All Hillman books are big carving aids. Patterns are b & w, & there are color photos in front & back. Get yourself a 2nd, color book of bird photos to help if painting realistically is your goal. No seagulls here - a surprise to me.

This is the first book of this type for shore bird decoys that I have seen. Other books generally deal with floating decoys and shore birds as secondary. Photos are great. Nice book.

If you are looking for an inexpensive book of just patterns, this will meet your needs. However the carving instructions are minimalist and there are no painting instructions. There is one color picture of each bird included.

I had previously purchased Microsoft Office Step-By-Step and Microsoft Office Specialist Study Guide. I bought Word SBS along with Excel SBS, Access SBS, and PowerPoint SBS hoping that they would be more in depth for a novice user like myself who wants to build my skills and learn the intricacies of MS Office. Imagine my surprise, when after opening the CDs to all and loading them onto my computer, the exercises are the same as in the first two books I bought. They can't be sent back since the seal is broken on the disk packaging.

Apparently the easier concepts of Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint are collected into MS Office SBS and the more difficult concepts are collected into MS Office Specialist Study Guide.

On a good note, this series is easy to understand and not difficult to use. They really do provide step by step instructions.

However, I wish this series would allow the user to take a project from start to finish. I don't think just following the directions in the exercises has provided me with the skills to complete projects on my own.

The moral of this story is: If you are looking for a book to provide the basics of Word (and Excel, Access, PowerPoint), save your money and buy MS Office SBS and Office Specialist Study Guide. They are to only two books you really need. If you want books that provide more details or are more skill specific, look for something else.

On Course with Quick Refs.......2007-09-01

There is a Hands-On Course, self-paced, that includes practice lessons for learning Word in conjunction with the quick reference cards. Even intermediate level users can learn to use Word more effectively with this package. As an Information Technology specialist and writer, I can't believe what I've learned and I've used Word for 8 years. The lessons are quick and fun to do - so you won't be frustrated. Even if you don't take the course, the Create a Simple Document quick ref cards are so well laid out you'll use them over and over. A seperate Terms booklet is also included with a very well thought out glossary. Read it!

I love the idea of this Quick Reference Card. I usually go for the "For Dummies" books to brush up on or learn how to use a bit of software. These books are very cumbersome as it seems that one has to go through the index about 50 times in order to find the specific piece of information that they are looking for. With this five fold card, I was able to quickly find the information that I needed to learn the specific task that I wanted to learn.
I found the course so, so easy to use. I love how I was able to do the course on my own time, at my own pace and could do the practice exercises in any order that I wanted to. The exercises were so fun to do, it really felt like I was engaged in explorative playing
I began as an intermediate user of word and now I feel like I have gained enough knowledge to become a more advanced level user.
I never knew how powerful word is. One can almost do a desk top publishing job that would equal something done with the Adobe suite. I learned a great deal about how to insert and work with diagrams, pictures and how to use the different formatting options that help to make a document really stand out and one that could be used in presentations. Also, learning how to use the shortcut keys to cut down on time is really beneficial. I never knew how simple it could be to make a brochure or presentation look so good in so little time. It is really amazing. I would recommend this course to people at all user levels. The course is so simple, that I feel even the beginning user would not be intimidated by it, which they would feel the freedom to just relax and learn.

Saved the Day User.......2007-08-30

This set of Quick References, especially the 2003 Using Shortcuts in Documents, won me compliments from a trainer while doing a production job. The trainer was very impressed at how fast the "drag-copy" shortcut, for example, helped us meet a deadline for the field personnel. These cards are visually attractive, easy to follow and transfer "know-how" quickly. A lot of consideration for how people learn is evident in the entire set. Even the tips and notes give extra information most QRCs don't even cover. The Terms document is a must to read. My gratitude is there for how this product has saved the day for me.
