This book completely EXCEEDED my expectations! As a former journalist (who is now a ventriloquist believe it or not) I've always been interested in how and why gossip has grown in our news media.
I got THAT answer in this wonderful book written in a breezy, solid style that made it hard for me to put -- plus a LOT MORE.
Starting with Matt Drudge's meteoric rise, DISH backtracks to trace the growth in gossip over the years. You'll also find new revelations in here. In the end our news media (what it printed and NEGLECTED to print over the years) will make sense to you. And it reads like a novel. Some tidbits:
1. The overnight rise of Matt Drudge, using a computer his dad gifted him. Everything you wanted to know and what you didn't want or need to know (i.e. his alleged sexual preferences; media suspicions that he got some scoops through hacking) about him and how his lively internet column took over, confounded mainstream media and made him a huge multi-media star.
2. How the Hollywood studios along with fawning California politicos crushed Confidential magazine, the 1950s gossip sheet which dared to undermine the carefully-constructed phoney public relations images of many stars (some stars are named in the book).
3. Mike Wallace's pioneering role in bringing show biz to news, his fall from grace and professional rebirth on 60 Minutes.
4. The birth of the National Inquirer and why it's located in Florida (fears of problems from the Mob).
5. Why there wasn't more MAJOR NEGATIVE published gossip on the Kennedy administration (they virtually destroyed one person dabbling in info about them and many journalists were intimidated.) JFK's other marriage.
6. The OJ case, Elvis Princess Diana case, the gossip columnists of the 40s and 50s and their replacements, the explanation of why Rona Barrett had such a sudden rise and fall. The birth of People Magazine and it's influence on pushing tabloids to another level...which pushed the national media to a new level (or low?).
7. Hardball-playing p.r. and private detectives who contolled their clients images and staved off major scandals -- and how they do it (bullying, getting the dirt on and confronting critics and making sought after clients inaccessible to offending journalists).
This is a highly ENTERTAINING book, with lots of facts, quotes and info that you haven't read elsewhere. It's solidly written but an EASY read and you'll REGRET it when you come to the last page. It answered a LOT of questions for me about what "really" went on and why our news media is the way it is today. SUPERB!!!
Good but feels like the author rushed to print.......2001-07-19
I found "Dish" very entertaining as well as educational. I think the historical aspect is very good. However, after reading another reader review that criticized sloppiness with names (spelled wrong, first and last names transposed), which now does make me wonder just how truly careful and thorough the research was. The way I feel right now is that fumbling the names was not due to the author not knowing what she was writing about, but just that her writing (editing, proofreading) wasn't great. I did get the feeling that this book was rushed to print, which might have led to the name fumbling. The different chapters read like separate articles, without much of a transition from chapter to chapter so there wasn't a real cohesive feel to the book as a whole. I wish I could rate this book higher, because I think there is good content but it's not presented as well as it could be.
The best book on the gossip industry.......2001-06-01
If you read The National Enquirer, The Globe or Star weekly or enjoy gossip columns or shows like Entertainment Tonight, this book is for you. Full of history and detail, you get the inside scoop on how gossip is made and reported, and how it's changed the face of "legitimate" news organizations. It's a great read and very informative. I couldn't put this book down. Sure, stars complain about the tabloids, but wait to you hear celebrities' true role in it all.

I picked this book up on a whim and what a treat. Gossip, whether you like it or not, has definately altered the course of history. Dish definately introduced some concepts I would have brushed off as trivial in the past.

Not as lightweight as the title would have you believe, this overview of the growth of celebrity gossip is fascinating. The author chronicles the events which took gossip from a limited group of tabloids to the pages of some of the world's most prestigious newspapers as well as the surprising successful efforts of celebrities to control their public image.

This is hands-down the best book I own about using Photoshop! Eismann gives clear and concise directions for making selections with many of the tools that Photoshop provides. She provides files on which to practice, but also discusses the types of images that suit each method. Each section has enough depth to satisfy all levels of Photoshop enthusiasts. Can't recommend this highly enough!
For the professional.......2007-07-28
This is a book that could be both a reference and an amazing learning tool for deep exploration in using channels as a selection tool, and fine color adjustments techniques. I haven't completed the book and maybe never will but everything I have read sheds new or a different light on photoshop selection and adjustment techniques. This is for the proficient in Photoshop beginners probably will find this book opaque and frustrating. Skilled photoshop users will find this a rich source of information and inspiration.

