Book Description

This collection of essays explores the literary and cinematic implications of translating Austen's prose into film. It considers how prose fiction and cinema differ; how mass commercial audiences require changes to script and character; and how continually remade films evoke memories of earlier productions. The essays represent widely divergent perspectives, from literary "purists" suspicious of film renderings of Austen to film-makers who see the text as a stimulus for producing exceptional cinema. The comprehensive study will be of interest to students as well as teachers.

4 out of 5 stars Best book to date.......2004-01-16

This book is much better than the previous "Jane Austen in Hollywood" and would suit anyone interested in the adaptations. I would recommend it highly to janeites and film students alike. Highlight chapters are "Janeite Culture: What does the name jane austen authorize?" and "Sense and Sensibility in a post-feminist world: sisterhood is still powerful". This book is a refreshing look at the adaptations by not hammering the film ethusiasts vs literary purists debate throughout the entire book; rather, dedicating one chapter to it. It is comprehensive study and good value for money.

The biennial Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival in Waterloo, New Jersey, has been called the Woodstock of poetry. Taking place over the course of several (often hot and sticky) summer days, the festival comprises readings and workshops and performances. Audiences under the big top can reach a couple thousand. It is stunning to see so many lovers of poetry gathered in one place.

For Fooling with Words, Moyers interviews 11 of the poets on the festival's 1998 roster. "Talking to poets about their lives," he says, "makes their poetry more accessible to me." And what a variety of poets and lives he has come up with! The youngest is New Yorker senior editor Deborah Garrison (A Working Girl Can't Win), then 32; the eldest, Stanley Kunitz, 93 years old and wearing a lime-green jacket. In between are Coleman Barks, Robert Pinsky, Lorna Dee Cervantes, Paul Muldoon, Marge Piercy, Mark Doty, Jane Hirshfield, Kurtis Lamkin, and Shirley Geok-Lin Lim. These conversations are dotted with poems. "I like to know about the experiences that produced the poet," says Moyers, and the intermingling of conversation and poetry is a wonderful, casual way to be introduced to a poet's sensibility. Doty discusses the pain of "writing about the hardest things in the world." Hirshfield talks about her Zen practice and the notion that ideas "can graze inside us like animals who reshape the landscape with their grazing." Throughout, there is the sense of lives that would not be bearable without poetry. "Poetry is what has saved me," says one poet here; "You never know when your poem will come to someone's rescue," chimes another. --Jane Steinberg

      Book Description

Fooling with Words is an intimate, inspirational celebration of language in its most exalted form and of the importance of poetry in our lives today. In dozens of poems and a series of fascinating conversations with poets of all stripes gathered for the acclaimed Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, Fooling with Words brings poetry to life for the reader.

Bill Moyers has been covering the poetry beat for more than a decade, and in the fall of 1998 he returned to the Dodge Festival with his public television cameras, capturing the performances of the poets, and, in interviews with them, their dazzling array of images, metaphors, and emotions. Coleman Barks not only reads from his translations of Rumi, but also shares the poems that he wrote in tribute to his "most beautiful granddaughter." Mark Doty talks with Moyers about "poetry's great power to preserve, its ability to take a moment in time and hold it forever." Jane Hirshfield talks about the influence on her poetry of the eight years she studied Zen, including three years in a monastery when she didn't write at all.

Moyers listens to these and other poets including Lorna Dee Cervantes, Deborah Garrison, Paul Muldoon, Marge Piercy, Kurtis Lamkin, Shirley Geok-lin Lim, Stanley Kunitz, and Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, and weaves another invaluable and enjoyable tapestry of poems with the memorable voices of the poets themselves. Anyone who loves poetry or is seeking a special gift will cherish Fooling with Words.

4 out of 5 stars interesting collection of interviews with poets........2007-03-10

i have been trying (with mixed results) to develop an appreciation of poetry over the last year. so many people seem to love the stuff, why not me then? the more you enjoy in life, the richer your life is. so i want to get there with this poetry stuff. i really do. so lately i've been arming myself with an arsenal of books that i think will help poetry shine for me as it does for others. this is the first of such books i have finished, and it was very enjoyable. it made me want to read poems and fall in love with their words. stanley kunitz (who i had never heard of), in particular, was fascinating in his interview, and the poetry samples of his work were wonderful. i immediately purchased a collection of his work and am looking forward to it. rather than explaining the nuts and bolts (tools) of poetry, this book illuminates the drive and vision of the poets included here. a good place to start to wet my appetite for poems is what i found in this collection. hopefully this will lead me onward to a new passion in life. hopefully i am not simply too stupid to make it up the hill into this world of words. wish me luck.

