Book Description
Who was Rita Hayworth? Born Margarita Carmen Cansino, she spent her life subjected to others' definitions of her, no matter how hard she worked to claim her own identity. Although there have been many "revelations" about her life and career, Adrienne McLean's book is the first to show that such disclosures were part of a constructed image from the outset.
McLean explores Hayworth's participation in the creation of her star persona, particularly through her work as a dancera subject ignored by most film scholars. The passive love goddess, as it turns out, had a unique appeal to other women who, like her, found it extraordinarily difficult to negotiate the competing demands of family, domesticity, and professional work outside the home. Being Rita Hayworth also considers the ways in which the actress has been treated by film scholarship over the years to accomplish its own goals, sometimes at her expense. Several of Hayworth's best-known star vehiclesamong them Gilda (1946), Down to Earth (1947), The Lady from Shanghai (1948), and Affair in Trinidad (1952) are discussed in depth.
Customer Reviews:
Exploring the creation of this popular movie star's persona.......2005-01-12
Being Rita Hayworth: Labor, Identity And Hollywood Stardom by Adrienne L. McLean (Assistant Professor of Film Studies, University of Texas-Dallas) strives to answer the question "Who was Rita Hayworth?" Exploring the creation of this popular movie star's persona, beloved in movies such as "The Lady from Shanghai" (1948) and "Affair in Trinidad" (1952), Being Rita Hayworth takes an especial interest in her appeal to other women of the day who were struggling to navigate the demands of family and work outside the home. Careful research of Hayworth's life frames the chapters, which meticulously pick apart fabricated image and propaganda from what can be verified as truth. An excellent read for anyone with an especial interest in not only Hayworth's career, but the ripple effect her star persona had on the hearts and minds of a female generation.

Rita Hayworth: A Photographic TREASURE!!!.......2002-09-27
Rita Hayworth is one of the most beautiful and glamourous women ever to have lived. Though her life was marked by tragedy, particularly her Alzheimer's affliction and death at a relatively young age. This book, however, is mainly devoted to celebrating Rita's happier times. Her life is viewed chronologically in both popular and rare photographs. There are so many beautiful photos that it is difficult to take in all at once! My favorite pictures (and just a sampling of the pictures you will find in this book) are: Rita (when she was still Margarita) with her dark hair dancing in a beautiful ruffled dress (p.28), glamourous Rita smiling brightly while reclining on a couch (p.87), Rita clowning with Orson Welles (pg. 114), Rita getting her hair touched up (p. 119), Rita tickling her daughter Rebecca (p. 126), Rita walking solitarily on the beach (p. 140), Rita being welcomed home (p. 165), and Rita in 1981, in declining mental health, but still looking every inch a movie star. If you love Rita and her movies, do not hesitate to buy this book!!!
Va-Va-Va VOOM! Hubba-hubba! Wowzer-wowzer! Bong!.......2002-05-18
"Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" features a zillion photographs, many never before published, of one of Hollywood's most enduring sexual icons.
The book was a labor of love for author, historian and collector Caren Roberts-Frenzel of Minneapolis, who reportedly kept pestering publishers for years to get their attention.
"But you're wrong, Rita has not been forgotten," was her mantra, as skeptical publishers elsewhere wondered aloud if a market remained for a book about one of the great beauties of the 1940s.
Caren's persistence finally paid off, resulting in one of the most luxurious "picture on every page" books ever produced, supplemented by breezy, well-written and information-packed text.
Unlike "been there, done that" books about Hayworth, this one specializes in numerous "candids," that is, unposed photos taken outside of the studio, at work, at play, on the set, whatever.
For once, here's a volume that doesn't feature the same darn publicity photos you've seen a million times for sale on the Internet or at flea markets.
The deal about Rita is man oh man, unlike sexy sirens named Grable or even Monroe, Hayworth's beauty is timeless and undated. Unless someone told you, you'd never know, for example, that her world famous pinup shot -- taken on the bed by Life Magazine photographer Bob Landry -- was shot more than 60 years ago!
The same holds true for the nearly 300 other photos that grace this book, some recaptured in all of their Technicolor glory.
Get "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective," before it disappears! I understand only a few thousand were printed and yet the reviews in the papers and in places like People Magazine have been terrific.
I fell in love with Rita all over again!.......2002-03-19
Caren Roberts-Frenzel is the president of the Rita Hayworth Fan Club and this book is her dream project come to life. Caren's appreciation of every facet of The Love Goddess is evident on every page. It was so good to see someone who knows and cares about Rita create such a labor of love. Caren doesn't whitewash the blemishes in Rita's often tragic life but rather allows them to complete an honest and ultimately loving portrait of this gentle woman.
Like its subject, this book is breathtaking in its beauty. It contains scores of genuinely rare photos and they are a treasure. I own many books on Rita but "A Photographic Retrospective" is easily my favorite.
Beautiful Photo Tribute to Rita Hayworth!.......2002-01-24
I have collected all the books ever written about Rita Hayworth. I have to say that this is the BEST photobook I have seen to date. Who else but a Rita Hayworth fan can put their heart in such a big project and create such a lovely photo tribute to Hollywood's most glamourous movie star of the classic era. Not only is there a collection of rare photographs, but there is lots of interesting information on Rita's life, trivia and more. If you're a fan of Rita Hayworth, then this is the book you must buy! Simply beautifully done!
Excellent photographs balanced with thorough narration.......2002-01-11
When I picked up this book, I excpected it to have a good amount of photos, many of which I had already seen. But, I was hoping for a few I hadn't and a decent narrations. However, this book blew me away. I have purchased photograph-focused books on celebritites before and been disappointed by their flimsy commentary. This book does an excellent job of conecting the photos to Ms. Hayworth's life. It's not just a collection of pictures, it's a pictorial biography. Admittedly, a traditional bio would get into greater detail, but this book is a great intro to her life. Not everyone wants a tell-all book filled with intimate details. This book delivers impeccably reproduced photos and a satisfactory bio. At first I was a little put-off by the price, but I feel it was well worth it, after reading it. A great read for anyone interested in this arrestingly beautiful and glamourous woman.

