Laughs indeed as Jess Oppenheimer charts his rise from radio station gofer to inventor of the sitcom, as he winds up writing--then producing--Lucille Ball's show, first on radio, then on television. Luck, too, as the author recounts the good fortune that has him, within minutes of arrival in Hollywood, sitting down at a lunch counter and getting a tip that secures a job within days and a career for life. Ironic, too, that this inveterate TV writer had to be cajoled for years to set down these Hollywood heyday memoirs. He never finished, and it was left to son Gregg to complete the book. All this, plus a reproduced Lucy script, and a CD-ROM filled with famous sketches!
Book Description
Half a century after its debut, "I Love Lucy" remains the most popular and influential sitcom phenomenon in TV history. Jess Oppenheimer, "the brains" of "I Love Lucy," gives us an insider's view of this groundbreaking show, generously interspersed with actual recordings of classic Lucy performances--including her famous "Vitameatavegamin" routine. Sounding much like an episode of "Lucy" itself, Oppenheimer weaves a wonderfully entertaining tale of the creation of this landmark show. Lucy aficionados will also delight in his personal accounts of stars such as Desi Arnaz, William Frawley, Vivian Vance, and of course, Lucille Ball. Read by three-time "I Love Lucy" veteran Larry Dobkin, and featuring comedy performances by Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Gale Gordon, Hans Conried, Bea Benaderet, Frank Nelson, and more! Published in hard cover as "Laughs, Luck...and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time."
Customer Reviews:
Great book and cd!!!.......2007-03-15
This is an excellent informative book about the "I Love Lucy" show and a must have for any Lucy fan! The cd that is included is worth the price of the whole set alone. In the cd it includes hours of hilarious episodes from I Love Lucy and My Favorite Husband starring Lucille Ball, you will also receive lost scenes from the shows on the cd. I am not much of a reader but this book you just can't put down because it is so good and of course I love Lucy! The book doesn't look thick on the picture shown on Amazon but it is a nice thick paperback book and includes lots of wonderful pictures of the cast of I Love Lucy and fun information that you may have not of known about I love Lucy and how it became to be produced.
Good bargain.......2005-09-26
Out of print book came quickly and condition was very good, service was quick. I will be back.
COULDNT PUT IT DOWN!.......2005-08-09
I THOUGHT THE BOOK WAS VERY INTERESTING AND INFORMTIVE! IT WAS HILARIOUS AND I JUST COULDNT PUT IT DOWN. IT ONLY TOOK ME THREE DAYS TO READ IT. I THOUGHT IT WAS INTERESTING HOW IT TOLD ABOUT THE LIFE OF JESS OPPENHEIMER AS WELL AS THE LIFE OF LUCILLE BALL AND OTHER CAST MEMBERS FROM THE SHOW I LOVE LUCY. I REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK AND I THINK EVERY I LOVE LUCY FAN SHOULD READ IT!!!
Behind the Scenes of the Best TV Show Ever.......2004-05-03
I'd like to start with a clarification: this book is not a biography of Lucy, it is the creator's (Jess Oppenheimer) memoir. As such, there are many parts of the book that have nothing to do with Lucy, including episodes from Oppenheimer's childhood and young adult life.
However, this is still a GREAT book! It is well-written and full of entertaining annecdotes. "Laughs, Luck, and Lucy" follows Oppenheimer's slow rise to the top in the Hollywood radio industry. He describes Lucille Ball's program, "My Favorite Husband," which became the basis for "I Love Lucy." The book also includes some behind the scenes information about the making of "I Love Lucy."
The included audio cd is fun because it has clips from both "I Love Lucy" and "My Favorite Husband."
If you are only interested in information specifically about Lucille Ball, this might not be the book for you (try her autobiography, "Love, Lucy"). However, if you (like me) are fascinated with everything surrounding "I Love Lucy" and the Hollywood entertainment industry of the 1940s and 1950s, this is a great read!
A gripping read.......2003-10-27
The best "Lucy" book yet. Aside from providing amazing insight into the "I Love Lucy" show and behind the scenes, this book also makes the reader feel as if he has been right along side Jess Oppenheimer throughout all of his fascinating experiences in San Francisco and early Hollywood. By the time I finished the book, I felt like I was saying good-bye to an old friend. Laugh out loud funny and impossible to put down, the book is brilliantly written and feels like a hilarious conversation with a genious.

Naturally Good.......2002-02-18
THE COMPLETE BACKYARD NATURE ACTIVITY BOOK
You can tell that Robin Michal Koontz, the author-illustrator of this book, has personal knowledge of the wildlife subjects she writes about. Each topic, from butterflies to birds to bats, gives children a wealth of information and plenty of projects to choose from. For example, kids can make a hummingbird feeder from an empty plastic bottle or draw a "family tree" of all the animals that use a tree for food or shelter. The sidebars provide fascinating information, such as the fact that many birds pick up ants and tuck them under their wings, so that the ants can deter lice, mites, and other annoying pests. I highly recommend this book - parents as well as kids can learn from it.

This is a well organized book with interesting projects especially for children. Some of the projects are a bit too childish and simple. Lots of nice pictures. In general, it fits its title and supplies what it promises.

