Oscar Hopkins is a high-strung preacher's kid with hydrophobia and noisy knees. Lucinda Leplastrier is a frizzy-haired heiress who impulsively buys a glass factory with the inheritance forced on her by a well-intentioned adviser. In the early parts of this lushly written book, author Peter Carey renders the seminal turning points in his protagonists' childhoods as exquisite 19th-century set pieces. Young Oscar, denied the heavenly fruit of a Christmas pudding by his cruelly stern father, forever renounces his father's religion in favor of the Anglican Church. "Dear God," Oscar prays, "if it be Thy will that Thy people eat pudding, smite him!" Lucinda's childhood trauma involves a beautiful doll bought by her struggling mother with savings from the jam jar; in a misguided attempt to tame the doll's unruly curls, young Lucinda mutilates her treasure beyond repair. Neither of these coming-of-age stories quite explains how the grownup Oscar and Lucinda each develop a guilty passion for gambling. Oscar plays the horses while at school, and Lucinda, now an orphaned heiress, finds comfort in a game of cards with an odd collection of acquaintances. When the two finally meet, on board a ship bound for New South Wales, they are bound by their affinity for risk, their loneliness, and their awkwardly blossoming (but unexpressed) mutual affection. Their final high-stakes folly--transporting a crystal palace of a church across (literally) godforsaken terrain--strains plausibility, and events turn ghastly as Oscar plays out his bid for Lucinda's heart. Yet even the unconvincing plot turns are made up for by Carey's rich prose and the tale's unpredictable outcome. Although love proves to be the ultimate gamble for Oscar and Lucinda, the story never strays too far from the terrible possibility that even the most thunderstruck lovers can remain isolated in parallel lives.

Book Description

The Booker Prize-winning novel--now a major motion picture from Fox Searchlight  Pictures.

This sweeping, irrepressibly inventive novel, is a romance, but a romance of the sort that could only take place in  nineteenth-century Australia. For only on that sprawling continent--a haven for misfits of both the animal and human kingdoms--could a nervous Anglican minister who gambles on the instructions of the Divine become allied with a teenaged heiress who buys a glassworks to help liberate her sex. And only the prodigious imagination of Peter Carey could implicate Oscar and Lucinda in a narrative of love and commerce, religion and colonialism, that culminates in a half-mad expedition to transport a glass church across the Outback.

5 out of 5 stars Gambling and Love.......2007-04-13

This has got to be in my top five books i have ever read.
Set in 19th century Australia, Lucinda is confident and assertive. In contrast, Oscar is mild mannered and nervous. Together they form a friendhip that begins with a love for gambling but develops into something much deeper.
This story is beautifully written, Carey conjures up wonderful imagery of early Australian life, both in the outback and the city. The characters
are magical.
Absolutely supurb

4 out of 5 stars the aftermath.......2007-03-07

I just finished this book on my subway ride home. I won't spoil the ending, but I will say that my initial shock has subsided to the sort of wisdom and sadness that accompanies the ending of many great books. I do think that Carey's writing suffered a bit during the transport of the glass church; he reminded me a little of John Barth at his most self-indulgent, or something like that. However, it was still compelling, and evidence of the importance of the rest of the story-- the way he built the characters and set the stage.

Interestingly, I read this immediately after Julian Barnes's "Arthur and George," and in retrospect find the beginning of that book heavily influenced by this one. "Oscar and Lucinda" is a worthy read and one that will often hit you in the gut with laughter and pain.

5 out of 5 stars one of the finest books I've read .......2006-08-06

This is a fine, entertaining book. I've never read anything by Carey before, but I'm a fan now.

2 out of 5 stars Oscar and Lucinda.......2006-08-04

Literary fiction is sometimes very tedious for me to read. This is one of them. It takes 300 pages for Oscar to Meet Lucinda. By that time you know what both thier parents ate for breakfast and what the dog's name was and what their neighbors wore to church. But so what?

I found the book slow and over detailed.
Detail is something Carey is best at.
I found the book slow and not that interesting.

