Entertaining and Fun with Good Information.......2007-03-07
Many gambling books are dull reads, even if they give the best possible analyses of the games and how to play them intelligently, so it is great to read a book that is enjoyable and, at the same time, informative. This book gets high grades in those areas. Definitely worth reading.
Frank Scoblete: author of Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution!
A view point worthy to read.......2007-01-13
I liked the way the author wrote. It was an easy read. The video poker section maybe outdated by now because casinos change machines so often.
You Really Should Read This Book.......2006-05-24
If you are only going to read one book on gambling, this is the one you should read. It covers just about every casino game of any consequence and gives you the essential information about each game with a minimum of blather.
This book doesn't promise to make you rich, but it sure can keep you from looking like an idiot. The best part is that it is a pleasant read. It makes the details easy enough to understand so that you can become a competent gambler without having to have a PhD in mathematics.
Even if you don't go to casinos to gamble, this book explains the factors that make it possible to win more often than you lose - for all kinds of games. That's why you really should read this book.
Great Book ! - The Real Starting Point.......2006-05-14
For everyone who isn't an expert gambler, this is the book to start with. It gives you straight information on how to gamble well, how well you can really expect to do if you do it right and what is just wishful thinking.
This is not a get-rich-quick snake oil book. It really does explain how to gamble like an expert and how to achieve the best possible results by playing the games that you stand the best chances at. The best advice is on avoiding sucker games and sticking to the best bets. There is also some really amusing material about BS books that promise the impossible.
Even if you think you are already a pretty knowledgeable gambler, this little book can probably teach you a thing or two that will make you a better player. Beneath the humorous title is a really useful book.
> More Fun When You Win!.......2006-03-21
This is a great book! I read it before my last trip to Las Vegas and it really helped me. Rather than wasting my time and money on sucker games, I followed the advice and played the games that gave me the best odds. Not only did I come out ahead for the trip, but the casino comped my room!
I find that going gambling is a lot more fun when you win. This book can really improve your chances. It sure has helped me.

Book Description
For decades, Conservation International has devoted itself not only to saving endangered regions on the planet but also to chronicling, in lavish volumes, the biodiversity of these areas. These volumes, according to Choice, are"a superbly produced . . . source of hard-to-find information on biodiversity, biogreography, and conservation."Hotspots Revisited continues this rich tradition, drawing on the organization's continuing work to identify, research, and document biologically diverse yet dangerously threatened regions. The first Hotspots volume identified twenty-five endangered regions; Hotspots Revisited reveals an astonishing nine additional areas, from Melanesia to northern Mexico, that now meet the same criteria. Hotspots Revisited presents the most up-to-date analyses of the ecology of these endangered areas—including new information on freshwater fish and other animal populations. But the heart of the volume is in the hundreds of vibrant color photographs of the animals and plants under threat. Magnificent in conception and flawless in execution, Hotspots Revisited is equally at home on a scientist's shelf or an ecotourist's coffee table.

First Rate Summary of Planetary Biodiversity and How to Go About Saving It.......2005-08-07
It isn't often that a sumptuous coffee table book is both visually appealing and scientifically packed with well-researched data. Hotspots Revisited hits the mark on both scores. This updated revision of the 1999 edition of Hotspots expands the number of planetary hotspots to 35. This is an information-packed compendium on those areas of our planet that are species-rich and home to the highest levels of species endemism. The book acknowledges that all biodiversity is important and that all nations and communities must do everything possible to protect our planet's rich biological heritage. Life, however, is not evenly distributed around the world and because of this fact, this volume presents a convincing and forceful rationale for adopting the hotspot strategy for prioritizing areas for biological conservation. This is done by summarizing the distributions of plants and vertebrate animals in a way that is both comprehensive and intelligible to even the lay reader who does not have an extensive background in the biological sciences. This volume is both a visual feast and a celebration of life. It is hard to set it aside once you have opened it. Without a doubt, it is one of the best bargains of any book offered by Amazon.com and should be required reading for all governmental and private organizations charged with saving our natural resources at a time when the fabric of life on planet Earth is being threatened by overexploitation, environmental destruction, violent conflict, and countless other factors. Buy it, read it thoroughly, learn more stunning facts about planetary geography and biodiversity than you have probably ever been exposed to at one sitting, and by all means loan it to a friend once you have immersed yourself in this model expose of our planet's extraordinary biodiversity.

