    Book Description

If you're a cutting-edge Web developer who wants to create interactive, user-friendly sites that will transform the way people work with the Web, you've probably heard about Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX. By incorporating streaming media, real-time collaboration, and multi-way video, audio, and text messaging into one server solution, Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX enables you to easily add features like shared live white boards, multi-way chat screens, and video conferencing to your sites. The best part? It's all delivered through the Macromedia Flash Player so viewers don't have to open multiple applications.

Reality Macromedia Flash Communication Server MX: Strategic Solutions for Online Interaction is the only book to give you a behind-the-scenes look at developing real-world FlashCom projects that are practical, cost-effective solutions. As part of the development team you're privy to the memos, notes, work-flow, planning, and process charts that are included in a real development process. Over the course of the book you'll learn to build entire applications (which are included on the book's companion CD-ROM) using both client-side and server-side Communication ActionScript. Different design ideas are presented and either accepted or rejected, and discussions about usability, HCI, and bandwidth realities are revealed so that you'll come away with a clear idea of what to expect in development as well as strategies to overcome those challenges.

Got this book for free from a friend.Hmm..I wondered why he gave me the book for free.Didn't know until one of my current research's requirements is Flash Comm Server MX.Flipped through the book and I'd have to say:Ewwww..programmers...stay away from this book!!!!It's not worth your money.

1 out of 5 stars This book really good for ... CTO.......2005-01-25

Yeah, that's right, CTO only need to know what the FlashComm can do, how they do, but doesn't really need to get dirty like all the programmers out there. So if you are CTO go and get this book, if you want to get dirty with FlashComm then stay away from this book. If you want to buy this book in "mint" condition, please contact me (vht@rocketmail.com), I will place this book on ebay for just 10USD.

2 out of 5 stars this is not a good enough book for me.......2004-12-28

i have a few points that may be valuable for those who are looking for really professional flashcom books:

    1. the example files that come from this book's website work very poorly due to lack of programming considerations within the book itself. some applications fail to run on the second run because something is wrong with the programming used on the flashcom side or client-side, and the applications simply won't start unless u reload the applications from the server.

    2. the book does not go thoroughly enough with flashcom applications such as user management in a video conference, and server-side scripts that are required for handling issues such as user log on/off, userid, etc.

    3. although the book goes to teach real life solutions, but it barely touches the core concept of flashcom applications. i can only comment that this book is on the rim of a glass.

i hope my points will be helpful for those who are looking for a really good flashcom books...

    5 out of 5 stars Programming Indeed.......2003-11-25

Maybe I'm not a typical FlashCom user as far a programming background is concerned. I'm a Java programmer with a little experience in Flash. I don't write reviews because I don't believe most of the ones I read anyway and this one is simply in response to one of this book that was factually inaccurate.

I've looked at 2 or 3 books that have some information about FlashCom, and this is the best by far. The reason I like this book is because it is pure programming. It contains no FlashCom components at all. Period. I have no idea why a reviewer would say otherwise. (Maybe he's confused this book with another book.)

Coming from Java, I thought FlashCom would be a piece of cake. It is not (despite what a favorable review claims). You need to coordinate ActionScript, Client-side ActionScript and Server-side ActionScript. I liked the real-world examples in this book and each of the five applications brought together the different versions of ActionScript. The authors used procedural programming rather than OOP. However, in going over the code (and adding my own changes)it is not poorly structured.

I am not a big fan of this book's format. It goes through the details of dealing with clients, which in my work, I avoid. (We have reps that do that.) I wish that space had been used for more scripts and apps. However, the processes described are real and people who like that kind of stuff will like the book.

Like I said, THIS BOOKS CONTAINS NO FlashCom components, and I'd hate to see it passed over because of a wildly inaccurate review.

1 out of 5 stars As a programmer, I thought this book was awful.......2003-11-25

I researched a few books online covering FCS and was sold on this one after reading the high reviews. I purchased the book and went through the entire thing in about an hour and gained nothing more than what I have learned from the Macromedia documentation and online resource center. NOTE: I was going into this expecting to learn more about how Flash and Flash Comm Server work together to better code applications between them. This book shows a few simple examples of how to use the built-in components. I strongly recommend NOT buying this book. I was was surprised to see all the high ratings when I came back to add my review, so be sure to read those as I am one of the few that is dissatisfied with this book.

1 out of 5 stars not for programmers.......2006-12-05

This book is good for getting the basics on flash communication server, and for using the pre-installed UI components, but does not go into detail on how to program custom applications, they pretty much expect you to use the pre-installed UI components, which is pretty crappy.
I highly recommend getting the O'Reilly book instead, I just picked it up and its WAYYYYYYYYYY better. It's called "programming flash communication server".