Don't waste your money........2006-02-18
Limited general information and sometimes wrong (such as Brigitte's Bardot's "real" name). It mostly consists of listening to the stars' movie trailers which is very uninteresting since they were developed to be shown on screen not radio. Especially silly is listening to Brigitte Bardot's since most of her films shown in the US were dubbed, so you not only are not seeing her but not even hearing her own voice. This is of no value.
Book Description
A beautiful actress, a gifted dancer, a fiery screen temptress linked to some of the most handsome men of her generation, Rita Hayworth seemed to live the life that dreams are made of. But the reality behind the fantasy was a harsh one. Sexually abused by her father as a young girl, Rita constantly searched for a man to save her, marrying five times. At the age of forty-two, Alzheimer's disease began to ravage her mind, cutting short her career at its peak. A haunting and sympathetic tribute to the talented but insecure beauty who was created, and ultimately destroyed, by the movies.

The Private Anguish Of Hollywood's Love Goddess.......2006-06-05
If you ever find yourself wishing that you could live someone else's life, or thinking that celebrities have an ideal existence, read this book biography of Rita Hayworth. Barbara Leaming meticuliously researched the actress's life, from her traumatic childhood as her father's dance partner and incest victim, her mother's alcoholism, her crippling shyness, and her deep insecurities that affected her relationships, her career, and finally, her tragic descent into alcohol abuse and Alzheimer's disease. She was forever after identified with her signature performance in "Gilda", defining an image that would last a lifetime, and from which she was desperate to escape.
Her choice of husbands often reflected the controlling traits of her father,
and her sad estrangment from her late daughter, Rebecca Welles, are just a few parts of this compelling, poignant biography. As this was before abuse was discussed and therapy was made available, Rita hardly could have been expected to live a demon-free life. Her youngest daughter, Princess Yasmin Khan, continues to raise funds and spread awareness for Alzheimer's research. We can only imagine the pain and anguish that Hayworth's loved ones and friends experienced as her mind deteriorated to the point where she did not recognize them. It would have been nice if the book had expanded upon her relationship with her five-time costar, Glenn Ford (who is only twice mentioned), with whom we now know she shared much more than a friendship. This book is a touching tribute to a woman who appeared to live everyone's fantasy life, surrounded by stars, wealth, power, success and public adulation, but in reality lived a nightmare of pain, abuse, low self-esteem and pathos. Peace and love to the lovely Rita.

