If you need to understand Maya.......2004-09-15
It's a good book to use as a reference, but not to learn how to use Maya for modeling and animation as a professional. If you need a place to search about 'how does a specific tool work', this is gonna be a nice choice.
If you want to learn how to use Maya for real jobs, there are others books that would help you with the learning process, try Maya 5 Fundamentals or Maya 6 Foundation.
Good for reference BAD for tutorial.......2004-08-18
With a limited budget i thought this was the best buy around. Think again! While this book does have excellent step by step picture references (as is admiringly the case in the Visual QuickStart series) it has no real projects or TASKS to get ones teeth into and actually CREATE.
So, bottom line for me (completely new to 3D and Maya) is i want a book that is task-based - not just a glossary of 'how-to's'.
I will return this book and keep looking. Best wishes narrowing down what YOU want!
A great jump start.......2004-07-14
Talk about "get up to speed quick". This book does a great job in skimming the surface of Maya with detailed tutorials and images. The chapters covers everything from Modeling, Lighting, Rendering and Dynamics. I worked with 3D MAX before and decided to make the switch to Maya, I am a strong customer to the Visual QuickStart Guide series and this book reinforces my decision. If you wanted to start using Maya quick, This is the book for you. I will be buying more books from this author in the future.
Slightly updated but with several mistakes........2004-02-09
This book is a mere revised version of the previous volume. It has several places in the book that still refers to things in Maya 4.5 that have changes in 5. It is still a good refernce book even if some of the web links no longer work.
This book is oke.......2003-11-15
As we all know Maya offers endless possibilities for creating virtually anything in 3D. However, since onces imagination is the only limiting factor, you need a book that is not only helpfull in learning Maya but is also inspiring enough to get you going. I personally find this book helpfull in learning Maya, but it doesn't tell you anyting about how to create really good animations. Probably because it would extend the context of what this book intends to be: a handbook. So for quick reference, this book might be helpfull, but then so is the helpserver which comes with Maya...

More L Word Please.......2006-12-25
As a big fan of the show it was great to have a book released to show behind the scenes and go into more depth with the shows characters and the actresses that portay them.
A Great Read.......2006-07-12
This book is a must have for any fan of "The L Word." I finished the book within a couple of days. It was that good. The info on the cast is great and it is good to go back and read summaries on the first two seasons. The pictures are awesome. All in all, definitely a good read.
L is for Loaded with Good Stuff.......2006-03-03
This book is unputdownable. The character profiles are keenly observed, and reading the episode guide is as breathless and fun as discussing the episode with your friends, except that this author has the inside track. And then we get inside dirt from the actors and the cast themselves!! The book is a total blast. Can't wait 'til they add season three.

Best Rook Endgame Book.......2005-01-05
This is a superb book. It's short easy to digest and contains just the right amount of detail. IT looks after key positions like Lucena and Philidor but also goes into the plans for
several key rook endings. Emms Survival guide to rook endings is more comprehensive but i much prefer this book
Variations or Ideas?.......1999-12-20
This book will not waste time on hundreds upon hundreds of tedious Rook and Pawn positions and variations. It will, however, give you the ideas on how to play these types of endings. Ideas are easier to memorize than variations - with the right idea, the correct variation will not be so hard to find. It even teaches how to play the "inferior" side of a rook ending. This book helped me improve not only my endgame play but also enhanced my game overall. Best buy for the buck. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
The most common of endings clearly explained!!.......1999-09-16
This book helped me to understand rook & pawn endgames like no other before it. I had previously read Pandolfini's Endgame Course, Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals, Tarrasch's Game of Chess, and Reassess Your Chess (which has a few pages on the subject). These are all good books. But I never fully comprehended rook endings until I read this book. I finally understand the Lucena & Philidor positions and Why They Are So Important. And much more... This book is cheap, short (only 70 pages), and chock full of extremely useful information. I am a strong B player and just beat my first expert due to this book!
Book Description
Victor Korchnoi, one of the greatest experts in the field of rook endings, now documents his own experiences in tournament play. His main purpose is to inspire readers with a deep interest in rook endings, and he promises that anyone who thoroughly masters the given material will raise his Elo rating by 100 points or more!
Customer Reviews:
Essential reading if you play in chess tournaments!.......2007-02-06
Rook endings are not always simple. Try to study rook endings with 7 (4x3) or more pawns and you'll see my point of view. It deserves a lot of experience to play them well. Korchnoi's mastery in these kind of endings and his explanations make this book a classic; this is not a book for beginers, though. If you're a newbie try first "Practical Rook Endings" by Mednis (a must-have, great book), "The Survival Guide to Rook Endings" by John Emms, "Starting Out: Rook endgames" by Chris Wards or "A Practical Guide to Rook Endings" by Nikolay Minev. I can't recommend Smyslov and Levenfish's book because it is full of blunders and quite confusing (I have to admit that I lost my time reading it)... Averbach's book is a rarity nowadays and "Encyclopaedia of Chess Endings"(Matanovic et al.,Chess Informant Series) is a pain to read (though helpful if you are a correspondence player)...
For advanced players I would also recommend some general ending software like those of Chess Assistant and Chessbase (specially Dvoretsky's Endgame "Manual" - it could be better named as "Treatise").
Very good book.......2005-10-18
Everyone knows Korchnoi is a fighter. But he's also a good author. I like his work a lot. A very useful book.

