Book Description
The Moving Picture World magazine was the industry standard during the silent cinema era. This is the first index compiled for all the films reviewed in the early volumes of this journal. In 1916, the magazine itself began providing an index to film reviews. Until now, researchers and scholars had to scour page-by-page through each weekly issue from 1907-1915 to find a desired review. This new index, focusing on this period, lists films alphabetically by title, identifies manufacturers/distributors with their films, and provides full dates and page locations for reviews. The index provides easy access to reviews of theatrical films, news pictorials, series and serials, and early travelogues. Many of the films included in this index are no longer extant; thus, contemporary reviews may be the only means for analysis of these pioneering cinematic efforts. The reviews contain valuable information about the standards and tastes of film in its infancy, and shed light on story content in those early days. Some of the titles in this index will shock the user; many will cause laughter; all are worthy of remembrance for their historical value. Over 27,000 films are listed; the preface chronicles the history of the journal and explains clearly how to use the book. No reviews are included--the index is designed to encourage and guide the user towards an increased familiarity with the Moving Picture World, which is currently available on microfilm through the Library of Congress
Book Description
New York Puerto Ricans have been an integral part of hip hop culture since the beginning: from 1970s pioneers like Rock Steady Crew's Jo-Jo, to recent rap megastars like Big Punisher and Angie Martinez. Yet, their contributions to hip hop are down-played, if not completely ignored. When their presence is ac-knowl-edged, it is often misinterpreted as a defection from Puerto Rican culture and an identity with the African American camp. But nothing could be further from the truth. Through hip hop, Puerto Ricans have simply stretched the boundaries of Puerto Ricanness and 'Latinidad.' In this unprecedented study, Rivera argues that Puerto Ricans share more commonalities with black Americans than with other 'Latinos' in terms of cultural history and artistic expression. Using hip hop culture as the focus, Rivera illustrates the shared New York City history and experience of these two groups in groundbreaking and engaging ways.
Customer Reviews:
A Must-Read for Latino Studies or Hip Hop fans.......2005-04-15
I really enjoyed this book. As a Latino who from the Northeast who is now in his mid-20s, I remember the breakdancing craze and many of the hip hop artists Rivera writes about, who were big during my childhood.
One of the book's strengths is Rivera's attention to social and historical conditions that led to cultural production and social solidarity between Blacks and Puerto Ricans in New York City. As a non-Puerto Rican Latino, I've long been fascinated by the high degree of solidarity and unity between Blacks and Ricans, and Rivera's research shed much light on this topic.
Fortunately, I had the chance to meet Rivera shortly after reading this boook when she attended a seminar on Latino influence in hip hop in Philadelphia. She's a good author and a great person. Read this book, if you have an interest in either Latino Studies or hip hop's old school days.
New York Ricans from the Hip Hop Zone.......2005-04-11
New York Ricans from the Hip Hop Zone is the first book to explore the Puerto Rican dimension of hip-hop. This volume explores the history of hip-hop music from the standpoint of the New York Puerto Rican community, which has been instrumental in its development.
New York Puerto Ricans have been an integral part of hip hop culture since the very beginning: from 1970s pioneers like Rock Steady Crew's Jo-Jo, to recent rap mega-stars Big Punisher and Angie Martinez. Yet, Puerto Rican participation and contributions to hip hop is frequently downplayed, if not completely ignored. When their presence has been acknowledged, it is usually misinterpreted as a defection from Puerto Rican culture and identity into the African American camp. But, Rivera argues nothing could be further from the truth. Through hip-hop, Puerto Ricans have simply stretched the boundaries of Puerto Ricanness and latinidad.
New York Ricans from the Hip Hop Zone breaks with the common assumption that, in terms of cultural history and artistic expression, Puerto Ricans share more with "Latinos" than with black communities. Using hip hop culture as a focal point, Rivera draws parallels-past and present-between African Americans and Puerto Ricans by highlighting their shared New York City history and their both being part of the African Diaspora in the Americas

