5 out of 5 stars A thoughtful, intellegent look at an underrated director.......1997-06-11

This is, quite simply, the finest book on film theory and analysis that I have ever read. I am a great admirer of Peckinpah's work, especially his westerns, so I am very happy to see a serious consideration of his work. Mr. Seydor writes with great insight, intellegence, and with a thorough understanding of this neglected and under-appreciated director. Too many people identify Sam Peckinpah as a director of blood and guts movies containing violence for the sake of violence. Mr. Seydor shows the themes and emotions that saturate Peckinpah's work and tells us that this is a director of immense talent and passion. He also lets you know that he directed other westerns besides "The Wild Bunch". I hope that someday Mr Seydor will write a book about Peckinpah's non-western films as well. But in the mean time, this book is perfect for movie addicts like myself, but is also very accessable to the casual film fan as well.

Book Description

Peckinpah's Women examines the confluence of factors that worked with, and often against, Peckinpah's cinematic voice to divine a recurring positive theme regarding women in those films that form the heart of his body of work: his period Westerns.

5 out of 5 stars A scholarly, critical book.......2002-03-13

Peckinpah's Women: A Reappraisal Of The Portrayal Of Women In The Period Westerns Of Sam Peckinpah by successful screen writer Bill Mesce is a thoughtful, compelling, and insightful analysis of a famous Western filmmaker of whose career peaked in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Considered gory, violent, and misogynistic by some, Peckinpah's films are reappraised in Peckinpah's Women in order to better understand the multitude of conflicting factors that affected one man's silver screen stories and how he told them. Especially recommended reading for those with a strong interest in the history and future of western film studies in general, and the cinematic work of Sam Peckinpah in particular, Peckinpah's Women is a scholarly, critical book, and a welcome addition to personal, professional, and academic Film Studies reference collections.

        Book Description

American history is full of difficult choices that could have gone the other way. Now Steve Tally sends you back to the most important moments in our nation's history -- and takes the other fork in the road.

Decisions were made. The rules were set. The battles were won. But there was always the possibility of another outcome. Almost America unravels the threads of our nations history -- from the Puritan preachers of the 1970's to the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton -- and takes you to America ( or Americas) that might have been.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, one of the better of the What If series.......2007-01-10

This book is great as a source of true history but of what could have happened. I have read most of the What If type books and found this one to be one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Alternative History I've Ever Read.......2006-06-18

And ironically perhaps because it is the least fictional. This reads like a history text, but the most fun history imaginable. Tally makes it clear from the beginning that he doesn't want to engage in flights of fancy or acts of God. This is alternative history based on reasonable differences of decision made by individuals. Everything not only could have happened, it very nearly did happen. Tally exquisitely researched all of the different scenarios to find moments of great indescision by great men of history- and then replays the scenario.

Through this procedure we get to see how very possible an alternate reality could be. More clearly than I've ever seen before, it is the great men of history who make the changes. (At least in part- a storm blowing a flotilla of Old World ships off course or the Vikings not giving lactose-intolerant war-like Native Americans milk can also change the course of history.) I appreciate how Tally spends a large portion of each chapter explaining the details of true history first. Too often alternative history texts assume a wide understanding of history by the audience on obscure events, leaving the reader with a large "Huh?" Then Tally engages in his alternate reality, inserting very believable dialouge for different historic individuals. He doesn't give away the ending- we know what happened historically, but not why it was so pivotal. The alternate recaps are short, but they covincingly make their point known. Lastly Tally finishes with a recap of what did happen, but tells us what was so important about these events.

If you read this, you might learn a good deal of history. And you might really enjoy yourself a lot in the bargain.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Counterfactual Scenarios.......2004-09-20

The sense I got when I read the "might have beens" in this book was that God seemed to be watching over the development of America--the securing of our independence in the eighteenth century and that we didn't self-destruct or fragment in the nineteenth. That thirteen colonies on the Eastern Seaboard could break from Britain was deemed highly improbable, and it took a lot of providence to bring it about.

The one scenario that I thought was WAY off base was the 1992 election--there is no way that Bush would have beaten Clinton if he had dropped Dan Quayle from the ticket in favor of Colin Powell.

All in all, an enjoyable read, and a reason to be thankful that things didn't turn out as badly for America as they might have.

5 out of 5 stars Good despite a few factual errors.......2004-07-01

Some of these are really thought-provoking and well thought out. I especially enjoyed the one concerning Teddy Roosevelt following through with his plan to ban college football unless they did something to curb the extreme violence (23 young men died in the 1905 season). The consequences were interesting and I thought very plausible.

The book is marred by a few factual errors. They really are not terribly important to the outcome of the author's alternate histories but show a sloppiness in editing. Some examples are placing the Revolutionary War fort of Kaskaskia in present-day Kentucky when it is actually in Illinois and saying that people blamed Lincoln's assassination on people who were wanting to revive the Union cause (obviously the Union cause was in great shape by the point of the war - I assume his editors did not catch it and he meant to say Confederate).

