Book Description
With McDonalds in Moscow and Disneyland in Paris and Tokyo, American popular culture is spreading around the globe. Regional, national, and ethnic cultures are being powerfully affected by competition from American values and American popular forms. This literate and lively study explores the spread of American culture into international cinema as reflected by the collision and partial merger of two important styles of filmmaking: the Hollywood style of stars, genres, and action, and the European art film style of ambiguity, authorial commentary, and borrowings from other arts. Peter Lev departs from the traditional approach of national cinema histories and discusses some of the blends, overlaps, and hegemonies that are typical of the world film industry of recent years. In Part One, he gives a historical and theoretical overview of what he terms the "Euro-American art film," which is characterized by prominent use of the English language, a European art film director, cast and crew from at least two countries, and a stylistic mixing of European art film and American entertainment. The second part of Lev's study examines in detail five examples of the Euro-American art film: Contempt (1963), Blow-Up (1966), The Canterbury Tales (1972), Paris, Texas (1983), and The Last Emperor (1987). These case studies reveal that the European art film has had a strong influence on world cinema and that many Euro-American films are truly cultural blends rather than abject takeovers by Hollywood cinema. Peter Lev is an associate professor of mass communication at Towson State University.
Book Description
What's the perfect dog for you? It depends on your lifestyle. Are you a couch potato or an athlete? A city slicker or a suburbanite? Do you suffer from allergies? Are you paranoid about security?
With The Good, the Bad, and the Furry, author Sam Stall offers the inside poop on the world s most popular breeds and describes which ones are right for you. Stall has consulted with dozens of breed rescue groups to learn the best and worst perks, quirks, and personality traits of more than 100 different dogs.
You'll learn that, contrary to what you see on Frasier, Jack Russell terriers make terrible apartment dogs (they have tremendous energy and need plenty of open space to burn it off). A much better choice for apartment dwellers is the Greyhound. (Sure, they can outrun virtually anything on four legs, but they're also content to spend all afternoon lounging on the couch.)
Complete with more than 100 whimsical illustrations, The Good, the Bad, and the Furry make choosing the right dog a snap!

Saved us from our whimsical selves!.......2007-06-27
My husband and I bought this book while we are deciding on a breed for our retirement. Much loved Standard poodles have ruled our hearts for decades but we want a smaller lower maintenance dog for our retirement, This book quickly eliminated 9 of our top 10 choices...concise and entertaining while pointing out MAJOR liabilities by breed, health problems and potential personality conflicts. No American Staffordshire or Jack Russell will be snoozing by our fire!
Necessarily limited in the number of breeds reviewed, readers will get this...research, research, research for a long and happy doggy relationship. Buy this!
Terrific for family searching.......2007-06-25
I'll admit he was a unfair to AmStaffs, pit bulls, and Chow Chows, but I think it was a fairly wise choice for his market. All the dogs he warns against are big, powerful dogs- not exactly something you want to encourage first time dog owners, or people looking for family pets to go for. Stressing the negatives was probably very helpful to the breeds- he also stressed the negatives of Dalmatians, so it's a pity this book didn't come out years ago.
Stall seemed very intent on showing that not every dog is good for every person, and I saw the book as being particularly aimed at newbie owners or families, and for that target market is just about perfect.
Actually, this book's article on AmStaffs made a friend of mine eager to get one. He had never heard of them before, was intrigued by the article, and went looking. He's just waiting to settle into his new place before he finds a rescue agency to adopt.
Best help ever.......2007-03-20
Provides a common-sense approach to choosing a dog. This is a must-read for any first time dog owner.
Covers all the Bases (Though Not all the Breeds).......2007-02-26
For its size and cost, this is one of the best, most comprehensive books on what breed of dog to get (or NOT to get) that I've never come across. No other book on the subject, at least none that I've ever seen, gives the reader every imaginable reason why (or why NOT) to choose a particular breed. This one covers all the bases (though not all breeds).
That's right, I was a bit dismayed to find my favorite--the English setter--missing. And there are a number of others not found here as well. But for the breeds that ARE included, the authors give pretty much dead-on, accurate descriptions of their basic temperaments, behavioral tendencies (pro and con), historical uses, grooming and exercise requirements (or lack thereof), not to mention potential genetic disorders, etc., etc, etc. That's a lot of valuable information crammed into a nicely packaged, cleverly designed, and well-written little book. To do that with absolutely every breed imaginable (including my favorite), you'd have a huge, 2,000 page, $300 book on your hands.
Four stars.
Excellent Overview Of Different Dog Breeds.......2007-01-23
My wife and me are in the process of deciding on a dog to bring into our home and have found this book to be very helpful and informative. In fact, I would consider it to be a good way to learn about different types of dogs even for those not currently looking for one. Very educational!
My only minor complaint is that the "Brains" category should be re-defined as "Trainability". All dogs are intelligent. But some dogs, like English Bulldogs and Basset Hounds, were bred to be independent thinkers. Therefore, they are typically more difficult to train than other breeds, like Labrador Retrievers, who were bred specifically to respond to human instructions. These "independent thinker" breeds are usually more difficult to train but equally intelligent.
Overall, this is still a terrific book and comes highly recommended!

