the computer world as I was you will find this book very helpful in taking control of your computer instead of it controlling you. It covers both versions of Windows: XP & Vista. I would recommend it to anyone just starting out. I think it would be safe to say it could save you a lot of time in the longrun and maybe keep you from pulling your hair out!
Curious.......2007-08-04
I have been using a computer for many years and still did not understand all the task/programs I could have been using. This book has been extremely helpful working as a primer explaining everything very clearly and is still up to date with the Windows Vista. I would highly recommend this book.
User Friendly For the Novice.......2007-05-19
A great guide to using that computer you've finally bought. Clear and concise directions in layman terms that are almost fun to read and put to the test.
another winner.......2007-04-11
Having had some experience on computer I am not a complete novice but close enough. This book is in understandable language and very easy to implement. It has been the most helpful tool I have come across. Kudo's
Quite a well done .......2007-03-24
The nice thing about this book is that it is very clear that the author has 'been there, done that.' As he writes he talks about things like surfing the web and when he does he gives pointers about things like viruses and other malware.
Although I've been involved with PC's for a lot of years, he has much more experience in many aspects than I do. For instance, I've just gotten tasks to do with digital cameras. He has several chapters on working in this area that told me a lot about what I needed to do. I was also impressed with his discussion of the new Vista operating system. I haven't moved to Vista just yet, but it seems that sooner or later it will be required. Reading what he had to say gave me the heads up on the system.
All in all, quite a useful book.

Could have been better.......2007-08-09
This book lacks the organization and isn't a very good reference. If you need to learn VBA, this is a good book. If you need to learn and have a good reference, I would suggest you look for another book.
Little useful information........2006-12-28
This books has almost no useful code, and does not go into enough depth to demonstrate how to write any useful code. Fortunately, I found everything I needed on several VBA websites. I wish I had saved the $18.95...
I was disappointed with this book.......2006-10-20
I really was disappointed with this book. It lacks for complete examples and details that show how to implement and use VBA functions, commands, and procedures presented in this book. It was hard for me to implement and use most of the Objects, Methods, Properties, etc presented in this book. The readers need to see complete examples in order to understand how it works.
This book is suppose to be for beginners, however, it is a more descriptive book of VBA objects, methods, etc rather than a teaching book that takes the reader step by step through the learning process.
A lot of typos especially in Excel functions or commands which confused me and wasted a lot of my time trying to find the correct function. I think it is not worth buying it.
Pretty satisfied.......2006-07-26
I came to this book about two years ago after about a year of VBA programming in Excel. At the time I was mostly hoping to learn how to automate Outlook and Word from Excel. Although I enjoyed the book and found it to be fairly straightforward reading, I didn't walk away feeling I had picked up the skills to succeed with the automation tasks I was hoping to work on.
In coming back to the book on a few occasions since my first reading, I've found the book had more to offer than I absorbed on first reading. The organization is good; the code samples are practical and to the point; the style of writing ease clear and easy to follow.
Still, the book does seem to skip a lot of foundation and details. I'd recommend it as an introduction, with the intent of following up with a book that addresses whatever topics you are primarily interested in learning in greater detail.
Not for a real beginner.......2006-05-28
This author has a clear way of explaining the full realm of VBA using all Microsoft Office applications. The hard part is that its not really for the ABSOLUTE beginner. Another problem is that through each step of his writing he makes the assumption that you have a specific need for that specific portion of VBA's abilities and then goes on explaining it like your just going to be able to apply it to your personal programming needs. The sad part is that the author took no time to create a hands on approach so that you could understand and self apply. I would go with a different beginners guide.

