Customer Reviews:
Fills a gap in cinema technique books.......2006-04-08
The book fills a gap in cinema technique literature by knowledgeably detailing that producers impact creative as well as business aspects of films. The director worship/auteur theory crowd may disagree, but as "The Producers" points out films require many creative people to make (actors, writers, directors, producers, costume designers, etc), unlike a painting that is produced by one artist.
There are lots of interesting anecdotes. In a chapter about British producers Duncan Kenworthy and Andrew Macdonald, the book reveals that hit film "Notting Hill" went through seven pre-release research screenings in the U.S. where the producers observed that audiences laughed so long at some junctures that they missed the next funny line. So they had the film re-edited to fix this problem and improve the creative result. One of many fascinating tidbits is that 112 titles were considered for "Four Weddings and a Funeral" including: "The Pleasures of Merely Circulating" and "Lots of Weddings, Some Sex and a Cup of Tea."
The book goes deeper than mere production. For example, Michael Douglas ("One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest") spends on average 5 years developing properties before they actually are filmed.
Producers present many depreciating descriptions of their jobs such as being similar to hotel management dealing with a revolving bunch of oddballs, always dealing with unexpected negatives during production, production is just the visible tip of a big iceberg that is a film and producing is akin to standing around in mud all day. The author injects humor nicely musing, for example, drought stricken regions should hire a film production to shoot outdoors because whenever a film crew arrives it seems to start raining.
The text has an obvious British in texture (petrol stations, lorries referring to trucks, etc.) and the sensibility seems British-European in my view (I'm an American who has covered movies globally as a business journalist/analyst for 25 years). END

Book Description
Chuck Palahniuk’s world has always been, well, different from yours and mine. In his first collection of nonfiction, Chuck Palahniuk brings us into this world, and gives us a glimpse of what inspires his fiction.
At the Rock Creek Lodge Testicle Festival in Missoula, Montana, average people perform public sex acts on an outdoor stage. In a mansion once occupied by The Rolling Stones, Marilyn Manson reads his own Tarot cards and talks sweetly to his beautiful actress girlfriend. Across the country, men build their own full-size castles and rocketships that will send them into space. Palahniuk himself experiments with steroids, works on an assembly line by day and as a hospice volunteer by night, and experiences the brutal murder of his father by a white supremacist. With this new direction, Chuck Palahniuk has proven he can do anything.
Customer Reviews:
Some stories are slow, but overall worth it........2007-09-09
Many other reviewers have noted that some of the stories in this book are slow and dry. The drawn out descriptions of the castle builders immediately comes to mind, as does the personal story of Juliette Lewis. But overall this is a worthwhile look into the mind and life of one of the best authors of our time. I feel like I know Chuck Palahniuk on a more personal level now, and that's what I was hoping for. I find him a fascinating man, someone I would love to sit down for coffee with. With that desire in mind, I am very happy I waded through this book.
chuck feeling lazy.......2007-08-03
this is by far the worst book he has written, and i'm actually glad that he apologized for its lack of creativity and thrown-togetherness in the actual book.
Chuck as we haven't seen him.......2007-07-27
The title of this book is very accurate. a lot of it seems as though it must be fictional.
I am an avid reader of all of Palahniuk's novels, so not only was the subject matter a bit different, but the format (short story) was also a change - he pulls it off effortlessly, though.
A good book.......2007-05-15
A composite of real world odditities, experiences and interviews. Different than his novels, but interesting.
boring and lazy.......2007-04-26
I became a fan of Palahniuk when I read, Choke, one of the funniest books I've ever come across. Then reading "Survivor" furthered my affection for this author, however after reading the synopsis' of most of his other works I just couldn't find myself willing or interested enough to pick up said other works.
Stranger than Fiction did spark my interested and I was dupped into reading the majority of this trash, oddly enough, none of which is stranger than fiction.

Book Description
From the bestselling author of Fight Club and Diary, a collection of essays and journalistic pieces that prove that real life has imagination beaten cold in the strangeness and wonder departments
Chuck Palahniuk’s world has always been, well, different from yours and mine. The pieces that comprise Stranger Than Fiction, his first nonfiction collection, prove just how different, in ways both highly entertaining and deeply unsettling. Encounters with alternative culture heroes Marilyn Manson and Juliette Lewis; the peculiar wages of fame attendant on the big budget film production of the movie Fight Club; life as an assembly-line drive train installer by day, hospice volunteer driver by night; the really peculiar lives of submariners; the really violent world (and mangled ears) of college wrestlers; the underground world of iron-pumping anabolic steroid gobblers; the immensely upsetting circumstances of his father’s murder and the trial of his killer—each essay or vignette offers a unique facet of existence as lived in and/or observed by one of our most flagrantly daring and original literary talents.