4 out of 5 stars Listening to a variety of poets.......2003-12-23

Bill Moyers loves to hear the tone and textures of poetry. This fondness is expressed in each of eleven poets selected from the Dodge Poetry Festival of 1998. The book starts with 90-year-old Stanley Kunitz reflection on Haley's Comet in 1910 to and continues to Robert Pinsky discussing his online poetry feature for Slate. There is music in many of these poems; most explicitly in Robert Pinsky's Ginza Gamba and references to Lester Young and Kurt Lamkin scatting with the kora, an African string instrument. If you can find the 2-hour PBS special on video (our library had a copy), you can hear the music of the kora and the Paul Winter Consort accompanies Coleman Barks.

The joy of a book is the diversity ranging from Coleman Barks translation of Rumi " I see my beauty in you", to the new Jewish tradition of the "Chuppah" of the Wedding, of Marge Piercy. Perhaps Mark Doty's two poems about a dog "Beau" most show the depth of a poet - from a very touching poem about licking a dieing friend, to the rambunctious "Golden Retrievals".

5 out of 5 stars A Jewel of Words for Writers and Poets!.......2003-11-26

Having waded thru Bill Moyers' TV series on Genesis - A Living Conversation and Joseph Campbell Interviews on Myth, I relate to him keenly as following his fame as Presidential Press Agent!
In his lengthy series on Genesis, exposing us to Prof Armstrong, Prof Brueggemann, scholars, rabbis, and pastors, all who spoke from their knowledge of Biblical Life. On reading, then placing the jewel back on the shelf...picking it up for a deeper reading each time, I decided it was worthy of far more attention.

His dedication to his Wife and Co-writer Judith, renewed my love for W.B. Yeats Poem of her "moments of glad grace..." Bringing me back to true depths of reading poetry aloud! Reminding me of hearing the Prison Inmates request within their therapy groups: "Chaplain, what do those profound words of poetry mean?" Bill Moyers addresses this question in satisfying ways! That may well have grown out of his training as a pastor.

For my read his interview with 90-yr old, Stanley Kunitz began with, "What do you love most?" A super reply, "Most of all, I love being alive!" For a poet who kept publishing his poetry at 90, he gave Bill his inner and out response by reading aloud two of his favorites: "The Round" about his seaside garden on the Cape which he created out of a barren sandhill "my little Eden." Then he provided reminders of his early, most famous poem that one reviewer, an English professor called the greatest poem she ever knew, read or studied: "The Touch" which he read aloud. He was floored by audience reponse from the Dodge Poetry Festival, with cheers, whistles, applause, shouts of "Bravo! Bravo!"

From ten other poets, only Jane Hirchfield was familiar. As Moyers asked for her comments on Zen meditation, she reminded me of a little gem by Anthony deMello, titled simply - "AWARENESS." She gave her words of meditation practice also simply developing an awareness to this moment; "As if you were to sit very quietly in the woods to be translucently awake." (like mind-fulness)

All in all, it speaks to me like another Bill Moyers Jewel!
      Retired Chaplain Fred W. Hood

5 out of 5 stars Bill Moyers is a National Treasure!!!!.......2003-01-11

As an English teacher, I already love reading books on poetry anyway, but Bill Moyers is such an amazing interviewer (as any viewer of his amazing NOW show on PBS already knows) that he brings out elements of the poems and the poets that make the reading more profound. I discovered some great poets I was not previously familiar with (Coleman Barks, Lorna Cervantes) and was thrilled to see Stanley Kunitz discuss one of the most riveting poems ever put to paper, "Touch Me." If you have not read this poem, go online immediately and check this one out. Kunitz is in his 90's, but is an inspiration to all by the vitality he exudes in his life and in his poetry. Including "Touch Me" in the book would have guaranteed 5 stars from me alone, but the other worthy additions make this a great read even for a casual lover of poetry.

      5 out of 5 stars What a GREAT book!.......2001-08-27

Hi, I am someone who has loved English Literature, and struggled with it during the high school years, as English was not my mother tongue. Poetry was always the hardest to grasp. I've always wished I could get to know it better, but I've felt the high barriers time and again. Over time, I began to distance myself from Poetry and secretly hated The Art. Until this book that is! =o) Bill Moyers is such a wonderful guide to this Difficult Land - he makes it accessible, and helps me to understand and better appreciate contemporary poetry. Each chapter is based on an interview with a certain poet. He starts off by describing each individual; how he or she looks, acts, and what type of influence(response) they have on the audience. It is like meeting someone in real life. Then the interview unfolds into a discussion about what the poet's life is like, how they began to write, and what their main themes are. But the virtue of this book lies in that the book doesn't stop at being a gossipy interview. It remains focused on getting to know their poems. Each chapter is punched in by several poems and the poet explains them, which is just so much better than the Cliff's Notes! Bill Moyers writes so beautifully, and with ease - I read this book in the subway during my commute. This is certainly a book to have for the leaves-falling autumn.

