Book Description
Post-Punk Cinema is the first book to examine a new breed of film that is indebted to the punk spirit of experimentation, do-it-yourself ethos, and an uneasy, often defiant relationship with the mainstream. An array of established and emerging scholars trace and map the contours of new punk cinema, from its roots in neorealism and the French New Wave, to its flowering in the work of Lars von Trier and the Dogma 95 movement. Subsequent chapters explore the potentially democratic and even anarchic forces of digital filmmaking, the influences of hypertext and other new media, the increased role of the viewer in arranging and manipulating the chronology of a film, and the role of new punk cinema in plotting a course beyond the postmodern. The book examines a range of films, including The Blair Witch Project, Time Code, Run Lola Run, Memento, The Celebration, Gummo, and Requiem for a Dream.

Informative and Entertaining.......2005-09-21
Every time I pick up this book, I find a passage I want to share with someone. It's like a textbook without the cost. If you've ever met me in an airport, I've probably already recommended this book to you.
Overview of the odder religious groups.......2005-04-25
Argh I wasn't sure whether to give this book a 3 or a 4...but since I think it is worth reading through once and going back occasionally to read some parts again...I'll make it a 4...seriously it's a close call.
This book goes over the basics concerning several of the odder religious groups (Amish, Oneida, Gypsies, Unitarian Universalists/religious atheists, Christian Science, The Hasidim, Father Divine, Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses).
The most interesting sections by far were on the Amish, Oneida, Father Divine, Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses.
The sections on the Christian Science, Gypsies, Hasidim were boring, and man the section on Unitarian Universalists was downright irritating (for God's sake what kind of form of idiocy is it to become a religious atheist).
This book is a great resource in that it goes over the basic doctines and structure of these different cults (in depth) from the vantage point of disinterested observer. In the process you really learn which of your preconceived ideas concerning these groups were right and which weren't. Again it's great for just understanding these groups.
extraordinary.......2000-06-16
extraordinary groups offers the reader an extraordinary view into some of America's most avoidant and little known religions. Several of the groups portrayed by the authors are seldom accessible to the general population. For instance, rarely is there truly a detailed account of the Gypsy movement as striking as the one in this book. Also, for the religious historian the analysis of the Father Divine movement is both intriguing and fascinating, in addition, this is a historical movement that few Afro-Americans are even aware existed. Thanks Zellner for a great read!
This is a well written, easily read basic sociology book........1998-12-12
It covers eight diverse associational groups in America. The groups that Kephart/Zellner chose to include are The Old Order Amish; The Oneida Community; The Gypsies; The Church of Christ, Scientist; The Hasidim; The Father Divine Movement; The Mormons and The Jehovah Witnesses. In the introduction, they state one of the primary reasons for choosing these eight subcultures is because "they illustrate major sociological principles in concrete form." (page 1) Another reason is the diversity of each of the groups. They state some of the differences as being economic, rural versus urban, and proselytizing versus self-growth sects. The third reason they give is "simply that they are interesting." (page 3) Extraordinary Groups fulfills each of these reasons. In addition, when Kephart/Zellner discusses a new sociological term they give a definition and then an example from the current group being discussed. The reader can then relate the term to actual situations. This technique furthers the reader's understanding of sometimes-difficult sociological concepts. Kephart/Zellner sites and recommends further reading material for each chapter in a Selected Readings section. I enjoyed reading about each of these groups.