The tragic life of Hollywood's "Love Goddess".......1999-02-01
Leaming takes a psychological approach to her film star subjects, backed up by key interviews and archival and print documentation. The story of Rita Hayworth, Hollywood's Love Goddess, is poignant and well told. Hayworth was identified with her screen role, Gilda, the fiery, redhaired temptress who drove men wild. In real life, though, as she was supposed to have said, "Men go to bed with Gilda and wake up with me," a sad and ironic commentary on movie-fed fantasy. None of her five marriages lasted long, and she was involved in countless lawsuits with husbands, her studio (Columbia), and ex-husbands. Leaming posits a possible reason for her failures as a lover, wife, and mother, that is, that she may have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father, Eduardo Cansino. Mature-looking beyond her years and a talented dancer, she was her father's dance partner at 12, working to support her family in gambling casinos and other dives south of the border. Leaming backs up her assertions by relating Hayworth's adult behavior to that of incest survivors. She makes a provocative case, but since Hayworth died prematurely of Alzheimer's disease and never spoke on the subject, it has to remain pure--but nonetheless tantalizing--speculation. A fascinating read, and a sad one.

A must-have for all of Rita's fans!.......2004-10-27
This outstanding book is packed with great photos of Rita Hayworth, the "love goddess", from her youth to her later years with its focus on her 59 or so film roles. I had no idea that by 1940 Rita had already appeared in 25 films! My personal favorite Hayworth film is of course, "Gilda", & thankfully 8 pages are devoted to this great classic. This book is highly recommended just for the photos alone, & even though the text was written many years before Rita's death, it doesn't detract any from the book's quality. And for those wanting to get the ultimate book on America's "love goddess", I recommend "Rita Hayworth: A Photographic Retrospective" by Caren Roberts-Frenzel, the founder of the Rita Hayworth Fan Club.

The Amazing World of DC Comics.......2007-05-10
This book goes over the history of DC Comics. It is a "coffee table" type book with lots of colorful pictures. It does a good job of discussing most of the major characters and genres published by DC over the years. Of course, superheroes get more pages than anything else, but they also cover things like romance comics and horror comics. Movie and television adaptations of DC Comics properties are also covered. Very well produced book that should appeal to anyone with an interest in comic books.
Attractive corporate history.......2005-10-05
This is a beautiful coffee table book, thoroughly illustrated and full of much fascinating trivia about comics. When reading it, though, it's important to remember that the book was fully approved and virtually coproduced by DC Comics, and so basically represents DC's PR department view of its history. For example, it mostly rationalizes or dismisses the company's appalling treatment of Superman's creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. For history, there are non-corporate approved books that do a much more realistic job. But for beautiful pictures and an overview of the comics themselves, this is great.
History of comics, cartoons, movies and television versions .......2005-04-07
The best description of the power of Superman as a cultural icon is the answer that former science fiction writer Isaac Asimov gave to the question: "How is it possible that Superman is capable of flying faster than light?" His answer was, "Einstein's theory of relativity is based on theory, while Superman's powers are based on fact." While Asimov's answer is of course presented with tongue in cheek, it does demonstrate the influence Superman has over our lives. He, along with Batman, have been the primary characters in the DC comics group of characters.
However, the DC comics group has featured many different characters over the years, and even the main characters have undergone dramatic changes. This book is a recapitulation of those characters as well as their origins and in some cases their demise and rebirth. Even Superman was once killed by a super villain, an event that made national headlines. Many people considered the death of a hero to be intolerable, yet the issue where Superman was killed sold more than any other issue that was not a premiere issue. Unusual and short-lived characters such as Deadman, the Creeper, and the team of the Hawk and the Dove are mentioned.
If you are serious about comics, then this is a book you must read. The television and movie incarnations of the comic heroes are also included. Until I read this book, I never realized how many different television series and pilots featuring DC super heroes have been created. Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman have all been the star of one or more television series. While some never progressed beyond the pilot stage, others are timeless. Even though the special effects are weak when compared to what can now be done, the strength of the characters still makes the Superman series starring George Reeves well worth watching
Great introduction to the world of DC Comics........2003-08-31
Buyers beware, apparently this is an updated edition of Les Daniels' earlier book, so don't fork out the money if you already own the earlier book, unless you think 16 pages of new material is worth the price. Otherwise, this is an excellent introduction to the world of DC Comics. It summarises the history of most of the major DC characters, from their humble origins to their glory days and beyond. Much more so than Marvel characters, DC characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Justice League have, over the last half century or so, worked their way into the very cultural fabric and the psyche of the American public. With the advent of globalisation, their influence now extends well beyond the shores of America into the wider world - just show anyone in Australia, which is on the opposite side of the globe, a picture of Lynda Carter in her star-spangled costume, and they can tell you that she is Wonder Woman. A great reference for all comic book lovers, especially fans of DC characters.
New Title,New Cover,Same Book.......2003-07-13
Although the content still rates 5 Stars this edition has been deceptivly marketed and doesn't.This is essentially a reprint of DC Comics :60 Years from 1995. Ok it's an updated edition with 16 additional pages but that's only printed on the back cover. If you liked Les Daniels work on the first book you can easily be suckered into buying this edition online thinking it's a new book. It's not!

