This has become one of my favourite books on incense.
It begins by describing the origins of incense, and the effects of burning incense, and then the methods and utensils for burning incense.
He follows this with the outlines for 10 different incense burning ceremonies, with suggested incenses, for a variety of areas - such as clearing and cleansing, sensuality, joy, harmony, protection, energy and transformation, strength, etc. These are also useful as inspiration for creating ones own.
He then goes on to explain the various planes of perception for incense, the four elements, and the centres of perception.
Next is the section on various incenses. Not exhaustive but covers an adequate range of, mainly, the more easier to obtain incenses. Each one listed with the origin, traditional use, notes on burning as incense, and fragrance message. He also includes any other names for the incense as well as the part of the plant, and corresponding elemental force, and emphasis. My only complaint with this book is that the pictures with each listed incense are all in black and white, making it a little difficult to fully familiarise oneself with the incense.
At the back of the book is a great resources section. The first broken up into the four elements and listing the corresponding incense and emphasis (listed as either mind, body, or emotion)with the 'fragrance message'. The next part being a list of incenses and suggestions for its particular purpose, such as anti-depressive, or diabetes, relaxation, sleep promoting, etc etc.
All in all, well worth the addition to the library of anyone interested in the use of incenses.

Very nice, trendy little coffee-table type book, with pretty pictures and a small amount of general information you could easily find just about anywhere. Not a book for the serious researcher in spite of the glowing reviews obviously submitted by friends and relatives. It would make a nice gift for a favorite aunt or grandmother or a pal met at the spa. Do not purchase, however, if you are trying to find serious and detailed information concerning the history, lore and making of rare or even classic incense blends or you will be sorely disappointed.

Just reading Gina Hyams is soothing in itself. I loved every part and every word. Big Sky meditation is my favorite part, but it's all wonderful, really. I love the mysteries of incense and read almost every book I can on the subject. This and The Book of Incense by Kiyoko Morita are my favorites of all of them.
This is a beautiful hardbound book with great color illustrations. It covers so many different perspectives on incense, from recipes for Egyptian Kyphi to a marvelous section of the Japanese incense ceremony and incense games. Anyone who loves incense will love this book.

This book captures the history and essence of incense, across its many traditions, better than any other I have read.
Gina really writes beautifully, but behind the well organized presentation and skilful use of words it is so very evident that a great deal of effort and writing integrity is at the foundation.
The photography and print quality is excellent, and I am really happy they chose the hardcover format.
This is one I will send to my friends in Japan!

My thoughts on this formulary.......2001-04-07
I really enjoyed this book, it had alot of information in it for the compounding of ritual incenses as well as some information on oils. Keith Morgan seemed to have had experience and success with all his recipies and formulas and the reader can easily see that.I especialy enjoyed the section on incense for the kabalistic tree of life as well as recipies for the different zodiacal signs. Mr. Morgan also had recipies for obtaining love for both straight and gay men and women. I own several of his other books and have found them all to be quite usefull to me in my daily practice. And I must say that the high priest incence is my most favorite of all....when I use it in my temple it adds such an air of mysticism to the ritual. If your wondering why I gave the book 4 stars instead of five, its because the author is a little redundant in his writion. At the end of each and every recipe in his book he writes the same instructions for storage and use. This is by no means a bad thing though and it shouldnt discourage any serious student from purchasing this title. Keith Morgan has made a wonderfull contribution to the Craft with this usefull, informative, and no doubt magickal book. Enjoy all who read and use this text. Blessed Be

This is an outstanding reference book for the avid Jewel Tea collector or merely a person interested in learning more about this fascinating company and its products. This work covers aspects of the companies history and products that cannot be found in other reference materials. There is an extensive assessment of product values in the book but one must keep in mind that the book was published in 1996 and those values may not hold true in todays market. This is a "must have" and is one of the very best reference books I've ever owned.

I feel like sending this book back and requesting a refund. Within a few minutes of reading it I came to the conclusion that CareerPress sorely needs to hire more editors and proofreaders. Within the first half of the book alone, I stumbled on so many pronoun disagreements (he-she, him-her) and other typos I had to stop because the errors made my reading speed so "jerk"-y.
A Must-Read for Jerks Everywhere.......2005-05-07
I stumbled across this excellent book while printing copies at Kinko's one day. It was more than just a coincidence with all of the problems I was having at work with micromanagers and their little cohorts.
I thought this book was an excellent guide to the types of jerks at work and ways to deal with them. The one problem I see with this work is that it won't be read by the people who really need to read it: the jerks themselves.
If you like this, read "The Digital Umbrella" to see just how nasty these Jerks at Work can get.
Too specific if you seek general information.......2005-02-20
The book will be superb help if you seek answers to the specific questions in the book. However, if you seek overview, or general insights, this is not it. The book is made up of Questions and Answers from the author's newspaper column. I found Crowe's book "Since Strangling isn't an option" far better for my goals. She offers wider insights to managing your own responses.

I found this book to offer no real-life situations or worthwhile suggestions. If I had the chance I would return it. The context of the book simplifies the situations workers deal with everyday.
