"Dancing...the very heart of life and all its hopes.".......2006-06-24
Set in Donegal in 1936, during Ireland's change from an agrarian to a more industrial economy, this screenplay of Brian Friel's haunting ensemble drama, on which Frank McGuinness collaborated, tells the story of five sisters and their priest brother in the rural community of Ballybeg on the eve of the harvest festival of Lughnasa. Forty-ish Kate, who sees herself "in charge," is the only real wage earner in the family. Rigid, severe, and completely lacking in humor, she believes pagan celebrations, such as Lughnasa, which provide fun and enjoyment in the countryside, are "uncivilized."
Her brother Jack, the priest, however, on furlough from his missionary work in Uganda, is now virtually a pagan himself. His work has shown him the need of the poor for happiness, dancing, and community celebration, even if it is not church-sanctioned. The other Mundy sisters help illustrate the ironic chasm between Kate's attitudes and those of Fr. Jack. Maggie, the fun-loving, free-spirited, and most humorous of the sisters, constantly bursts into song and dance and longs to go to the town dance. Christina feels no shame whatever about her son, a love-child, and thoroughly enjoys the summer visit of his father, Gerry Evans, with whom she dances spontaneously.
Aggie and Rose, who earn small wages knitting gloves, work tirelessly as the family's sad, "unpaid servants," constantly chafing against Kate's imposition of her own values on them. When the local priest fails to rehire Kate because of Fr. Jack's apparent paganism, the family is devastated, but it is at that moment that they recognize the need to celebrate life itself.
The message in this screenplay is weaker than in the stage play, with much less criticism directed at the "clan of the round collar" and its harsh edicts. Kate is less hostile in the film, and the fates of Aggie and Rose are withheld until the end, for dramatic reasons, and not revealed early, as in the play. Fr. Jack's paganism, regarded as a mental aberration in the screenplay, is treated empathetically in the play, which, though dark, is ultimately a joyful celebration of life itself, a life not bound by organized religion. The film, perhaps in the interest of not offending its audience, suppresses this point of view, presenting a less assertive, and perhaps less realistic, viewpoint. n Mary Whipple
Book Description
Oprah Winfrey is the protagonist of the story to be told here, but this book has broader intentions, begins Eva Illouz in this original examination of how and why this talk show host has become a pervasive symbol in American culture. Unlike studies of talk shows that decry debased cultural standards and impoverished political consciousness, Oprah Winfrey and the Glamour of Misery asks us to rethink our perceptions of culture in general and popular culture in particular.
At a time when crises of morality, beliefs, value systems, and personal worth dominate both public and private spheres, Oprah's emergence as a cultural form -- the Oprah persona -- becomes clearer, as she successfully reiterates some of our most pressing moral questions. Drawing on nearly one hundred show transcripts; a year and a half of watching the show regularly; and analysis of magazine articles, several biographies,
O Magazine, Oprah Book Club novels, self-help manuals promoted on the show, and hundreds of discussions on the Oprah Winfrey Web site, Illouz takes the Oprah industry seriously, revealing it to be a multilayered "textual structure" that initiates, stages, and performs narratives of suffering and self-improvement that resonate with a wide audience and challenge traditional models of cultural analysis. This book looks closely at Oprah's method and her message, and in the process reconsiders popular culture and the tools we use to understand it.

Best RPG Ever!.......2003-02-11
This is a great game for anyone who has ever wanted to be a chartoon character. Or just for anyone who loves cartoons. Like the best board games (Balderdash, Malarky), the important thing is having fun and making the other players laugh. ...
Prepare for Insanity and Mayhem!!!!!.......2002-02-07
Toon: The Cartoon Role-playing Game was published by Steve Jackson Games in the mid-1980s, and many copies of the sourcebooks are still available with a little effort. This RPG primarily focuses upon American-style cartoons where truly anything goes!!! The entire focus of Toon is to be funny and to do and say things which are funny... and many anime characters and series fit quite well into this worldview: Debutante Detective Corps, Project A-ko, Otaku no Video, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, Idol Project, the Slayers saga, City Hunter, D4 Princess, Mezzo Forte, etc.
One of the most popular Toon campaigns is the Toon Olympics. Those familiar with the Hanna-Barbara Laff-a-Lympics series already have an idea of the premise of Toon Olympics: Bring together many animated characters from various series/genres and have them compete in a number of sporting events. When I first played the Toon Olympics, one player created his own cursed medieval knight character with a sentient sword which didn't always do as he commanded (which he later played in a Sailor Moon RPG campaign I was then running), someone else played a unicorn (who eventually had to drive a car), another played as Lara Croft, and I personally played as A-ko - truly an eclectic bunch!!!