Read this book..........2003-12-04
finally theres a book out there that latinos of all cultures can relate to, and luckily for myself, Raquel Z. Rivera, was my professor for my Puerto Rican Culture class, and to be able to read her book and hear her story was learning experience i am very grateful for. read this book and you will learn much more than just about hip hop, you learn about struggle and identity, and how being puerto rican goes so much more further than what people assume.
Book Description
Logic + strategy = mind-bending, brain-building fun! These 40-plus games and variations may seem simple at first, but don't be fooled. Every one's a huge, enjoyable challenge. And unlike some puzzles, which are good for one go and then gone once solved, many of these can be played over and over again. So, get out a good, sharp pencil and join the fun. Go beyond tic-tac-toe, through mazes in a Franco-Prussian Labyrinth and into battle with Mine Field. Basic graph paper becomes a game board in Black Box, Mastermind, and Quo Vadis. Try a Word Hunt, where the players search for all the four-letter (or larger) words they can find in a chosen phrase. Helpful illustrations and some background on each puzzle's origins start you off, and a table in the back includes the number of players, type of paper needed, and difficulty level.

only so-so.......2002-09-23
While this book does have some decent puzzles, I was overall somewhat disappointed. I found that many of the puzzles were not puzzling at all, the first thing I thought of was the correct answer or near to it.
I have not gone through all of the book yet, but so far I would not reccomend this to someone who wanted truly "mind-sharpening" and challenging puzzles.
stimulating.......2000-06-05
A solid book if you want to build the mind.
Intellectually stimulating.......1998-07-10
The puzzles in this book truly are mind-sharpening. I enjoyed this book & others by this author because it makes you look at life from a different perspective. The illustrations show a dry sense of humor that I enjoy.
Mediocre.......1997-11-20
Harshman's book is more for the logical and scientific type. A big disappointment after going through wonderful puzzles from the book by Sloane

Book Description
All you need is a pencil (and an eraser) to enjoy the twists and tricks, the dead ends and sudden "aha!" experiences, that are yours when you try a pixel puzzle. Start with the puzzles that are merely hard to solve, like the baseball player, the ambulance, and the Liberty Bell. Then go on to the harder ones, like the wedding cake, the elephant, and the trumpeter. Soon you'll be ready to take on the hungry shark, the picture of James Dean, and the astronaut--104 collectible designs in all!
Customer Reviews:
Great.......2005-05-11
This is my first time using pixel puzzles, and they are so much fun. My teacher explained to me how to do them, but I'm confused as to why there a re so many numbers on the sides and top. Please explain!
excellent time killer.......2004-12-27
This book is my first experience with pixel puzzles and I have to say that they've been challenging, interesting and totally addictive. The book gives a good foreword for beginners, giving some tips to start you on the way to solving the puzzles correctly and then throws you around a hundred puzzles with varying levels of difficulty for you to work through. Some are pretty difficult but all are manageable and satisfying at the end. This is definitely a good way to spend a few hours on a rainy (or snowy as it might be here in Canada) day or in spare moments of boredom. Definitely a good way to keep the mind sharp and keen. Anyone itching to exercise their problem-solving arm will appreciate this book.
The best of the bunch.......2003-05-01
Pixel puzzles are fun, addictive and very challenging. They are are considered math puzzles, but as long as you can count, you'll be fine. They don't require any reading, so they're great to do while you're listening to TV or a book on tape. Nonetheless, they really work your brain. They require a logical, step-by-step approach, and are very satisfying. If you like logic problems of any type, you should definitely give these a try!
I am a true addict. I have tried every book I could find with this type of puzzle. Mind sharpening Pixel Puzzles, and Perplexing Pixel Puzzles are clearly the best. They are much more challenging than any of the other puzzle books of this type, and the pictures are more interesting. I bought them two years ago, and I was hooked. After I finished them, I tried others, but nothing else can really compare. I just ordered my second copy of each of them!
If you're generally good with challenging logic puzzles, you will love this book, and it will keep you busy for months. Most of the puzzles took a long time to complete. Some were very frustrating because they required using trial and error (in addition to logic) and a lot of erasing. They were all fun though, and it was satisfying to complete each one.
If you prefer shorter, quicker puzzles, then I would recommend Art Puzzles by Number by Kathy Weaver. The Games Magazine Paint by Numbers book is good for beginners. The puzzles in the Nonograms book by Non Ishida are good, but the book is very small and the paper quality is very poor. I kept poking my pencil through the paper, and it was hard to keep the book open to the right page.
Mind sharpening Pixel Puzzles, and Perplexing Pixel Puzzles are the only ones I've seen that are spiral bound (which really helps). The pages are larger, the paper quality is excellent, and the resulting pictures are attractive. They cost less than many of the other books too! How can you beat that?
Great puzzles.......2003-02-01
I love these puzzles! I just wish they would get around to producing another book of them, as I've finished all of these... some of them more than once!. The book is well put together (the spiral binding is a good idea, as it makes each page lie flat). The paper is of good enough quality to withstand erasing (and you WILL need to erase now and then). But now that I've worked my way through the book, I have to wait for new ones to come out in Games Magazine...
great puzzle book! pixel puzzles are for logical minds!fun!.......2001-08-15
great puzzle book for someone with a logical mind. Completely different from those boring word puzzles!! This is a book for a math mind....although it's strictly logic here! It's perfect for a computer programmer..or someone who thinks like one! Great introduction in the book explaining what a pixel puzzle is and how to solve it. Basically, a pixel puzzle is a grid that has numbers along the top and left side. You have to figure out which squares should be colored in and which should be left blank. By filling in the squares you create a picture. The book has over 100 puzzles. There are about 10 easy ones that take 10 minutes - 1 hour. The rest take several hours or several days (depending on your aptitude!). It's fun and challenging. Not boring at all! I'm so happy to find something fun that actually exersices my BRAIN! It's fun..give it a shot!

