Product Description
Excellent warts-and-all biography of Cary Grant.
Book Description
The basis of the 1959 film starring Peter Sellers, this classic cold war satire-cum-parable-cum-political farce was first serialized in the Saturday Evening Post almost 50 years ago, appearing under the title The Day New York Was Invaded. At the time, the U.S. was afraid of a nuclear attack by Russia — the idea of an attack by a small country was so absurd as to seem comical. Wibberley’s tiny European nation is furious about unfair U.S. trading practices, so they send an army to invade New York City, march up Broadway, and accidentally capture the world’s newest and most destructive bomb. Then they have to figure out what to do with it. A whimsical cross between Kubrick and Kafka, The Mouse That Roared is a quirky classic of world literature, a poignant tale of political morality, and a hilarious, ultimately triumphant portrait of international relations from the perspective of the little guy.
Customer Reviews:
Quite a good book.......2007-08-23
I had to read this for 10th grade English, and it is one of the (very) few good books i have read for school.
The author tells the story in a humorous, interesting manner, and the story line is good. If I had not already known, I would have never guessed that is was written in the 50's. Being a political satire, the novel poses many things to think about besides the story. This is fairly quick and easy read also. I would recommend it.
Pleasant story.......2007-05-22
We are spending part of the weekend at my brother's house. When I visit family and friends I like to spend a few minutes and look through their bookshelves. You can tell a lot about people by the kinds of books they read. I've been checking out my brother's books.
Last night I happened across The Mouse That Roared by Leonard Wibberly in one of my brother's bookshelves. (Yes, he had a nice collection of books.) Years ago I had watched part of the movie version with Peter Sellers. It seemed like a pleasant movie, but for some reason I had never watched the whole movie. I started the book last night and finished today.
The book takes place in the 1950s, during the height of the Cold War. The book creates a country named Grand Fenwick up in the Alps of Europe. It was founded 600 years ago by an Englishman. This small country is five by seven miles with 4,500 people. The country is suffering economically. An American company is illegally ce making the exact same wine that Grand Fenwick sells. Grand Fenwick tries to go through diplomatic channels for redress and is ignored. Finally they decide to declare war on the United States, with the expectation that they would lose, but that the United States would invest money into them. There was precedent for this, after World War II the United States spent billions helping Germany and Japan rebuild.
Since this is fiction there is little surprise that Grand Fenwick wins the war about two thirds of the way through the book. The rest of the book is about how Grand Fenwick handles its unexpected victory.
I enjoyed the book. It was fun and light hearted. I don't plan to track down the other four books. Maybe some day I'll happen across one of the sequels.
Excellent Book!.......2006-05-03
I did not put this book down, it was very amusing and creative! It is definitely worth a read!
Funniest Book I've Ever Read.......2006-02-06
I first read this book when I was in high school, and I liked it so much the first time that I read it again. Years later, when I was preparing my "lesson" plan for a literature class I was to teach for advanced high school-aged students, I picked this as one of the novels to study. Unfortunately, at that time it was out of print, but we found enough copies for our class and had a great time learning and laughing with the book.
Unfortunately, the topics are still as relevant today as they were in the 60's and 70's. America is still waging war. America is still a "super power" willingly flexing its collective muscles whenever and wherever. We're still seen as this huge corporation with no knowledge of or regard for the people we (often negatively) affect. It's like in the movie Hotel Rwanda, the hotel owner thanks the cameraman for filming the massacre and states a belief that it will cause an international outcry, and the cameraman states that he thinks people will see the images, say, "How horrible!" and go back to eating their dinner.
Thankfully, Leonard Wibberly did not just say, "How horrible!" but chose to write about it in a humorous and entertaining way. Maybe someday, we'll heed the message :). Until then, I'm thrilled to see that the book is back in print and has found a new audience.
Short & Refershing!.......2005-06-27
The book captivated me from beginning to end. Its observations were dead on, the plot was hilarious, the language was elegant and the characters were loveable. I couldn't ask for anything more.
Customer Reviews:
Too focused on competetion, and not the gun itself.......2007-08-03
If you are intersted in competing in an NRA match, this book will be very helpful. However, if you are interested in an intro to the AR-15, and basics on how to use it/clean it/shoot it, this book isn't for you. I ended up skimming the first half of the book, as it didn't read very well, and had many tangential points. I have been shooting for years, and wanted a good book for a non-match shooting enthusiast. This book was a disappointment.
