Jeff Chandler
ASIN: 0786420014 |
Book Description
Ruggedly handsome Jeff Chandler won over fans with his versatile acting in film, television, radio, and theatre. He was particularly respected for his roles in Westerns. Chandler got an Oscar nomination in 1950 for Broken Arrow, was involved in the production of 27 box-office champions, and worked with such stars as Orson Welles, Susan Hayward, and James Stewart.
First, a biography covers Chandler's life: his birth in 1918; WWII service; the start of his radio career in 1946; his first film role soon after; and his success as a recording artist, song-writer, and owner of "Chandler Music;" his death in 1961 and the subsequent malpractice suit filed by his family. The work then covers his 54 films from The Invisible Wall (1947) to Merrill's Marauders (1962). Each chronologically arranged entry provides the studio name, month and year of release, the ad line, alternate titles, running times, format, genre, ratings, cast and crew credits, and a synopsis, plus such information as behind-the-scenes details and additional comments, review extracts, and quotes from Chandler and others about the film. A section on music and spoken word follows, listing all credits and statistics as above, plus program notes and quotes from Chandler. The radio section gives the program and episode name, date, episode number, and credits. The next section lists television appearances with the same information as in the film section.
Chandler's play (The Trojan Horse) with the troupe, dates, number of performances, cast and crew, synopsis and additional comments, is described last. A full bibliography concludes the work, which is illustrated with personal and professional photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Jeff Chandler - The Forgotten Hollywood Star.......2006-07-15
Jeff Wells has done an admirable job of putting together a well researched and nicely written book - however this is a compact book - it is not a typical biography. Wells has split the book into a brief and very straight forward biography, then there are sections on Chandlers' films, his work on the radio, random appearances on television and a synopsis of Chandler's music.
If a reader didn't know anything about Jeff Chandler, this would be the book to recommend. This is a quick read but there is a lot of solid information regarding Chandler's film and radio career in Hollywood.
For those in the know about who Jeff Chandler was and what films he was in, this is not entirely satisfactory read - basically the book reads like a blue print - the author doesn't allow his voice to emerge and it feels like Wells may not have viewed all of Chandlers' films - missing from this book is an analysis of Chandler's performances. Basically, Jeff Chandler was the king of the B's and most unfortunately, Chandler didn't always have the right co-star or director. Chandler worked mostly in Westerns, War Films or the obligatory "Swords & Sandals" (with the exception of Sinatra, it seems every leading man got stuck in one of these 1950's oddities) - once in a great while, Chandler would be found in a contemporary piece - not often enough.
For instance, a film like "A Stranger In My Arms" - this is a great story with some very good actors (Mary Astor, June Allyson, Charles Coburn, Sandra Dee) However, there is no chemistry between Chandler and his leading lady, June Allyson and the film was shot in black and white when it should have been in glorious technicolor. Produced by Ross Hunter it surprising lacks any real passion from the leading man and woman - the best stuff in the film is Chandler and Sandra Dee haming it up in bar scene. See this film for the fine performances of the supporting players. With the right leading lady, it could have been a nice film for Chandler.
Unfortunately, Wells does not try to examine Esther Williams' nasty claims about Jeff Chandler and cross dressing. Also, the biography section ends in 1961 when Jeff Chandler passes away.
In 2003, Marilyn Kirk "self published" a book on Jeff Chander - basically her book is a horror show; mistakes, quoting from old movie magazines (the least reliable source of information) and the book is in desparate need of a good editor but overall Marilyn Kirk is a huge fan of Chandler and between the lines of her poorly written & somewhat delusional book there is a great passion for Chandler.
After reading Well's book on Chandler - just a little touch of that passion would have been welcomed. All in all, Wells has created his version of "the dummy's guide to Jeff Chandler" BUT it doesn't make it a bad book. Laura Wagner, book reviewer for great movie buff zine "Classic Images" gave Well's book a poor review which wasn't deserved.
Essentially, this book is like a pebble skimming across a very large pond. Jeff Wells has created an excellent research tool on Jeff Chandler, at least the essence of Chandler's work has been cataloged and because of Wells, someone who can really write a biography will come along for the late and much forgotten, Mr. Jeff Chandler.
Book Description
The book that launched America's urban legend obsession! The Vanishing Hitchhiker was Professor Brunvand's first popular book on urban legends, and it remains a classic. The culmination of twenty years of collection and research, this book is a must-have for urban legend lovers.
Customer Reviews:
Reviewing another review.......2006-09-12
I bought this book and found it great. Enough said. However, I'm here mainly to review another review on here.
