Book Description
Using film and television in critical ways has become part of the fabric of society. John O'Connor presents a comprehensive survey of the types of methodological issues that must concern any historian addressing film or television as historical document or artifact. In an effort to train future generations to view everything they see more critically in the light of traditional humanistic values, he has laid out a framework for inquiry. It is designed to address the different types of investigation in which researchers characteristically use moving image materials and to highlight the varying methodological concerns which each type of argument brings to the fore.

Book Description
This unique and valuable collection of tips, tools, and scripts provides clear, concise, hands-on solutions that can be applied to the challenges facing anyone running a network of Linux servers from small networks to large data centers in the practical and popular problem-solution-discussion O'Reilly cookbook format. The Linux Cookbook covers everything you'd expect: backups, new users, and the like. But it also covers the non-obvious information that is often ignored in other books the time-sinks and headaches that are a real part of an administrator's job, such as: dealing with odd kinds of devices that Linux historically hasn't supported well, building multi-boot systems, and handling things like video and audio. The knowledge needed to install, deploy, and maintain Linux is not easily found, and no Linux distribution gets it just right. Scattered information can be found in a pile of man pages, texinfo files, and source code comments, but the best source of information is the experts themselves who built up a working knowledge of managing Linux systems. This cookbook's proven techniques distill years of hard-won experience into practical cut-and-paste solutions to everyday Linux dilemmas. Use just one recipe from this varied collection of real-world solutions, and the hours of tedious trial-and-error saved will more than pay for the cost of the book. But those who prefer to learn hands-on will find that this cookbook not only solves immediate problems quickly, it also cuts right to the chase pointing out potential pitfalls and illustrating tested practices that can be applied to a myriad of other situations. Whether you're responsible for a small Linux system, a huge corporate system, or a mixed Linux/Windows/MacOS network, you'll find valuable, to-the-point, practical recipes for dealing with Linux systems everyday. The Linux Cookbook is more than a time-saver; it's a sanity saver.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-03-26
Excellent Linux book! Gives step by step answers to common Linux problems in a "Problem - solution" style way. I'm a tad disappointed in the SAMBA section, but that really is a topic deserving of a book of its own.
Very Useful, but it's Hit-and-Miss.......2006-09-11
Because this is a "cookbook," it gives you recipies -- step-by-step instructions for performing specific tasks.
This makes Linux Cookbook EXTREMELY useful when it has a recipie you need, and it often gives you a good starting point when you need to do something that isn't specifically covered.
For example, let's say you need to setup a mail server, which you've never done before. As long as you're willing to use the mail tools she describes (which are perfectly good tools), then this book is the fastest way to get the job done. She also shows you how to make sure the server will be secure.
I'm glad I have this book on my shelf, I recommend it, and I refer to it whenever I need to do something new in Linux. The problem is, you can't have a step-by-step recipie for everything. When this book hits the mark, it's the best book you can have, but you cannot rely on this as your only Linux book.
Succinct and clear to understand . . ........2006-05-10
A well-organised and clearly written collection of useful commands and solutions to help one along with the often exasperating arcana of Linux. Covers all flavours and is a 'must have' book.
Perfect binding keeps the book open at the desired page.......2005-09-28
... which comes in real handy considering how often I reference it.
Chapter 10 (Patching, Customizing, and Upgrading Kernels) and Chapter 12 (Managing the Bootloader and Multi-Booting) helped me recompile my kernel for the first time. Not only are the instructions clear, but the author also made sure to explain each step so I knew why I was typing a certain command. There's even a section on how to create an initrd image for SCSI drive users, which I had a hard time finding on the web.
This book does an excellent job covering all the basics, and it's worth spending the time to read it from beginning to end. I certainly see myself getting a lot of mileage from it.
It was perfect to get me moving on LINUX.......2005-08-10
I wanted to become more experienced with UNIX so I had the Ubuntu distribution installed in my computer. I spent six months having a hard time getting simple things done until I came accross this book.
It is organized in such a way that it is easy to get to do what you want/need and, what's better, the explanations provided give you insights on how UNIX works. After a while, you will find yourself doing new stuff on your own.
If you want to get into UNIX but knows little about it my advice for you is: get this book and jump into LINUX - it is worth it!

Mmmmmmmmmm Spaaaaammmmmm!.......2007-05-26
For Breakfast I have Spam. For Lunch, Spam, and for Dinner, Spam. This cookbook comes in real handy for my voracious appetite for Spam.