Zediker knows his stuff.......2005-08-24
For those who don't know, Glen is a High Master shooter and did it with the AR15. As the book's title says, it is strongly competition oriented; particularly Service Rifle or "Camp Perry" shooting as it is sometimes mistakenly called. He's a proud member of the yellow glass club and it comes through in this book. It is HEAVY with details, too many to list here.
He covers building, shooting, and maintaining a Service Rifle from the ground up. There are chapters on magazines, handloading, and ancillary gear. All of it is written in Glen's easy to read style that has been featured in shooting magazines ranging from American Rifleman to Precision Shooting.
This book is the real deal when it comes to laying out information for the serious Service Rifle shooter and there is plenty of data that also applies to stock AR15s.
If you're a fan of 10-shot one hole groups and you fancy the AR this is your book. In case you didn't notice Glen publishes this book, along with a few others, by himself and he only writes (and prints) what he knows. This book goes far beyond a vanity printing and approaches the level of epigraph.
Book Description
How are children--and their parents--affected by the world's most influential corporation? Henry A. Giroux explores the surprisingly diverse ways in which Disney, while hiding behind a cloak of innocence and entertainment, strives to dominate global media and shape the desires, needs, and futures of today's children. Giroux takes the reader inside the company's vision of the full range of its media--its films, television, famous characters, and spin-off products, as well as its special school, Celebration. He reveals how Disney idealizes and implements its goal of building a world culture--based on innocence and morals, but insidious in its consumerist exploits.
Customer Reviews:
A cool breeze of hot air.......2007-05-09
I bought this book at Disney World, while working at Disney World because the clutter of commercialism and profiteering that was abusing my preconceived version of Disney as innocence and imagination was truly starting to make me detest everything Disney. I bought this book to back up what I felt in my gut was becoming a serious problem with the Disney Corporation.
However while I enjoyed sections of this book I found it to be mostly full of academic fluff. I expected it to be academic, and I bought it for that reason, but unlike other authors such as Neil Postman who can fill pages upon pages with words to make a point that could be made in one paragraph....Giroux cannot pull off the same feat. His points in the book are relevant and at times incredibly insightful...but everything in between is drivel. He seems to ramble on and on in between points with irrelevant examples and arguments that are never ending and repetitive. Most of the time the examples and arguments aren't nearly as insightful as the original point which kills his overall argument because he shoots his own credibility in the foot.
Good social/culture books on Disney are hard to find because they're typically dipped in a bias of some sort. The one thing I can say about this book is even though I don't buy some of Giroux's face critiques of Disney....his stance as more of a social critique is more appealing than simply a Disney lover or a Disney hater (although, obviously this book leans more in the hater direction). This has been a great book as a reference because his arguments are good, but it's dreadful to read though as a whole.
if looking for hard, solid facts move on.......2005-12-05
Giroux's book restates much of what he says in his other books (only with a few Disney anecdotes added). It took him two pages to say what could have been said in two sentences, and I found those same two pages popping up over and over again. I grew tired as I read, I was looking for substance. By the time I was half way through, I was skimming looking for him to say something new (he didn't)
If you're looking for dirt on Disney, read Schweizer's "Disney: The mouse betrayed" Schweizer's book includes documentation of a pedophile problem at Disney, lack of safety at Disneyworld, Eisner dirt, criminal activity, Disney's link to porn...
Disney trains consumers........2005-08-09
Once I read my daughter a book. At age 3, she turned to me and said "buy me the movie of that."
There was no movie of that book, but at age three, my child had already learned that a book means a movie, slippers, pajamas, and action figures. Instead of asking me about the book, or commenting upon the character, the only way she expressed her pleasure was in thinking about what we would buy as a result.
Say what you want about leftism and ivory tower this and that. Then look in your childrens' room, and their mountain of toys, and try to pick out which ones emphasize creative activity, and which are needlessly emblazoned with Disney and other characters. Buying is replacing creativity, in all of us. My child has learned this despite my best efforts. This book confirms what I didn't want to know.
