In this slim and chatty handbook, veteran Hollywood director Dmytryk describes the tools that are available to film directors and discusses how they can best make use of them. Dmytryk talks about the power of the cinematic set-up, the way a director can manipulate symbolism and metaphor, and how filmmakers can convince their audiences that what they are watching is indeed real.

Book Description
Combining topics typically found in a number of different textbooks for video production courses, Video Production Techniques is an integration of theory and production techniques. Diefenbach covers all the basics for writing, shooting, and editing videos, and as a result, this text has the potential to be crossdisciplinary, touching on subjects within advertising, public relations, organizational communication, and education.
Chapters contain objectives, key terms, assignments and questions and also include essential elements such as film stills and diagrams that are designed to provide a wide-ranging introduction to students of video production. These components will give readers a basic exposure to the aesthetic elements of production, in addition to simply the mechanics, and prepare them for a more in-depth study of production in upper-level courses.
Diefenbach's extensive professional background is an asset to the book's focus on practical applications for corporate video, documentary, and instruction.

All due respect to the Gambinos and the Genoveses, but the Italian mob families aren't the only gangsters to make for compelling memoirs. In terms of relentless ruthlessness and its obsession with the almighty dollar, the Irish mob of Boston's James "Whitey" Bulger could match its New York counterparts hit for bloody hit. For decades, Edward J. MacKenzie, Jr. (a.k.a. Eddie Mac) was a drug dealer, enforcer, and key associate of Bulger (on the lam as this book was published). Mac's first-person account of those years is rife with more gory details per page than the entire last season of The Sopranos.
By the brutal code of honor and loyalty in the streets, the candid dishing of such dirt marks MacKenzie as a world-class rat, second only to Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, the man who put John Gotti away. But Eddie Mac has some justification in spilling the beans; in exchange for his tips, the Feds turned a blind eye toward his crimes. (It's also worth nothing that Bulger himself was an informant for the FBI.) The author certainly doesn't portray himself as any sort of hero or "gangster with a heart of gold." Witness his charming account of one of many attempts to "enlighten" a wayward associate: "Probation notwithstanding, I had to open Steve's eyes a little. I headed over to Dunkin' Donuts and bought a cup of coffee for $1.24. Medium, black, scalding hot. . . .Steve was still in his car, sleeping like a baby. The window was down and he had his head against the door, hands under his cheeks. I poured the hot coffee down the side of his face, making sure to get some on his eyeballs. . . I swear if I'd had enough money to buy the gasoline that day that's what I would have done. . . but I'd only had $1.30, so the coffee had to do."
Although MacKenzie has not one but two ghost writers (Karas is a contributor to People magazine and the author of The Onassis Women, while Muscato is a self-described "strategic communications consultant"), the prose never rises above the level of the sleaziest pulp fiction. But that of course is exactly its appeal, and fans of the true-crime genre will find Street Soldier a supreme pleasure, guilty or not. --Jim DeRogatis
Book Description
For decades the FBI let James “Whitey” Bulger get away with murder, allowing him continued control of his criminal enterprise in exchange for information. He went on the lam in 1995 and today follows top-ranked Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List.
Edward J. MacKenzie, Jr. was a drug dealer and enforcer who would do just about anything for Bulger. In this compelling eyewitness account, Eddie Mac delivers the goods on his one-time boss and on such former associates as Stephen “The Rifleman” Flemmi and turncoat FBI agent John Connolly.
Street Soldier is also a story of the search for family, for acceptance, for respect, loyalty, and love. Abandoned by his parents at the age of four, Mackenzie became a ward of the state, suffered physical and sexual abuse, and eventually drifted into Bulger’s orbit.
The Eddie Mac who emerges in these pages is complex: An enforcer who was also a national kick-boxing champion; a womanizer who fought for custody of his daughters; a kid never given much of a chance who went on, as an adult, to earn a college degree in three years; a man who lived by a strict code of loyalty but also helped set up a sting operation that would net one of the largest hauls of cocaine ever seized.
Street Soldier is as disturbing and fascinating as a crime scene, as heart-stopping as a bar fight, and at times as darkly comic as Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction or Martin Scorsese’s Good Fellas.
Customer Reviews:
Best of Show.......2007-09-17
Better than the Kevin Weeks expose, and far grittier than the journalistic looks at the Bulger gang, this one takes the cake for depravity with readable writing to make it go down like acid. As Mob tales go, the Boston version is more blue collar, but every bit as riveting as insider looks at the best of the New York gangs. The early section on the author's depraved and deprived childhood is particularly chilling. If only these guys had been so literary back when they were actually gangsters, maybe they wouldn't have gotten into so much trouble.
Better then a book about LA gang members.......2007-03-17
After reading this you get a sence that these guys have more brains then LA gang memebers.
Who are basically just playing the roll.
Street soilder is exactly what he says he is.
Solider in a street of reality.
Ups and Downs from childhood to grownup.
Much better then anything you can pick up on California gang culture.
Tells it like it is!.......2006-07-24
I read the other South Boston Irish Mobs books recently, and find them all self serving and egotisitcal. Weeks, Shea, want us all to think they are the real deal, and can out fight anybody, then again, don't they all? In Mackenzie's book Street Soldier, he pulls no punches, basicaly tells it like it is! Calls himself a predator, a scumbag. etc. Mackenzie's book tops them all as far as taking the reader into the dark, hard world of the Irish Mob. He then describes the good with the bad, and explains brilliantly, "that in every bushell of apples, there's always a few bad ones." The other so called authors can Complain all they want about who's who, but the reviews tell it all, and Mackenzie has them all beat. I give Street Soldier five stars, the best of the bunch.
ok but is it true.......2006-05-12
the book will keep you interested, but is it true after reading Brutal and brother bulger and rat [...] you don't hear much about this guy so I can say this guys thinks he's bigger than who he is.
Addictive.......2005-06-30
Absolutely phenomenal. Terrifying, addictive, like watching a train wreck. Who knew humanity could be so depraved, furthermore, you have to question yourself for being so drawn to it. The details of every awful, sick twisted event almost bring you into the setting where you can smell it. It teeters on the edge of truth, but after having read several books, grown up in the area, heard the legends, it falls back to truth. Must read, but not for the faint hearted.

