Book Description

An aristocrat named Nobile invites several society friends to his house after the opera. But even as the dinner preparations are underway, servants feel compelled to leave. Despite threats of dismissal, the footman also leaves, and, as the guests arrive other servants escape. Dinner is served and hours pass, but the guests do not leave. Finally, each refusing to be the first to leave the party, distrust sets in, and the guests turn on their host, blaming him for their self-induced captivity.

One of Bunuel's most sardonically humorous and visually dazzling of movies, Exterminating Angel reveals itself as a screenplay to be also a linguistically brilliant satire of social aspirations. This 1962 film presents in self in script form as a great work of literature.

5 out of 5 stars Bunuel's Surreal Script.......2005-05-06

The probability is high that you have reached this web page while searching the terms surreal, surrealism or Luis Bunuel. Literary consumers who seek these terms are already well versed on the legacy of surrealists and do not merit a long lecture from me on what Bunuel's philosophy entails and how The Exterminating Angel exemplifies it. At the same time, having read the book several times, I do not think I can reduce this book review to a mere blurb filled with adjectives. It seems important to point out, even to die-hard fans of the surreal creed, the merits of reading a work that is already well regarded as a cinema. While the movie is a voyeuristic journey for the viewer, the book, which is the script, points fingers at the reader. The movie encourages the viewer to laugh at the bourgeoisie without a sense of self-questioning discomfort. The book's dark humor, devoid of the distractions of moving picture, engages a reader and forges a sense of identification with the hapless characters. The book is not so much Bunuel thumping class conflict issues as much as an unpretentious look at how people can be trapped in loveless relationships, dishonest social pretensions and customs, spiritually toxic religious practices, and, well, sheer greed....The symbology of Bunuel's work acquires different complexions in the book-you go figure out what it reveals to you. Be forewarned, Bunuel is the exterminating angel who will trap you in the pages of this book. To end with a blurbism - a fascinating voyage for an enquiring mind.

Ever feel like you're being kept in the dark? Do you feel like the facts and history you rely on might not be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but?

Just in time for 2004's Christmas parties and other holiday get-togethers, Russ Kick delivers a second round of stunning information, forgotten facts and hidden history. The first volume was the gift to give and get for the holiday season of 2003; surprising, shocking and controversial, the "things" in Volume 2 will make 2004's holiday parties sizzle with debate over Kick's revelations-all thoroughly researched and documented.

Sized for quick reference, filled with facts, illustrations, and graphic evidence of lies and misrepresentations, 50 Things You're Not Supposed to Know-Volume 2 presents the vital, often omitted details on human health hazards, government lies, and secret history and warfare excised from your schoolbooks and nightly news reports.

Russ Kick and The Disinformation Company have published five successful books together since 2001. Each one has become a bestseller, establishing Russ as the leader in gathering and disseminating the hidden history, forgotten facts, secret stories and covert cover-ups that "they" don't want you to know!

Russ Kick is the editor of Abuse Your Illusions: The Disinformation Guide to Media Mirages and Establishment Lies; Everything You Know Is Wrong: The Disinformation Guide to Secrets and Lies; and You Are Being Lied To: The Disinformation Guide to Media Distortion, Historical Whitewashes and Cultural Myths. He is the author of 50 Things You're Not Supposed To Know and The Disinformation Book of Lists.

4 out of 5 stars Getting the Truth Out.......2007-03-03

I got this little book in a package of discount books I received a little while ago. I didn't know anything about it and I wasn't aware it was a sequel to another book I hadn't even read when I flipped through it and began reading. It turned out to be a fun way to spend an hour or so.

I like "trivia" books like this one. Of course, the conceit behind this one is that we're being told "things we're not supposed to know." Some of the claims made here are debatable but there are also many interesting items: ten percent of the population weren't fathered by the man they think is their father, fetuses masturbate, the Declaration of Independence contains a racially derogatory remark, Audubon killed all the birds he painted, etc.

The book fails a bit by a tendency towards repetition (especially in 9/11 & war in Iraq info) which makes it seem a bit padded. Maybe this is because it's hard to reach the same heights in a sequel but, since I haven't read the original, I can't judge. Still, there's enough good stuff here to make it worth the investment of the time it takes to read it.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed bag---a few bombshells, but mostly hyperbole.......2006-12-19

This 1/4" thick, 4x6 index card of a book touts itself as a "take-no-prisoners" exposé when it is, in fact, merely a collection of random "shocking" trivia. Sadly, the few real bombshells that the book DOES contain are overwhelmed by the hyperbolic tone of the rest.