Book Description
As the hero of Star Wars and the immortal Indiana Jones with his legendary hat and whip, Harrison Ford is just an ordinary man in the street that everyone can identify with. HF is certainly no poser, he leads a quiet life (despite a succession of wives, which is about par for the course), and his seductive charm emanates from his simplicity and intelligence. The actor is a genius (the best paid actor in Hollywood), spilling over with ideas during his film shoots. A perceptive biography from a true fan moved by both the man and the actor. who will soon be back on our screens as Indiana Jones!

Customer Reviews:
Useful and entertaining..........2002-09-02
This book is really useful, as it provides an easy reference to Harrison Ford's films and allows the reader to find the ones that are worth watching.
Besides the blurbs of reviews and general information on the movies, however, this book is made really interesting (and at times really funny too) because of the stories about the production experience for each of the movies that it includes as well. Seriously, it is hard to imagine, when viewing the finished products, the disasterous, strange, and hysterical events that occurred during the making of some of the films.
So, if you are a fan of Harrison Ford or are just a big movie fan who is especially interested in behind-the-scenes type information, this book is highly recommended. If you don't care for either of the above things, why are you looking here anyhow?
It was really, really informative!.......1997-04-05
This was one of THE best HF books I have read! (It's one of the ONLY
ones!) Even if you hate HF you would like this book! It has many off-screen photos.
It has SO many pictures! The only thing I can say is, READ IT!!!!!!

Book Description
Late night phone calls are never good news, and hearing his secretary's scared voice on the line, Saxon figured he was in for a case with too many favors and no hard cash. But the L.A. actor-turned sleuth was only half right, because whoever took a shot at his secretary's husband was really aiming for big bucks - that is, Buck Weldon, one of America's wealthiest mystery writers, whose enemy list was longer than some of his stories.
And keeping the bullets away from Buck permanently would have Saxon heading right into Southern California's dark side of drugs and violence- with a blonde in his arms, a gun in his belt, and a killer in his sights.
Customer Reviews:
Introducing Saxon.......2001-07-09
This is Les Roberts' first book, introducing us to Saxon, a private investigator who is also an actor. His secretary calls him one night after her husband has been shot at outside the home of renowned author Buck Weldon. Saxon agrees to look into it and it becomes apparent that the target of the attack was most likely Buck Weldon himself. It wasn't the first attempt on his life, which prompts Saxon to investigate further. Also prompting him to investigate further is Buck's beautiful daughter, for whom Saxon has fallen utterly and hopelessly in love.
This book is somewhat reminiscent of the Elvis Cole books by Robert Crais, although Saxon is not quite as pithy in his dealings with clients, nor as cool. The story moves at a good pace, but it contained no real surprises. Those that were meant to be earth-shattering revelations were telegraphed and I easily figured them out long before they happened. All in all this is a quite enjoyable book, yet didn't contain anything that made it stand out from the many other private investigator books out there.

Book Description
Called "a cornerstone of anime SF," Japan's Gundam franchise that began in 1979 now boasts a worldwide cult of devotees. In the Gundam universe, the Earth Federation battles rebellious off-world colonies, and "Newtype" warriors with evolved mentality pilot gargantuan suits of high-tech armor. This novelization presents creator Yoshiyuki Tomino's unvarnished vision for his own core series, with richer characterizations and a shocking ending. Controversial when it first appeared in English in 1990, the trilogy is being brought to fans in a single re-edited volume.
Introduction by Gundam expert Mark Simmons.
Yoshiyuki Tomino is a writer and one of Japan's best known SF directors. Translator Frederik L. Schodt has written extensively on Japanese culture and lives in San Francisco.
"For anyone unfamiliar with the
Gundam cultural phenomenon, this could be the perfect introduction." --
The Asian Reporter
"Gundam viewers can enjoy a rendition that departs significantly from its animated counterpart, exploring the future world in greater detail, yet retains the visionary science fiction themes of exploration, change, and the struggle to adapt and survive in a technology-driven era scarred with conflict." --