Intriguing stories, brought to you by the slightly warped mind of Chuck Palahniuk .......2006-10-30
This is a collection of non-fictional short stories about average people doing strange things. I can hear you whispering in my ear, "what kind of strange things"? Well, let me tell you that first, you need a breath mint and secondly you spit a little when you whisper. Despite the wet ear and lingering smell of spinach, I'm talking about the kind of odd things that friends tell you about over and over again after a few beers or half a bottle of wine because it is there best and possibly only story worth telling that they have.
These short stories are about modern men who build castles in Oregon and Idaho, stories about drunken rednecks crashing two story wheat threshers into each other in a demolition derby in Lind Washington, stories about public nudity and sex in Bozeman Montana, stories about working in a hospice and being there when people die, stories about shrunken testicles and the pump of steroids, stories about working on an assembly line and trying to be an author, stories that are essentially as American as apple pie but without the sugar and ice cream.
So, if you're interested in a few intriguing stories, brought to you by the slightly warped mind of Chuck Palahniuk author of "Fight Club", take a look at "Stranger Than Fiction".
A medley of stories, some hit the mark better than the rest.......2005-10-01
When Palahniuk goes on book tours, he often tells a smattering of true-life stories that he heard from his fans, all items that are indeed stranger than fiction. From a man who writes fiction that is often beyond belief, it is interesting to see the true-life tales that pass the Palahniuk strangeness test.
The book starts out with a bang, an opening chapter that provides the reader a voyeuristic field trip into a sex festival. From there, however, Palahniuk doesn't always maintain the momentum. Sometimes it appears as if he's just a bored reporter scribbling down facts, not trying to weave a compelling tale. Several of the stories didn't keep my interest at all, but there is enough good material in here to make the book a worthwhile read.
Palahniuk fans should give it a shot, but don't expect to be blown away.
Another unique piece of work .......2005-07-10
Plot: N/A
Writing Excellent
Pace: Fast
It's a bunch of short stories about real people and events in his life. Some are sad, some are funny, and some are bizarre. The best stories are about the author, his family, and his two weight lifting buddies. The slowest and longest are the combine derby and castle building. Cut those two stories out and the book would be even better. It's worth reading if you want a change of pace from your typical fiction. Grab a little non-fiction that won't bore you.
Fascinating.......2005-05-24
I had never read Palahniuk and "Fight Club" definitely isn't my thing. Yet I was lured by true anecdotes--who can resist a really strange story? This collection introduced me to a an intriguing man and brilliant writer.
The best thing about this collection is that it takes the reader into odd situations and intimate settings that he/she would probably never experience otherwise. Palahniuk takes us with him as he witnesses odd things such as The Rock Creek Lodge Testicle Festival, hangs out with Marilyn Manson, and reveals his "life as a dog." The book also dives into the personal world of Palahniuk--his past, friendships, thought processes, and life before, during, and after the movie "Fight Club." If you enjoyed the movie or any of other Palahniuk's works, "Stranger Than Fiction" is nearly essential to getting to know the man behind it all. He is apparently a curious person with a keen sociological and psychological insight...and he has a distinct sense of humor!
I recommend this book to every writer...actual or aspiring. A running theme in these stories is the practice of writing. How stories come about, take shape, and draw on other stories. It expresses the connection between writing and life, life and fiction, and how these play off eachother. If you write, you will be enthralled by the introduction to the collection alone...and it only gets better from there.
As others have said in their reviews, this collection does contain a few duds. But it's the many fabulous pieces that make your time more than worthwhile. I learned alot of very interesting things and this book contains stories for varied interests. This book made me gasp, smirk, nearly cry, and laugh out loud. The stories stay with you. I am telling everyone about this book: you owe it to yourself to atleast thumb through it.
Better Than I Expected!.......2005-05-23
These stories reveal a more personal side of Palahniuk that you may not have even realized was there. They're hopeful, inspirational, and as always, completely outrageous. These are not the typical quasi-horror stories Chuck has written in the past. But they are excellent stories, and I applaud Chuck for trying something new. I think he did an amazing job with it, and if you like Palahniuk at all, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Along with The Losers' Club (Complete Restored Edition) by Richard Perez, Stranger Than Fiction: True Stories is my favorite Amazon purchase so far this year!