Book Description
The world's best Grandmasters have deployed the Scandinavian Defense with great success-and now every player can. Champion and prolific author James Plaskett explains how to use the defense and its variations (including the Icelandic Gambit), discusses the schemes played by such superstars as Vishy Anand in his World Cup Championship against Gary Kasparov, and shows how Black can employ the Scandinavian in a radically different middlegame.
Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing.......2007-07-22
This book is basically a collection of games played in the Scandinavian Defence, VERY poorly annotated by the author. Don't expect to learn anything from the author's comments to these games. No insights about what's going on, no discussion of ideas or plans for either side. And besides that, the book is poorly organized, as sub-variations within the main lines are hard to follow. Don't waste your money.
I recommend John Emms' book instead.
A useful guide to the Scandinavian Defence.......2005-06-09
If you play the Scandinavian Defence for Black, you ought to get copies of the major recent books on the subject, and that includes this one. But if you want just one repertoire book on the Scandinavian, I'd recommend getting the one by Emms instead. Both books have plenty of good material. But the one by Emms has more recent games, and Emms comes up with more suggestions for Black in what I feel are some key lines.
After 1 e4 d5, White can play 2 e5, 2 Nc3, 2 Nf3, 2 d4, or, of course, 2 dxe5. Few books spend much time on 2 e5. Plaskett, to his credit, does spend three pages on 2 Nc3. I think a repertoire book on the Scandinavian ought to say something about 2 Nf3 and 2 d4, but neither Plaskett nor Emms give these moves any real space.
When White plays 2 exd5, White can play 2...Qxd5 or 2...Nf6. I play the latter move. But both Emms and Plaskett spend plenty of space on 2...Qxd5. Their emphases are different, though! After 3 Nc3 (both books mention 3 d4 as well), Plaskett has 8 pages on 3...Qd8, 11 pages on 3...Qe5+, only 21 pages on 3...Qa5, and 51 pages on 3...Qd6. Emms has 2 pages on 3...Qd8, 3 pages on 3...Qe5+, 74 pages on 3...Qa5, and only 9 pages on 3...Qd6. By the way, if you want to play 3...Qd6 you may want to get the book on it by Michael Melts as well.
Of course, you may play what I think is the objectively stronger move, 2...Nf6. Both Plaskett and Emms have some good material on 3 Bb5+. But the two moves you'll generally face are 3 d4 and 3 c4.
3 d4 may be the strongest White move. Black can play 3...Nxd5, the main line, and come under some strong White pressure. Or Black can try the possibly unsound Portuguese Variation, 3...Bg4. Plaskett has 38 pages on the Portuguese, and if you play it, I think you may want to get Selby Anderson's book on it as well. However, I don't play the Portuguese, and I think Emms has better advice on how to survive in the 3...Nxd5 lines.
3 c4 is the other main White try. It tends to transpose into the Panov-Botvinnik attack against the Caro-Kann. But Plaskett lets us down by not covering the Panov at all, while Emms at least has an interesting recommendation for Black after 3 c4 c6 4 d4 cxd5 5 Nc3 e6 6 Nf3 Bb4.
I prefer not to defend against the Panov-Botvinnik attack, and I generally prefer the move ...e6 to ...c6, so I play the Icelandic Gambit (1 e4 d5 2 exd5 Nf6 3 c4 e6). Plaskett spends 15 pages on this, while Emms has only 8 pages, but I prefer Emms' treatment. Both Plaskett and Emms agree that 4 dxe6 Bxe6 5 Nf3 is the most dangerous try for White. But while Plaskett simply recommends avoiding the gambit with Black, Emms at least tries to offer a playable line with Black, namely 5...Qe7 6 Qe2 Nc6 7 d4 Bg4. That's what I think is best. Surprisingly, neither Plaskett nor Emms look at the line Andrew Martin recommends in "Secret Weapons," namely 5...c5 6 d4 cxd4 7 Nxd4 Bc5 8 Be3 Qb6.
Still, I like this book and I enjoyed the writing style of the author.
Book Description
While Scandinavia's 'Viking Age' is one of the most studied aspects of early medieval history, much less has been published about the centuries which followed. Yet the armies of Sweden, Norway and Denmark offer fascinating differences from the rest of medieval Western Europe, both in their organisation and their war gear. This second of two books covers the period which saw both expansion in the Baltic, and long wars born of the attempt to bring Scandinavia under a single monarchy - the Union of Kalmar. In the North, as elsewhere, the perfection of plate armour could not prevent the steady decline in the importance of the 15th century mounted knight in favour of the well armed infantryman.

