Hamlet: By William Shakespeare
ASIN: 0521836247 |
Book Description
How is a Shakespearean play transformed when it is directed for the screen? Sarah Hatchuel uses literary criticism, narratology, performance history, psychoanalysis and semiotics to analyze how the plays are fundamentally altered in their screen versions. Instead of providing only play-by-play or film-by-film analysis, the book addresses and defines the main issues of theatre/film aesthetics. Hatchuel also offers guidelines for the study of sequences in Shakespearean adaptations and includes examples from all major films.

Book Description
By the best-selling author of The Metrosexual Guide to Style, an amusing tour of vice and its virtues and the anti-self help book of all time.
In the age of Oprah, Dr. Phil, and countless other self-help disciplinarians, indulging in any kind of pleasurable pastime is on the brink of extinction. But it's not too late to revive those lost pleasures that make life worth living. The Hedonism Handbook can help put the three-martini lunch, the baguette with real butter, the deep tan, the unfiltered cigarette, or the simple act of lying in a hammock under the stars back within our grasp. A tongue-in-cheek, satirical guide to the "good" life, The Hedonism Handbook will help us reclaim it all.
With his characteristic wit, author Michael Flocker combines humorous reviews of historical excesses, suggestions for everyday indulgences, lists of hedonistic icons with famous quotes and earnest warnings about the perils of structured living. Made up of ten worldly wise chapters arranged to form a journey for the reader- a path from the straight-and-narrow into wide-open fields of frivolity- The Hedonism Handbook will help readers master the lost arts of leisure and pleasure. It provides an entertaining, yet (if you're not careful), life-changing read.
Customer Reviews:
Eye opening reading.......2007-09-10
This book really opened my eyes to the leisure and pleasure I was missing in life. Most people assiocate Hedonism with orgies. Not the case. I let a friend borrow this book and she miss placed it. I enjoyed it so much that this is the second time I purchased it. If you think work and money are the only things in life then you MUST get this book. Stop and Smell the roses.
a cure against the rat race ??.......2007-05-13
In particular interesting book for people who work 60h+ per week and have no fun. Or people feeling in a mid life crysis. A gem of a book. Some highlights;
o our obsession with dieting (enjoy food, dress well...feel well)
o the mad race about being number one (yes, there are alternatives)
o review on your deadbed (can be a wack up call for some)
Well written and always with 'littel slap on the head' remarks like; if i want it it must be right or life is short, so i must dress well.
I'm finishing now and enjoy with my partner some care-free time, wine, s... and a cigarette ;-)
Phenomenal Book!.......2007-03-10
I am a sex-book author...so it was GREAT pleasure to read a book with so much Hedonist insight. If nothing else, this book shows us how we often short-change ourselves from a Life of leisure and pleasure. What is also wonderful about this book is that it is a quick-n-easy read, featuring chapters that one can mentally devor in as-little as twenty-minutes! A great book to bring-along for a lunch or give to a friend. Nannette LaRee Hernandez
Short and Sweet.......2006-05-24
The book was short and good hearted, but was more of a brief history of hedonism with a splash of advice. It did have good sugestions but I felt the author repeated himself often. The book could have easily been a third of the length and not have kept any material out. The book gets a three for it's good intentions.
One of the best books I've read.......2006-05-22
When I first got this book I had a minor interest in it, I thought it would just be an amusing read, but I loved it. I've always been ambitious and very goal-orientated but after reading this book I now have a different (better) perspective on things and it's helped me to relax. This book talks about how people like to achieve things just to boost their ego, even if it isn't what they'd really like to be spending their time doing. The title of the book sounds a little shallow and superficial but it's actually quite detailed about the points it makes - giving historical and modern day examples. Even if you don't agree with everything the author suggests (some things are not practical, but most are) it can still be an insightful and entertaining read.

Book Description
In a subtle dance of arid solitude, two southern California deserts come together at Joshua Tree National Park. One is the Colorado Desertan extension of the Sonoran Desertand features natural gardens of ocotillo and cholla cactus. Moving west, the other end of the park engages the Mojave Desert, the special habitat of the Joshua tree as well as some of the most interesting geologic displays found anywhere. After the area became a national monument in 1936, local and regional residents were the primary visitors. As Southern California grew so did park visitation; Joshua Tree now lies within a three-hour drive of more than 18 million people. Elevated from national monument to national park status in 1994, Joshua tree now sees greater numbers of visitors than ever from around the nation and the world. For Deanne Stillman, Joshua Tree is a place of pilgrimage. Her own desert mecca, the park speaks to her in ways that no other place does. With crisp and impassioned narrative she takes the reader through the park's wonders, including a talking cactus, mysterious petroglyphs, and rocks in the shape of the late New York Yankees manager Billy Martin. Stunning photographs by Galen Hunt further accentuate the gorgeous landscape, highlighting the growing need to preserve its beauty. While it explores the park's history, geology, flora, and fauna, Joshua Tree also is a plea to walk lightly on the land, to conserve our natural heritage, and to appreciate places that call out to the soul.

