1 out of 5 stars Who Cares?.......2005-10-27

Pornographic filmmaker LaBruce deposits assorted columns he authored for a music magazine in this oddly formatted book complemented by photographs. The columns cover everything from drag queens to frustrations of shooting porn films, but fail to answer the question why the reader should care about what this guy has to say. Personally, I found the layout cloyingly annoying and really could have lived without the pictures. For porn film aficionados and those seeking a cheap thrill.

5 out of 5 stars Hysterically funny.......2000-06-06

This is a hysterically funny, name-dropping memoir about the travails of underground filmmaker Bruce LaBruce. By hooking the reader with great gossip about numerous queer and underground celebrities, LaBruce shares with us his very unorthodox philosophy of life. While I don't necessarily agree with his post-queer/post-gay message, the book is hysterically funny. If you loved any of LaBruce's movies, you will definitely dig this book!

5 out of 5 stars Memoirs of a Pornographic Film Director.......1997-12-03

Bruce LaBruce's witty revulsion and response to gay culture--the film industry, drag queens, drugs, and sex--give his latest endeavor a certain pop-philosophical conversational appeal. LaBruce frames the creation of his films around a nostalgia for the old punk underworld of homosexual rebellion. In fact, LaBruce finds contemporary homosexuality almost criminal and desperately claims to detach himself from it. But LaBruce is armed to the hilt with a wicked tongue and a definitive sense of purity in his perversity. He may detest the fine art of homosexuality, but he impressively recounts his own grand history of gay ponderings and encounters. His incessant search for queer identity through his art leaves the reader wanting desperately to help him out, or at least give him a hand, and his chatty style makes the reader look forward to his promised sequel. LaBruce is definitely worthy of his artistic license and creativity.

    Book Description

The corporate downtown, with its multitude of social dilemmas and contradictions, is the focus of this well-illustrated volume. How are downtown projects conceived, scripted, produced, packaged, and used, and how has all this changed during the twentieth century? The authors of Urban Design Downtown offer a critical appraisal of the emerging appearance of downtown urban form. They explore both the poetics of design and the politics and economics of development decisions.
Following a historical review of the various phases of downtown transformation, Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris and Tridib Banerjee turn to contemporary American downtowns. They examine the phenomenon of public-space privatization, arguing that corporate open spaces are the consumer-oriented result of policies that have promoted downtown renovation and restructuring but at the same time have neglected the cities' existing poverty-stricken cores.
The book's case studies of individual West Coast downtown projects capture the essence of late twentieth-century urbanism. This analysis of downtown urban America, which offers extensive insight into the design and development process, will interest architects, city planners, developers, and urban designers everywhere.

        Book Description

Édouard Glissant, long recognized in the French and francophone world as one of the greatest writers and thinkers of our times, is increasingly attracting attention from English-speaking readers. Born in Martinique in 1928, Glissant earned a doctorate from the Sorbonne. When he returned to his native land in the mid-sixties, his writing began to focus on the idea of a "relational poetics," which laid the groundwork for the "créolité" movement, fueled by the understanding that Caribbean culture and identity are the positive products of a complex and multiple set of local historical circumstances. Some of the metaphors of local identity Glissant favored--the hinterland (or lack of it), the maroon (or runaway slave), the creole language--proved lasting and influential.
In Poetics of Relation, Glissant turns the concrete particulars of Caribbean reality into a complex, energetic vision of a world in transformation. He sees the Antilles as enduring suffering imposed by history, yet as a place whose unique interactions will one day produce an emerging global consensus. Arguing that the writer alone can tap the unconscious of a people and apprehend its multiform culture to provide forms of memory capable of transcending "nonhistory," Glissant defines his "poetics of relation"--both aesthetic and political--as a transformative mode of history, capable of enunciating and making concrete a French-Caribbean reality with a self-defined past and future. Glissant's notions of identity as constructed in relation and not in isolation are germane not only to discussions of Caribbean creolization but also to our understanding of U.S. multiculturalism. In Glissant's view, we come to see that relation in all its senses--telling, listening, connecting, and the parallel consciousness of self and surroundings--is the key to transforming mentalities and reshaping societies.
This translation of Glissant's work preserves the resonating quality of his prose and makes the richness and ambiguities of his voice accessible to readers in English.
"The most important theoretician from the Caribbean writing today. . . . He is central not only to the burgeoning field of Caribbean studies, but also to the newly flourishing literary scene in the French West Indies." --Judith Graves Miller, University of Wisconsin, Madison
Édouard Glissant is Distinguished Professor of French at City University of New York, Graduate Center. Betsy Wing's recent translations include Lucie Aubrac's Outwitting the Gestapo (with Konrad Bieber), Didier Eribon's Michel Foucault and Hélêne Cixous's The Book of Promethea.