What kind of idiot is the person who wrote the following:
"Not A Book About Urban Legends, September 16, 2001
Reviewer: A reader
I bought this book thinking that it was a collection of short stories about urban legends. I was partly right. It does have short stories but it also contains a explaination about each and every one including varations of a story."
Did they not even read the title of the book in which is says 'American Urban Legends
AND THEIR MEANINGS'??????? Do not listen to this reviewers unfounded whine fest. And why are they complaining in the first place about getting the history of an urban legend anyway? But really they need to read the full title before buying a book.
Original Text for Urban Legends.......2004-01-29
Thanks to the work of Jan Brunvand, the term "urban legend" has become part of the English language lexicon. This is the first book that Brunvand wrote on urban legends, and it contains the classics. You can find out the scoop on rats in KFC, spiders in bananas, the hookman, and (of course) the vanishing hitchhiker. The work shows how legends are oftentimes accepted without critique for being true, and the analysis provides interesting ways for considering why these stories catch on amongst tellers and listeners.
The very best book ever on this subject.......2001-11-19
This author is a rare find in literature of this kind: a genuine, professional folklorist who carefully documents his subject and traces its beginnings. Brumvand is the first author to consult on urban folklore. This book is a keeper, one to read and re-read.
Not A Book About Urban Legends.......2001-09-17
I bought this book thinking that it was a collection of short stories about urban legends. I was partly right. It does have short stories but it also contains a explaination about each and every one including varations of a story.
I would recommend that unless this is a book report for school or college that you should save your money and try and find it in a used book store or buy it used from a seller on amazon. It is not worth the money to buy it new.
Does This Book Actually Exist? or Is It Just A Rumor?.......2001-08-15
Brunvand was so ahead of his time. This book was originally published before the term URBAN LEGEND was a film, a sequel and a catch phrase. In these days of email boxes crammed to the brim with fake virus alerts, cookie recipes, pyramid schemes, and hundreds of forwards you cannot open, we forget the origin of "urban legends." Told and retold from generation to the next, Brunvand tells us the history of these "sworn to be true' stories such as "The Hook" and "The Boyfriend's Death" - how the stories got started and how they evolved into permanent teenage and campfire lore. Sure you can look 'em up on the Internet now, but you will never get the rich and wild history of tales told by the sister of an old boyfriend who had a cousin who SWORE it happened to her unless you read this book, and the many that Brunvand followed it up with.

Customer Reviews:
SoE.......2002-08-09
I dont own this guide. Ok done with the disclaimer. I have beaten SoE quite a few times and have looked at the excerpt pages. Having beaten it i find no need to get this guide, but from what I have read, the book gives a good description of the missions and is definately a referance i would have liked when playing through it. This guide is pretty descriptive considering the fact this game is not an easyone to write a guide for because strategy can change because of a small incident in a mission. Its helpful, and a great guide concidering the challenge of the game it was written for.
State of redundancy.......2002-04-01
Great Idea but play is in that interesting or origional.
pointless.......2002-03-24
allright what was the point in making this thing? it doesnt tell you anything that the little book that came with the game does. And the mission section of this book just restates what they tell you in the game. Its basically a waste of money so dont buy it.
This book [stinks]!!!! DON'T BUY IT!!!.......2002-02-26
I usually buy the strategy guide with the games i buy because they help when you get stuck on some impossable level. not this book. it is the worst strategy guide i have ever bought. The only good part in the intro, where it tells you about the weapons. It gives you no helpful strategys at all. I could have written a better strategy guide. All it does, is tell you what you have to do, basicly what the game it self tells you. i emplore you, do not buy this ...!
very helpful and great strategy guide.......2002-02-17
I almost always buy strategy guides with games i buy. So when i bought this game the day it came out, i bought the strategy guide. This is one of the most helpful strategy guides i have had the privelage of spending 14 bucks on. Its divided into 4 sections, with the 4 worlds you have in the game. THere is a list of characters, guns, etc... and great maps and guides to help you get through the game. There arent any Gameshark cheats and no other kind of cheats i can find on the internet right now, so forking out the 14 bucks for this strategy guide may be the right thing to do in this situation. The game itself is great- and they do a great job with this strategy guide in telling you all about what to do.

Customer Reviews:
A true contribution to the architectural profession.......2006-12-21
Ava Abramovitz has distilled her years of experience as attorney, advisor and mediator into a wonderfully readable book. Her insights and suggestions will benefit every architect who has strugged with uncertainty during contract negotiations. A wonderful addition to our professional library.