Stranger than Fiction: True Stories by Chuck Palahniuk.......2007-03-08
This is, in fact, one of the strangest books I have ever read -- also one of the funniest and most endearing. I thought about it for weeks and then sent it to several friends.
"SELECTIONS from" .......2005-08-10
yeah... i guess i need to be better at reading the details. this audio CD is NOT the entire book. chuck is my current favorite contemporary writer... bar none.
i have all of his books... and have read several of them several times. this was the first time i have made an audio CD purchase of a Palaniuk book. i was soon to be staring at a ten hour drive through boring territory and figured this would be the coolest audio book i had ever experienced. as a wrestling coach, i was particularly wanting to hear the story about amateur wrestling/wrestlers.
and that is my main beef with the audio book. it is SELECTIONS from the book. the story i was anticipating was not in the audio CD at all... period. when it came to the end i was pretty disappointed. i never did go back to check which of the others didn't appear in the audio book.
i also knew this was NOT a work of fiction in the chuckstyle i am so accustomed to. that is cook. i liked it. the stories are good and the format is fresh and interesting.
bottom line... don't buy the audio CD if you want every last story. therefore, as an audio CD... i had to give this a *3*. if this were a review of the complete book, i am sure it would be a *4* at least. (i would rate his others a *5* in case that helps you) i also ordered Haunted at the same time (old school paper style, btw) and can't wait to get into it.

Book Description
First held in 1927, and staged periodically over the next 30 years, the Mille Miglia ("thousand miles") road race was one of the greatest of all motorsport events. It attracted a vast number of entries, from amateur drivers in family cars as well as the great drivers and marques. Published to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the last race, this fascinating book recreates the races, the atmosphere, the politics, the technical changes – even the weather and road surfaces.
Customer Reviews:
Magic of the Mille Miglia.......2007-06-02
Mr. Pritchard always writes a good book, with a wealth of detail. This book is no exception and goes into great detail regarding the history of the Mille Miglia, the cars which participated in it, and the major drivers. Almost all of the photos are ones that I have not previously seen, and there are a great many of them.
You will not find in-depth details of the cars here, and most of the photos are action shots from the races. This is not the place to look for inforamtion on the type of steering on a 1933 Alfa Romeo, or the chassis layout on a Mercedes 300 SLR. However, if you didn't know that Isetta ran their bubble-cars here in 1954 but are longing to know the details, or if you want to read A.F.P. Fane's post-race report to the BMW factory regarding the 328 he ran in 1938, or if you want to know the course layout of the 1932 race, this is the book for you.
I highly recommend this book for the racing historian. Technophiles or those interested in model car building will find it less attractive, although it does have much interesting information I have not seen elsewhere. I enjoyed it very much and recommend it highly.

Not too shabby.......2007-01-21
This is the book which launched the career of Herbert Becker but it is not as good as the newer ones.
A waste of money.......2005-08-19
You won't find all the secrets of magic in this book, it's more of a David Copperfield advertisement, with a hole chapter of his credits, along with some generic secrets that you can find in library books.
The Ultimate Rip-Off !!!.......1998-09-21
Who on earth is Mr. Becker?? He pretends to be a magician. To me he looks more like somebody who had access to some of these secrets but never bother verify them. The secret of the water levitation is obviously stupid. probably Mr. Becker did not have enough money to buy the plans from a real magician, so he invented. A book for voyeurs with nothing better to do in their lives. Could be done so much better. And we are killing forests to print that ?????
What is the point !!.......1998-07-12
Do you believe that anybody once fooled by a Magic trick should be allowed to wtite a book once he believes he worked out the secret ? Don't encourage this type a behaviour ! Don't waste your money !!! It is badly written. The drawings are of very bad quality. And what about this chapter on David Copperfield ? What is the point !!!
Pseudo explanations of popular illusions !.......1998-07-12
Mr. Becker offer us a collection of inept so called secrets of popular illusions. With the exception of one or two sections, the drawings are of poor quality and the secrets are unworkable. The chapter on David Copperfield is stupid. Who is Mr. Becker trying to fool. Generally badly written. Fail to explain the true beauty of the art of magic. Not recommended. Suggest instead any book by Mark Wilson or in the Dover collection.