Mickey is a Brown Shirt?!?.......2005-03-17
While Giroux asks a few good questions, I can't take seriously the suggestion that Disney animations are sexist, racist, or anti-democratic. Space limitations prevent a full rebuttal, but if Giroux went after Santa Claus, I bet he'd be a gluttonous, chain-smoking, reindeer abusing, elf oppressing, break-and-enter man with an unnatural fixation on young children. If you want to read how he does a job like this on "The Lion King" and other great movies, this is the book for you.
Academic, but spectacular in that regard........2005-01-04
The negative reviews of this book here have been fairly typical: It's apparently enough to call Giroux "leftist" and to point out his concern with class, race, and gender inequality. That alone completely impugns his work for many people. If you are one of those people, don't pick up this book. But if you're not, you've got to read this. The book is academic, and is written that way: Giroux packs the ideas in, especially in the beginning. But it is also the best piece of cultural criticism I've yet read.
Contrary to what people have been saying here, Giroux does not simply scream "race class gender inequality" over and over again. In fact I was impressed by how seldom he did make direct appeal to those issues. Instead, he focuses largely on the "public pedagogy" (I love that phrase) at work behind a company like Disney (if in fact there is any other company like Disney). Giroux's central idea is that we need an intelligent, critical populace in order to have a true democracy, and his central claim is that Disney actively works against both intelligence and critical thinking in the populace at large. His claim is well argued, and well substantiated. The consistent move towards "security" in our society is a troubling symptom of the kind of worldview that Giroux ascribes to Disney. And if he's right, it is imperative that we all start to think a lot more critically about Disney and other, similar societal influences.

Roar, Sandra, Roar!!!.......2007-10-01
Doug Gunner, mentally abused by his father, is a cold-blooded hustler. Sandra Lyte, abandoned by her church-going parents, is the "mouse" who finally roars. This book is a classic read that will have you angry and teary-eyed.
Dwayne Murray Sr. has written a tale of abuse that many women can relate to. The Mouse That Roared shows the strength of a battered and lonely woman trying to save her life and avenge her childrens' lives. This book also underscores the value of friendships and the importance of helping others.
Read this book, you will love it.......2007-09-18
Wow, I could not put this book down, Dwayne Murray, Sr. wrote a real winner. This could easily be a movie. I won't give away any clues, pick up the book and read it for yourself.
The Cost of Love...Survival is the Name of the Game.......2007-09-11
The Mouse That Roared by Dwayne Murray Sr. is a story of Doug Gunner and Sandra Lyte. Doug and Sandra come from two very different families and communities, but at the same time face many challenges around the dysfunctions of their family dynamics. Both living in New York, with Sandra coming to the Big Apple as a country girl from Richmond, VA... and Doug establishing himself as hustler to not be reckoned with, the two meet. Sandra being a beautiful young woman catches the attention of Doug while she is out with her neighbor. Doug starts the courtship of wining and dinning Sandra and she falls in love. Doug treats her like a princess, while Sandra is unaware of the underground life her prince is involved in.
Doug moves Sandra in with him and does not want her to work; he provides all of her needs. As Doug gets further and further into the life of a hustler...drugs, police payoffs and more...this life takes a toll on Doug. Doug and Sandra become parents of Kareem and Chaka. How does Doug feel about being a father? Does his feeling change towards Sandra? How does Doug relate to his family while continuing to live a life of crime?
The Mouse That Roared was a page turner, drawing you into a story of a woman's love of her man and need to find a way to survive the life she is brought into because of her commitment to him. This book showed me how ones family dynamics and life choices can make you or brake you. I look forward to reading Dwayne Murray Sr. next book "Whatever it Takes" and future books from this author.

A Master Story From A Master Storyteller.......2007-09-06
Iceberg Slim, Chester Himes, and now Dwayne Murray, Sr.: in the annals of literary greatness, a new name must now be placed...
The Mouse That Roared is an absolute masterpiece of quality urban fiction. Murray's electrifying tale of the grim realities of street life is all at once gritty, refined, and slick. He masterfully weaves such diverse issues as domestic violence, child abuse, and police corruption into an eclectic tapestry that leaves you breathlessly turning page after page, feening to see how the full picture ultimately unfolds.
The chief protagonist of Mouse, Sandra Lyte, is the quintessential heroine: disowned by her ultra-conservative, quasi-demagogue father and mother, she sets out for the city that never sleeps, seeking only to fulfill her greatest hopes of making it big in the Big Apple when left with no other paths in life to follow. Not wanting to lose the old-fashioned kindness of her core, though, she soon finds it increasingly difficult to maneuver through cold New York streets where even colder hearts constantly seek to take advantage of - and even destroy - her for purely selfish gain.