Here are the bombshells, facts that might make us seriously re-evaluate our relationship with those in power:
                    - The US is Planning to Provoke Terrorist Attacks
                    - Kent State Wasn't the Only---or Even the First---Massacre of College Students During the Vietnam Era
                    - Juries are Allowed to Judge the Law, Not Just the Facts
                    - The Government Can Take Your House and Land, Then Sell Them to Private Corporations
                    - Prescription Drugs Kill Over 100,000 Annually
                    - Work Kills More People Than War

The quality of the other 44 topics ranges from moderately interesting yet trivial ("Adolf Hitler's Blood Relatives are Alive and Well in New York State" and "The Virginia Colonists Practiced Cannibalism") to no-brainers such as "Advertisers' Influence on the News Media is Widespread." There is no consistent theme linking the 50 disparate "things you're not supposed to know," other than the fact that they are "supposed" to be secrets, but that assertion is pure hyperbole. After all, all it takes to find out that the Korean War never ended, that nuclear war almost broke out in 1995, or that LSD was a used as a powerful adjunct to psychotherapy, is a glance at Wikipedia, hardly a repository of repressed esotericism.

This is a pretty good place to start learning "secret" information if you're still embedded in the indoctrination factory we call junior high or high school, and it admittedly makes for decent bathroom reading, but those interested in real bombshells would do well to look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Make sure you read the product details!!!.......2006-11-07

I paid full retail for this "book" and when I got it, I was disappointed; it is more like a pamphlet! It's about 120 pages and the dimentions are 5" X 5". It's just tiny!!!! I know that the dimensions are listed in the product details portion of the ad, but who the hell reads that; I thought for $10 I would get a "real" book! I wouldn't pay more than two or three dollars for this book and it should be a lot less than that in my opinion. All of the information contained could be found on any "strange facts" web site.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Romp through the World of "Secrets".......2006-04-23

Russ Kick has written a fun little book that combines the "truthiness" of tabloid journalism with paranoid conspiracy theory in 50 little bite-size chunks. It's a blast to read if you don't take it too seriously.

Some of the "secrets" disclosed in Kick's book are pretty tame and obvious. For example, some African-Americans did indeed fight for the Confederacy in the Civil War. The Germans did use IBM computers to keep track of many concentration camp inmates. And of course, the government is known to lie, dissemble and distort the facts about just about anything when the political pressure is on.

On the other hand, Kick himself is way off base on several counts. His technique is pretty easy to decipher: Take a little known fact from the history books and blow it up into a massive "revelation" meant to shock and astound the reader. Examples include:

-- The police aren't legally obligated to protect you
-- The Supreme Court is wishy-washy on the use of illegal drugs
-- Many early feminists opposed abortion (for different reasons)
-- One of the Popes wrote an erotic book
-- Some environmentalists strongly support nuclear power

When you really dig into the details, you'll find that most of these claims either half-truths or overly inflated trivia. Nevertheless, "50 Things" is a great conversation starter and you can read the entire book in about an hour. Good for grins, if nothing else.

3 out of 5 stars Tries. Does not succeed........2006-03-24

Russ Kick, 50 Things You're Not Supposed to Know (disinfo, com, 2003)

Don't you love books like this? Their titles promise you the secrets of the universe (which universe, of course, depends on what you're reading into the title), but what they deliver is invariably not what you were looking for. Expect the same here.

When he's on his game, Kick does deliver some interesting and relatively obscure data to the reader. When he's not, which is unfortunately all too often, he hands us stuff that's been on at least a thousand trivia lists circling the internet at any given time. Combine this with Kick's obvious slant towards some of his subject matter, which is so predictable it's almost stereotypical, and you get a book that, despite its slimness, can be wearying at times.

Good to pick up and riffle through once in a while looking for something random. Not a keeper, though. ** ½

                      Book Description

25 chess games chosen, arranged, and annotated to help amateurs learn how to avoid a variety of weak strategic and tactical moves. Selected, with commentary, by World Chess Champion Max Euwe and by Walter Meiden, an amateur player, the games point out graphically how the chess master exploits characteristic errors of the amateur.

                      5 out of 5 stars chess mastery.......2007-07-27

The book "Chess Master vs. Chess Amateur" is one of the best books I have read on the subject of learning to play chess. The senior author, Max Euwe, was not only a World Champion but was also a scholar and prolific author. He writes very well and with great authority. He, and his coauthor, Walter Meiden show the reader step-by-step the many mistakes amateur players make and the way master players recognize and respond to those mistakes. The book begins with analyses of games in which the amateur player is very weak, moves through games with stronger amateurs, and ends with games against expert or near expert players. Throughout the book the authors show the reader how the amateurs' mistakes were exploited by the master player. This is a very instructive book.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but may not benefit your play much........2006-11-03

This is a very popular book and a very well written, as is everything my Max Euwe. The average rating I'm giving is based on its impact on my chess playing, which was minimal.