Customer Reviews:
Save your money.......2007-09-08
I have always been a big fan of the "imponderables" genre, but I had never read any by author David Feldman, an apparently prolific author in the that specific field. I thought the best place to start would be with his first Imponderalbes book, "Why Don't Cats Like to Swim?," which had apparently been originally published with the title, "Imponderables." I further assumed that an author's first venture into this genre would be the most interesting in that there was a high probability of an array of interesting subjects that eventually led to his writing the book. Well, I was wrong!
I finished this book in record time because I discovered that I couldn't care less about many of the alleged imponderables that were discussed. Really, who really cares about some of the following:
Why does root beer taste flatter than coke?
Which fruits are in Juicy Fruit chewing gum?
If trailer parks didn't exist, would tornadoes exist?
Why don't we ever see money from pay phones collected?
What is the purpose of the little slits in sugar cube wrappers?
What is a minor credit card?
Why are so many milk packages difficult to open and close?
If those and similar questions intrique you, you will probably enjoy this book.
About the only section that I found truly interesting was the section describing how stage hypnotists do their thing.
Perhaps his subsequent works got better in that the author solicites potential questions from his readership to be dealt with in later books. I'll never find out.
A BOOK OF SMALL SUBSTANCE.......2007-07-30
There are a number of these books out by this author and I had seen some adds that made them look very interesting. I found a number of problems with this book. There were items that only received a small paragraph that I would have liked to have seen pages, and items with pages that could have been a single paragraph. I also wanted more detail that was there, plus it would have been nice to have seen resources on where the information came from. I gave it a 2 as it was interesting to a very small point.
Great factoids but dated.......2007-03-08
This book is an interesting collection of factoids. However, it is dated.
Great book.......2007-01-19
Great book. I purchased this for my 12 year old nephew last christmas and he loved it, because that is how his mind works. Fortunatly, so does mine - I love to think about things so I had to read it first! What fun!
Great appeal for kids.......2007-01-18
I was leary of this purchase, wondering if it would interest my 8 yr-old daughter, but it turned out to be a GREAT present. She keeps it in the car ; which works perfectly, as she can read each short tidbit in the time it takes us to run here and there. She is really enjoying learning from this book and for us, its been a great way to keep her reading!

Fun!: The Sound of Short U
Book Description
A son of the conservative South and president of his college’s Young Christian Club, Dave Smith was radicalized by Vietnam. The young Porsche-driving computer programmer went to work with César Chávez during the formative years of the United Farm Workers. From there, Smith became instrumental in founding a series of businesses — including the seminal gardening and lifestyle company Smith and Hawken — that planted the seeds for the now-burgeoning organic and sustainable business movements. In this fascinating memoir of his transformation, Smith shows how business can be a force for radical change, that business driven by simple core values — not the hijacked values of right-wing extremism but common values of compassion and decency — can truly make the world a better place. To Be of Use is both an entertaining, stirring read and a thoughtful guide to making our work lives personally meaningful again.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and thoughtful.......2007-05-05
The worldview expressed in this book is built on a foundation of ethics, decency, and humanism. Smith speaks to what Lincoln called "the better angels of our nature" in outlining not only a culture of work but an overall sensibility that can transform our productivity and relationships. What the author does exceedingly well is to show how the transformative values of the Sixties have been manifested in the new world of business and work. The cynics, of course, write off that decade as an era of excess and hypocrisy. Smith demonstrates that those values are alive and well and growing in the very institutions that define our lives. Idealism can generate change, and it's time we acknowledge it.
Inspiring and engaging.......2006-10-26
Dave Smith is a man of vision who walks his talk. He's brought values and conscience to his business ventures, and has rubbed elbows with many others who've done the same. He's unassuming and down-to-earth as he shares not only his experiences but the meaning behind them, and the impact a host of fellow Creative Action Heroes have had on their small communities and the world at large. "To Be of Use" entertains with Dave's characteristic easy, familiar voice, and it inspires those of us who hope to put our visions into action, and be truly useful in our work and in all the choices we make each day.
More than meaningful work.......2006-04-25
Dave Smith's book on finding meaningful work reminds me to strive to lead a meaningful life based on my own values. The author's honesty and humility in telling his own story from preacher's son to assistant to Cesar Chavez to founding meaningful businesses kept me engaged throughout. I found his spiritual beliefs reassuring and inspiring. Anyone searching for meaningful work or a meaningful life should find this book most helpful.
To Be of REAL Use.......2005-12-08
Dave Smith is the true unsung hero of his remarkably inspiring book. For business people to walk-the-walk and maintain their professional and private life with true sustainable comittment is noble. Dave's book will inspire those who are on the path of considering healthy models of entrepenearship and also rekindle many who are searching for soulful innovation. This book ignites thinking for the long term...it is good, and kind, and genuine.
Learn how to sing..........2005-11-05
Since the majority of middle-class American's spend most their waking lives at work, it makes sense to think about what work is, and what it means to you.
If your determined to find work you can put your heart into, then your hours will be full of meaning, and you will feel energetic and alive. If you settle for doing work you don't much care about, your hours will likely lack meaning, and you will harbor the sensation that life is missing something.
Henry David Thoreau is often quoted as that "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation..." Most men don't honestly contemplate what makes life worth living, makes it bearable, makes it joyful even, so they "...go to the grave with the song still in them".
The best years of the rest of your life will be spent working. There's a right way, and a wrong way to do it. With a groan, or with a song.