Customer Reviews:
Gundam the way it was meant to be, at last........2007-07-26
I must start this review by stating my bias. I love Yoshiyuki Tomino's work, and Gundam is my favorite saga of anime.
This book, in my opinion, is the best piece of Gundam fiction hands down. As the original Gundam series neared it's end, Sunrise pulled the plug. The series was cut by almost a full season, forcing an entire story arc to be squished into a handful of episodes. About this time Tomino wrote the first of the three books contained in this volume. A few years later, as the series entered a revitalization and Sunrise ordered a three movie compilation to be made, Tomino began writing the final two books. Oddly enough, the original translation of these books were the very first part of the Gundam saga to reach America at the tail end of the 80s.
The books are a masterwork. They diverge from the original series from the first page, dropping the cliche of "young civilian boy finds giant robot his father built and fights evil" for a more realistic view. Amuro Ray is now a cadet, and the refugees of Side 7 are booted off White Base at the first chance. The story is dark, focusing on the pain of war and the stress of battle. Many characters who survived the anime die, and other are left out almost entirely. The story focuses more on Newtypes than the anime did, explaining what they are in better detail. There are only a frwMS attles, but each is heart pounding and well written.
The bottom line is this: Do not read these looking for a novelization of first Gundam. However, if you love serious science fiction, this volume will blow you away. Low points: Some of the translation is ackward, and the ending may make you cry. Personally I liked yhe ending, it was very powerful even if depressing.
I strongly recommend this book, to any Mecha or Sci-Fi fans.
Gihren, Gihren, Gihren!!!.......2006-11-06
The author, Yoshiyuki, set out to add more realism to the sci-fi genre in which he worked at the time (giant battle robot cartoons), and what a tremendous success! Gone is the silly fairy tale world in which the heroes are all-powerful and never die: this is a grim account of a war.
In war, there are heroes (Gihren!) on both sides, villains, also, and casualties sometimes do not care to follow the rules of Karma: in war, people simply die. That is probably the most significant addition to the genre for Tomino.
This book goes all-out for technical details, charachter development (psionically, socially, sexually, all of it), tear-jerking, rationalizations by madmen (gottah love Gihren!), violence, and expression of the longing among all people, everywhere, to be as one.
Okay, that's the long version. Here's the short version: this book [...]
The Glory of UC.......2005-12-22
I loved this book, as previously mentioned this is not a novelization of the series it is a retelling of the basic ideas, and in many ways is much better. For on it eliminates most of the gimmicky weapons and vehicles that did not age well or make sense. Secondly it delves more into the meaning of newtypes. Overall buy this book, because come on its written by Tomino, what else matters!!! lol
Gundam is too kewl for u........2005-10-21
Like.. Totally...
okay, for real this time.
The book is different from the show, like everyone says.
in fact... to point out a major difference... nothing in the one year war takes place on Earth.
No Odessa day
No attack on Jaburo
especially no Doan's Island
But that isn't a bad thing, it's still good. Just Different.
If you enjoy sci-fi war stories, Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers(book... or movie... but if you like the move sequel then... I'm afraid I don't want you to read this book), or Gundam 0079.. then you should get this book.
If you are a fan of Casval Rem Daikun, or Edward Mass, or Quattro Bagina, or Char "The %$#@ing Red Comet" Aznable...
Then you should like this book.
cause Char still kicks ass
At the end of the day it's a book that was written by the creator of Gundam, and translated very well. the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I know some people will complain "it's not the same!" "you're just a gundam fanboy" "the Principality of Zeon suxxorz" and some other stuff that would actually reveal what happens in the book(not that it's bad.. it's just different). Get it if you call yourself a member of the Principality of Zeon, Everyone else.. get it too
Glory to the Principality of Zeon!
Amazing book, but VERY different from the show .......2005-06-07
First off, I think it is important that you know I have not read Confrontation. I have an earlier print of Awakening and Escalation from the 80's, so I won't try to say how it ends. However, this new edition is a godsend for the modern fan. It is trademark Tomino, and while different from the show it is very good. Some of the major differences between the show and novelization are the characters. For one thing, Sha is the same as Char, but he acts very differently. He is revenge crazed, but he is also seemingly cold and manipulative. The newtypes are more widely acknowledged, and new characters come in, such as the Zeon spy Kusko-Al, who Amuro develops interest in Escalation. I have read the books, and any fan of Gundam, let alone sci-fi or anime, should at least read them.