Enter Doug Gunner: big-time drug player on the rise and seeming knight in shining armor. Whisking all Sandra's cares away with lavish gifts, romantic nights, and a life free from worry or stress, Doug appears to be the cure for all that ails the pretty young lady's heart. Seduced by his charm, power, and potential, Sandra unwittingly allows herself to sink deeper into Doug's dark world of deception, cruelty, and violence - never realizing until it's too late that once she's in, there's no way out (alive).
You may expect that what follows in Mouse is the typical story of girl-done-wrong, boy-gets-away-with-murder, girl-finally-gets-revenge, and that appears to be the case - until Murray throws in incredibly clever plot twists and changes of direction that incorporate rich characters and nonstop action leading to climax after satisfying climax. The all-encompassing series of events in Mouse flesh out the story in full, giving it an even, well-balanced approach to telling the true stories of the streets: those that appear to be bad guys surprise you with their redemptive qualities, and those that appear to be good guys show the depths of their true repugnance.
In the end, Sandra shows just what a naïve, country girl from the South is really made of, and her courage and conviction in overcoming the most heinous of injustices gives true credence to the title of Murray's tale. This is an absolute must-read for anyone interested in the urban fiction genre, whether just starting out or a seasoned fan. Dwayne Murray, Sr., is a name that will surely be cited by posterity for having perfected the honored craft of street storytelling.

Customer Reviews:
good, but not great.......2002-11-28
As a serious poker player, I found this interesting, but not riveting.
Better than Biggest Game in Town!.......2002-09-20
Not only the best poker book that I have ever read but one of my favorite books regardless of the topic. Mr. Holden is a professional biographer of the British Royal family that loves poker enough to devote a year of his life to experience what it is like to be a professional player. This is not an instrucional book but an enjoyable account of a year of poker written by an excellent author.
Recommended.......2002-08-20
While reading reviews of "Poker Nation", I noticed a large number of poker players who recommended "Big Deal" and "Biggest Game in Town" over "Poker Nation", so I read "Big Deal". It is a first-hand account which gives it a great deal of credibility. The story winds through the author's year with an even amount of detail of items pertinent to the game and to life in general. I particularly liked the tidbits of (life) wisdom strewn throughout the book -- something that modern books are displaying less and less of (no one wants to give advice to anyone else on how the good life can be lived). The book ends with a whimper, compared to many modern life-and-death ultradramas, but it is more true-to-life and we mere mortals.
Oddly unsatisfactory.......2002-05-04
In his (very helpful) bibliography, Holden acknowledges that few poker books can be recommended on stylistic or literary grounds. If he hoped that his effort would join Alvarez or Mamet's writings on the king of card games, I'm afraid he's disappointed.
Though it is a straight chronological account of his activities at the fringes of the high-stakes world over a one-year span, it uneasily mixes in personal biography, some half-formed self-awareness work, and an obsessive reckoning of his immediate financial position. It may concern him, but it never grabbed me.
We read books about gambling to vicariously experience the tightening tension and climax of a big hand. This requires skillful character sketching, and a certain amount of pacing. Holden rushes in and out of so many games, large and small, that we are never sure if this game is The Big One - nor, eventually, do we care. Since he doesn't write grippingly about the players of the inevitable showdown hands, and his personal narrative is not very interesting or clear, the revelation of what he was feeling at any given point during the year is pretty dull.
One thing is obvious: he was very very nervous a lot of the time, discovering his limitations at the gaming tables and worrying about his bank roll. I admire his frankness in this regard, but it isn't easy reading. The final effect is probably pretty accurate, though: he deliberately decided to live "out of his league" for a year, and learned a lot from the experience. A clearer narrative, a better editor, and a few years of perspective might have made a better book. How about a second edition, Tony, with more tales from the infamous Tuesday Night Game?
Three stars, just for existing, though - would that Tom Wolfe or Norman Mailer would tackle this most fascinating of worlds!
