Cultural study of the feminine role in Am. hymnody.......1998-04-25

Dr. June Hobbs' book is a must-read for anyone interested in the role hymns played in the development of late nineteenth-century American culture. The focus on women as writers, singers, and subjects of various hymns provides clear insight into the way women shaped hymnody for expression of their own spiritual and social insights. Fascinating subject presented by June Hobbs in an insightful as well as enjoyable study. Highly recommended.

Examining constructions of gender, nationalism, and modernity in films produced in China and Japan in the 1920s and early 1930s, this special issue of Camera Obscura is the first collection of feminist research on Asian cinema of the silent period. Actresses emerged for the first time in the Asian public sphere in the late 1910s, making the convention of the female impersonator obsolete and giving human faces to the many social transformations of urban modernity. During this period, filmmaking started to establish itself as a product of mass culture that circulated globally, creating conduits of cultural exchange in which the modern New Woman became a principal figure of currency. In the silent cinemas of China, Japan, and Hollywood, where Asian women appeared as key representations of nativist and orientalist ideology, early women stars became the focus for competing discourses of gender and modernity and played a key role in the construction of modern Asian identity.

The collection includes an essay on the actress Pearl White and how the emergence of the New Woman on Asian screens provoked extensive discussions in the media about the norms of gender and femininity. Hollywood orientalism and Asian nationalism converged in the images of Asian American stars Anna May Wong and Tsuru Aoki, who were criticized by both American and Asian constituencies for transgressing cultural norms. Other essays offer a feminist critique of films by the Japanese directors Yasujiro Ozu, Heinosuke Gosho, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Mikio Naruse, whose work often captured the position of women in a patriarchal system. Trapped between the progressive paradigms of the New Woman and traditional expectations of appropriate gender roles, and between competing notions of Asian modernity, Asian women stars of the silent cinema constitute a dynamic site for feminist film research.

Disappointed.......2007-05-12

I was disappointed in the fact that music to all the songs were not included in the book. The nine songs that are in are good but to leave out the songs with Judas and the High Priests and Jesus and Pilate and Simon Zealots is not right.

JC SuperStar Piano Edition.......2005-10-20

Although this score does not include all the intermittent recitatives and orchestral arrangemtnts, it does offer a good piano transcription of the major songs with words. For anyone wnating to use any of the songs of JCS, this publication is very good.

Good Stuff.......2004-12-28

For the most part, I was pretty impressed with this. There are some problems, most mentioned already. My biggest issue with this is that it doesn't include "Damned For All Time/Blood Money", my favorite song on JCS.

Excellent for playing songs from JCS.......2001-05-26

The songs included in this book are Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Hosanna, Pilate's Dream, Last Supper, Gethsemane, King Herod's Song, and Superstar. A few things should be noted: Firstly, Heaven on their Minds does not include the "all gone sour" last four verses that are used in live productions of jcs. Instead the song is written to fade away. That might present a problem to people performing or using that song for an audition. The last supper only includes the chorus that the apostles sing. Superstar is tuned to a C instead of the original E that is on all of the recordings and live productions. Other than that, all the other keys are the same as you might hear them on cd recordings, 1973 movie, and live productions. Chords are also included for guitar players.

Good book for beginners.......2000-03-27

This book contains the partitures of the songs mentioned in Uppercase in the Editorial's review and the lyrics for all the other songs of this great rock-opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The partitures are written for piano, with chords for guitar and lyrics, and are quite faithful to the original songs. They aren't difficult, so you can play them without too much troubles and remember with pleasure the voices of Yvonne Elliman, Carl Anderson, Ted Neeley and the other artists. This book doesn't give you a complete satisfaction if you are instead looking for a more "seriously" thing, with all the partitures including the instrumental songs.

This book was an extraordinary adventure for me, as I wrote it {and I did write the ENTIRE book} within two years of leaving The New York Times and setting out on a new area, the world of film and film music and rock and rock opera. I was heavily involved for a year working with, advising The Who, Neil Diamond, Rick Nelson, even Lorretta Lynn and Brenda Lee. I had the distinct honor of introducing Elton John to the U.S. in his first appearances in New York and Philadelphia. Then came my time as manager of artist relations for MCA, and meeting Tim Rice, who's been a friend since, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who's been an acquaintance since (I'm sure he has some friends, I just don't know that many of them, as they tend to be royalty or very upper class British). I was there with them from one of their first visits to the U.S., when they had very little money and actually had to stay in my apartment, to the debut of their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar and on to the movie and their other works, such as Evita, Chess, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, etc.