WINDOWS SVR 2003 RESOURCE KIT
Customer Reviews:
Not casual reading but good.......2005-10-18
This could never be called a casual read, but it is a good read. I've spent much time in the Group Policy book, pair that book with Stanek's Windows Server 2003 Inside Out and you have everything you need to master Active Directory and Windows. Recommended.
A must Have in our Bookshelf.......2005-09-04
I've been studying to MCSA 2003. The tools and the explanations provided are easy to understand and are helping me in my certification for MCSA and maintaining my network at work, too. I'm very glad to have this books in my bookshelf.
A Critical Resource.......2005-09-02
This set provides the "missing" instruction book for Server 2003. It is full of helps, hints, and workarounds, written by experts. I cannot imagine trying to maintain a Server 2003 network of any size without these books on your shelf.
Good but not for the novice.......2005-08-22
I am learning about Windows Server for the first time and bought this set as a comprehensive guide. It is not for the novice or the faint hearted. It is tough to follow and goes in to great depth at times. The books are uneven in standard with some just taking you through the wizards and others assuming you can program. Useful to have but requires a lot of effort from the reader. You will need to work hard at it.

Customer Reviews:
Good reference for any Windows administrator or planner.......2006-03-24
The 2003 performance guide was probably one book that's worth the price of this entire package. Mark Friedman, the author of Windows 2000 Performance Guide, wrote this book for resource kit. That explained why he never published a follow-up of his famous 2000 performance book. The other books in the kit were also extremely helpful. This is THE set of reference book to get for authoritative Windows 2003 information. Also included is a disc with all the ebook versions of everything, including some bonus books not in the resource kit. So stop Googling for unreliable second hand information, and get your stingy boss to cough up the money for this must have tool.
7 Individual Books ++.......2005-07-21
This bundled set of books contains just about everything it is possible to know about Windows Server 2003. Well, maybe not everything, but everything you can include in four thousand six hundred and fifty pages, yes, 4650 pages.
In one slipcase, there are eight separate Microsoft manuals:
Windows Internals (4th Edition)
Windows Group Policy guide
Windows Security Resource Kit (2nd Edition)
Windows Server 2003 Performance Guide
Windows Server 2003 Troubleshooting Guide
Windows Registry Guide (2nd Edition)
Windows Administrator's Automation Toolkit
Windows Server 2003 Tools and Digital Resources (on CD)
The CD contains more material than the rest of the books put together including (guaranteed to be true as it contains all of the manuals just listed in eBook form),
More than 300 esential tools and utilities,
And collections of Technical References on:
Active Director
Core Operating System
Group Policy
High Availability and Scalability
Networking Collection
Storage Technologies
Windows Security
It would be pointless to talk about the contents of each book here as they are already described under their individual titles. What you get in the bundle is: lower price than when purchased individually, extra material on the CD, and a cardboard slipcase to keep them in.

Mark Minasi has an unusual ability to make dry material interesting and this book set is no exception. I primarily use the 2003 Server book, and he uses a lot of illustrations to ensure you're on the same page as he is. I would recommend this product.