4 out of 5 stars The Lingering Effects of Oscar and Lucinda.......2006-05-27

At first, I was reluctant to give myself over to this book. From what I knew of plot and characters (glass churches! gambling priests! Australia!) I dreaded another work that confused quirky for interesting, as so many tend to. But after the first page, all of those worries were left behind and I found myself completely engrossed in this novel. What I had assumed would be an airy, light read turned out to be a book that has stuck with me since I read it.

More than that, it was one of the few books that I've read recently that I really could not stop reading; whenever I had a spare moment, I would try to read a few pages. It was as if instead of reading a novel, was being introduced to breathing, living people, an effect accomplished by having the vast majority of the book acting as a build-up for the advertised events with the church; the reader spends less time reading a story of an event and more time being introduced to two people, with all their traumas and fears and joys lain bare for one to see. While in the hands of a lesser artist this inordinate attention to the back-story could misfire badly, Peter Carey time and again proves himself to be a storyteller more than able to carry it off. And more than an excellent story-teller, Carey is an amazing writer, with a prose both crystalline and gorgeous.

But, this is not a perfect book by any means. One of its most noticeable flaws is the treatment of the last episodes of the narrative, which don't so much wind up the story as suddenly cauterize it to a close. This is even more glaring when one compares it with the style and content in the book's early sections (especially when one considers the amount of detail and care evident in the chapters dealing with Oscar's childhood vs. the whirlwind events after his arrival at Boat Harbor).

However, as the title of this review suggests, the real impact of the book is how it stays with the reader. This little book that I thought would help pass the time before going to sleep has instead stuck stubbornly in my mind, and doesn't seem to be willing to go anywhere else soon.

2 out of 5 stars Not for Banjo Lovers!.......2007-04-02

This book reads as if it were written to fulfill a thesis requirement, and not out of love for the banjo. The author only touches on banjo technique and music, instead she prefers to base her arguments on iconography. I gave it two stars since it provides some interesting perspectives on race relations in the U.S., but it severely falls short for anyone who loves banjo music and the instrument itself.

3 out of 5 stars what about the music?.......2006-05-13

The author does an excellent job of outlining the social history of the banjo in America, but in the end this is a merely academic critique of banjo culture(s), which she skewers like dead butterflies in a case. It's not clear if the author likes banjo music or even listened to much of it. The author is critical of both those who would describe banjo music as "that half-barbaric twang" as well as anyone who actually plays the darned thing. The author's elitism and ivory tower perspective can be forgiven because of the many interesting historical details she provides. It will take another person, probably someone without a PhD, to reassemble the details in a meaningful way for those of us who simply love the sound and the music for what it is.

5 out of 5 stars Book one on the Banjo, Great book on American Culture.......2004-04-06

This is one of the best books on the nature of cultural perception and the wars between reality and the stereotypes of the dominant culture, as well as the relationship between capitalism and culture, race and capitalism in America, as well of class race and style. This book belongs in every home.

Linn deals with the social image of the banjo from its African and African American origins, to minstrelry's role in popularizing this instrument as well as the conflicts between the racism of minstrelry and the explosion of an instrument suited to popularize African American music. She continues by charting the now-forgetten age of the classic banjo from post civil war period until the first decade of this century, when manufacturers and teachers tried to elavate the five string instrument from its working class and African American roots, to becoming a polite and priviledged possession for the rich. She then charts the evolyution of the instrument and its image into the jazz age with the various 4 string banjos. Finally she deals with the images in the culture created by the persistence of the instrument in appalachia and its revival in the folk scene of the 1950s through today.

This is a gross summary of a subtle, well written book, that provides pictures about how stereotypes and misinformation based on the racial and class conflicts of society both cloud our knowledge of the real culture and constitutes part of it.

This is a fascinating book about American history and culture and race under capitalism, even if the reader is not interested in the banjo. If one is interested in the banjo in any way, you Need this book!

