Book Description
A fascinating analysis of the first famous American to erase the boundary between real history and entertainment
Canada, and Europe. Crowds cheered as cowboys and Indians--and Annie Oakley!--galloped past on spirited horses, sharpshooters exploded glass balls tossed high in the air, and cavalry troops arrived just in time to save a stagecoach from Indian attack. Vivid posters on billboards everywhere made William Cody, the show's originator and star, a world-renowned figure.
Joy S. Kasson's important new book traces Cody's rise from scout to international celebrity, and shows how his image was shaped. Publicity stressed his show's "authenticity" yet audiences thrilled to its melodrama; fact and fiction converged in a performance that instantly became part of the American tradition.
But how, precisely, did that come about? How, for example, did Cody use his audience's memories of the Civil War and the Indian wars? He boasted that his show included participants in the recent conflicts it presented theatrically, yet he also claimed it evoked "memories" of America's bygone greatness. Kasson's shrewd, engaging study--richly illustrated--in exploring the disappearing boundary between entertainment and public events in American culture, shows us just how we came to imagine our memories.

Tedious and Redundant.......2002-12-04
I was stunned by how a subject such as the Wild West shows could be presented in such a tiresome manner. The author makes the same two or three points over and over again (the meat of her book) and spends the rest of the book detailing lithographs and program covers -- copies of which appear in the book. I stuck with it to the end, but was frustrated by it being a bad read and a waste of time.
Buffalo Bill was a Major Stud Dude.......2000-12-11
This is an outstanding scholarly study of Buffalo Bill and his Wild West show. Kasson deals with her subject sympathetically and never leaps to politically correct judgments. Kasson not only offers a biography of Buffalo Bill and a study of the cultural meaning of his Wild West, but also a study of how Indians and other marginalized groups figured in the Wild West show. Excellent book. Buy it.
A solid must-have.......2000-09-04
After checking this book out of the library and reading some of it, we knew we had to own it. Kasson writes well for the serious amateur of the Wild West, and the scholarship appears solid. It's clearly a work of contemporary history-writing, in that Kasson is very attentive to how we re-tell our past to ourselves, how myths and celebrity develop. In this respect it resembles Paul Reddin's "Wild West Shows" (University of Illinois Press, 1999), which we also recommend. Readers who want to know what it was REALLY like on the plains will want to consult other books.
An important analysis of America's first celebrity.......2000-07-11
Joy Kasson uses the story of Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West show to tell us about the beginnings of celebrity in America. Tracing Buffalo Bill's life from Army scout through Wild West show impresario she reveals how Cody "created an American memory through entertainment" by bringing together Northerners and former Confederates in the final decade of the nineteenth century for a shared and comforting interpretation of American identity. The imperialist story the Wild West Show told was legitimizing to American's who wanted to view their destruction of native American life in their westward advancement as the justifiable acts by victims of murderous natives, now happily tamed as actors, rather than the other way around. She demonstrates how Buffalo Bill's thesis about western conquest by white Americans influenced the twentieth century interpretation of American history in many ways, not the least of which was the Boy Scouts, and particulary through the powerful genre of the motion picture, in which Cody's influence was seminal.
Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show promoters were among the first to manipulate the public through advertising and image building. Kasson has given new insight into a late twentieth century culture that produced such phenomena as an actor as president, spin doctors and focus groups, and in countless other ways blurred the line between performance and reality.
A book both scholarly and readable, Buffalo Bill's Wild West has broken new ground in our understanding of the beginnings of our celebrity culture.

