Book Description
Tight deadlines and tighter budgets define digital video production today--a fact Adobe has acknowledged and responded to with its completely revamped Windows XP-only Premiere Pro video editing software. By focusing on a single (non-Mac) version of Premiere, Adobe has been able to deliver a product that raises the bar for desktop digital video editing; this approachable, complete volume gets readers beyond the basics. Offering in-depth explanations guaranteed to make the knowledge stick (and in an easygoing style that makes the book fun to read), filmmaker and Premiere whiz
Jacob Rosenberg focuses on the concepts, features, and techniques that are key to mastering Adobe Premiere Pro. If you're a novice user, you'll get the grounding you need to begin capturing, editing, and outputting digital video. And if you're a Premiere veteran, you can go straight to the comprehensive coverage of all that's new: three-point color correction, multiple timelines, a new audio mixer, enhanced media management, and more. The accompanying DVD includes project files, sample footage, Third Party Plug-ins and an hour of video tutorials that help articulate concepts and features that are better suited for video explanations than on a page.
"Jacob's skills and enthusiasm as an editor have been an invaluable resource to the product team throughout the development lifecycle of Premiere Pro. It is no understatement to say that he has been instrumental in charting the course of this application. His knowledge is seemingly without limit, as can be attested to by anyone who has watched him present his master classes at various tradeshows across the globe. I can think of no one better as a guide through the intricacies and depths of Premiere Pro 1.5--the best version of Premiere to date."--Richard Townhill, Group Product Manager, Adobe Video Products
Customer Reviews:
Great Learning tool.......2007-03-14
This book is fabulous for just learning how to operate Adobe Premiere.
Best Ever User Manual.......2006-07-16
Whether its the basics you seek or the advanced "insider" tips you need, this is the manual for you. Although Premiere Pro is much different than 6.5 and previous versions, you will soon find that using it will become second nature. This is the best book for Pro users on the market.
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 Studio Techniques (Studio Techniques).......2006-07-04
Three stars for "user friendly" and five stars for content. The information is quite detailed but needs a lot of interpretation and rereading to understand. The text doesn't always follow your project and one needs to go to the "Help" menu, often. However, if one preservers, the instructions will allow you to use the Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 program to its fullest potential.
now out of date.......2006-03-26
great book but now behind the times, wish i'd of waited a bit longer till the release of 2.0 and the subsequent book; however, I believe everything covered in this book carries over to the new version of premiere pro.
Somewhat advanced.......2006-03-18
Hello folks-
My level before i bought this book was:
1. very familiar with roxio easy movie creation 7.5
2. somewhat familiar with adobe premier pro 1.5
FIRST-
I WANT TO EXCLAIM THE WONDERFUL TREATMENT I GOT FROM AMAZON. I PAID $14.00 FOR 1 DAY SHIPPING. IT TOOK 2 DAYS. I EMAILED AMAZON AND THEY REFUNDED THE ENTIRE SHIPPING AT NO CHARGE, AT NO QUESTIONS ASKED. AT NO QUIBBLING. THEY MADE ME FEEL LIKE A PHAROAH! THANK YOU AMAZON.
I found the book an excellent deal, but somewhat on the advanced side. I feel the author gave an honest intelligent effort, but id have preferred a little more attention to the basics. I would highly recommend this book to the intermediate (at least) Adobe Premier 1.5 programmer.
I WILL ABSOLUTELY ORDER FROM AMAZON AGAIN.
And no- this is no schill.

Book Description
You undoubtedly know what a paperclip is and how to use it, but did you know that during the Second World War the people of Norway adopted paperclips as a symbol of protest against the occupying Nazis?
Really Useful tells these and other stories of how the things we use every day came into being.
As much a sociological history as a compendium of entertaining stories,
Really Useful takes you on a tour from the kitchen to the bathroom to the office and beyond. Along the way it tells us about the technology, design, social conditions and even intrigue that contributed to these remarkable innovations, which include:
sliced bread, microwave oven, coffee, tea bags, corkscrew and Teflon
razor blades, Band-Aids, the toothbrush, lipstick and tissues
air conditioning, buttons, vacuum cleaners, stockings and neon lights
Post-It notes, the floppy disk, smoke detectors, fireworks and the battery
barcodes, traffic lights, parking meters, padlocks
We sometimes curse these things as just so much clutter but in fact they form the fabric of our daily lives and we'd be lost without them. The stories of their origins are as interesting and illuminating as these objects are truly useful.