            Book Description

In The Poetics of Political Thinking Davide Panagia focuses on the role that aesthetic sensibilities play in theorists’ evaluations of political arguments. Examining works by thinkers from Thomas Hobbes to Jacques Rancière, Panagia shows how each one invokes aesthetic concepts and devices, such as metaphor, mimesis, imagination, beauty, and the sublime. He argues that it is important to recognize and acknowledge these poetic forms of representation because they provide evaluative standards that theorists use in appraising the value of ideas—ideas about justice, politics, and democratic life. An investigation into the intertwined histories of aesthetic and political accounts of representation—such as Panagia presents here—sheds light on how modes of poetic thinking delimit the questions of unity and diversity that continue to animate contemporary political theory.

Panagia not only illuminates the structure of much contemporary political theory but also shows why understanding the poetics of political thinking is vital to contemporary society. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze’s critique of negation and his privileging of paradox as the source of political thought, Panagia suggests that a non-teleological concept of difference might generate insight into pressing questions about foreignness and citizenship. Turning to the liberal/poststructural debate that dominates contemporary political theory, he compares John Rawls’s concept of justice to Rancière’s ideas about political disagreement in order to demonstrate how, despite their differences, both thinkers comprehend aesthetic and moral reasoning as part and parcel of political writing. Considering the writings of William Hazlitt and Jürgen Habermas, he describes how the essay has become the exemplary genre of what is considered rational political argument. The Poetics of Political Thinking is a compelling reappraisal of the role of representation within political thought.

Boldrini's study examines how the literary and linguistic theories of Dante's Divine Comedy helped shape the radical narrative techniques of Joyce's last novel Finnegans Wake. Through detailed parallel readings, she explores a range of connections: issues such as the question of Babel, literary creation as excrement, the complex relations among literary, geometrical and female forms. This book will appeal to scholars and students interested in Joyce, Dante, and questions of literary relations.

Lucia Boldrini's study examines how the literary and linguistic theories of Dante's Divine Comedy helped shape the radical narrative techniques of Joyce's last novel Finnegans Wake. Through detailed parallel readings, she explores a range of connections: issues such as the question of Babel, literary creation as excrement, the complex relations between literary, geometrical and female forms. Boldrini places Joyce's work in the wider context of other modernist writing's relation to Dante, thereby identifying the distinctness of Joyce's own project. She considers how theories of influence and intertextuality help or limit the understanding of the relation. Boldrini shows how, through an untiring confrontation with his predecessors, constantly thematised within his writing, Joyce develops a 'poetics in progress' that informs not only his final work but his entire oeuvre. This book will appeal to scholars and students interested in Joyce, Dante, and questions of literary relations.

            Praise for the first edition-

"Every once in a while a book appears that treats the leading issues of a subject in such a clear and challenging manner that it becomes central to understanding that subject. Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice is just such a book. . . . Donnelly's interpretations are clear and argued with zest."-American Political Science Review

"This wide-ranging book looks at all aspects of human rights, drawing upon political theory, sociology, and international relations as well as international law. . . . [Jack Donnelly] deals successfully with two of the principal challenges to the notion of the universality of human rights: the argument that some non-Western societies are not subject to Western norms, and the claim that economic development may require the sacrifice of some human rights."-Foreign Affairs

In a thoroughly revised edition of Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice (more than half of the material is new), Jack Donnelly elaborates a theory of human rights, addresses arguments of cultural relativism, and explores the efficacy of bilateral and multilateral international action. Entirely new chapters address prominent post-Cold War issues including humanitarian intervention, democracy and human rights, "Asian values," group rights, and discrimination against sexual minorities.

