Book Description
Tells the reader precisely how to avoid being viewed as a neophyte in a business that is notorious for taking advantage of writers.
Customer Reviews:
me, Me, ME..........2003-04-24
This is above all a book about how wonderful the author is. How clever & experienced he is. How well respected he is. Next in his priority is a recounting of his triumphs and interesting personal experiences. Along the way there are countless admonitions about the need for agents in the corporate jungle that is publishing, and the need for authors to respect agents' time and efforts. Also useful, but probably not necessary, are many reminders that agents & publishers are looking for work they can sell (not necessarily work of literary merit).
The hidden message is "don't even try to get your work published- grovel until an agent will represent you." This seems to counteract the title somewhat.
The writing style is meandering. The table of contents is vague and there is no index. It's as though he is telling his tale over drinks at a party. He explains that the primary part of his job consists of socializing: meeting with movers & shakers around the world trying to make deals for his clients. He seems well suited for that.
OTOH, a web search will highlight some scandals that seem to result from his eagerness to make big deals. Though they are distasteful, they may actually be an indication that he is the guy to get you that big deal you are dreaming about. He seems to be willing to do anything it takes.
There is good advice for text writers who are, or should be, considering screen versions of their work. There are several sample proposals in the appendices for those who have never seen them or who would like another perspective. There is good stuff in this book but its hard to find and harder to return to without an index.
Peter Miller is above all a salesman, and probably a good one.
A Guid for SELLING Your Writing.......2002-09-09
... I am here to tell you that this book by literary agent Peter Miller doesn't do everything but it does some things very well.
I've noticed on the writers' groups I frequent that beginning writers panic when it comes to selling their material. They want to know how to write queries, synopses, and proposals, a different art altogether from whatever writing they do.
I also notice that some of the advice they get is either less than sound, unimaginative or both. "GP! GP!" gives out actual samples for selling your writing that feel right. There isn't one that isn't an excellent guide for a budding writer with her sights on commercial success. That includes literary types who believe they aren't in writing for big money but still want to have their book READ!
I think my queries, media releases, etc are pretty good. I still wish I'd had this book as a guide when I was shopping [my book]
Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of "This is the Place"
Good Information.......2001-08-15
I doubt that it will ever be easy to find a good literary agent, but Peter Miller will give your query letter a good read. Though he didn't go for mine, he did at least take the time out to explain the whys and wherefores of his needs. I guess in this world literature is a business, a difficult truth for a would be literary artist to swallow, but a truth that can't be ignored by a writer who wants to find a major publisher. At least he was honest, and there's something to be said for that.
Really good book!.......2001-01-07
The man knows his stuff. Go out and get this book. You will learn a lot. Also check out Guerrilla Marketing for Writers by Levenson et al.... also a great book.
An Invaluable Resource for Writers Who Want SUCCE$$!.......1999-01-22
Peter Miller insightfully condenses 25 years of publishing experience to give writers - - from beginners to pros - - a do-it-yourself guide to get published! and produced! The author provides many varied examples of book and tv proposals which sold, and he explains why. Miller gives advice on everything from a proposal's content to style to substance, and how to package and present the finished product. The book highlights Miller's impressive personal achievements in his field, but in a down-to-earth, easy to read manner. You'll respect Miller's skills as an agent, while appreciating his sincere advice on work ethic and keeping a positive attitude. Miller uses real-life examples that writers will find invaluable as they pursue their dreams of hitting the jackpot, while learning how to avoid the roadblocks along the way. Two thumbs up!!!
Book Description
The Star Wars films continue to revolutionize science fiction, creating new standards for cinematographic excellence, and permeating popular culture around the world. The films feature many complex themes ranging from good versus evil and moral development and corruption to religious faith and pragmatism, forgiveness and redemption, and many others.
The essays in this volume tackle the philosophical questions from these blockbuster films including: Was Anakin predestined to fall to the Dark Side? Are the Jedi truly role models of moral virtue? Why would the citizens and protectors of a democratic Republic allow it to descend into a tyrannical empire? Is Yoda a peaceful Zen master or a great warrior, or both? Why is there both a light and a dark side of the Force? Star Wars and Philosophy ponders the depths of these subjects and asks what it truly means to be mindful of the "living force."
Customer Reviews:
Good book, unil..............2007-01-15
I found this book to be quite entertaining and a good refresher in the basics of Plato and Aristole's writings. The only problem was the one sided view when you got to the "environment" section. The author who wrote this section came across to me as a tree hugging, socialist who would like to see corporation go down. Really a big turn off!!!!! Shame!!! Otherwise, with the exception of this one section, the book was fine. Nothing earth shattering, but neither is the "Jedi's mythology". All it is is an amalgomation of already written and explored mythologies with lightsaber fights and spaceships.
Philosophy and the Force........2007-01-11
I'm kind of a weirdo.
My wife and I went on a trip for our anniversary to a Bed and Breakfast in Thomasville, GA. We just stayed in the room and read the whole time. I read this book in about 1 day.
I have to say that I was more than a little surprised at how good a book it was. I've read other books in the Philosophy and Popular Culture series, but was expecting this one to be kind of lame. Star Wars is my favorite movie series of all time, and I find that it's easy for someone commenting on or writing about the series to provoke my ire. (Dorks hate it when other people get their life's obsession wrong.)
I am by no means a great mind. But I do enjoy the notion that Plato put forth that one cannot avoid popular culture, and it is better to teach by popular examples than by those examples that no one will understand. As a result, I say that this series is a good one if you want to get acquainted with philosophy in a "friendlier" setting than a classroom, though the average reader will still have to think more deeply than they usually do.
Which is why this is a good book. It's an introduction to critical thinking about philosophy. It causes you to question the nature of good and evil. (ie..The notion of Lying Jedi and Truthful Sith). And again, all of it is heavier thinking than the average movie watching TV viewer is used to doing, but it's worth it. It can open your eyes to philosophical notions that you hadn't really fathomed before. (ie...There is a wonderful article on Stoicism as represented by Yoda. I had no idea that stoicism was a philosophical movement, I just thought it described a certain quality. And even that was the vaguest of notions.)
There were certain aspects (philosophical not stylistic) of the book that I didn't really care for, understand fully, or agree with. But to be fair, the editor also put a note in the introduction saying that he didn't really agree with everything in it either. It does, after all, cover a wide berth of philosophical issues. No one can possibly agree with all philosophies.
So if you are like me, and probably watch too much TV, but occasionally let slip the surly bonds of your couch and reach out to learn something new, this is the book for you.
Son of Frost, Siblings of the Force.......2006-11-03
For those whose Heart burns with the fires of the cosmic energy, and loves Star Wars. This is the book for you.
Philosophy from the Jedi Masters.......2006-03-23
Certainly Abrams and the contributing writers are strong in the force. I enjoyed this book. While it may not be very deep for the seasoned philosopher, the book serves as a great intro to philosophy in a unique way. The material is clearly well researched, both from the movie and from the philosophies covered, but written in a way that beginners like myself can understand.
A great choice for both Star Wars fans and the padawan philosopher!
Great idea but a bit monolithic.......2006-03-06
I give the book high marks for its novel approach to integrating philosophy (so too the series) and popular culture in a creative way. The essays are brief, readable and mostly to the point. Fans of Star Wars, of course, will enjoy it the most. I was a little disappointed by its repetition and lack of deeper penetration. Great emphasis, for example, is place upon Yoda. He is the guru and his line "Fear leads to anger... hate .... suffering," is then a key point in many essays. Less emphasis upon the female voice is found. Padme a little but where is the voice of Lea?? Quite enjoyable but needs greater penetration!
Book Description
The Tao Te Ching, after the Bible, is the most translated book in the world. Its reputed author, Lao Tzu, lived about 2600 years ago. Faced with a corrupt, competitive, egocentric society, which had lost its way (sound familiar), he left society riding upon an ox. He felt that society had lost the Tao and that was the cause of the decline of the civilization. Humans have always had an insatiable hunger for spiritual guidance and recently westerners have had a rekindled interest in the Tao. Perhaps it is because we see the same problems today that Lao Tzu saw in his day.
The "Star Wars" series contains, for some, a philosophical basis. "The Tao of Star Wars" uses the motifs from the "Star Wars" series to explain the basic tenets of Taoism. Although some of these concepts are relatively familiar, such as acceptance, patience and simplicity, their nuances as they apply to Taoism are invigorated utilizing the "Star Wars" motifs. Other tenets, such as wu wei, yin-yang and p'u, may be completely foreign to the western mind and deep philosophical explanations are not practical for application to daily living. Since following the Tao is walking a living path in harmony with the way the world is sensible definitions are needed. These Taoist concepts have life breathed into them by the "Star Wars" themes. This will allow the reader to apply these concepts to one's life as the essence of the Tao is to experience life in the present moment.