Not very pleased.......2004-03-24
I have purchased many books about the extroardinary things and origins of things in everyday life. I thought this book was very boring, and not very interesting. This is comparing this book to others in the same category like "What Makes Flamingos Pink" and "Extroardinary Origins of Everyday Things". Purchase those two books first, then if you still desire more information, maybe think about purchasing this book.
Your rooms are like Museums.......2003-04-21
...Author Joel Levy's appealing and informative book entitled Really Useful The Origins Of Everyday Things will provide you with the information to continue your conversation. According to Levy "your house is a kind of museum. In every room, on every surface, are the exhibits: everyday things that you take for granted, but each of which has its own story. "The book is a superb endeavour that leads the reader from room to room pointing out the origins and components of such items as deodorant, toothpaste, shaving cream, eyeglasses, razor blades, Tupperware, plastic band aids, tea bags, instant coffee, tooth brushes, mirrors, showers, plugs and switches, toilets and toilet paper and many more that we presume have always existed. For example, did you know, as the book mentions, "cave paintings and archaeological finds show that prehistoric man was shaving at least as far back as 30, 000 BC. Stone-age cultures used sharp-edged flints, shells, shark's teeth, or volcanic obsidian glass, implements that were still in use under medieval Aztecs and other Stone-Age cultures right up to the 20th century. "Perhaps you were not aware that toilet paper dates back to the sixth-century China, but in most parts of the world was a rare commodity until the 17th and 18th century. Levy also takes us outside the home and tells us about some of the toys we play with, such as the Frisbee. You probably are not aware that the modern recreation of tossing the Frisbee all started at Harvard and Yale in the 1940s. Apparently students attending these Universities amused themselves by throwing around shallow tin pie-pans from the William R. Frisbie bakery of Bridgeport, Connecticut. A gentleman by the name of Walter Frederick Morrison, who was inspired by flying saucers, created his own flying disks and sold his patent to a company called Wham-O Manufacturing. Initially the toy was called "flying saucers." The president of the company, Richard Kerr, decided to name the disks Frisbee after he visited the campuses of Harvard and Yale. We all know how successful the toy became. These are a sampling of the more than the 100 objects and "goodies" Levy writes about in a book that will surely interest young and old. In fact, for most readers, it will probably be a book to slowly digest during the course of several readings. After all, you do want to be able to remember many of the tidbits.
fascinating facts.......2003-02-12
As coffee table books go, this is one of the best to have come out in a long time. Obviously very well researched, and full of fascinating information, I was very pleased when someone gave this to me recently. Oh, and the photos are excellent too.

Perfect.......2007-08-29
This is the second Albert's book I have, and I have only good words to say about it (again).
This opening book is close to perfection.
It made me choose this opening simply because of this great book.
He explains the opening very well, not just lines (and in fact the lines are the last chapters of the book), but mainly ideas.
He shows why before the how (or like he says - he teach you how to fish instead of giving you fish).
Lots of diagrams so you can handle without a board.
Lots of new lines (novelty).
Lots of games both for black and white.
I switched to it as a response to e4 (used to play accelerated Sicilian dragon), and even thought it is not easy line, and I did encountered some unpleasant position in my first games, once you get to know it, it is quite good.
highly recommended for anyone who is not master of the pirc.
Detailed coverage but lacks "good book" value........2007-08-10
This is probably a very good book. I have tried on many occasions to learn more about the Pirc by studying this book. It has great ideas. I just thought it was very verbose and lacked instructional value. I gave it three stars for the potential is has. I will use my Botterill book instead.
A model of not maintained promises.......2007-06-15
This book could be considered, in my opinion, as a model sample of non maintained promises.
The first half of the book is absolutely amazing: it starts with a lot of promises (like it or not, this is what every chess player wants from a chess book: the illusion to improve both his play and rating after reading it); then comes a section full of excellent explanation, which brings the reader to the third and final part in a very good mood: "ok, I undestood everything, now let's go to the theory and crush every white guy who dares to play 1. e4 ... with my Pirc letal weapon".
But now comes the bad news: the analytical part is completely disappointing. First of all, the repertoire is the same tired choices that other authors propose: against the Classical, the most boring middlegame positions I've never seen in my life; against the Austrian, the same, usual, Seirawan lines that, with best play by black, leads to a forced perpetual. To be honest, I'm really tired of this stuff: only to demonstrate theoretical equality, those authors ask me to play this kind of chess.
I rate this book 3 start because of the first part (which is really excellent) otherwise I'd given it 1 star.
Pirc Alert.......2007-06-08
I'm NC player. I find this book very interesting and useful. The explanations are very clear and the authors provide the Pirc's ideas and not rote memorization moves only
A trustworthy defense for Black.......2006-03-13
This book is a honest work made by a true connoisseur.

Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming is a tutorial. It's meant for programmers who already know an object-oriented language and want to apply their knowledge in the standardized environment provided by the Microsoft .NET Framework. The book, written by Jeffrey Richter, a programmer and the .NET columnist at Microsoft's magazine for its developer community, takes a more or less language-agnostic approach to the run-time environment (though many illustrative examples are in C#). It aims to untangle the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and some of the Framework Class Library (FCL), and generally succeeds, particularly at the former. Richter shares his knowledge of the key classes you can instantiate in the CLR, and the kinds of operations you can perform on and with them.
You can read this book, or individual chapters, from beginning to end. You'll probably find it more helpful, though, if you read individual sections as you encounter problems or develop an interest in specific aspects of the CLR (ideal for those middle-of-the-night "I wonder how it does..." questions). Richter typically lets his code do most of the talking, and he'll often introduce a section with a prose summary of the CLR way of doing something (sometimes with a supplementary diagram) before unleashing a string of quick examples that illustrate variations on the theme. In an unusual and helpful tutorial move, he makes heavy use of the ILDASM utility to show what goes on at compile time. --David Wall
Topics covered: How the Microsoft .NET Framework--in other words, the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and parts of the Framework Class Library (FCL)--runs Microsoft .NET applications, and how to write software for the framework. Shared assemblies, characteristics of CLR types (including their properties, methods, fields, and events), and object orientation all get ample coverage. There's particularly detailed information on text manipulation (including internationalization and localization), arrays, custom interfaces, and the managed environment (garbage collection) in the CLR environment.
Customer Reviews:
Best general CLR book out there.......2006-04-04
This is the best book I could find on Common Language Runtime (CLR) programming concepts. Richter really goes into detail on garbage collection, boxing model, and other important "under the covers" topics/gotchas. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about the CLR.
What more could you want.......2006-03-24
If you are a beginner in .NET ( not to be confused with a beginner programmer ) this book is excellent. Unfortunately for me, I have been using .NET for several years. SO there we're only pieces here and there that I could use. But, he goes into extreme detail on every aspect for .NET. I love the book.
Its a must for at least a reference book. At the very least.
And by the way I dont do practice examples, I make my own. So if there are examples I have no idea if they work or not. And a books weight has nothing to do with some examples that the author thought up, while cashing his check!
Nick
Best CLR/FCL Internals Coverage.......2006-03-13
If you want to understand fundamental topics like boxing, unboxing, or disposing better or understand what is really happening when an event gets raised, this is the best book you will find. Richter's knowledge is impeccable, and his writing style is clear. If an experienced developer wants to understand the inner-workings of the .NET framework, this is the first book he/she should read.
Must read for .Net developer.......2006-01-16
Excellent book.Anybody who wants to understand the underlying concepts of .Net must read this book.
The Definitive Book for Deep .NET Knowledge.......2005-10-25
This is not the kind of book where you will immediately be copying code and being instructed to follow basic instructions to achieve a task. Rather this is a deeply rich book on the internals of the .NET architecture. I consider it required reading for anyone serious about moving towards .NET Mastery. Is it completely comprehensive? No. There are areas missing. Are these areas covered extensively in books that are more 'follow the instructions' type, absolutely.
I would add Juval Lowy's new book (2nd edition) to this, and you will know more then most in my experience. For more book recommendations see my 'so you want to' list under 'Damon Carr'.

Book Description
This book by two popular developer/writers takes advanced developers and software designers who use Visual Basic under the covers of the Microsoft .NET Platform to provide an in-depth understanding of its structure, function, and operational components. Developers get an in-depth understanding of the technology's structure and function so they can make informed application design choices. They also get expert advice on application design and performance optimization issues. This book details the .NET infrastructure and architecture, then shows its practical implications with tons of sample code written in Visual Basic .NET.
Customer Reviews:
Great for CLR internals/patterns.......2006-09-10
The title is misleading, but the material is wonderful. (This book was originally published in C#, and the 2.0 edition of this book is titled CLR via C#.) If you already have a working knowledge of VB.Net 1.0/1.1 and want to gain a deeper understanding of the CLR internals and some essential patterns, this is the best place to start. Unless you are a seasoned developer, this should not be your first book on .Net.
This book contains a wealth of information that is not available through MSDN and often difficult to find anywhere else. This version, VB.Net, contains a few items that aren't in the C# version, e.g., the difference between DirectCast and CType, but it's definitely not worth purchasing if you already have the C# edition.
I especially enjoyed Richter's coverage of the following:
Primitive Types (especially the bit about constants being compiled into IL)
Events & Delegates (their relationship may surprise some VB developers)
Exception Patterns & Strategies
Garbage Collection & IDisposable
Tough Read.......2005-05-12
I am a technical person. I have developed using VB for nearly ten years now. This is the first .Net book I picked up. It was a mistake. I found that many of the topics covered in this book were easier to learn using other sources.
Great work: needs Summary info.......2004-07-06
This is a great contribution to understanding the .Net framework. I would have liked for Jeff to have included a "Best Practices" or "List of Recommendations" based on his many findings. There's so much content to remember, that it will be hard to use it as a reference if his recommendation isn't in the section/chapter you think.
The Summary Info could be a download or an appendix. Just a thought.
A mastery of the material does not make a good book.......2004-05-20
Mr. Richter has an incredible mastery of the elements of the .NET Framework. As others have observed, Microsoft development teams could indeed benefit from reading the book. (In fact, there are several instances in which Mr. Richter critiques the implementation that Microsoft has provided and offers his recommendation on how it could be improved.) Unfortunately, you would have to be a member of a Microsoft development team to have enough grounding in the concepts presented here to benefit from Mr. Richter's expertise. What it comes down to is there's a difference between presenting material and providing the tools that enable a learning experience to occur.
Book not really in Stock.......2003-04-10
I recently placed an order for the book. The listing for the book says it usually ships in 1 to 2 days. Once I place the order, I could see that the book would not SHIP for 1.5 weeks! Now I would consider canceling the order, but I can't because it has entered the shipping process. There is still a week before it ships.