GREAT.......2007-05-03
This book is great for beginners with no programming knowledge at all. That was me and this book is very easy to follow.
absolute beginner!.......2003-02-19
I bought this book because of the glorious praise it received on this website, as well as on others. I am definitely an ABSOLUTE beginner, and found the first four chapters extremely easy to read and informative. I was very much looking forward to Chapter 5 and beginning to program. The book DOES NOT provide a CDROM with the necessary programs, and if you are an absolute beginner like me, you probably have no idea where you can get these programs (except to purchase them all). I'm still bewildered. If the programs were available I would give a much higher star rating.
Wonderful "starter guide" to Programming.......2001-08-16
This book takes the subject of programming from a beginner's point of view and instructs its readers quite well. Starting with a basic understanding of what a computer is, what it can do with the proper software, and a brief history, it then goes on to describe a program's "anatomy." There's also descriptions of the early programming languages like FORTRAN, COBOL, even RPG and Pascal (which would later be the forerunner to C). And then on to "modern-day" languages like C, C++, and Visual Basic.
In fact, the book devotes much of its concept to Visual Basic (VB), stating that a lot of the concepts in learning VB can be applied to other programming languages. The book devotes several chapters about VB, along with numerous helpful diagrams that help to show the different concepts being described. Subsequent chapters take on other languages like C and C++, along with batch and scripting languages. I never realized how simple a scripting langauge could be to put together.
There's also a big section on "Internet programming languages," like HTML, DHTML, XML, Java, and Javascript. While they are only touched upon briefly, you still get a general idea of how each langauge works. While it may be a stretch to call HTML and XML "languages" per se, they are still obviously important to know if you plan to do any web programming.
This is an excellent book for a beginning programmer or even for a technical writer who wants to know a little bit about programming concepts.
One of the best beginner's guides to programming........2001-07-11

The material in Absolute Beginner's Guide to Programming won't help you get a job, at least not directly. You see, this book emphasizes QBasic, which is a very elementary programming language designed to help programming novices learn about the fundamental concepts of writing computer programs. The idea is that novices will be able to take the programming knowledge they develop under QBasic and apply it to more powerful languages that are better suited to solving real business and technical problems. (Such languages include C, C++, COBOL, and Java.) That said, this book does a good job of teaching the essentials of programming in the QBasic environment. It helps regular people start to think like programmers.
Author Greg Perry put this book together in 1993, when Windows 3.x was still standard and the Internet had yet to reach the popular consciousness. More importantly, object-oriented programming languages weren't as big a deal then as they are today--a procedural language like QBasic has less relevance now. Still, Perry's coverage of basic calculations, variables, loops, data structures, searches, sorts, and other fundamental concepts remains relevant today. He also helps get new programmers into the commercial mindset by explaining the importance of clear documentation and advance design work. Your biggest challenge in following along with Perry may be getting a copy of QBasic, but don't worry--many sites make the language available for free download. --David Wall
Topics covered: What computers are; how computers use programs; what programmers do; how to plan and write a program; and how to use variables, operators, loops, arrays, files, graphics routines, and other essential elements of the QBasic language.

Need this book and another!.......2001-11-25
You do need to have another book and THEN reference this one!! This book has very good explanations on how things work BUT it DOES NOT give you any FULL C coding examples except at the end -one long Blackjack game.
Good easy to understand.......2001-11-05
I bought this book in order to learn how to program. It was useful and easy to understand. It was a worthwhile purchase.
Professor backed..........2001-05-17
My professor, a thirty-five year veteran programmer, highly recommended this read as a supplement to the C course, Intro to Programming I am taking. It is well-written and much more concise than the factory text, which is written for programmers. I look forward to finishing the book and the course!
Thank you so much,Mr Greg M.Perry........2001-01-30
I am a beginner in C Programming and I really hate it until I read your book.Everything is so clear.I read many books about C Programming but the more I read ,the more I get confusing. In my opinon, your book is number one . Lienle
Well Written, But Out Of Date..........2000-12-06
This book is from 1993 and is not up-to-date. It has no coverage of Java whatsoever. The good news is that Greg Perry is an excellent author and has a more current book in the "Sam's" series, which is "Sam's Teach Yourself Beginning Programming in 24 Hours," so I would suggest that book instead. It is just as entertaining and a lot more current.