However, anime fans should NOT overlook Toon as a role-playing option. Granted, Toon is not as adaptable to a wide variety of campaigns (for campaign genre/character adaptability, see the Big Eyes Small Mouth second edition sourcebook); however, for a change of pace, Toon can be used to give almost any anime character (pre-existing or original) a chance to be a comedian. For example, when I played in another Toon Olympics as A-ko, I called upon B-ko to fight a Pokémon in my place, with the promise of conceding C-ko to her if she should win (that was funny enough to earn me an extra Plot Point)!!!
Great game but book binding is bad.......2001-06-12
This game is the best. The only problem I have is that every page you read falls out after you turn the page. Spiral binding would be great for this game because the game master has to use the book often if he is following any of the preplaned adventures. I would give it 5 stars if the binding were better.
The best way to let your mind go!.......2001-05-28
This is the only rpg Ive seen that anyone can master in one or two tries. Your dreams to be bugs bunny or Daffy come true in this classic rpg. A must buy!
uninhibited wackiness in an RPG.......2000-11-10
First off, let me warn you that I have a scenario in this book. Let me tell you why. The rules to this game are so EASY that this has become a timeless classic. In this day, I think paper RPGs are outdated and useless. TOON will never be. You can teach this game to people who have never roleplayed before within minutes and they will love it as long as they have a sense of humor and love cartons. One of the things I love about playing TOON is the amount of complaints you get from the neighbors. Played right, this is one noisy game. With the possible exception of scenarios, you never really need to get the book expansions. They're nice but TOON is one of the most self-contained roleplaying games ever written. I get no royalties or benefits from you buying this book, I just love it to death and know you will be happy if you get it. have a blast. I like to use it to warm up a group before we do the "serious" roleplaying for the evening or when it's just too noisy an environment for anything else. Heck, I once winged it off the top of my head at a party with 15 people once. If you're still reading this and wondering about my contribution, it's the scenario "Jerks on a Beanstalk". Thanks for wondering.

Disappointing effort for a game that really needs a good Prima Guide.......2006-05-02
I bought this book because the documentation that comes with Empire at War is so scanty, and unfortunately I must say I'm rather disappointed. The most important bit of info you'll need is a chart telling you the income, trade, value per mine and number of build slots per planet - something that took me about 1 - 1 1/2 hours to research on my own and manually enter in the planet entries. It would have been even simpler to count hardpoints, prices, etc. for the ships and list that up on the various ship entries, or even better, on a 1 or 2 page chart - again, something that would have been very simple and basic for a researcher to have done.
There are some nice tips for the multiplayer game, but I wouldn't depend on them unless you fancy being eaten alive by the other players. Most of the tactical and strategic advice is basic, common sense stuff - get your income up, balance your unit and technology builds, etc - but again, the excellent charts and data tables that one expects in a Prima Guide and that one would use to make such decisions are entirely absent.
Spending an hour or two collating important data like this into the book before publishing it would seem basic to me, but clearly not to whoever put this book out. The fact that it's about a third more expensive than other Prima Guides (probably because the game it covers is a hot Lucas Arts title) doesn't help matters.
All in all, unless you're a collector or have money to burn, I wouldn't bother with it. If you really feel the need to get it, at least check any major bookstore or game shop and read the insides BEFORE you buy it. Because failing to do so is how this particular gamer got took.

Great Firestarter!!! A++ .......2006-12-14
Being the middle of Winter, many of us are huddling in our homes to protect ourselves from the cold. Some of us have problems getting the fireplace going.
No more!
Since the information in this book is completely outdated - and since no one with any self respect plays the trainwreck known as Star Wars Galaxies - this item is just what is required to keep your family warm in the winter.
While you are at it - if you want to quit playing Star Wars Galaxies - you will get a higher return on your investment by using $15 to start the fire each month.
Highly recommended over giving your money to Sony Online... Entertainment?
Fans stripped of their will to play due marketing.......2006-02-16
In the beginning, Star Wars Galaxies had such an intense feel to it, that it took you "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." But no more. Here are examples:
1) Jedi used to be rare! People would choose between so many different professions, and relate with others and help out the guilds and communities! Everyone loved a group-hunting, and that special feeling that maybe, just maybe you'd eventually feel a connection to the Force and be one of the lucky chosen to start the path of Jedi.
2) Customer Service used to be great! So many willing helpers, assistants and in-game staff were there to help out if you were ever faced with a problem.
3) Everyone and every career in SWG was important and/or needed!
however...
Sony Online Entertainment wanted more. The wanted to obtain more customers, so they thought: "Let's make it so more people can be Jedi, that should bring in the hardcore fans". And so they did. They created "holocrons" that TOLD players how to become Jedi. Now, Jedi was accessible to anyone trying hard enough! It wasn't that bad, I guess... It was a lot of hard work still.