Spam: King Of Hawaiian Canned Meats.......2006-08-10
On a per capita basis, Hawaii consumes more than three and a half times more Spam annually than any other state (that's four million cans a year, all told.) The author claims, and makes a good case that Spam is "Hawaii's soul food." After World War Two when Spam became the brunt of derogatory jokes in most of the world, Hawaiians continued their Spam consumption at a voracious rate. In the process they got more and more imaginative in the preparations. I travel to Hawaii on business quite a bit, and can vouch for the popularity of Spam: even the Local McDonald's has a Spam breakfast. I just had it last week, in fact: it consists of two pieces of fried Spam, scrambled eggs, and two scoops of rice. Try finding that on the mainland.
While I admit to having the McSpam breakfast as a novelty, Hawaiians take their Spam very seriously, and this book showcases some extremely imaginative methods of preparing Spam. It has "Spam and Mushroom Rolls," "Spam Musubi," "Kalua Spam," "Spam Won Ton," "Spam Chowder," "Spam Fu Young," "Spam and Zucchini Omelet," and the unpleasant sounding "Basic Spam-Fishcake Pupu Mix," among many other recipes.
To say that there is a wide variety of Spam recipes here is quite an understatement, but there's much more than just Spam here. In a continuing homage to the Hawaiian love of canned and potted meat food products, there are also recipes for sardines, corned beef, and Vienna sausages, all of which are wildly popular on the islands. Enjoy the "Sardines and Warabi [Fern Shoots]," "Mabel's Kim Chee Sardines" (which is a gastronomic line in the sand I refuse to cross), "Sardine and Tofu Souffle," "Puukolii Pork 'n Beans," "Vienna Sausage Pupus," "and something named simply "Pokey-Pokey" (Filipino scrambled eggs complete with Vienna sausage, eggplant, and garlic.)
The book contains many basic, yet amusing, illustrations, and a glossary of terms germane to Hawaiian Spam cookery, which helps the neophyte Spam chef substantially.
If you want a single book on cooking Spam Hawaiian style, this is the best volume you will ever find. I'm not saying that I would eat everything in this book, but I am saying that this is the book I recommend above all others in the quest for preparing authentic Hawaiian Spam dishes!
'Ai iho!
SPAM no ka oi!.......2001-01-13
When I first moved away from Hawaii in 1995, my grandmother gave me this book to take along with me to Japan. In Japan, the SPAM there still has the "key" to open the cans. Anyway, I used several of the recipes such as: "SPAM MUSUBI", "Korean Style SPAM", and "Sato Shoyu SPAM" and introduced them to my Japanese colleagues who immediately fell in love with SPAM. I told my Japanese colleagues to visit 7-11 in Hawaii to see that SPAM MUSUBI is even sold there!! Now I live in Indiana where SPAM is well, not as popular as it is back in Hawaii. I have brought SPAM MUSUBI to work where my new colleagues have frowned in disbelievement, but after they tried it, they did not have a bad thing to say about this ingenious SPAM creation. Ms. Kondo Corum's book is well written and provides a glossary of unfamiliar terms for the non-Hawaii person. Besides SPAM, she also covers some other local island favorites such as: vienna sausages, corned beef, and sardines. The recipes and instructions are easy to read and the meals are easy to prepare. The artwork adds to the appeal of the recipes. If you love SPAM and would like to get recipes that you would normally not find here in the 48 states, this is your book!
It is amazing what you can make with SPAM!!.......1998-07-23
All of the dishes are easy to prepare as well as tasty. Kids especially love the main courses and appetizers. Spam is practically a staple diet of the locals in Hawaii, and you will find "spam musubi", soyu spam, etc. at many picnics and beach outings. Unbelievably, there are also very elegant dinners in this book, that you would not even think could be made with Spam!

Excellent!.......2007-08-01
Everyone is always complaining about spam and frankly I do not know why. This stuff is quite healthy and a great alternative to most those veggie burgers the vegan nazis are trying to get me to eat. Nothing like real meat though but anyways why is everyone always complaining about spam and associating it with email? This cookbook is a marvelous one yes it sure is.
Yum!.......2004-06-09
We threw a Spam themed birthday party for a friend - everyone had to bring a food item made from Spam. Just when I was freaking out about not knowing what to bring, I discovered this book. (Which proves that there is a book on everything!)
Since I'm not a cook nor too creative in the kitchen, I was pretty nervous about making food and expecting friends to eat it. But then I realized, hey it's Spam, no one expects it to be good! The recipe I picked was the Spam Risotto. It was super easy to make and - gasp! - it tasted really good!