            5 out of 5 stars A Starter and a Reference.......2007-01-11

In a sense, this book is so good it doesn't need a review. Almost everyone knows that the Donnelly book is the standard and most readable text on human rights theory. It is a good starter book for the beginner. You'll learn something new on every page. My copy is full of irresistable, self-made underlines, markings, and comments in the margins. It's also a good reference book, one that you'll return to time and time again. Donnelly's method of abbreviation, for example, is standard for the main UN proclamation and two binding covenants (treaties): (U for UDHR; E for CESCR; and C for CCPR). The book differentiates between regimes that exist for declaratory or promotional purposes and those which are involved in implementation of policy or monitoring and enforcement, and Donnelly pulls no punches when pointing out that some state reports in response to Protocol complaints are nothing more than farces. It is found, for example, that there is little reason why the Arab League and various Third Way movements should even be considered human rights organizations. Here are some of the international human rights discussed in this book: Nondiscrimination, Life, Liberty, security of person, Protection against slavery,Protection against torture, Legal personality, Equal protection of the law, Legal remedy, Protection against arbitrary arrest, detention, or exile, Access to independent and impartial tribunal, Presumption of innocence, Protection against ex post facto law, Privacy, Freedom of Movement, Nationality, Marry and found a family, Protection and assistance of families, Marriage only with free consent, Equal rights in marriage, Freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, Freedom of opinion and expression, Freedom of assembly, Freedom of association, Participation in government, Social security, Work, Just and favorable conditions of work, Trade unions, Rest and leisure, Adequate standard of living, Education, Participation in cultural life, Self-determination, Protection of and assistance to children, Freedom from hunger, Health, Asylum, Property, Compulsory primary education, Humane treatment when deprived of liberty, Protection against imprisonment for debt, Expulsion of aliens only by law, Prohibition of war propaganda, Minority culture.

              Book Description

In the Preface to this second edition of her first book, Sandra M. Gilbert addresses the inevitable question: "How can you be a feminist and a Lawrentian?" The answer is intellectually satisfying and historically revealing as she traces an array of early twentieth-century women of letters, some of them proto-feminists, who revered Lawrence despite his countless statements that would today be condemned as "sexist."

H.D. regarded him as one of her "initiators" whose words "flamed alive, blue serpents on the page." Anais Nin insisted that he "had a complete realization of the feelings of women."

By focusing on Lawrence’s own definition of a poem as an "act of attention," Gilbert demonstrates how he developed the mature style of Birds, Beasts and Flowers, his finest collection of poetry. She discusses this volume at length, examines many of his later poems in detail, including the hymns from The Plumed Serpent, Pansies, Nettles, and More Pansies, and ends with a close look at Last Poems. Her detailed examination provides a clearer image of Lawrence as an artist—an artist whose poetry complements his novels and whose fiction enriches but does not outshine his poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Realistic and Practical Look into the Future.......2003-11-20

First off, if this book deserves 5 stars just as a recognition of the depth of the accomplishment (given the breadth of the undertaking) in getting it written, and written extremely well. In an industry where the most successful authors are hacks that put out paper thin salvos to ride whatever the new gauche rave is, this book represents the far opposite end of the spectrum. Clearly, the long history of CASE and modeling and code generation is well in hand as the author pushes through a detailed elaboration of where MDA stands and where it's going. And the news is balanced and delivered honestly, this is not a call to Kool Aid coming from a deluded cult leader. There are open issues, but the general direction of MDA is so overdue and important it's silly. [For a good means of achieving parallax on this issue, consider looking at Cheeseman and Daniels' excellent UML Components, which makes a strong argument for a level of indirection between logical and physical models. If MDA delivers no more than that in the short term, it will still be a huge contribution.]