Exactly what I needed.......2007-08-14
This book is great. It is divided into logical topics that address what I need to do my job on a daily basis. Easy to read, straight to the point. I highly recommend this book.
Excellent book, but there's a better choice.......2007-07-30
I've found that some reviewers say that this book doesn't give enough theory or examples are trivial or you can find that all in the Help. However, I believe that only advanced Excel users might be dissatiafied with "Excel 2003 Formulas". While that's true that it's not overloaded with the advanced theory (which is what professionals look for), it does give the beginners or intermidiate users all they need to know about formulas, and the tips and tricks offered by Walkenbach really help to discover the world of Excel.
However, on the other hand if you're interested not only in formulas, but you're also planning to study the Excel as a whole then I would recommend to get the "Excel 2003 Bible" of this author. The reason is that the "Formulas..." for the most part just copy the "Bible..." which describes usage of the whole Excel and has a lot more information than the "Formulas".
Excellent Excel book.......2007-05-22
The day I received the book, I started reading. The information is easy to understand and relevant. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants or needs more training on using Excel.
Excel 2003 Formulas.......2007-03-08
The book is a wonderful set of formula's but it was intimidating to the Novice, of which I am. It is well written, logical and extensive, just a little above my head. I hopw I have the willpower to read the book.
Not the best option.......2007-03-08
I have this and the Excel 2003 Bible. Don't waste time on this. Go right for Excel Bible. This one seems to be a duplicate with only a small amount of expansion. Excel 2003 Bible will help you through a lot more problems.

Download Description
The old "80/20" rule for software - that 80 percent of users use only 20 percent of a program's features - doesn't apply to Microsoft Excel. Instead, this program operates under what could be called the "95/5" rule: 95 percent of Excel users use a mere 5 percent of the program's features. Most of those users know that they could be getting more out of Excel by using more of its commands and options, but aren't sure where to start. Excel is big and complex, and most of its intermediate-to-advanced features are shrouded in the mysteries of mathematics, finance, and impenetrable spreadsheet jargon. This Business Solutions title demystifies the program's features and presents them in a jargon-free way. This book not only takes them through Excel's intermediate and advanced options, but also tells them why these options are useful and shows them how to use them in everyday situations and real-world models. This book aims to do all of this with no-nonsense, step-by-step tutorials and lots of practical, useful examples.

Excel Formula Fixer.......2007-08-28
.
I have been teaching Excel and other Microsoft application for twelve-years, and I still found new information in this book.
The information is from the basic to the "WOW, Who thought of that?" Working with and calculating TIME and DATE functions has always been a pain....pain solved Chapter 10. Automated time cards are a breeze.
If you already know a lot about Excel, but don't use all the features everyday, then this book will help get started quicker when you need to use seldom used functions and create really robust formulas.
I was so proud of one very complex formula I almost had it tattooed to my leg.

Excellent and instantly usable information.......2007-01-02
I consider myself an intermediate Excel user and amateur VBA programmer. However my knowledge of formulas and functions is lacking, so I purchased this book. Within the first few pages I was learning things about selecting ranges, paste special, etc that I didn't know before. The book explains many basic worksheet functions and also covers forms and controls, Analysis Toolpak functions, Lists, Advanced Filters, Subtotals, Solver and Goal Seek. Uses easy to understand examples to illustrate formula usage. It was able to explain Advanced Filter in a way I was finally able to understand. I'll have to read through the book again just to make sure I didn't miss anything, that's how much information was being conveyed. It does include some statistical functions and business modeling which was a bit advanced and isn't really much use to me, but overall it's an extremely helpful book. A great addition to anyone's Excel library and it will be at fingertip's reach for a long time to come.
A Warning Regarding the ODDL... and ODDF... Bond Functions.......2004-09-16
I bought this book to get the definitions of the ODDF... and ODDL... bond functions used in Excel, as the mathematical definitions of both these functions and the parameters used in them, as given in the MS Excel 2000 Help topics, are missing a crucial 10% of the needed text. Unfortunately, there are major errors in concept in the discussion of the Excel ODDL... and ODDF... bond functions in this book (July 2004 printing). The author appears to have guessed at how these functions are to be used and at the meaning of certain parameters used by these functions, and guessed horribly wrong. He has communicated to me that any changes to be made will be made on release of the next edition. I have no reason to believe that any other material in the book is incorrect. (A rating was required for this warning to be submitted.)
So much better than online help!.......2004-07-26
I got a copy of this book through a publisher I work with and think it's amazing. The author does a great job of making formulas and functions accessible and practical for the reader in a way that the online help is unable to do. Each description of a function comes with practical and interesting examples of how to apply what you've learned. This new series from Que is going to be a great addition to their lineup.