The Malamud story.......2006-02-08
There is a low- key quality to the Malamud story. It often makes it ways quietly , at times with a Yiddish -English voice. A Malamud story can often make you smile, and has little perceptions and ironies. But it can also have grotesqueries in it, of incident or character. A Malamud story is always seeking somehow the heart of the human, and this it often finds in varieties of sadness and disappointment. Illusions, and dreams often turn reality into unexpected meetings. In Malamud 's most famous story, "The Magic Barrel" there is a picture of how poor and strained human hearts in longing , hope and fail.
Book Description
For Hank, fourth grade does not start out on the right foot. First of all, he gets called to the principal's office on the very first day of school. Then the first assignment his teacher gives him is to write five paragraphs on "What You Did This Summer." Hank is terrified-writing one good sentence is hard for him, so how in the world is he going to write five whole paragraphs? Hank comes up with a plan: instead of writing what he did on vacation, he'll show what he did. But when Hank's "living essay" becomes a living disaster, he finds himself in detention. Strangely enough, however, detention ends up becoming a turning point in his life.
Customer Reviews:
Hooray for Hank Z.......2007-03-25
I discovered Hank Zipzer while watching Henry Winkler doing an interview. He mentioned that one of the reasons he had written the books was because he wanted to explain what life was like for a student who learned in a different way from everyone else. It worked. The book is funny, touching, and true. Hank is a "real" boy. I am currently reading it aloud to my grandson, who is 9, who has some learning disabilities of his own. The story and the characters provide great opportunites for talking about "coping" with problems.
An Excellent Series--Even Better on Audiotape!.......2006-07-21
This series is wonderful! While we enjoyed reading each of the books in this series, EVEN BETTER was listening to Henry Winkler read them aloud on the audio version.
My two sons (ages 8 and 11) and I (age 40) were laughing out loud as we listened. Like many other reviewers, we recognized ourselves in Hank.
One of the best ones is _I Got a D in Salami_, the third one.
From a future educator - what a wonderfully written book!.......2006-03-09
I was required to read this book for my college class - "Assessment & Identification of Students with Exceptionalities." We were required to read the book, and then assess Hank for a learning disability. This book was VERY well written, AND it turns out it takes place at MY elementary school!!!
I would recommend this book to anyone. It is very insightful into how a child with a learning disability might feel in school, and even for those who are not interested in that sort of thing, it is just an enjoyable book! I read it in one afternoon, it was just very entertaining! Once I am professionally teaching, I will definitely have my students read this book!
Naigara Falle or Does it?.......2006-01-25
I recommend Niagara Falls or does it to every one because it will have you laughing out loud. This book is about three kids, Hank, Ashley, and Frankie. They were told to write about their summer vacation, Hank decided to make a model in stead. His friends help him make the model of Niagara Falls it even had running water. The all sorts of staff happen in the process of making the model.
The characters in this book are vary funny. Hank is fun and has some goofy ideas. Ashley can tie a cherry stem with her tong! Frankie loves magic and is vary well at it. All these characters are vary important to the story.
This book is about friends, and goofing up. Ashley, Hank, and Frankie are best friends. They help each other out. Like in this book the help Hank make the model of Niagara Falls. They even help him get it to school. Then it goes wild.
Frankie, Ashley, and Hank live in New York City and live in the same apartment. They have a club house in the basement of the apartment. That is were they made the model. They go there to talk and play games. The setting matches the store vary well.
You should read this book because it is vary fun and you will have you leafing. The characters are funny. The theme is funny also. This is why you should read this book.
Niagara Falls or Does It? (Hank Ziper).......2005-11-27
It's an awesome book. I think everyone should read it. I liked how Hank gets into trouble. I like Hanks ideas. Hank is a very smart person.

Customer Reviews:
Just what I would expect from the CIA.......2006-02-22
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve the table service in their establishment. Well thought out and laid out. I really enjoyed the history aspect of the book. It was an interesting read and a very helpful manual.
what a waste of money.......2005-10-01
A big disappointment from a distinguished institute like the Culinary Institute of America. A little book with even less info. Headings with a paragraph or two will not help menager or even servers keep customers coming. This book needs a more explanations and examples - give incites to experiences.
Not a bad little book, especially if you know service........2001-09-11
As someone that prides themself on customer satisfaction, I have to say this was not a bad little book. A lot is common sense, but some would learn from this. People like to be taken care of from start to finish in any industry and this is a good reminder in service.