More Scandinavian Warriors.......2007-04-07
A fine introduction and an essential companion for the first volume and for the Baltic Crusades title; usual awesome plates.
An odd account of medieval Scandinavian armies.......2006-07-31
This second volume from Osprey on medieval Scandinavian armies deals with the time-period 1300-1500, but like the first volume it's sadly a let down, certainly it's not mr Nicolle's best effort. The photos are undeniably good, showing surviving weaponry, effegies and painting from Scandinavian countries. The text however leaves much to ask for, as it's too short to properly cover the major wars and campaigns fought in Scandinavia during these two centuries. The result is a book providing a quite brief description of common standard arms and armour used throughout late medieval Europe: Actually this would apply for any medieval army at that time. Nicolle could just as much have put the exact same information in a book on late medieval german or french armies: the Scandinavian perspective is unfortunatly pretty absent. Then there's the weird and annoying focus on Greenland in the chronology, as Greenland at the time was a very small, remote nordic settlement with no political and especially no military significance whatsoever! Very odd indeed, especially as much, much more important events in Scandinavia are ignored in the very same text... Thus, the reader will get a quite odd, at best extremely superficial and incomplete account of warfare and politics in late medieval Scandinavia.
The illustrations by Angus McBride are wonderfully painted, and compared to the plates in volume 1 they are somewhat better researched, although I wouldn't say they accurately represent the appearance medieval Scandinavian fighting men. Plates B and C however, showing the Danes fighting the Gotland peasants at Visby in 1361, are completely inaccurate, featuring heavily armoured peasant soldiers (in reality excavations at the battlefield show us that the Gotland militia at Visby - a last desperate stand by the reserve forces - comprised of old men and young boys, badly armed and armoured). The appearance of the Saami (called "Lapps" in this volume) in plate H is also highly speculative, and actually looks nothing like the later saami costume it's supposed to be based on according to the plate-commentary.
I give this book 2 stars as it's somewhat useful and the photographies are interesting. But I'd highly suggest a reader seriously interested in the topic to check additional litterature to get a more balanced account of wars, battles, politics and warfare in late medieval Scandinavia

Customer Reviews:
Great guide for novice warriors........2006-09-23
New to the not-so-glamorous world of business travel? Heard tales from other women travelers that curl your hair? This book tells it straight - all the things you need to know to navigate the world of travel agents, hotel clerks, and restaurant menus. She tells the stories and dispels the myths in great style. Helpful sections include finding inexpensive travel, staying fit on the road, and things to watch for to stay safe in a strange city. Her stories are well-told, and the tips are excellent - a thoroughly enjoyable book.
As a road warrior for over ten years, I found that everything she says in the book is absolutely accurate. I found myself nodding over many of her illustrative stories, thinking, "yes, that happened to me in the Sheraton in Phildelphia." And that, ultimately, was the disappointment for me. I learned nothing new. The sections on living long-term in a strange city read as though she had always stayed in large cities for a week or less - it's different when you spend 6 months living in a Comfort Inn in Boulder, Colorado.
However, I have recommended this book for all my colleagues who are new to the road (men and women - the guys can learn a lot from this as well!), I think there's another book she needs to write for the more experienced traveler.

Great ideas and tips for all travelers!.......2005-05-26
I just got back from holiday in Ireland. On the return flight, I experienced the excruciating pain that is a head cold, mixed with the pressure adjustment on the plane. I had no idea what to do, having never felt that way before! When I got home, a friend handed me this book, and almost immediately in flipping through it I landed to the pages on how to battle a head cold, leading up to - and during a flight. If only I'd had this book before my trip! An added bonus to this book is that it comes with tips and checklists. I feel better prepared for my next trip and wonder how I travelled without it!
My only request: When can we expect the international version?
Insightful and helpful resource!.......2005-05-26
After reading Woman Road Warrior I hope to simplify my next travel adventure with the insightful ideas for productivity and success on the road. The tips and checklists were just what I needed to get myself ready and rolling along. Even more information is available on the WomanRoadWarrior.com website.
Travel advice at its best! .......2005-05-26