What a page-turner!.......2001-03-09
An excellent insight into the mind of a serious poker player. I bought this book on impulse at a second-hand store, and read it in two sittings because my wife forced me to stop to sleep. A riveting look at the world of professional poker and poker tournaments by an inside outsider: Anthony Holden is a very erudite and urbane journalist who also wrote hugely successful biographies of Mr Charles Windsor and Ms Diana Spencer. He is also a passionate poker player, and spent one year as a professional. Considering that he broke even, you can take what he says reasonably seriously!

The birth of the Law of Attraction.......2007-01-10
Since the movies The Secret and What the Bleep Do We Know, there has been a lot of talk about the Law of Attraction, creating your reality and such. This book is the grand-father of them all. If you want to hear it from the horse's mouth, and the man who also wrote Think And Grow Rich, this is the Bible of the Law of Attraction. At 17 lessons and a few hundred pages, you can't get more detailed than that. A fantastic book, easy to read, with lots of examples. Of course, it's dated, written in 1917. But it's still current today, and very readable. Dr Magne, Cancer Free For Life
Beyond inspiring.......2006-10-13
One of Napoleon Hill's maxims is to do more than you are being paid for, and he certainly does that in this book.
This book is truly a Bible for success, and is full of amazing concepts. Though this book was written back in the 1920's and 30s, the concepts are Universal and timeless. Reading this book opens up whole new horizons in my thinking, and has me going wow.
As someone who loves metaphysics, I can state that Napoleon Hill is a very conscious person obviously schooled in the metaphysical laws as well. I love his explanation about energy and the ether, and also the analogy between radio signals, and our own ways of communicating, coinicidences etc.
Clearly, he has had phenomenal success as a teacher and motivator, and he has tapped the greatest minds of his time.
Motivation, wealth building and success without NH's concepts, would be like music as if the Beatles had never existed. You might appreciate it, but something would be missing.
So, I highly recommend this book. If you are into the more metaphysical, check out Creating Money by Sanaya Roman.
If you were to find this review helpful, please click yes.
OUTSTANDING for REAL WEALTH from the Inside Out that LASTS.......2006-05-12
This is one of the BEST books (there are two in the set) that I have ever read for what truly creates real and lasting wealth, as well as what prevents people from the same.
The wisdom in this book is timeless, and will definitely show you where you may have been unconsciously blocking abundance in your life, as well as the character beneath to sustain it with a pure conscious.
I could quote this book a thousand times. A few of my favorites are:
"No man has a chance to enjoy permanent success until he begins to look in the mirror for the real cause of all his mistakes."
"Don't be afraid of a little opposition. Remember that the 'Kite' of success generally rises AGAINST the wind of Adversity - not with it!"
"Is it not strange that we fear most that which never happens? That we destroy our initiative by the fear of defeat, when, in reality, defeat is a most useful tonic and should be accepted as such."
"Service, Sacrifice and Self-Control are three words which must be well understood by the person who succeeds in doing something that is of help to this world."
"Charles Chaplin makes a million dollars a year out of a funny, shuffling walk and a pair of baggy trousers, because he does 'something different.' Take the hint and individualize yourself with some distinctive idea."
"E.M. Statler became the most successful hotel man in the world by rendering MORE SERVICE and BETTER SERVICE THAN HIS GUESTS WERE ASKED TO PAY FOR."
There is more in this book of lasting value that can truly make a difference in your life than many get-rich-quick books I've come across. As this great book states, "Conceit is a fog which envelops a man's real character beyond his own recognition. It weakens his native abilities and strengthens all his inconsistencies."
This book really shows you the stuff wealth is made of. It comes from a pure heart, an open mind that values wisdom, and a person who values people more than dollars. Do that, and you'll come to find more dollars than you ever have before.
Along with this book, I recommend "Think and Grow Rich" (shown above) and "Failing Forward" by John C. Maxwell if you're looking for more current examples, though timeless and rewarding.
They ALL deserve 10 stars.

Not Complete, nor Unabridged.......2007-09-09
I just received my copy a couple of weeks ago. Part of an assignment for my mentoring group was to gather with a group and read the first lesson aloud. I was stopped several times during my reading because my version read differently than the versions of several others (their versions were from the Napoleon Hill Institute) I soon began to see a trend: It seems that BN Publishing has seen fit to remove every reference to Jesus Christ in their "complete & unabridged" single volume. So, do not expect to read all of the author's words in this volume. Napoleon Hill has been censored.