Despite the errors, the book is still a fun read.

The author has a website for the book at www.almostamerica.com with a couple of his alternate histories if you want to get a feel for the book.

3 out of 5 stars What Might Have Been...But Wasn't.......2003-10-12

Steve Tally's "Almost America" explores one of the oldest questions of all--"What if?" From the dawn of colonial America on through the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton, Tally offers a chapter exploring pivotal moments in the nation's history, then follows up with a speculation on how it might have turned out had things taken a different course. The selections all fall within the range of the plausible--there are no aliens, time travel or magic involved in these tales. Thus, we learn what might have happened if Richard Nixon had chosen not to resign, if Robert E. Lee had accepted Lincoln's offer to lead U-S forces in the Civil War, if Samuel Morse had given up trying to perfect the telegraph...the list of ideas shows a real breadth of scope and imagination.

Unfortuately, Tally's vision seems to fall short when he considers the possibilities of what might have been. Most of these sketches are just too skimpy to be fully satisfying. Perhaps fewer chapters, with more fully realized concepts, might have produced a more satisfying volume.--William C. Hall

        Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A good book about different styles of play in chess.......2005-01-25

There are a number of books that analyze games of 19th and 20th century Masters. One is Richard Reti's "Masters of the Chessboard." Another is the recent Mammoth book of the world's greatest chess games, which John Nunn co-authored. And there are others as well, including this one, originally written by World Champion Max Euwe and updated by John Nunn.

I think this book may be the most instructive of them. It has 61 games, 59 of which are annotated. But more than that, it has a 17-page description of the teachings of Wilhelm Steinitz (the first World Champion of chess). When I read the original version of this book, I had never seen a book by Steinitz, and I was not aware of some of the fundamentals of positional play. This book changed all that. It describes Steinitz's main elements of positional play: development, mobility, the center, king safety, weak squares, pawn structure, Q-side majority (with both Kings castled K-side), open files, two bishops, material advantage, and the need to convert temporary advantages to permanent ones at once (or lose them). And it gives some of Steinitz's games which illustrate these elements.

My only complaint with the book is that it did not spend a few more pages describing a little of the thinking of other chess strategists, such as Nimzovich, Reti, Larsen, or Benko. We see one Nimzovich game in which blockade plays a role, but we don't see much of his other ideas, such as overprotection. We see very little on the theory of playing a flank game in which one gives up the center and then plays against it. And I think the Benko gambit is just one example of another style of play that could have been included.

I recommend this book, especially to those who want to learn more about positional play.

5 out of 5 stars Another great work from Nunn!.......2000-08-05

John Nunn is another great chess author who is unashamed to call himself a fan of the game, and a fan of the players. This book is a very fascinating historical journey through several hundred years of chess games, including games and annotations. I don't know which I loved more: the games, or the text....great book!

5 out of 5 stars A great book suitable to master and patzer alike.......1999-07-22

I have been too frugal to go buy this revised edition of The Development of Chess Style, but have thumbed through a friend's copy, and like it very much. The text has been completely rewritten in algebraic notation and the diagrams are now placed where their positions occur in the text rather than in the middle of the page as in my old edition. The portion written by Euwe has only been subtly revised by Nunn through the use of unobtrusive footnotes. He completely rewrote the section on the Soviet school of chess and added sections on Fischer, Karpov, and Kasparov (as well as a few of Kasparov's most recent nemeses).

Motorola. Sun Microsystems. Charles Schwab. Toyota. These global business leaders have bred excellence through innovative executive and management development organizations that go well beyond traditional job training. Known as corporate universities, these entities are essentially strategic partners of their sponsoring companies. Often working in conjunction with traditional educational institutions, they boast cream-of-the-crop faculty from the academic and business communities.

Once the province of only the largest corporations, corporate universities are fast becoming the standard at smaller companies as well. This comprehensive handbook is a valuable resource for companies of all sizes who are considering (or already developing) enhanced professional learning programs. Featuring contributions from experts at ten different corporate universities, academic institutions, and consulting firms, the book addresses the three major components of corporate university success: organization, content, and processes. From structural and financial models to the role of technology, from curriculum development to evaluation approaches and measuring ROI, here is a wealth of information on this major development in professional education.

Once upon a time in the halls of academia, being a college graduate was enough. But now, corporations need their employees to have a more intense, ongoing academic and technical education, so they provide it themselves via corporate universities. Mark Allen and other experts from ten corporate universities, academic institutions and consultancies contributed chapters to The Corporate University Handbook, a practical, behind-the-scenes manual about designing and managing a corporate university. The goal goes beyond education: corporate universities must train employees and help corporations excel and prosper. This thorough, yet conversational, examination includes best practices, source notes and programs offered by specific companies including Motorola, Toyota, Sun Microsystems and Charles Schwab, in the U.S. and elsewhere. We from getAbstract assign this insightful book as an authoritative homework seminar for corporate university planners or managers.