2 out of 5 stars The focus should have remained on the value of Ultra to the British.......2007-04-11

It is impossible to overstate the value of the British decryption specialists in the Allied victory in World War II. The project, given the overall codename Ultra, allowed the British to read the secret dispatches the German military was sending out to their forces. By knowing what the Germans were going to do, the British navy and air forces were able to organize and concentrate their limited forces and meet the challenge.
The HMS Petard was a destroyer in the British navy and in October of 1942 it engaged in a battle with the German submarine U-559. When the German crew abandoned the submarine, three British sailors swam over and removed some of the German code books. Two of them went down with the sub. The codebooks allowed the British to break the codes the Germans were using to control their submarines and enabled the British to prevail in the battle of the Atlantic. Like the air battle over Britain, this one was also very close. The British Isles are completely dependent on supplies arriving by ship and if the Germans had been more effective in sinking Allied shipping, the British would have been starved and forced to surrender.
The action of the HMS Petard was so secret that the British navy refused to give the two sailors who gave their lives a suitable military decoration. This was in fear that it would tip the Germans off that their codes had been compromised. Fortunately for the British side, the German High Command never became aware that their codes had been broken.
Given such powerful material, you would expect this to be a very good book. It is not because the author is so repetitive and non-sequential. He jumps back and forth in time and many situations are repeated, albeit in a different guise. He also describes the actions of the Petard throughout the war, which is a tangential subplot off the main plot, namely the value of Ultra. It would have been a better book if the emphasis would have remained focused on Ultra.

                      1 out of 5 stars Capturing Enigma.......2000-10-03

The story of HMS Petard's capture of an enigma machine and related codebooks probably deserves no more than a chapter in a history of World War II. Whilst it is a story of great bravery by a few individuals, it is a lightweight story. Time and again, the author repeats the basic story of the ship, its crew, and their actions. Frankly, there just isn't enough material to fill a book or to hold a reader's interest. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars The Ancient Laws of Babylon.......2000-11-02

This book-- the first edition of which was printed in 1904-- provides the student of Mesopotamian antiquity with an astounding examination of the famous Code of Hammurabi, a king of Babylon who provided his subjects with what was probably the most comprehensive set of laws in existence at the time in which they were written. It is interesting to note that the laws themselves are said by Hammurabi to have been rendered unto him directly by Marduk, an ancient Sumerian sun-god.

The book is amazing in many ways, not the least of which being the fact that the actual codes themselves were found, engraved on a large block of black diorite, in 1901 CE and yet were fully transliterated by a diverse group of scholars and in print as early as 1904 CE. This feat of having rendered a complete transliteration of the codes-- along with several extremely difficult passages that appeared in the epilogue-- is a truly impressive scholastic effort, the incredible work of several eminent Assyriologists of the early 20th Century CE.

A great deal of information concerning the social structure of Babylon may be gleaned by reading through these codes, revealed both directly and also by inference. We are able to see quite well what their system of social prioritization was like, and by being so acquainted with their mores, proscriptions and so forth, a very clear picture of the Babylonians as a collective group emerges.

This book would be most valuable to those who are interested in the history of ancient Semitic people, but also to those who are interested in the history of torts and criminal codes in general. As it is, the Codes of Hammurabi can be seen to have influenced subsequent legal codiciles, allegedly to include even the Ten Commandments as transferred by Moses. As these latter codes were to become a cornerstone of the subsequent ethical apperception of Europe-- thus having a further impact on the rest of the world, even unto this very day-- one might say that by reading the Codes of Hammurabi we are able to see how the laws of most Western people evolved over the past four millenia.

While this book does not present us with a very difficult read, it might not be entirely interesting to the casual perusal of the average person. Even so, it is possible that virtually anyone who picked up this book and read some of it would learn a great deal about a famous society that became extinct around 1100 BCE, that is, the society of the ancient city-state known as Babylon. Perhaps by so knowing, we may also be facing an examination of ourselves.

From the supplier: The Tax Court ruled in a memorandum opinion that the exception to the ownership rules of IRC section 1034 was limited to the circumstance when the exact same husband and wife rollover gain into a new principal residence. The taxpayer stated that she intended to rollover, and not recognize, gain on the sale of a residence that she had owned with one husband. She subsequently bought a new residence with her new husband. They acquired the house jointly. The Tax Court found that identity of ownership exceptions did not apply to the taxpayer and any husband.