This ultimate insider's guide looks at:

Readers will also learn how the job might affect them and their families, how to plan their career and climb the ladder, and even prepare for life after the Bureau. Above all, they'll find out what it takes to succeed-and how to show they've got it.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Overview for FBI Special Agent Applicants.......2007-01-02
I've read several books on the FBI Special Agent career path, and this book is the most informative overall collection of data available. This is the only book I've read that details the specifics of an agent's career path and what to expect during various levels of an agent's career. It also provides excellent preparation for the two Phases of the agent application process, and I highly recommend this book to any person who is about to embark on the lengthy Special Agent application process.
It's a 'must' guide to the complex world of the FBI career........2006-11-07
If you're looking to develop an FBI career, first consult The FBI Career Guide: Inside Information on Getting Chosen for and Succeeding in One of the Toughest, Most Prestigious Jobs in the World. It spells out exactly what the Bureau looks for in candidates, covering how to meet and network with agents, how different FBI forces work, and how to avoid the many common mistakes applicants make. It's a 'must' guide to the complex world of the FBI career.

Complete Informative Guide.......2006-11-06
This book was awesome! It was extremely informative and answered all of my questions. It was a bit of a techincal read but it contains everything from a to z about the fbi.
Educational reading.......2006-10-25
I am a retired FBI Special Agent and find this book very enlightning and also entertaining. It reminds me of my FBI experiences, from Training School through my work in the different Field Offices. If I were a young person interested in Law Enforcement as a career, I would most certainly find this book as a "must" read.
Perfect guide for anyone interested in the FBI.......2006-09-16
I was interested in being a special agent with the FBI before reading this book and after reading it I am even more interested. This book was very good at explaining the application process for the FBI. Also gave info on a wide range of topics from the history of the FBI, to what an agent does. Anyone interested in a career as a special agent should read this for guidance and valuable insight on this career. It was very helpful to me and can help you out as well.

Customer Reviews:
Good summary for the USA.......2004-06-07
Quite a short book, but it's not a huge topic. Oriented towards the forensic science arena in the USA, it doesn't offer any tips for internationalizing its summaries, so the international reader is left with little idea of the differences in the way the field is structured. That said, it does summarize the opportunities available for general criminalists, pathologists, toxicologists, crime scene managers and so on, and gives rough salary, training estimates, brief job descriptions, along with example job advertisements for each section.
For Potential Students.......2003-02-08
This book is for any potential students who wish to explore careers in Forensic Science. I purschased this book out of plain curiosity, and this field of science is truly amazing to practically no end. Forensic Science is a fascinating career to discover, and if you are the type of student who needs constant stimulation then you should read this book.

Amusing. Oddly-aimed, though........2004-11-30
Nancy L. Stair, Choosing a Career in Mortuary Science and the Funeral Industry (Rosen, 2001)
I'm having a problem figuring this book out. I judge the reading level at junior high, which is about where Amazon puts it (listed as "ages 9-12,") but really, doesn't the subject matter seem, well, wrong to you? I'm all for telling kids about the funeral industry, but doesn't it seem like something they'd be more interested in post-puberty, when they get introduced to goth? (Seriously, on one goth/noise mailing list at which I lurked for about nine months, the number of people in school for various funeral industry jobs was staggering.)
Well, one way or the other, Choosing a Career in Mortuary Science and the Funeral Industry is an interesting overview. It's somewhat broader than its title would suggest, also covering some things that go on outside the morgue and the funeral home (e.g., CSI-style forensic science careers), and in a book this short, it's trying to cover one or two too many topics for it to get into anything resembling detail; this is a seriously surface-level overview. It may, however, point kids who are interested in such things into more directed reading, which is never a bad thing.
Still, I'd have liked to see at least a little more detail, especially of the statistical kind. Telling people that the number of jobs available in the industry is supposed to steadily climb at least until 2008 doesn't really count for much if you don't give some numbers as to what's already out there. All well and good if there are positions sitting open now, but if you've got ten graduates for every job...
Worth checking out, but as a primer for those who want to go on to deeper reading in the subject. ** ½