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever Written on This Subject, I have purchased 10 of them.......2006-04-30

This is absolutely the best book ever written on this subject. Very understandable, has great examples geared towards educational use. Best approach to application building on the topic. So why is Kevin not getting better reviews. His book hit at the transition to actionscript 2, so some of his code examples will not run in 2 since letter case is not strictly adhered to. In addition, towards the end of the book some of the code examples need rework (I have done that), and guess what not all the code in Brian Lesser's book works either. This is the book that got me going and without it I would not have made it this far. Thanks Kevin for your work on this book!

If you are serious about Flash Com, you will buy every book you can get your hands on (and right now there are only 3 of them). This is the best one for a beginner/intermediate flash programmer creating educational applications. I strongly recommend it! Note: (last time I checked) The book code no longer exists on his companion website.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away from this one..........2005-06-16

It's not a good book. Its exercises are full with errors.Plus its website companion is no longer accessable.I wonder why...really wasted my money!!

5 out of 5 stars This book is required for serious FlashCom developers.......2004-10-10

All I can say is that I totally agree with Kevin Towes. Anyone who feels that there is another book out at the moment that is better than this could be the reason why there aren't any inspirational FlashCom work out there. This is the foundation. Nothing else compares with it. Forget about the typos and work to make the projects in the book work for you. I have, so there is no excuse. Great work Kevin!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Terrible Terrible.......2004-03-09

Don't believe the 5-star hype above about this book. I bought this book since it was the *only* source on flashcom and unfortunatly it currently still is. The code and examples presented are very rocky, full of errors and difficult to understand. I just about gotten half way through the book and I am utterly disgusted. Even though it may fill in a few blanks about flashcom, the fustration, confusion and frankly the price of the book is just not worth it.

I feel foolish as I figured since I am a 7 year veteran of Flash and have extensive programming experience that I could hack through this book even though it had poor reviews. I thought perhaps it may be of some value to my study of flashcom. Boy was I wrong, its not even a decent reference.

Don't support incompetent authors/publishers by shelling out your money for this one.

      Book Description

The 1990s. African Americans achieved more influence–and faced more explosive issues–than ever before. One word captured those times. One magazine expressed them. Emerge.

In those ten years, with an impressive circulation of 170,000 and more than forty national awards to its credit, Emerge became a serious part of the American mainstream. Time hailed its “uncompromising voice.” The Washington Post declared that Emerge “gets better with each issue.” Then, after nearly a decade, Emerge magazine closed its doors. Now, for the first time, here’s a collection of the finest articles from a publication that changed the face of African American news.

From the Clarence Thomas nomination to the Bill Clinton impeachment . . . from the life of Louis Farrakhan to the death of Betty Shabazz . . . from reparations for slavery to the rise of blacks on Wall Street . . . the most important people, topics, and turning points of this remarkable period are featured in incisive articles by first-rate writers.

Emerge may have ended with the millennium, but–as this incomparable volume proves–the quality of its coverage is still unequaled, the extent of its impact still emerging. Stirring tribute, uncanny time capsule, riveting read–The Best of Emerge Magazine is also the best of American journalism.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Emerge Magazine.......2007-08-12

This is a great book. As a long term subscriber to Emerge magazine I was extremely disappointed and angered when the magazine was shut down. This book has so many of the excellent articles that remember reading and I will be able to have this book as proof of what a quality magazine can be. I hope my grands and great grands will be able to access it for future reference.

5 out of 5 stars Memorable Stories From " The Best Of Emerge".......2007-01-08

I Was Really Caught Up Reading This Book,Because Before This Publication Folded A Few Years Ago, I Was A Subscriber For Many Years. Personally I Feel That This magazine Was One Of A Kind. There Were Many Stories That I Enjoyed Ready, Such As One That I Recall The Story About A College Student From Hampton University, Kimba Smith, That Was Involved With A Drug Dealer. She Ended Up Spending Time In A Federal Prison, But Was later Pardon By Bill Clinton. Thanks For "The Best Of Emerge" It May Be Gone, But Its NOT forgotten.