Book Description
As a public school teacher, Joe Marshall grew sick and tired of watching his most promising students fall prey to the lure of gangs, drugs, and crime, and end up either dead or in prison. Finding that neither the justice nor school system seemed willing even to try to address the underlying problems--to give the kids the kind of information and assistance they really needed--he leapfrogged right over the system and co-founded the Omega Boys Club, based upon the belief that young people of the inner city want a way out of the life they're in, but just don't know how to get out. Since the club's inception in 1987, with a handful of kids in a community center basement, he and his small army of street soldiers have already helped 600 kids out of gang-banging and drug-dealing, and pushed, tutored, driven and even funded 140 inner-city kids into colleges around the country.
Four years ago, to direct kids at risk to the Boys Club, he started a weekly radio call-in program called "Street Soldiers" that is now broadcast throughout California to an audience of over 200,000. His callers ask tough questions about gangs, drugs, teen pregnancy, and the multiple pressures of life in the inner city today. "Street Soldiers" not only provides callers with a lifeline and listeners with a practical resource for hope, but has repeatedly averted gang warfare and stopped "payback" violence before they occurred.
Street Soldier is the story of Joe Marshall's success and, as virtually the only good news coming out of the inner city today, it is incumbent upon all of us--citizens, parents, legislators, and teachers--to listen. From Marshall's own college days in the turbulent sixties and his early years as an idealistic young teacher, the book moves to the heartbreaking lessons that compelled him to do something. Street Soldier then takes readers through the day-by-day trials and tribulations of his efforts in the `hood, searching for effective ways to convince gun-toting crack dealers and gang members to take pride in their race, take responsibility for their actions, and take charge of their lives. Along the way the book goes inside the minds and lives of a handful of the kids who transform themselves in the mast dramatic way possible--and a few who sadly cannot. In the end, Street Soldier is a call to each of us to help shape the future of this generation at risk, to help our children grow strong--to be street soldiers in our own communities.
Filled with tense confrontations and joyous celebrations, Street Soldier is an uplifting story by and about one man who makes a difference--and the cure his story may well provide for the cancer eating at our nation today.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to follow. Must Read........2006-03-03
Thank you Dr Marshall for writing the story of the Omega Boys Club. I think you have outlined here, very well, how anyone with knowledge, dedication and insight can touch the hearts of our youth!
The Black man is becoming extinct and we, as a nation, are allowing it to happen. Thank you for not tolerating it!
Can you name the risk factors for youth violence?.......1996-12-28
Marshall has succeeded where others before him have failed.
Street Soldiers offers all the "urban reality" stories to get
you out of your comfortable chair, but doesn't simply stop
there. Outlining a clear and concise approach for dealing with
youth violence, Marshall has put forth the solution for
tackling one of our nations hidden epidemics. Whether your
a frontline worker with youth or not, you will find this a must
read book to find out how you can best help stem this incidious
disease impacting all of us.

Customer Reviews:
Window into other minds.......2007-03-22
Contemporary German letters and opinions from World War I are still surprisingly difficult to find in English translation, and this book gives us valuable first hand insights. They are immediate and often fascinating views of war, untouched by subsequent ideas and hindsight. This can be said with confidence, because the original German version was published by way of memorial to its authors who were killed in battle. The only real weakness is that this volume does not cover the whole war, and its restriction to ex-students somewhat narrows the valuable window that we are given. Recommended reading.
Very Moving.......2004-03-27
Awesome book... I was very moved to read this collection of articulate letters from German soldiers.
This book reminded me of "All Quiet on the Western Front" in that it showed we are all victims of war no matter what side we fought on.
I like that the author gives a brief background on the authors of each letter.
You will enjoy this book
One of the best WWI books.......2003-02-01
This book contains letters written by German soldiers during World War I. Every writer in the book was killed in combat. The letters are, as one would expect, incredibly moving. They also contain some of the most graphic descriptions of battle I have ever read. Many of the letters talk about what war does to those who are religious, while others are just pragmatic attempts to convey the experience of battle to those back home. These letters are important because they show how people under such incredible stress are able to communicate something of value to those they love. I highly recommend this book. It is not sentimental and does not force you to draw conclusions; it simply makes you think about what would you do under the same circumstances. Excellent introduction by Jay Winter as well.