It falls into the category of "Move by move" chess books, and is every bit a well written at Logical Chess. It differs, however, by always have one player rated significantly lower than the other, and points out the ways to exploit poor play.

The problem I have with the book is the same problem I have the Logical Chess, Move by Move. They introduce concepts as they appear in the game, give a brief explanation of the theory behind it, then move on.

For example, at the beginning of each chapter in CM vs CA, Euwe list about 6 concepts that will pop up in the game. At the appropriate point, he will spend a few paragraphs explaining why, for instance, white's bishop is more powerful than black's because of the current pawn structure, then he moves on. The game ends, the next one begins, and the ideas listed are all different. There might be another game in the book that describes good bishops vs bad bishops, but that might be the only time you got to see it. (I don't have the book with me now, so this bishop example might not be perfectly accurate.) Strategic ideas seem to come and go without giving the reader any firm grasp on the concept.

At the level that I am (approx. 1400), I knew the basic ideas for all these strategic elements, I just didn't know how to implement them in my games. This book didn't help me do that. I suppose that were you not familiar with chess strategy, this book would be helpful. With a 314 page book that covers openings, strategy, and endgames, you can't expect anything to be covered very thoroughly.

Again, the book is very well written and deserves the high marks it gets. It just didn't help me very much. I'm 25% through Modern Chess Strategy by Pachman and it has already done so much more for me than CM vs CA.

4 out of 5 stars Instructive Games to learn from.......2006-10-03

This is one of the best game collection books for a lower rated chess player. Typical types of mistakes made by weaker players are taken advantage of by stonger players (masters). This is a good way to learn what not to do and how to take advantage of typical mistakes made by the opponents you are likely to play. This is very good instruction by using games (also falling into this catagory are "Unbeatable Chess Lessons" and "Logical Chess" - also recommended reading!). There are some mistakes and typos, but not a lot. And it is not in algebraic chess notation. For these two reasons I give it four instead of five stars.

5 out of 5 stars The best chess book I have read so far.......2006-08-15

A caveat is in order here: I have read only seven (for-beginners) books.

However, I feel like my "chess muscles" have developed since I started reading this book.

At first, I found it hard to read (at 300+ pages). Then I decided to take it slow, around five pages daily, to derive maximum value. On certain days, I got carried away and covered as many as 15 pages, which took me and my Pocketgrandmaster about two hours.

Why is this the best chess book I have read so far? I found it filled with nuggets of chessic wisdom. Although I would expect that some of his analysis could now be questioned (given the evolution of chess theory since the publication date and the availability of powerful chess softwares), I think that there is still much to be learned from this book.

                      4 out of 5 stars National Master / Professional Chess Teacher's Opinion.......2005-03-25

I think this book is one of the best books for beginner to novice players, or with a rating up to 1600-1700. This book is NOT kid friendly though. I use the games in it to teach classes, but I would never recommend a child buys it. It is great for adults, however keep in mind it uses the old fashion descriptive notation. I wish there were more books out like this. Most books show games between two grandmasters, but it is very useful to watch the way a Master beats a weak player. A 1600 player will learn how a Master easily disposes of 1600 players.

                      Book Description

The turnover rate for companies in the construction industry is high. This book identifies the ten key elements of contractor failure and shows how to avoid them. Each element of failure is defined, illustrated by real examples, and ways are discussed to avoid or minimize the risks involved. The final chapter shows how to bring all these elements together to develop a positive and workable management strategy. This survival guide should prove invaluable to the 1.4 million individual construction-industry businesses in this country.

5 out of 5 stars The First Book a Contractor Should Read.......2007-02-01

"Your management decisions alone determine whether you will succeed or fail in the construction business." As a general contractor, my attention was caught by this the opening sentence in Thomas C. Schleifer's "Construction Contractor's Survival Guide". After reading the book I ordered a copy for every one of my project managers and other key staff and continued using it for training throughout my construction career. Schleifer was formerly a consultant to the surety industry, where it was his business to understand the causes of contractors' failures, and it is from this perspective that he describes in his book the ten most common causes of contractor failure and how a contractor can avoid them. No contractor should be without this book.

Anyone interested in going into the construction biz should make this required reading. If you are already a contractor then this book reminds you how difficult our line of work is and gives you some ways to limit the dangers.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone in the construction industry.......1999-10-02

Reading this book makes one rethink "the bigger the better" philosophy. In this book, Tom discusses from his experinces as a consultant as to why there are so many companies that fail in the construction industry and what could be done to prevent the cash flow problems...