1 out of 5 stars The Best Is Not Included.......2004-07-18

Curious that the so-called best of Emerge coincides when editor George Curry took over, a sign of self-congratulatory ego. Prior to Curry, Emerge was blessed with lively, diverse writing from an assortment of authors ranging from Shelby Steele, Amari Baraka, Juan Williams, Margo Jefferson, and other A-list writers. Topics published in the pre-Curry years were ground-breaking. Emerge was the first black publication to discuss the AIDS crisis in the African-American community, to predict the fall of African dictatorships. Its most beautiful and best-selling issue of all time examined the impact of Malcolm X long before the release of the Spike Lee bio-pic. Emerge profiled people such as Angela Davis to Willie T Ribbs to Colin Powell to Nelson Mandela. Each issue of Emerge was vibrant. Under Curry, Emerge read like The Crisis - heavily edited, dated, flavorless. It chose to "courageously" ridicule established pariahs like Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas - while ignoring the hypocritical lives of certain established leaders in the black community. The best of Emerge can be found in back issue magazine stores, not in this collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Bygone Journalism Era Brought Back to Life.......2003-08-11

Journalist/Editor George E. Curry has resurrected the magnificent, hard-hitting, journalistic stories that made the now defunct Emerge Magazine the premier feature news publication in the 1990s. In this 660 + page volume, we are graced with The Best of Emerge Magazine edited by Curry. It is a work of brilliance to combine these stories in one work to be read at the readers' convenience and pleasure. It is also a vital, historical document worthy of being filed with the Schomburg Institute.

The exposes are prolific, provocative and well-written. Who can forget "Kemba's Nightmare," the young college student who got caught in a drug dealer's web? She was sentenced to thirty years in jail, where she gave birth to her son and tore at the heartstrings of countless African Americans, especially middle-class parents, who were reminded "There but for the grace of God, that could be my child." Reported in three parts over several years, Kemba was pardoned by President Clinton just before he left the White House in 2000. Ralph Wiley's insightful essay in 1989 about black athletic superiority is now a classic as is Lee A. Daniels' stunning article, "Targeting Black Boys for Failure." Jill Nelson's story "Amazing Grace" examines the plight of Deborah Lyons, wife of the dishonored president of the National Baptist Convention. Nelson expounds on the subservient role Sister Lyons and other women take in the wake of male religious leaders who continually humiliate and shame their loved ones.

"Driving While Black" and "Thinking While Black" are among other stimulating articles, as well as "Rape of a Spelman Coed" which made us look hard at the issue of acquaintance/date rape in the black community and our attitudes about it. Profiles of Dick Gregory, Johnnie Cochran, Farrakhan, Betty Shabazz, Elizabeth Catlett and Tom Joyner captured the essence of who's who in diverse black America. And did we not look forward to "Friend Fire", the witty column written by Lauren Adams Deleon, which looked at the stupid, crazy, bizarre, but true antics of our folk? There are a great many more great stories, but what remains with me to this day is the MasterCard moment of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, posed as a lawn jockey on the cover of one of the most controversial issues of the publication, and the accompanying article written by Curry himself. Priceless indeed.

This reviewer is of the mind that such controversial issues as the Thomas piece, among others, led to the Emerge's demise, which is contentious in itself. It seems everybody does not agree with putting our dirty laundry out for all the world to view. Loquacious, innovative and groundbreaking, this is the meat of journalistic reporting. I was disappointed when the magazine ceased publication and have not found another quite to my satisfaction to replace it. I say there should be a campaign to bring back Emerge Magazine and I would gladly volunteer as the chairperson. Bring back Emerge!

        Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.

Of course, Elizabeth Castro manages to write books that not only speak to those who are already fluent in HTML, but are good for newbies too. She makes it a breeze to create sites that are visually stylish and technically sophisticated without the expense of buying an editor.

Among the topics covered in her new book, HTML for the World Wide Web with XHTML and CSS: using the (relatively newer) structural tags (like doctype and div); correctly using older tags (like p and img) that have been modified in XHTML; writing XHTML so that formatting is done by the style sheets; writing those style sheets (cascading style sheets, a.k.a. "CSS"); creating a variety of layouts; and dealing with tables, frames, forms, multimedia, a bit of JavaScript (including mouseovers), WML (for mobile device displays), debugging, publishing, and publicizing your site.

As with all Visual QuickStart Guides, this one features clear and concise instructions side by side with well-captioned illustrations and screen shots that show both the source code and the resulting effect on the Web page. The index is extremely detailed, making this a great reference.

Also great for reference are the outstanding appendices. The first is an extensive list of tags and attributes, indicating which are deprecated and/or proprietary and on which page they are discussed. A similar appendix shows CSS properties and values; given the future of Web coding, this chart alone is worth the price of the book. Other handy charts cover intrinsic events, symbols and character Unicodes, and an expanded color chart that goes way beyond the virtually archaic Web-safe palette. All of which makes this a definite must-have for every Web designer's bookshelf. --Angelynn Grant