Excellent book.......2007-02-20
An excellent book reflective of the current practice or Trauma Medicine today.
Easy to Understand.......2007-01-26
This book is great if you didn't understand what the Jedi were trying to teach in Star Wars. I don't think it is a book that you can read if you haven't seen Star Wars, because you won't know what he is referring to. Watch the Star Wars movies, then get the book. Also it is a great introduction to Taoism.
A nice introduction to the Tao.......2005-05-27
I just finished reading this gem. It is a very nice introduction to the Tao with a Star Wars Twist, wetting the appetite for more. If your interested in Taoism and you are a Star Wars fan, a Jedi perhaps ;) you can not pass this up.
Inspirational Introduction to the Tao Te Ching.......2004-12-08
The Tao is a path...the only logical act is to travel it. ~John M. Porter, M.D. (Professor of Clinical Surgery in Arizona)
John M. Porter has been studying the Tao and believes following the Tao is like "walking a living path." I loved how he takes The Star Wars series and explains how it is connected to the basic tenets of Taoism. He shows how Taoist roots touch every aspect of life from feng shui to qu gong or I Ching.
If you are new to The Tao Te Ching, it will be interesting to read the translated portions from Stephen Mitchell's translation. If you are a Star Wars fan, then you will enjoy a wealth of quotes. The author's comments are interspaced between quotes from the movie and The Tao Te Ching. You may also find the Chinese characters to be interesting. There are drawings throughout.
The Chapters Include:
Taoism - an overview and an explanation as to why the Tao is highly personal. There is a brief summary of the concepts to follow in each additional chapter.
The Force as the Tao - Quotes from George Lucas and the connection between his movies and Joseph Campbell's teachings.
Each additional chapter takes one quality and explores how it shows up in the movies:
Acceptance
Patience - This chapter was of special interest to me since I once prayed for patience and since then have been thrown into the patience journey. (You sometimes get what you pray for...) In this chapter he shows how Luke needs patience. He then quotes "Patient with both friends and enemies, you accord with the way things are" from chapter 67 of The Tao Te Ching. Then he gives these quotes:
Yoda: (signing) Will he finish what he begins?
Then the author shows how patience and perseverance work together to yield good results. Thinking of "patience in action" was a new concept for me.
Uncarved Block
Wu Wei
Simplicity
Humility
Life Experience
Present Moment Living
Yoda the Sage Master - I loved the "Traits of a Master" in the Yoda chapter. These can be wonderful goals for anyone seeking to live a more spiritual existence.
John M. Porter is a natural teacher who knows how to take examples and fill them out into life teachings. This book made me want to go rent the entire Star Wars series and it is a must-have for Star War fans. I found this book to be a peaceful, healing read and I can highly recommend it to you.