I loaned this book to another party go-er and she whipped up the Spam loaf (with salmon) and it was surprisingly tasty as well.
Previous to purchasing this book, the only way I'd ever had Spam was fried up and in a sandwich, but now the door is open to many possibilities.
This little book has all the kitch to make it cool and some damn good recipes inside!
Spamtastic.......2001-04-05
This is a bold and imaginative cookery book. Eggers shows flair with a daring East/West fusion in her Thai influenced Spam with Mint and Brocoli: tender chunks of luncheon loaf stir-fried with fish sauce, chili, brown sugar and brocoli then topped with fresh mint. Look out too for her Spam en Croute - slab of reconstituted pork coated in a rich mushroom pate and wrapped in filo pastry. It's a triumph. That distinctive taste of the abbatoir floor you get with Spam comes through best, perhaps, in a simple yet delicious Spam Tartare - raw Spam, ground with anchovies, egg yolk, mustard, oil and Worcestershire Sauce. Mmmmmm. Heaven.

Customer Reviews:
Little more than a reprint of the game's online help.......2006-12-24
I expect a guide like this to pick up where the instruction manual leaves off. But this book spends 3/4 of its pages just reproducing what is already included with the book's online and printed help. The rest provides some very abstract ideas on strategy. It does not tell you what units or buildings to build or when to build them. Civ 4 is a great game, but you won't get much here. Stick to the game's manual and visit some of the fan sites for helpful hints.
A Dissenting Point of View.......2006-08-22
After reading all the pans of this book, I thought I would put in a dissenting point of view. I am completely new to the Civilization series and need all the help I can get. I think generally the book is doing a good job getting me up to speed. I do agree, though, that the drawbacks of the book are significant and make the book frustrating to use.
First, what works about the book:
* covers basic strategies
* reproduces tech tree and unit descriptions
* gives strategy and tactical advice for each unit and resource
* includes tips from the game testers
* doesn't assume reader is familiar with previous games in the series
* is good for people (like me) who don't want to read the Civilopedia online any more than they have to
What doesn't work about the book:
* text is too small! Much of the joy of reading the book is squandered by having to squint -- and I don't wear glasses.
* no index. Publishers that release books with no indexes might be trying to save money, but they really reduce the book's usability
* screenshots are so small (some are 1.5" x 1.25" -- what were they thinking?) and are in black and white, so they are mostly too frustrating to bother trying to understand. Whoever tried to save money by printing in 9 point text made the same decision with the screenshots.
* screenshots have no caption beneath them. What is the screenshot attempting to demonstrate? Text only sometimes can be counted on to refer to the screenshot. The combination of smallness, lack of color and no captions makes the screenshots mostly useless to this reader. Pretty quickly I learned that they add no value to the book.
Final assessment: I paid a grand total of $13 for the book and definitely am getting my money's worth. The thing is that, given the option, I would have gladly paid $20 for the above drawbacks to be rectified.
Basic.......2006-08-17
If you have ever played a civ game before, this guide is basic. It does lay out the tech's though and puts you on the fast track. It is a real quick read, with half of the book dedicated to the civilopedia.
Low on content and cheap to boot!.......2006-07-21
I'll agree with other reviewers that the content doesn't provide much supplemental information, but I confess a preference for hard copy documentation when I'm using software. It's the booklover in me, plus the fact that I like to look at the manual and the game I'm playing at the same time.
My complaint with this book is that it is cheaply produced and difficult to read. I've grown used to the 4-color Prima guides. They are excelently laid out and easy on the eye. The Civ IV guide, however, is B&W and the font size is 9 at best. Unless you have great vision, you'll find yorself wanting to use a magnifier. It's fascinating. The Prima Sims2 Nightlife manual has 224 pages, all 4-color, and is a pleasure to read. The Brady Civ IV manual has 188 B&W pages and is a complete pain to peruse. Both have list prices of $19.99. One guess which company is delivering the best value.
Please don't waste your money.......2006-05-06
This barely qualifies as a book, let alone a guide. This points out, vividly, one of the drawbacks of buying books online; I never would have bought this book in a store - I would have spent 30 seconds flipping through the book, shook my head in disgust, and gone on looking.
This book is such a rip off, amazon should do something about it -- like put a big red border around this pages w/a "everyone hates this book" warning -- or better yet, stop ripping off your customers & remove this from inventory.