Book Description
Most chess players are fed a set of dogmatic rules about how the opening must be played. The result: stereotyped, unimaginative play. The opening surprises in this book land like bombshells in the apparent calm of standard openings and disorientate your opponents as they grapple with original problems. This book is a treasure-trove of unusual ideas at an early stage of the opening, yet running against the grain of conventional play. Each idea has quick-strike potential and is supported by enough concrete analysis to enable you to try it with confidence.
All major openings are covered. There are surprises for both White and Black, deeply researched and up-to-date. Each idea is assessed in terms of its soundness and its ability to surprise and shock. A thought-provoking introduction examines the underlying concepts of opening play and considers how the standard principles need to be modified in the light of the highly combative handling of the opening now favoured by the world's top players.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining book of a combination of OPENING CHESS TRAPS and IRREGULAR OPENING MOVES.......2006-10-03
I really found this to be a FUN book to read. Like after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a5! OPPS! I meant to move the Pawn to "a6". Your opponent will look at you and say, ah "touch move!". Then he thinks your are a real FISH and will relax thinking he has "gotcha!". Then you play your best and play well. This isn't really sound chess, but it is fun chess, and I wouldn't really do that. But what about 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.0-0 Bg4 6.h3 h5! - OPPS! I meant to put my Bishop on "h5" not the "Pawn", can I take it back? Your opponent will say "touch move!" and then falls for the trap by greed, 6 hxg4? hxg4 7 Nxe5? (he just cannot stop feeding his army!) Qh4 8 g3 and checkmate cannot be stopped. I like this book, but give it four stars intead of 5 because it might give a beginner some bad ideas to play weak moves to try to trick your opponent instead of playing sound moves. I would also therefore suggest getting a book on "sound" opening traps like "Winning Chess Traps, Tactics in the Opening". Also, "Winning Chess Traps" is old but still good. Do I recommend "101 Chess Opening Surprises" - I do if you are getting it for fun first and understand that you shouldn't really use some of the ideas in it, but get some fun reading them.
Puts the fun back into playing the openings.......2005-10-05
I remember back to when I first began playing chess, and the excitment that came from springing a big opening surprise on an (equally) inexperienced opponent. To me this book recaptures the experience, and boy does it deliver the promised bombshells!
Each surprise is graded for soundness and surprise value. An example at the extreme end of the Soundness scale would be surprise 16, the Spanish Bulgarian Defense. The shock move 3...a5 is assigned a Soundness ranking of 1, but can you imagine the effect on your opponent? As Burgess says, the move has never been clearly refuted.
An example of a more main-stream idea is Surprise 71 in the Queen's Gambit, 7 e4. Burgess reminds us that this old pawn sacrifice has been resurrected with some dangerous new ideas. The Soundness ranking is 4, a tribute to the quality of players adopting it with white, including Sokolov and Gelfand.
As with the other 101 titles, it is pleasant to be able to browse at random. Great book.
By the book ?.......2005-04-14
He's (or she's) playing chess by the book'is very often a disdainful remark. But every chessplayer, sooner or later, wants to increase his knowledge of chess. He won't be able to do it on his own. He will need help, help from '101 Chess Opening Surprises', say. This book is very userfriendly. It has only 128 pages but the most important openings are discussed. The notation uses co-ordinates (the easiest way it seems to me) Moreover, on every page are three diagrams to illustrate the moves that are discussed. A must!
Opening traps and curiosities.......2003-08-25
This book is intended for light entertainment, not for instruction. I cannot see how anyone could benefit from more than 20% of the lines in here, because they are from various openings and sometimes require very cooperative play from the opponent.
Basically I saw this book as a collection of more or less amusing opening traps. If I play an opening, I usually buy a specialized book on it, and those books usually include all the lines that you find in this book, and tons more.
I read this book through in half an hour, and found little reason to return to it later. But it is not badly written. If your local library has it, why not borrow it for a train trip.
A condensed version of larger books........2002-02-11
Not enough variety to make it a general opening book (Winning Chess Openings by Yasser Seirawan), nor a book specifically focused on one repertoire (The King's Indian Attack by Eric Schilling). The Openings discussed are somewhat in random order and therefore there is no real focus. Though a good book, very instructive and well written, I would not consider it a necessity for players. If you want to cram on a few popular themes then this book will fit your needs. All levels can read this book, but intermediate players (1200-1600) may utilize this book best.

Dick Lyles, president and COO of the Ken Blanchard Companies, is not the first to suggest that the greatest challenge facing executives today is learning how to work with others. However, in Winning Ways, he condenses four essential strategies for success into a parable that's easy to read and absorb. Lyles's tale stars Albert, a recent computer engineering graduate who isn't getting along well with coworkers. His recent assignment to a key team, in fact, has been an unmitigated disaster, even though it was initiated by a mentor who thought she was offering a career-boosting opportunity. To help Albert build the people skills he lacks, she points him in the direction of a college football coach who has recorded a stunning 239 wins against only three losses by teaching a series of "winning ways" that spurred his teams to extraordinary accomplishments. While slim at just 92 pages, the book successfully conveys the essence of these principles--don't be afraid to give away power, collaboration is better than competition, leave your ego at the door, and solve problems for the future rather than the present or the past--while simultaneously demonstrating how they relate to the Albert in us all. --Howard Rothman