A good introduction to taoism for Star Wars fans.......2004-07-06
This is a good, simple book that shows the correlation between taoist philosophy and the Star Wars films. The author's writing style is enjoyable and the book is very easy to follow. If you are a fan of the Star Wars films and would like to learn about taoism, then I recommend this book. Of course, you should also pick up a copy of the Tao Te Ching, which is the cornerstone of the philosophy -- I recommend the translations by Jonathan Star and Brian Browne Walker.

From the supplier: U.S. lawmakers' decision to approve a system designed to defend the country against incoming long-range biological or nuclear missiles creates a chain reaction of defense. If the U.S. were to build a defense system against the estimated 20 single warhead missiles pointed at the U.S. by China, China may increase the arsenal to overcome emerging defenses. The action would cause a obstacle for non-proliferation treaties and the elimination of nuclear weapons.

From the supplier: The film 'Star Wars' by George Lucas reaffirmed popular mythology by supporting its tenets. Rather than achieving redemption through the surrendering of power, as taught by many religions, the film advocates redemption through increasing power. 'Star Wars' reinforces cultural assumptions that successful resolution comes only through overpowering one's enemies.

Kaja and Kelod a Fascinating, Informative Read.......1999-10-07
Kaja and Kelod: Balinese Dance in Transition is a true find. Sandwiched in the grey area between purely scholastic work and popular introduction, K&K succeeds at both. With excellent prose and intelligent progression, DeBoer and Bandem trace the history of Balinese dance through the decades. The beautiful pictures perfectly complement the writing. Throughout, Bandem and DeBoer delve deep into the particulars of their subject, without becoming unreadable to a layman. At times witty, always intelligent, Kaja and Kelod is a truly excellent work.