Book Description
This collection features I Was Looking for a Street, Willeford's personal reminiscence of the Great Depression, riding the rails across America's southwest as a young hobo, and Something about a Soldier, a remarkable recreation of a young soldier's recollection of a peacetime era now far in the past. Lively and unrestrained, these revealing pages will be relished by both old soldiers and today's civilians.
I Was Looking for a Street - The personal reminiscence of an orphaned boy without expectations. It reflects the stories of thousands of homeless men and boys, without roots, direction or work, adrift in the American southwest during the Great Depression - a panorama of desert and high mesa, cafes and bordellos, relief camps and soup kitchens, railroad yards and hobo jungles.
Something About a Soldier - This funny, rich raunchy autobiography re-creates the adventures of a very young soldier in the U.S. Army at the height of the Depression. Charles Willeford was sixteen in 1935 when he signed up and was sent to the Philippines. And the Philippines of those days was like a place out of another century.
Perfect in its depiction of an often brutish way of life - and the colorful mingling of unfettered boys, bitter old men, and even intellectuals - Something About a Soldier is a rare portrait of a vanished army.
Customer Reviews:
Willeford.......2006-09-18
I just finished reading I Was Looking For A Street in more or less one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The story itself is fascinating and reads like a Willeford novel in terms of style, honest humor, and obsessive attention to detail. The fact that it is autobiographical is the really haunting part. The atmosphere felt like that of Willeford's Hombre From Sonora / The Difference, and in fact this memoir is mostly set in the same general part of the world. There are several typos in this paperback version and I'm surprised that the photographs included are of such low resolution -- they look like grainy photocopies and are printed directly on the raw paper, rather than glossy inserts or whatever. However, that doesn't detract from the text in any way. You can find the same photographs of Willeford and his family on the Internet after some searching.
It's amazing!.......2000-05-26
I read one of these books (Something about a Soldier)standing up in the UC Berkeley Library. It is a wonderful, evocative well written account that is funny and moving. I finally made a photocopy of it. It's that good. The second book (I was looking for a Strret) I read when a friend brought back a rare copy from the UK. It is haunting and beautifully written, about a time foreign to most of us.
His prose is wonderful and should be savored. These books are among his finest.

Customer Reviews:
Worst book ever written?.......2007-04-26
This may be the worst book ever written. The "arguments" are not only circular, but contradict one another. Terms are poorly defined and lack continuity. The focus for change is inappropriately placed on the business side of the business/consumer relationship. I'm dumber for having read it.
informs as well as it entertains.......2006-09-08
Chris "CC Storm" Laszlo has done it again! Another best seller that informs as well as it entertains. He makes compelling arguments promoting environmental sustainability via fuel cells operating on a Slim Jim and Mellow Yellow mixture rather than Hydrogen. The author is no doubt a briliant business and social strategist, but he is a really nice guy, good looking and available too! I can't wait for the sequel coming in December: "Son of Sustainable Company". Happy reading!
A great primer.......2006-05-31
This book is an effective primer on this important cultural trend and is divided into three parts:
(1) The basic ideas behind sustainable development and value
(2) Four examples of sustainable companies
(3) Some business tools for creating and measuring stakeholder value
In Part I, Chris Laszlo presents the key concepts, history, importance of developing an increasingly conscious, sustainable and responsible business. He covers all the major elements of sustainability (such as triple bottom-line, various stakeholders, measurements, ethics etc.) but in language that does not reduce these exciting topics and trends to dull, academic abstraction. Most interesting is Part II on successful corporate models of sustainability (such as Patagonia clothing, ARCO) which give a real human face to the concepts. Many managers will find most useful the charts, graphs, models for creating, communicating and managing an effective sustainability program. Its not an MBA-level of detail, but a solid, conceptual starting point that will be appreciated to those newer to these ideas. However, I found his language a more academically labored in Part III, reducing its effectiveness to engage. Other popular books on the topic worth reading are "Natural Capitalism" and "Cradle-to-Cradle."
The business value of sustainability.......2003-10-03
This landmark work helps managers assess the business value of sustainability. Many companies are keen to show that they are responsible corporate citizens. They are taking lots of actions on the environmental and social front, but have no idea which ones are important for their businesses. This book offered me a structured management process for thinking about "stakeholder" value-at-risk and value-opportunities. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a set of practical guidelines to integrating stakeholders into their company's core activities. It helped me to make the business case for greater corporate responsibility in a language that other managers could understand