Book Description
This is the first book in the Selecta, the collected works of Benoit Mandelbrot. This volume incorporates his original contributions to finance and is a major contribution to the understanding of how speculative prices vary in time. The chapters consist of much new material prepared for this volume, as well as reprints of his classic papers. Much of this work helps to lay a foundation for evaluating risks in trading strategies.
Statistical Papers, 2000: "... this is a most useful collection of Mandelbrot's work economics, it provides an excellent starting point for anybody interested in the origin of many current topics in empirical finance or the distribution of income."
Customer Reviews:
A clear warning to all those financial analysts using N(0,1).......2004-10-14
This book deserves to receive 6 stars.Mandelbrot serves up overwhelming empirical, statistical, and historical evidence that financial decision makers are dead wrong in assuming, contrary to the available evidence, that a normal probability distribution describes the outcomes accurately in financial markets .In fact, the Cauchy distribution is substantially more relevant than the normal distribution.Mandelbrot's work simply means that the standard theoretical models taught in all colleges and universities, the CAPITAL ASSET PRICING MODEL(CAPM) and the BLACK-SCHOLES equation, give correct answers if and only if the relevant probability distributions about the movement of prices in financial markets over time are all normal. However, the evidence shows that they are NOT normal.Mandelbrot confirms ,by massive data analysis, Keynes's original 1921 objections to the misuse in application of (by merely assuming the applicability of such a distribution without examining the actual data)the normal probability distribution made in chapters 29 and 30 of the A Treatise on Probability(1921).Unfortunately,it appears that little,if any ,of Mandelbrot's scientific approach and analysis is being integrated into economics and finance.
scientific way of evaluating price movement.......2001-08-30
in this book, Mandelbrot is trying to prove that first, the price movement's distribution is scaling invariant, meaning a security's log price-change's distribution is same as with its 5-min's or with its daily's(or even monthly); second, price movement is not purely random/normaldistribution/brownian/random walk on street(they are all same description), meaning if u use normal distribution as one of ur bases for ur model, u will not only be theoretically wrong, but also be punished in real-life trading, such as the case of long-term capital. third, price movement does have cycle, but it length can not be determined in trading time, meaning u will not be able to decide when those cycles are going to start or end; fourth, changes of price movements do concentrate, meaning big moves will happen continouesly, or very closely to each other. the major implication to me is that many current financial theories are wrong, specially, those using normal distribution(such as option model) as basic assumption for security price movement. it also may prove that some of current price-based models(such as some trend following system) have some merit. but manay systems based on channel(such as bollinger bands)will not work in long-run. with those in mind and many available mathematical tools, one should be able to build a good financial model.
A book to make you think differently about the markets.......2000-05-07
To read this book you need truly to understand math and the markets. There is no questions that Mandelbrot is one of the greatest figures of our time. What he claimed based on his studies on cotton trading in the early 60s might not be close to the reality of today, but the way he approached it makes you think twice about the markets. Cotton trading is so different from stock market trading because it is either spoting trading or futures trading, and it is based on margins. The market usually has poor liquidity and with few players in it. The conclusions the book made could poorly extend to the general markets. The hard-to-follow math notations kept distracting me from following the main subjects. Anyway, this book will teach you something new, but you have to understand math and the markets, deeply.

Description:
The scaling properties encompass in a simple analysis many of the volatility characteristics of financial markets. That is why we use them to probe the different degree of markets development. We empirically study the scaling properties of daily Foreign Exchange rates, Stock Market indices and fixed income instruments by using the generalized Hurst approach. We show that the scaling exponents are associated with characteristics of the specific markets and can be used to differentiate markets in their stage of development. The robustness of the results is tested by both Monte Carlo studies and a computation of the scaling in the frequency domain.
