      Book Description

"As lame as school dances can be, there's always that one moment." Dawson's Creek

"It was a crazy night because many of us did things we never expected. Some of us got drunk for the first time and others lost their virginity, like me. I look back on it and remember how special it was...." Prom Attendee

"Don't let prom put you in a panic! With one month to go, you've still got tons of time to get perfect skin, beautiful hair and a hot bod. Just follow our head-to-toe guide to getting gorgeous." -- Young Miss Special Prom magazine

The date, the gown, the tux, the theme, the corsage. Everyone remembers the prom. For many teenagers the prom is the highlight of their high school career, seen as a rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood. For Amy Best, the prom presents an ideal forum to explore teen identity and to show how this seemingly trivial event speaks volumes about the world of today's kids.
Today's proms have gone upscale; no longer held in the high school gym, many schools hold their proms at luxury hotels, complete with full banquet facilities and professional entertainment. Students arrive in limousines, dance the night away in rented tuxes and skin-tight sheaths then leave for a weekend of unsupervised activities with friends--for many their first extended trip without parents. Amy Best interviews countless teens about their prom experiences, and she looks at popular media to understand today's teens. She finds that with the rising purchasing power of youth culture, the prom is now an industry unto itself with its own magazines, films, clothing, accessories and services.
Best shows us that, while the prom is often trivialized, most kids take the prom seriously. The prom is a space where kids work through their understanding of authority, social class, gender norms and multicultural schooling. Proms are often the sight of public and personal struggle, especially for gay teens and inter-racial couples, who are often excluded from the prom. Many kids don't go totheir prom or, as with gay teens, have begun organizing "alternative proms."
Proms are more than just pictures and puffed sleeves--they are a mythic part of youth culture and, for better or worse, will always be a night to remember.

4 out of 5 stars Prom Night meets Senior Thesis.......2001-08-12

Don't let the pink retro cover fool you ... a bookworm in a frilly ballgown is still, well, a bookworm. Not a judgement on author Amy Best, but the ingenuity in the concept and research behind this book is really not dealt justice by the pedantic writing.

Having noticed the way the proms have taken on a life of their own since the ten or so years since I last donned a poufy pink dress, I was very eager to see what an academic study of this phenomenon. However, reading this book, I often found my fingers searching for the hard plastic comb binding often used on graduate school papers. Granted, the material in Prom Night likely did come from Best's doctoral research, but some cheekier writing is called for to keep lowly Bachelor's Degree holders like myself from being reminded of why we jumped into the commercial, instead of academic world.

5 out of 5 stars A provocative and insightful analysis of the prom.......2000-10-14

This is an excellent book -- theoretically sophisticated but eminently readable. It takes the prom seriously as an event which is meaningful to kids and explores the way that the prom operates simultaneously as a site of social control and as an opportunity for resistance. On the former point, the author examines the way that the prom experience is mediated for kids by schools, parents, the market and popular culture in ways which reproduce and reinforce inequalities based on class, race, gender and sexuality. Further, she highlights the way that kids themselves participate in reproducing these inequalities. But she also looks to ways that kids resist all of the above, for example, through overt protest against non-inclusive proms (ie. boycott of a prom where interracial dating was prohibited), through the organization of alternate events (such as gay proms), or through symbolic acts of resistance by those who do attend (ie. girls in tuxedos). The author's analysis is particularly powerful because it is infused with respect for the kids who are the subjects of her study.

5 out of 5 stars Grams and Grandpa loved it! .......2005-04-16

My mom bought me chicken soup for the kids, preteen and preteen 2's soul. I fell in love with the series. Well, my Grams and Grandpa's anniversery was coming up so I thought a rose bouquet, a card, and a chicken soup book would be perfect. I looked for a chicken soup book that would be for 60+ people and I found this! It's just great. But one thing thats not true: Anyone can read this and enjoy it! I am just a kid and I liked it. My grandparents definetly liked it. I recommend this book for everybody!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all(even 25 year olds)!!!.......2003-06-03

I originally bought this book for some older friends of mine. I ended up reading it all the way through before giving it to them. The stories touched all of my emotions and reminded me of my wonderful grandparents as well(my grandparents raised my sisters and I thru much of our childhood). This is a great book for anyone and everyone-don't pass it up.

      5 out of 5 stars They've done it again.......2000-12-05

Readers who haven't received a recent dose of "Chicken Soup for the Soul," shame on you. In "Chicken Soup for the Golden Soul," Mark Victor Hansen, Jack Canfield, Barbara Chesser, Amy Seeger and Paul Meyer present us with one of the best of the series.

I say it is a must-read for anyone on either side of 60. It is a timeless, energized, enthusiastic, motivational book written with golden years in mind, but filled with stories all can enjoy. Will be a great holiday gift for lots of folks on your list.

                    5 out of 5 stars Worth Getting.......2007-05-13

I found myself suddenly needing to use Access for analysis that was way too big to do in Excel (comparing data sets from 3 sources with ~800K records each). I really knew nothing about Access. Between this book and the internet I have become very proficient in Access. I practically slept with the book for a week. I now find I don't need it and have lent it to a co-worker.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for filling in the blanks.......2007-05-13

I've had limited exposure to Access before reading this book, and I found it fantastic for filling in the blanks in my knowledge. Access is complicated enough that, for true beginners, it would probably be more helpful to get a book that comes with a CD of examples and walk-throughs. But if you have a handle on the basics, I'd highly recommend this book.

                    1 out of 5 stars Mostly Worthless.......2007-04-25

Most of the examples and/or instructions do not work correctly when applied to an actual database.

3 out of 5 stars ACCESS Dummies book is good..........2007-02-21

I am pretty good with computers and figuring out new software. This book had decent basic explanations of the functions & tools, but I had to review the book several times to figure out how to link Tables, and I still couldn't figure it out. I looked on Microsoft.com/Access at their Access database Templates to see how tables are linked together (see the Contact Management Database - its fantastic !) and had to look at each individual table & form to figure out how tables relate to each other in order for them to be linked... and I still couldn't quite figure it out.

The disappointing part about the book is that in order for ACCESS to really work for you, you need to understand how to link tables and the book was just not that helpful in that area.

I'm glad I have the book, however, it does help with many other basic things, but I would imagine you'd have to get someone to sit down and show you how to link tables in order for you to grasp the concept of it. To me, its like 3-dimensional thinking - and that's a bit too mind numbing for me to figure out on my own.

This book is very introductory. If you need more than the basics I wouldn't suggest this book.

This is a great book it has helped me with many of my access questions.

                    2 out of 5 stars 200 pages too long.......2006-10-23

Some useful information, but one must wade through endless lame jokes, cutesy asides and unwarranted insults (nerd, geek, technoweenie etc.) about the brilliant people who designed the software. It seems to revel in a pride of ignorance - way wrong for an educational book.

4 out of 5 stars Good starter book.......2006-07-28

We had already begun to create the database so much of the book was not necessarily helpful. But there were many tips and hints that helped us improve on the database. I would reccomend this book especially for those who have never opened Access before and for those want to tweak and improve their current database to be more user-friendly or professional looking.