Nothing new.......2005-02-21
I was a bit disappointed in this. There is nothing groundbreaking here. It was just OK. Actually, I think I'm being a bit generous here at 3 stars, because much of the advice is derivative. While the material wan't wrong, it wasn't news. Your time is better spent elsewhere.
Exception to the Blanchard teamýs typical excellence.......2004-01-11
A simple, easy to follow book about building teamwork and advancing your career through `soft' skills. However, I thought the book fell far short of the quality and rigor Blanchard's more popular works on management and team building. While Lyles' ideas work on some level, they seem to fall short when looked at analytically through tested and effective management models.
For example, "Make people feel good about themselves" sounds good on the surface. But what if someone is engaging in unacceptable behavior at work? The assertion "Make people feel good about themselves" is a weakened version of the very effective advice offered in the `One Minute Manager:' "Be tough on the problem, easy on the people."
What about the advice to `build camels,' with consensus ideas being better than individual ideas? In my experience, a team's ideas are often better than an individual's. But, think of pork-barreled legislation, and camels seem less appealing; there is a little known clause in the Homeland Security Act that absolves drug companies currently producing the MMR vaccines, linked to childhood autism, from lawsuits springing from its faulty product. So, to vote against the bill because of this clause would make a senator seem un-American, even if it were a vote against pork-barreled protection for unethical drug companies.
I have loved Blanchard's ideas for years, and this one a rare exception to the team's typical excellence. For a better treatment of teamwork, pick up"Gung-Ho,"another book from the Blanchard management training mill.
One of tools to Win.......2003-09-28
Summary
The story is about the brilliant Albert graduated from the University of Northeastern Michigan (UNM) and he was hired by UGAT (United Global Advance Technologies) quickly because of his intelligent. Albert is very efficient, however, he had poor interpersonal skills and had a problem to work with other people in ¡§Tiger Team¡¨. He believed working alone is better. He felt intellectually superior and rejected others ideas. Therefore, he asked his boss, Megan, let him not work with ¡§Tiger Team¡¨.
His boss sent Albert introduced the famous football coach who set the best record in the history of all of college football and knew the secrets of his winning ways in UNM to him and asked him to learn about the things her taught his team. Over the course of several meetings, the coach taught our hero four principals of working well with others:
1. Making others feel stronger, rather than weaker: give power away to people, the more you give, the more you get
2. Camels are okay: collaborating with others, leveraging their unique talents through others, combining the strengths and vision of everyone on the team to create something everyone can get behind and support
3. Avoiding two-valued thinking: everything is neither good nor bad, nor is one better than the others
4. Influencing for the future: blaming for the future is usefulness for solving problems but need to learn from the past experience as it always is the best teacher to your life
Comments
Easy to read and understand
It is written as context of story as the theory from the coach are given in a story format People can easy to understand what are going on and it is similar to their real life as many people may have the same problem as Albert that can¡¦t work well in a team with other teammates. Feeling own self as the top of people is always the problem of the people who can¡¦t work well with people in a team.
Entertaining
Besides mentioning the four secrets of winning ways, the story finally ended with a marriage of Albert and his teammate Jennifer who had conflicts with Albert before. It is not dry as other book that just mentioning the theory.
The book has good ideas in theory, however, the usefulness and possibility of the four secrets of Winning Ways is uncertain. It is unrealistic to have a good interpersonal skill and good relationship by just using this Winning Ways. Learning about people shouldn¡¦t be seen skimming through a book. People keep changing and also their mind. Moreover, I think working well with people is not just the four secrets in the book. Love, passion, honesty etc there are many elements to build up a good relationship with people. Changing the value and ways of thinking of people may have a higher priority to use this winning ways.
A Loan Officer from North Carolina.......2003-09-09
I found this book to be very informative. It definitely makes you think about how to win people over. It not only tells you how to win them but it points out things you shouldn't do. The 4 secrets for getting great results by working well with people has already helped me increase my business.
Big things do come in small packages. This is a quick read book but it is packed with lots of good information.
Thanks Dick Lyles, great book.
END OF THE INDIVIDUAL.......2002-02-07
The empahasis of society as of late has been on the team rather than the individual. However, I am quite certain that events and inventions of a historical manner were never accomplished by a committee.
The individual spirit that made this country great no longer exists. Universities no longer are places of free thought but rather restrict the students to whatever the new PC movement may be at the time.