Excel Annoyances.......2005-05-24
Excel Annoyances ...
This book is made for those who have had one or more vexing problems with Excel. If that's you, the answer can probably be found here and lots more besides.
Curtis Frye is an established author, including several books on Excel. He has the book divided into chapters that deal with several categories of problems: Entering Data, Formatting, Formulas, Manipulating Data, Charts, Exchanging Data, Printing, and Customization.
His solutions vary from basic training on how to use a feature, to how to tweak things "just so." Each Annoyance is the result of someone's problem with an aspect of Excel. Since many people do not upgrade to the latest version of Excel when it's available, the book covers solutions from Excel 97 through the current Excel 2003.
One of the most interesting things I learned was the existence of a function that translated numbers into Roman numerals! I never knew this existed. That's not to say I would ever have any use for such a function, but it was interesting playing around with it. If you want to try it out, type a number in one cell and in another, type this formula: = roman(cell), where "cell" is the location of the number you typed. You'll see the result in roman numbers, as advertised. Slick! Someone once threatened to file his income tax return using roman numbers, just to make things hard for IRS, and this is a way it could be done. IRS would probably object.
Screen shots are used liberally in the book. These may simply be a shot of a worksheet but often a related dialog box is also shown. Occasionally a text box includes extra information that may be of importance for a subject.
One extra feature include in the book is reference to some time-wasters, also known as games. Each is an Excel version and is free to download. There's Pac Man, Arkanoid, BlackJack, Rubik's Cube, Tetris and more.
There are occasional answers using Visual Basic, but for the most part, the answers simply use the settings that are already in Excel. Most users never tap the full potential of Excel, and I'm no exception. I feel I am an expert, but I certainly learned a lot by reading this book and you will too, if you use Excel at all.
A New Format for Hints & Tips.......2005-03-21
At last, a computer book written, as I now think they all should be, by a professional comedian. This book is not written for the absolute beginner, but by someone who has used Excel enough to have a couple of annoying problems that they would like to have fixed.
The first Annoyance is "Kill Clippy." This was one of the most hated "innovations" in history. Even Microsoft eventually had the sense to turn him off in Excel 2002. But if you're running an older version, or if someone else using you're computer turns him on, here's how to get rid of him permanently. And for a joke he offers you a web site on "clippycide." That's what a computer book should be.
This goes on to nearly every aspect of working with Excel. Chapter 9 starts out:
Excel's basic functions haven't changed in years. Of course, Microsoft has to addd new stuff to give you a reason to upgrade to the latest version. In Excel 2003, that reason was support for XML."
XML is supposed to make it easy to transfer data from one program to another. Of course there are XML annoyances, one is that the XML that Access produces isn't necessarily readable by Excel. Oh Boy!
stomp the Paperclip.......2005-01-28
Ok, Excel is the dominant spreadsheet. No question of that. But it has some surprising "features" which this book calls annoyances. It gives a multitude of them, with fixes for all. (Another O'Reilly series might call these fixes hacks.)
Logically enough, the book starts off with those difficulties that can be met when inputting data. Many of you will applaud that the leading annoyance is the Paperclip, on which much verbal ire has no doubt been expended. So Frye forthrightly shows how to terminate this pesky little bugger.
Later sections talk about formatting, formulae, charting, printing and so on. The chapters essentially follow the main functional structures of Excel. Some features might not be obvious to you; depending on your expertise. But chances are that for the average Excel user, you'll get some good advice from Frye.
Well organized set of useful hints and pointers.......2005-01-15
This is a well organized and written set of useful hints and pointers for Excel. They range from solutions to difficult data analysis issues, to tips about graphing, pivot tables, and importing data from various formats, notably XML.
The book is organized into chapters around central Excel themes; editing, formulas, formatting, charting, etc. Each chapter has a set of annoyances with a description and a solution. These annoyances are sometimes bugs, and sometimes just difficult issues that reasonably advanced users will run into where the help is either insufficient or poorly written. The fixes are generally fairly short and contained within the bounds of Excel, though the book does point to external sites and software where appropriate.
Definitely a must have for the power Excel user.