I consider myself so very blessed to have been in the "right" place at the "right" time and to have participated in their/these lives and careers.

And if it had not been for Loretta, I would never have renewed my interest in Patsy Cline and written so often of her.

Rock Opera:The Creation of Jesus Christ Superstar is worth the price if only for the incredible photo gallery. Of course, I hope you find the writing interesting, too.

I am amazed at how many people still treasure this book and how many colleges use it in their theater courses.

Another great strategy series, the Heroes of Might and Magic games are the type that suck you in for hours on end--the sun is up when you start a game, but is inexplicably gone by the time you pull back from the PC. The third installment in the series is the most impressive so far, and Prima's guide to the game should help players battle their way to supremacy in Erathia. As the name suggests, heroes are key to success, and the book begins with a rundown of the different types of heroes and their abilities. Magic is also discussed in detail (being one of the major abilities available to heroes) and the fine art of town building is also explained. Each of the many creatures in the game is described in table form (though the images are too small to do the in-game artwork justice) and a lengthy section on combat can help you figure out how best to employ the creatures under your control. Following a brief chapter on general game strategies, you'll find a breakdown of each scenario in the game. The book does not provide step-by-step walkthroughs for these scenarios, but then again this is not the sort of game that lends itself to walkthroughs. Instead, you'll get an overview of each situation and some tips for emerging victorious. The book closes with an extensive (but difficult to read, due to the tiny type) table on magic items and artifacts.

There once was a game called Heroes, They said it was a game for zeroes. I bought the game without delay, To prove those people were totally gay. I think this book is really great, and for Heroes 4, I just cant wait!

Insightful in some parts, but much of the book is fluff........1999-04-15

This book includes the secondary skill probabilities, total city resource costs, the exact differences between the AIs, and some other useful information. The walkthroughs of each level are also helpful.

In some ways I was disappointed: much of the information can already be found in the manual; many of the strategies are commonsense.

better than you think.......2003-03-29

I have shared this book with several organizations including both senior staff and board members ... all have found it very practical and energy-creating. The concepts are perhaps not new but Steckel puts together a simple, step by step process for people who have not been through it before. This makes it a little less overwhelming and a lot more doable. Of particular importance it the fact that a entrepreneurial venture must be embedded into your organization strategically and practically. So many business ventures become badly managed warts on the organization. Steckels approach helps prevent this from happening.

I wonder if the reviewers who panned the book: a) already run successful businesses making this book too basic or b) have a bitter taste in their mouths from failed ventures (maybe they should read the book again!)or c)wouldn't be caught dead sticking their necks out in a planned and deliberate way that Steckel prescribes.

All in all ... its worth the read. Don't let the title put you off. His point is "there is not dirty money and clean money there is only money."

worthwhile.......2002-04-12

Good for non-profit managers and board members who are not familiar with the subtleties and possibilities of income earning opportunities. Also, those with some knowledge and experience of having partnerships with businesses can validate what they are doing and get other ideas. The book has many vignettes to illustrate the authors' ideas and suggestions. Most of these are real life examples, not hypothetical. The title, however, can turn off people, sounds almost greedy and tacky. If one persists though, I think the authors give a more respectable twist to the phrase, "Filthy rich", somewhere in the introduction, and dont mean what it sounds. In contrast, the title of Steckel's other book, "Making Money While Making a Difference" is more appealing. Steckel has academic and consulting experience, so I would give credibility; however, the title makes you wonder if it is overstated. Read with caution but enthusiasm, which is perhaps what the authors really intended.

The title should have been a warning. The information given is a general summary of the usual semantics found in Marketing 101 and Management 101. I have never seen a book with nothing but generalizations (239 pages in large print - it could easily fit into half that size) and no useful material. Whatever you are looking for, you will not find in here.