Harder than ususal.......2007-08-05
Not for the person looking for easy solving. These are small challenging puzzles on a small table that is easy to use in your car.
Hooked by Henry on Cryptic Crosswords.......2007-06-28
My wife and I love cryptic crossword puzzles. While Henry Hook's puzzles are smaller, they are more challenging than other cryptics and the smaller book makes it easy to take on trips. We hope Henry is writing more cryptic crosswords as we write this review.
Handy size for travel - medium difficulty.......2007-06-12
This little book is shaped a bit oddly and it only measures about 3 inches by 6 inches. I found it easy to stash in an already full briefcase on a recent trip. Airports are so annoying -- hurry up and wait, people yakking on their cell phones, etc. I just bury my nose in a puzzle book and tune them out. I've done about 10 of the 45 puzzles and find them to be just about right for me: not so easy that I burn them up in 10 minutes per puzzle, but not so hard that I pile more frustration on top of the frustrations of flying in America in 2007. I've been doing cryptics for about 10 years. These puzzles might be a bit hard for a beginner.
You get what you pay for.......2007-05-16
This is a little memo-pad-sized booklet containing 39 small vanilla cryptics, some of them recycled from Hook's _Mighty Mini Cryptics_. On the plus side, the author is Henry Hook, the booklet has a sewn binding(!), and it's inexpensive.
It's fine, and I guess I'm glad I bought it, but if you have any experience with cryptics don't get your hopes up that this will provide you with a lot of puzzling challenge.

Got a few minutes? That's more than enough time to test your word search skills. Actually, you'll see how clever you are at wordplay 35 times because that's how many baffling puzzles are here.
Book Description
Take a package tour of 35 travel-related word searches! Just look for all the words and phrases packed into each puzzle, and when they’re all found, read the leftover letters from left to right, starting at the top row, to get a bonus message.
Book Description
These cryptograms, from the National Puzzlers' League, won't be easy because the creators have taken pains to remove the easiest steps usually available to solvers. Regularly occurring articles and conjunctions are gone; the sentences often don't even have the rhythms of ordinary speech. But that will make the reward even sweeter once the answers are found.

the puzzler.......2005-12-30
I loved Sit & Solve Cryptograms, but I was very disappointed with S&SC#2. The authors were more interested in finding quotes that didn't contain words like "the" than they were in finding interesting and meaningful quotes. Most were just a bunch of jibberish. Also, the font used is very small and close together, making it very difficult to read what you've solved.
Won't buy this book.......2005-01-15
Although I love to do cryptogram puzzles, I won't be buying this or any other book of puzzles with a toilet seat on the cover. For this puzzle-doer, an instant turn-off. Sorry!

Book Description
Simple substitutions--that's all you have to do to come up with a solution! Just figure out which letter stands for another and you'll be able to read fantastic quotations from famous people. Don't worry, you'll get hints on how to begin and narrow down the choices. Remember that a one-letter word is always A or I, and that in a two-letter word, one must be a vowel. Apostrophes can also eliminate lots of possibilities. Some words--like AND--occur over and over, so look out for them. Keep an eye out for -ed, -ing, and -tion endings, too. In every cryptogram the code is consistent, but it does change from puzzle to puzzle. So, now you know how to go.give this a shot!

Lots of Fun.......2005-12-30
If you love cryptograms you'll love this book! Each cryptogram was a quote by a famous person. The letter spacing was perfect making it easy to read and solve. Each puzzle provides one clue. If you're diligent you shouldn't need the clues. Only one draw back, the author should not have put the clue pages next to the answer pages. Every once in a while I'd go to the answer instead of the clue. This was a bit frustrating.
Book Description
Grab a pencil, get started, and soon you'll be exercising your brain (and, with a little luck, a few other muscles, too). While you're waiting for nature to take its course, try some clueless crosswords, where you fill in the blanks to form eight seven-letter words. Or, do double exposures, where you first figure out the six-letter words that read from top to bottom in the columns; that reveals only half the letters, so then you'll have to take one from the top squares of each column and transfer it to the blank above to reveal a phrase. Also fill-in stations, split decisions, two-by-twos, and lots more like this one:

mind-twisting puzzles, as usual from George Bredehorn!.......2002-05-22
If you can get past the tasteless packaging of this little book, you'll find it chock full of the same terrific, challenging puzzles we've come to expect from Mr. Bredehorn - not just Split Decisions, but all the other mind-benders, albeit in smaller size. I don't spend enough time in the smallest room of my house to finish one of these puzzles THERE, and it IS a bit embarrassing to leave this book out on the kitchen table, where I USUALLY practise mental exercise - but nobody's coming over today, so what the heck!?!