This book is great! Lots of hands on tutorials and clear concise instruction with regard to using Photoshop masking techniques. I would recommend this bood to anyone interested in learning the power of Photoshop and wanting to be more creative in its use.

I'm from Holland and live in Spain. i did some beginners courses in photoshop but then it becomes difficult to find more advanced courses. I started to look at books, the first one I bought was from Deke McClelland but that is more a photoshop manual and not very useful as a learning book. Recently I purchased both books (among other of other authors) of Katrin Eismann and it has been a good investment. Very well explained, very usefull in the daily photography.

educator admires a text book about a difficult concept.......2007-02-21
As a retired pricipal, I love Ted LoCascio's book. It seems to me, that he studied how to write a textbook for beginners, which I mostly am, and experienced amateurs, which I somewhat am. i was floundering about how to use brushes well and how to layer well. The other books are not written in a logical, easily understood way that newbies can understand and practice. This book is the answer. Ted LoCascio has mastered the art of teaching Photoshop Elements through a text and how to use a teaching aid (the superbly organized and clearly explained cd, which is included.) I now have a much deeper degree of knowing how all the parts (selecting, layering, masking) fit together to composit a photo. He should give courses to would-be others in his field about how to teach both novices and experienced amateurs about Photoshop Elements in one clear, step-by-step book. WELL DONE.
Photoshop Elements on steroids!.......2006-11-15
As an avid user of PE and having seen a variety of lessons and partial tutorials on the use of layers in PE, I was grateful to find Ted's book where everything is in one place. It is well organized and detailed, allowing me to follow along with ease. I expect it would be a boon for a newer user also, especially the included CD-ROM with several important lessons given as video tutorials. The price of the book is worth it for this alone. Overall a great buy. My only beef is that the images used in the examples were not (as is often typical)on the CD.I personally enjoy duplicating the lessons with the actual pictures used. This is a minor point, however, and overall I would highly recommend this book.

The Best Elements 4 book on Masking and Compositing.......2006-08-19
This is an excellent book for those using Photoshop Elements 4 that want to understand the use of Blending Modes and using Masks to create complex composites. Ted explains the techniques very well. The book contains a CD that has video tutorials that allow the reader to not only read how to do it but to see Ted do it. The CD alone compared to similiar training CDs is worth the price of the book.
A Professional graphic designer digs deeper in the secrets of PHE4.......2006-08-15
In fact Ted LoCascio is a graphic designer and a Photoshop World instructor and author of Indesign CS2 books.
Thanks to his great craftmanship he gives us fresh new ideas how to combine images with techniques as selecting,layering,masking and compositing.
He starts his first chapter with "All starts with an idea"and this is a good approach for any of us before starting the process of going further with the program.Tell your story he says,get inspired and stay inspired!!! If you'r not interested in compositing this book is not for you because there's a logical build-up of gathering images,the power of observation and image resources(a lot of good ideas in this first chapter page 1-20)
Of course he teaches us the tecniques to understand resolution a pixel logic&color modes and making good selections(chapter two page 23-55)He proceeds with modifiyng selections in chapter 3(page 59-73) and Mastering layers in chapter 4(page 77-108).As so far you'll know all about layers but then there's a chapter 5 on The Power of Opacity & Blending that's really great(he takes the same example and show you an interactive tour of blending modes;great!
Compositing with masks is a tremendous chapter 6(page 139-181)brings you to a higher level of your achievements.For those having cameras with camera RAW files there's a whole chapter 7(page 189-218) and finally the book ends with chapter 8 Ading Filters,Styles&Effects(page 225-252)where all this features are well explained in tutorials and illustrated with beautiful images.
It's a easy to follow book with good examples and more than 150 colour photos.You can follow the techniques on the companion cd a wonderful bonus with 16 easy to follow Quick-Time training movies about selections,feathering,mastering layers,applied blending,compositing with masks(gradients,painting in masks ,type masks),shadows & higlights and the filter gallery.
More than two hours of visual training is the greatest bonus and worth the price of this original,well explained & beautifully illustrated book.
Like Jan Kabili,author and trainer says on the cover back "If you tought PHEL4 was just for correcting and organizing photographs this book will turn your head around.It opens up a whole new set of creative possibilities to explore as you learn how to combine images using those versatile program".