Hey! Adventurers! Do you want to become gladiators and fight in arena? Here it is! DDA1:Arena of Thyatis

Adventure in Thyatis is quite different from in Karameikos, in which most of the B series adventures take place. Karameikos has a lot of unsettled lands and dungeons which form many typical places for Basic level adventures. Thyatis, on the other hand, is a civilized land. The monsters you may find are mostly at circus. Fight there, and gain reputation. Besides the games in Coliseum, you may also be involved into the treacherous politics in Thyatis!

The adventure may not be your first or second adventure. Highly flexible for DM and players in role-playing here. A great challenge for DM.

This book is extremely valuable as reference after you have read it through carefully. Everything is in "Plain English", so whether you are a novice or advanced in the field, this will answer your questions. This is "a must" for anyone wanting to learn about Windows Server 2003.

Fantastic. Still reading it, but this is a worthy reference guide and a long but interesting read. The only book I'll own on the subject. No need for anything else, as far as I can tell.

3 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things..........2006-08-31

        Good:
-Good coverage of main topics (DHCP, DSN, AD).
        -Practical perspective, examples and troubleshooting.
-A lot of information that eventually could be useful.

        Bad:
-Fisically the book is too big, difficult to hold, this becomes a problem. It should be divided in two parts, the important topics and the rarely used information.
-Minasi exposition is not clear. He tries so hard to entertain the reader, and his writing lacks structure. He jumps to specific topics that extend many pages, use too many words to express simple things. Sometimes is really exasperating: "come on man, GET TO THE POINT!, don't waste my time".
-Have a lot of typos, i think because is based in the prior edition.

I think the book is too tangled to be useful for begginers, and too disperse to be helpful for experts. No doubt Minasi has profound knowledge of the product and writing skills, but needs STRUCTURE and SOBRIETY.

I rate the book three stars just because knowing nothing i made it settting a windows network with DSN,DHCP,Active directory,VPN and Terminal services. The book contains the information but the reader, not the author, is who organize it.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth coverage material for high-level active directory administrators... .......2007-07-07

Even if you are just getting your feet wet on the subject of network administration, this book is your lifesaver in the deep sea of Windows 2003 R2 Active Directory administration. You'll appreciate the coverage of day-to-day tasks, troubleshooting suggestions, best practices, and AD optimization techniques. This book is very well written and will guide you through the variety of scenarios. A must have for a serious professional.

4 out of 5 stars Good Administrative Reference.......2007-05-09

When I picked up this book, I was expecting something that focused on the Server 2003 R2 specific Active Directory additions and changes, as the title somewhat implies. Instead, you are provided a Windows 2003 Active Directory from A to Z for administrators that includes sections on the R2 additions.

Pretty much everything you need to know about the AD is covered. It starts with a very good overview of AD components and objects, leading into design objective and considerations for implementing an AD configuration appropriate for your environment. Once implemented, quite a few chapters are dedicated to administration of user, group, computer, and printer object using both the standard GUIs as well as command line tools; beyond standard tasks, delegation and auditing are also well covered. Group Policy topics include software installation, Windows settings, templates, AD object inheritance, and general AD storage and handling, again via the native GUI as well as the add-on Group Policy Management Console. Replication is also covered. Surprisingly, the authors touch on Schema extension, but failed to provide a useful "how-to".

Insofar as R2 specific sections, Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) and Identity Management for Unix both have very complete information for setup, configuration, troubleshooting, and administration both via the GUI as well as command line tools. I was disappointed in that Active Directory Application Mode (ADAM) was only briefly mentioned at the beginning of the book, but never actually addressed.
Quite a few chapters are also dedicated to troubleshooting. These sections are well organized, easy to follow, and cover general troubleshooting methodology, available tools, and reference tables for understanding specific AD errors.

Two additional sections are included that may be of interest to some. The first is an introduction to / overview of -Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM). Not a complete overview of that product, but very detailed in how to use MOM to assist in troubleshooting AD events and issues. The second is an overview of ADSI scripting for administrators, less of a learning resource and more of a cookbook of specific task scripts administrators could find useful.