Good for everyone.......2005-11-29
I'm not a puzzle person, but these short word searches are accessible enough to amuse me and my teenage kids. I especially enjoy discovering the creative details in the puzzles that make them more interesting to me than other word search puzzles.

Book Description
The "cross anagrams" and "boomerangs" make perfect starting puzzles, but when the mental juices start flowing, give a "Helter Skelter" example a try. For a really liberal dose of red herrings and tricky clues, "Missing Links" are just the things. But easy or hard, each one is lots of fun and an irresistible incentive to get out the pencils and erasers and dig in.

You will also find a detailed explanation of the approach you should take to make the changes entirely self-funding.
It is written for these tough economic times. It doesnt stop at explaining concepts. It brings them to life and helps you apply the ideas in your unique context; applying these ideas can make all the difference between struggling for survival and growing stronger through the tough times by creating superior value. The chart to the left illustrates the kind of benefits you can create for your organization by applying the ideas in the book. Driving Change.......2006-06-13
Shocking Velocity is an excellent aid for managers and consultants wanting to drive change through organizations. The book contains several examples that make it easy to determine how an organization needs to change in order to be more competitive. In addition, the analogies presented in the book help in building a business case and "selling" it through the organization.
For anyone looking for simple, implementable strategies that will provide great value this is the perfect book.
Mature strategies for almost any company.......2006-03-27
This book demonstrates the power of using information for competitive advantage. If your company can mature beyond the phase where it can gather the data you need, you need to understand what to do with all of it. When I started reading the book I thought of it as a book for product companies -- but after reading it I believe the lessons in here apply to almost any company.
Best read this Decade.......2006-03-20
Shocking Velocity was the simplest book I have ever read on this subject. It is filled with illustrations that distill the essence of complex ideas, and makes them actionable in a unique context. There are stories, quotes, case studies and examples that will keep your attention, drive home the point and inspire you to take actions. It is written for these tough economic times. It doesn't stop at explaining concepts. It brings them to life and helps you apply the ideas in your unique context; applying these ideas can make all the difference between struggling for survival and growing stronger through the tough times by creating superior value. Supply Chain and Change management is not an easy concept to master. The book explains supply chain and change management in a very simple and easily implementable manner. If you have limited time looking and are looking for a supply chain solution Shocking velocity is the right one. Srikanth Srinivas has managed to master these concepts and the book is a pure example of his Brilliance. Srikanth you are the master!!!
Practical Approach.......2006-03-19
Excellent practical guide to supply chain management. Must read to create operational efficiency in your organization.
For many readers, valuable advice but only if...........2006-02-27
At the outset, I share an opinion that there is nothing new, much less "shocking" in any of Srinivas' material but he does support his assertion that "small, focused changes to critical variables [can] result in a big impact on bottom line results." As he promises, his approach guides his reader step-by-step through "everything you need to understand, change, and strike the right balance between critical variables; and how making focused changes to these variables will result in superior Value." Frankly, I could have done without so many capitalized words and exclamation points throughout the narrative. Also, I encountered no "breakthrough concepts." Moreover, I question Srinivas' claim that the changes he recommends will be "entirely self-funding." If these changes are achieved, they will be well worth whatever investment is required; indeed, their ROI could be substantial. Given the cost of this 109-page manual, its own ROI will depend almost entirely on how relevant the material is to each reader's specific cicumstances, and, how effectively Srinivas' recommendations are implemented.
Nonetheless, I still think the material is solid and well-organized. Here's the situation. Srinivas' tells a "story" which features two former schoolmates named Tony and Freddie. Cleverly, Srinivas uses his business narrative to illustrate applications of the aforementioned concepts. For example, how performance measurements can be used to monitor progress and how to create a culture of continuous improvement. The objective, obviously, is to "sustain operational excellence, and stay competitive and agile." It would be a disservice to both Srinivas and to those who read this brief commentary to reveal what happens after Tony and Freddie are by chance reunited.
For whom will this manual be most valuable? In my opinion, owners/CEOs of small-to-midsize organizations which have fewer resources and thus a much lower tolerance for the consequences of waste. I presume to suggest that they read and then re-read Srinivas' manual, carefully absorbing and digesting its material, provide copies to key people and ask that they do the same, then meet to identify and discuss what the given organization's "critical variables are," and, which "small, focused changes" will add substantial value to customers and thus to the organization. Do not expect immediate, "breakthrough" results. (Note Srinivas' use of the word "small.") Be both persistent and patient. Think in terms of a Bunsen burner rather than a sparkler. Forget about "shocking." Make haste slowly. Good luck!