The reversibility of those models and the degree to which synchronization and editing can be simultaneously supported is perhaps the key issue that remains. Unfortunately, it is something of a deep bind because there is no doubt that the dream of complete reversibility of code and model, which has been hyped a lot over the past 5 years, is a shallow dream (reducing the 'model' to a mere visualization), and yet the idea of not being able to touch what was generated has a similarly stultifying unappeal to it.

As the development world is becoming more polarized between those who would model solutions and the band of hackers who claim to be able to do anything with a scripting language and a database, MDA is a key focal point for the former that is long overdue. Way too much attention has been spent developing tools that make it easy to lay out user interfaces while very few places have achieved even a basic ability to keep a serious domain logical model in tact through a single version, let alone a number of generations. Hopefully the tremendous consensus that has crystallized around MDA is an indication that that balance will soon start to change.

5 out of 5 stars A clear, pragmatic guide to applying MDA.......2003-07-23

I have had the pleasure of working with David Frankel for a number of years on Object Management Group efforts, so I expected a lot from this book. I wasn't disappointed.

Dave has written a clear, pragmatic guide to what MDA is and, more importantly, what really can (and cannot) be practically accomplished with MDA today. He unerringly focuses on the highest payoff areas for most projects, such as the generation of code from data models. He also brings his years of experience in developing enterprise systems to bear, clearly describing the specific issues involved in applying MDA in this difficult area.

The book gives a thorough presentation of the concepts behind MDA -- including the clearest discussion I have seen anywhere of OMG's Meta Object Facility, a perennial topic of confusion. Nevertheless, I don't really consider this a book on "MDA" as such. It is, indeed, a book on APPLYING MDA, as the title states.

If you are looking for a more theoretical presentation or a grand vision of how MDA will work someday, you may be disappointed. But if you are looking for techniques you can start applying the week after you finish the book, this is the book you want to be finishing.

I am currently Chief Architect at a company that is in the process of making the cultural and technical shift to model-driven development. I found this book so relevant to where we are and the next steps we need to take toward MDA, that I had the company buy copies for all our architects, plus a few extras to circulate among the developers. I even had my boss (the company president) read Part One, which provided just the right level of overview for him (plus Michael Guttman's forward, which is a fun read in itself).

If you are in a similar situation where you work, I couldn't suggest a better book as a helpful change agent. And if you simply want to know how to start applying MDA techniques for enterprise development, this is where to find out.

3 out of 5 stars This is not a book for technologists..............2003-06-27

I read this book after reading MDA Explained by Anneke Kleppe and found it wandering into many areas but not deep enough in any one of them. While this book is a decent attempt to bring forth the impact of MDA in enterprise computing, a reader looking to understand "what" MDA is and "how it" works would be thoroughly disappointed. MDA Explained is a far more useful (and thinner) book that is not only more readable but also lucid in explanation.

5 out of 5 stars Well Thoughtout, Wonderfully Written.......2003-03-18

This has got to be one of those books you will see on your computer shelf for years to come. Frankel has taken a seemingly complex topic, model driven architecture, and reduced it to straight-forward explanations written in an easy to understand style. His command of the topic is astounding (as were his contributions to MDA itself)! I highly recommend this book to enterprise architects, senior analysts and IT professional consultants.

5 out of 5 stars A must for anyone interested in MDA.......2003-02-18

This is a seriously good book. If you're at all interested in MDA, get it! Not only does it provide a comprehensive introduction to MDA - with detailed but simple examples, not only does it set MDA squarely in its industry perspective, not only is Part I an excellent overview that stands by itself, not only does it put the discussion in the context of a typical scalable enterprise distributed architecture, not only only is it authoritative, but it's also easy to read!

There are respected practioners in the industry who say that MDA will eventually turn out to be the thing that moves the effort and intellectual property involved in applications away from being embedded in code, and into design - just like in most other industries. In other words, MDA will be the catalyst for a fast evolution to a much higher level of application development - equivalent to the move from Assembler to 3GL (and a few say Assembler direct to 4GL!). Certainly the tools vendors seem to be jumping on the bandwagon, and not just in their hype, but in the MDA capabilities their products are providing. Whatever side you're on, if you want to equip yourself with the facts to better assess MDA, then this is the book to buy.