ESSENTIAL to say the least.......2006-09-20
Did you know that negotiation can be taught? Most architects do not understand that the rest of the world NEGOTIATES. This book is absolutely ESSENTIAL to the business end of architecture, as well as to life. How do you handle a client who wants full ownership of documents? Do you know what liability that can open you and your firm up to?! Do your key employees know how to negotiate? What about negotiating design? Are all aspects of the design so important that you're willing to walk away from the job, the client and future work; or do you know how to negotiate a win-win situation? This book is for ANYONE in the firm who is in direct contact with the client or other representatives of the client. GET AND READ THIS BOOK! (It will even help with non-professional relationships.)
Valuable Advice for Either Side of the Table........2004-03-03
Contract negotiations are often tedious and frustrating. This book was refreshingly useful because it laid out strategies for achieving desired negotitated results. The book's advice and approach can be applied with profit to any contract negotiations, but it's examples are based on negotiating the complicated agreements between Owners and Architects. I've used it with success to explain the Architect's needs and concerns to Owners and, just as frequently, I've used it when representing Owners to explain why a certain compromise and position in negotiations with Architects makes sense. It is a book with balanced advice on how to negotiate in general and how to do so in particular in the Owner/Architect context. It's many specific examples and suggested solutions to typical negotiation issues have saved me hours of time attempting to articulate to opposing counsel or my clients what the author has already compiled in this book.
I've found its contents so useful that I've taught portions of seminars to Architects, Contractors and Owners using lessons and insights taken from the book. The attendees always have commented favorably on the concrete, practical advice they have learned from those portions of the seminar.
This is a valuable book. If you're involved in any negotiations, especially construction, it is worth purchasing.
a great book about negotiation and communication.......2003-08-12
I teach architecture students a course on professional practice and have made Architect's Essentials of Contract Negotiation required reading. Of all the sources I've read on this topic, Ava Abramowitz offers the most accessible and well-reasoned explanations of what every design professional must understand about negotiation (and communication).
Abramowitz's many years of experience as a counselor, teacher and mentor to architects has clearly given her insight into how architects think, and she uses this insight to great effect. My students enjoy reading this text (especially Chapters 3&4) because it connects to the way they see the world (and helps focus that vision) in language that rings true. Don't be fooled by the word "Contracts" in the title; this is a great book about architects and negotiation in general and one that I believe all architects should own.
Better than Getting To Yes.......2003-05-03
I am not an architect, but I loved this book. It clearly laid out steps real people can take to negotiate tough problems -- whether construction-related or not. The chapter on communication skills and the one on dispute resolution alone were worth the price of the book. In fact, I would say, as a senior manager of a growing business, that anyone who seeks to accomplish anything important in any business would benefit from the information this book contains. It should be required reading for all.
Customer Reviews:
A great overview for beginners.......2005-11-08
I am a real estate attorney and recommend this book to anyone who is new to the purchase and sale of real estate. This book is a clearly written explanation of the residential real estate purchase process from contract through closing. It will explain the terms used and the steps that must be taken, so that you will be able to understand what is happening and what has to be done. That being said, I would no more recommend that you rely on a self-help book to buy or sell your home, than I would recommend that you do your own electrical work. There is a lot at stake, and if you screw up, you will get burned. Read this book and hire competent professionals.
Good General Information.......2005-09-09
Interesting reading for those who are looking to buy or sell their own properties. Very general, but some valid points in contract creation.
Real Estate Contracts fully expalined.......2003-03-10
I understand that Attorney Mark Warda has written over 60 books on real estate and the law, and this is just one of those books. He dissects the real estate contract between the buyer and the seller going over each and every clause and explaining its meaning in layman's terms.
Also included in the book are 8 different forms. If you are represented by a competent and knowledgeable real estate attorney, then this book may not be necessary. But if you are buying and selling property without an attorney then this book is a must. The more property you buy and sell the more you need this book. On the other hand if you already have many settlements under your belt this book will not have many new ideas for you.
This book would most benefit the beginner or intermediate real estate investor. I also read another book by the same author on "Land Trusts" and got much more from that book.
Invaluable Tool for real estate investors.......2003-02-20
I have been interested in investing in real estate for a long time and felt confident with all aspects of it except for the contract. I didn't feel like paying a lawyer to draw up a contract that I didn't really understand and that was 9 pages long was the right answer. After reading this book I have started investing using my own contract and containing clauses and ideas presented in this book. My contracts have been reviewed and approved by real estate attorneys who never had a clue that the contract wasn't prepared by an attorney.
A fast, very practical reference for buyers or sellers.......1998-12-18
This book lets you choose how you want to set up your contract. It explains the pros and cons of each clause. Most lawyers would learn a lot from it but it is simple enough for anyone to understand. I loaned one from the library but decided I need one of my own, that's how good it is.

Excellent, useful reference guide.......2005-12-30
This new (Feb. 2005) edition of this book is highly useful for couples who plan on living together but not getting formally married. Highly recommended!