After a while, the Jedi population grew. SoE enjoyed this, and made it so everyone could become Jedi. They spat on the face of the hard-working Jedi by making it a common thing. And worst, they changed the way the game played. They changed buttons, and graphics, and how things worked. They repeatedly wiped cities clean, and destroyed things that players held dear... for what's the use of playing such game if your rewards are being cancelled by sony?
Nowadays we have the CU (combat upgrade) and the NGE (New game experience) which, for the lack of a better word, stinks.
Needless to say, SoE broke this game. It broke it and robbed it of the very thing that made it special and for what? Money alone. SoE doesn't care if you like it, so long you pay that monthly fee, they'll shove anything down your throat and tell you: "Take it".
I don't recommend this game, because if you play it, you may come to "like" it... only to be dissapointed in the end, like I am, down the line. I wish the game would be as it once had been, but... no more. R.I.P SWG - you gave me friends and great fun for almost a year.
PS. Over 60% of the players quit the game since those changes took place. I don't have to lie, simply read these commentaries. When I joined SWG, I had to pick a galaxy to begin: Most of them were closed to a high number of players. If you log in today, you'll see the description: "light population". And when you go in those specific planets, it'll feel like you're in a ghost town. SWG is broke, forevermore. Thanks for ruining the game SoE, I hate you.
Good investment if you dont mind wasting money.......2006-02-04
Until SOE can make up there mine on where Galaxies there is little or no point in buying any of the guides unless you dont mind wasting the money. Lets not forget that SOE is supposely coming out with another game later this year. Would be interesting to see how long it takes before that gets screwed up.
Boycott Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts........2005-11-18
I have played Star Wars: Galaxies for 782 days according to the /getvet command. I have purchased all of the expansions out to date. I was considering creating a second account. As of 11-17-05 my account is cancelled. The New Game, also known as the Starter Kit, is the third version of SWG and it is riddled with bugs and incomplete. It is a far inferior product to its previous versions as well. The NG was released after being kept secret for an unknown period of time and allowing players only a two week notice of it being published. Even less time was devoted to it being tested by sources outside of SOE. Trials of Obi Wan and the NG were released in such a manner as to call into question SOE's and LA's ethics. As represented by the employees who post to the forums SOE and LA are uncarring, glib, and/or vastly out of touch with the player community.
Most of these are not new complaints. However, with the release of the NG these problems have escalted to such a degree that the game is no longer playable. While some are content to merely switch games I am not. Simply changing the direction of the flow of money to SOE and LA will not get their attention. I am boycotting all products created by Sony Online Entertainment and Lucas Arts. I encourage others to do the same.
I do not think my actions alone with effect SOE or LA one iota. In fact, I doubt anything will change their policies. The fan base for Star Wars and other properties is sufficiently numerous to mitigate any discontent portion. While some have predicted that the NG will cause the collapse of SWG I believe otherwise. It will lose many current players but those will be replaced by SOE's and LA's new target market. SOE and LA will later use the negative comments and future subscriptions numbers to prove that they were right all along and to dismiss anyone who opposes them as being knee jerk reactionaries who are against change just because they don't like change. Because most likely the next expansion will also bring a new version of SWG as SOE and LA attempt to copy whichever game is doing better then.
guide doesn't apply to the game.......2005-06-09
well....being as they changed the game, the guide no longer applies AT ALL...if you still want to buy one, email me and i'll sell you mine as i sure as heck don't need it anymore...

CU killed SWG.......2005-05-18
SOE ruined SWG with the CU and the subscription numbers don't lie. hopefully some other company will get the franchise in the future and won't make a total mess of it like SOE did.
Useless Guide.......2005-05-11
This guide was useful when the game came out about 2 years ago. The game has changed so much. Its a completely different game now. Very little of the information is useful.
Only get this book if your studing Video Game HISTORY!!!.......2005-05-02
A few months ago I just got SWG JLS along with the "Official Game Guide" from Prima and Its now useless because of the so-called CU or combat upgrade. I want a total refund from Sony for the Guide $19.99 the SWG $29.99 JTS $19.99 and my 60 day pre-paid Game Card 29.99. THIS is not the game I payed for.
It's the only game I know were Healers are not allowed to heal.
This Book Makes a great Paperweight
Was good when game launched (perspective of a gamer).......2004-08-13
This book was wrote when Star Wars Galaxies was in Beta still and even after Beta some things were changed. Profession's have changed such as the Bounty Hunter Profession as in terms of requisites. New items have been added (Especially in the terms of Chef) along with other new schematics (Speeders, Droids, Poison and Disease Resist Packs etc) and then there is the Jedi that are not even mentioned due to the fact that in Beta not one person unlocked the Jedi Profession and the fact the game's in a stage where a slew of revamps are about to be introduced.
If you need a source that can be at your fingertips it may be better now to find a website instead of the book or seek advice from those that have previously tried that profession and made there way through the ranks. My recomendation for the beginner is to NOT buy this book due to the book being dated.