Visions, Visionaries, and Nixon.......2006-11-06
When I got this book I spent the first week enjoying the photographs. I'm glad I devoted some undivided attention for these images. They express a personal involvement with, and a command of the subject matter. They would make a wonderful, gallery show. I was not in a hurry to get to the text, though, probably because I thought I already got the gist of the book from the excerpt in "My California" (Angel City Press), or that it was going to be a bit of a travel log.
What was I thinking!?! I clearly forgot who I was dealing with. This is the author that cracked wide open my emotions with her story of the heroic power of a young woman in the same desert ("Twentynine Palms").
Besides the blind side assault on my status quo, this volume, as most of what Ms. Stillman writes, performs well on several levels. Geology, botany, zoology, humor, history, and politics are woven together with autobiographical anthropology. And, despite the nonfiction genre, the book subtly tracks the opening, conflict, climax, and resolution of a play or novel.
Much of my enjoyment in reading her work is my perception of the recurring theme of putting Pop-Culture, Americana, and civilization in context. A kind of Grand Unification Theory. All political debate prompted by the biting, well supported commentary seems welcome in this Big Picture. And, Baseball is more than just a metaphor.
This book does satisfy the nature enthusiast's desire for the must see, and might see highlights of the Park, but moreover, it's well crafted, moving, and much larger than it's size suggests.

Tracy Hickman's finest.......2006-10-17
Though Tracy Hickman is better known for his Dragonlance line, this was probably his finest work.
It combines I3-I5 and takes about 7 days to complete, so be warned it's an epic. It also doesn't lend itself to come back and continue in a few years ( in character life) but it could be done.
It takes place in the Raurin desert in southern Faerun but could be placed in any desert.
It especially excels in atmosphere, lost sunken cities, ancient magic, and maybe I was lucky with an excellent DM but you really feel like you're in a desolate desert solving a long lost mystery.
The module combines roleplay, hack and slash and puzzle elements but mainly it's the atmosphere that transforms you.
great!.......2004-10-06
Excellent adventure! I played it once 20 years ago and I still can remember most of the details. As far as www.rpgnow.com is concerned - I tried to download it, and the only result was that I lost my money (OK, not much), my time (much more - I tried to download it THREE times!) and my temper (a lot!). Beware!! You can maybe download it, but You can not save it on Your disc, You can not print it and You can not open it! After all of this I asked to be reimbursed and they didn't even bother to answer to my mails. As far as I am concerned I will wait for a better price on amazon.com - the downloads I am done with. For always!
The most AMAZING adventure of all!.......2004-07-16
Desert of Desolation is probably the BEST Forgotten Realms adventure ever to be made, together with Ruins of Zhentil Keep, Curse of the Azure Bonds, and Ruins of Myth Drannor! It refers to the Raurin desert, near Mulhorand the land of the Pharaohs, and a quest to retrieve a set of artifacts, which have been scattered across the vast desert and lie hidden inside pyramids (tombs), protected by powerful and very evil denizens.
Ranging from background history, to city and social descriptions, to important people and characters (NPC's), to adventure hooks and encounter tables, to magical items and artifacts, to the respective gods and monsters, this module has it all and more.
It is a quest of epic proportions, a campaign really, so a lot of time is needed to go from beginning to end (expect your characters to rise several levels by the time it's over). Nevertheless, one can easily run many of the adventures separately so as to make single sessions out of it.
As a result, I have had endless hours of gaming enjoyment playing on material presented within the pages of the Desert of Desolation module!
For other FR references/adventures, I recommend: the Old Empires accessory on Chessenta, Mulhorand, and Unther, the Dreams of Red Wizards accessory on Thay, the Pirates of the Fallen Stars, Moonsea, Dwarves Deep, and Draconimicon accessories (they are Second Edition AD&D, out of print and it will take a bit of searching, but it's well worth it).
Also recommended, the Third Edition Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, which even though is quite expensive, is still very useful to all FR fans!
In short, if you have love dungeon crawling, pyramids, mummies, and a good challenge, try and get your hands on a copy of Desert of Desolation. It's GREAT! You will not regret it!
it's downloadable!!!.......2004-04-18
all the old goodies and many new ones are now avaibale for download at http://www.rpgnow.com !! go get 'em!!!!

Truly Astounding.......2000-11-21
This is, in my opinion, the best module I have ever played. It has everything from dungeon crawls to overland treks and memorable characters. The plot is wonderfully thought out and gameplay is neither boring or inactive. If you can get your hands on it, do so it is well worth the money.