Although the book is often a little to "Microsoft is Super", and there are areas that contain a little too much history or background and could be paired down some, the writing style is otherwise easy to read and understand, keeping the reader as interested and as involved as is possible given what the topic as a whole. No assumptions about the reader's prior knowledge of the AD is assumed, making this not only a good learning source for some, but a reference guide for everyone as well. Although scripting is introduced, prior experience with VBScript is a must if you wish to really use that section, and you should not expect to walk away fully versed in ADSI. All in all, as it does cover the R2 additions, this is a good replacement text for other Windows 2003 AD titles.

Very well put together book that will aid the system administrator new to Server 2003. It explains alot of the underlying functions needed to understand how/why Server 2003 acts/reacts.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Useful.......2006-11-03

Great book. With a MCSE Certificate, I still go back to this book for answers.

5 out of 5 stars Great read for all levels.......2006-07-13

This book is a fantastic resource for novices and experts alike. I relate this to a buffet of knowledge. If you are starving, there is plenty of content to fill you up. If you simply want to graze, there is enough high-level practical knowledge to appease.

The chapters are very well written and you can tell the authors have worked hard avoiding the "bland technical trap" that I so often encounter in this industry. These guys go above and beyond to educate while keeping you interested enough to keep turning pages.

        3 out of 5 stars Windows Server 2003 R2 review.......2007-09-22

I was wrong, sorry. I wanted to buy a book about Windows server 2003 in first time, not the upgrade revision for SP1 and R2. but do not care, the next time I will must check carefully the guide on the book that I want to buy. Guys, do not make the same error like me.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-10-30

I've 10 years in the biz, have read many books, attended many seminars. No one comes close to Mark. His Mastering Windows 2003 book is about as complete as it gets for Windows 2003 and the SP1/R2 book continues the trend. It's certainly not your typical geek fare and it's not MS marketing material. Mark tells you what MS have to say and importantly how it really works and should be configured, all with a sense of humour. I'm looking forward to the Vista security book. Be sure to also check out Mark's web forum and the Mastering W2003 book (this SP1/R2 book only covers the new features).

2 out of 5 stars Too much emphasis on theory, not enough hands on.......2007-06-11

The beginning of the ninth chapter is over 200 pages into the book and it begins like this. "Many people who read reference manuals such as this one often want to start "doing" right away, rather than read through the explanations until a complete understanding is in place before
taking any action." Anyone who reads through the first 8 chapters will have become more than just a little impatient at the repetitive and long winded theoretical concepts that could have been scaled down to 2 chapters. Building on a theoritcal foundation is essential. However, way too much time and energy is focused in this area IMO.

        4 out of 5 stars I like the book.......2003-12-30

While I'm pretty new to AD and have database backgrownd, I liked the book for two reasons: 1. AD explained in terms that are clear to me and 2. The author explains WHY's and provides background for features and behaviors

4 out of 5 stars Poor title, but great primer or overview for IT manager.......2003-07-20

My only substantive criticism of this book is its reluctance to define its audience, and correspondingly, using a title that misrepresents its content.

This is a book for a party that has former hands-on experience with a similar technology (e.g., X.500, NDS, LDAP) and needs to manage a Microsoft implementation. Or for a hands-on technician who is new to the technology in general.

The author is a former Novell employee and this is the third version of the book, so readers can expect some broad insights and no vendor bigotry. In many sections, one can tell that "Server 2003" was added to the text via "search and replace", but it matters little, and Server 2003 was directly addressed in areas where it matters (i.e., global catalog servers, etc.).

Architects and implementers should pass on this one, but managers and consultants should pick it up.

1 out of 5 stars The worst Active Directory book on the market.......2002-11-04

This is, with no doubt in my mind, the worst book on Active Directory I have seen. I can't believe Sybex decided to publish the second edition (let alone the first) with all errors and such superficial coverage of practically every Active Directory topic. I'm under impression that its author had no practical experience in dealing with any real Active Directory deployment. If you are serious about learning Active Directory from experts, check "Mission Critical Active Directory" by Jan De Clercq and Micky Balladelli (Digital Press) or "Windows 2000 Active Directory" by Alistair Lowe-Norris (O'Reilly).

3 out of 5 stars Good Primer text, not for knowledgeable technicians.......2002-01-16

Mastering Active Directory provides the framework to understand and set up the Active Directory system. However, it covers Active Directory in more general theoretical terms and does not do a thorough job of detailing how to plan and implement the system. If you are unfamiliar with NDS or other Directory Services, the LDAP protocols and similar then this book is a good place to start. If you are already familiar with such things then you will find this book to be lacking in useful information. My recommendation would be to purchase the book if you are new to the whole Directory concept and read it as a foundational text and then graduate to a more detailed text, such as Windows Active Directory Design and Deployment, before actually implementing Active Directory or attempting to resolve problems with it. For someone who already understands the concepts they should just go ahead and move to the above mentioned book and skip this one.
