Book Description

The 1992 release of the "Director's Cut" only confirmed what the international film cognoscenti have know all along: Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, based on Philip K. Dick's brilliant and troubling SF novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, still rules as the most visually dense, thematically challenging, and influential SF film ever made.

Future Noir is the story of that triumph.

The making of Blade Runner was a seven-year odyssey that would test the stamina and the imagination of writers, producers, special effects wizards, and the most innovative art directors and set designers in the industry.

A fascinating look at the ever-shifting interface between commerce and the art that is modern Hollywood, Future Noir is the intense, intimate, anything-but-glamerous inside account of how the work of SF's most uncompromising author was transformed into a critical sensation, a commercial success, and a cult classic.

2 out of 5 stars Tabloid Trash.......2006-05-28

At best, this book should be looked at if you're interested in the facts behind the production of the film and you're able to look past Sammon's masturbative narrative.

While the book is informative on what happened and the difficulties behind the making of the film, the author's writing ability is about the same as someone standing next to you with a bullhorn. Self-aware and bordering on narcistsic, Sammon's dirt-basic writing ability has a constant feel of "Hey! I was here to see all this!" attitude that really undermines his attempt at objective writing.

Frustrating and amatuerish, "Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner" is an unworthy footnote and a worthwhile coffee coaster.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting but lacking in proof.......2005-07-05

The book provides a fascinating look into the trials and tribulations that was the making of Blade Runner. The movie is easily Scott's best, and his relentless pushing of the cast and crew is a testament to his determination and vision. Future Noir gives an in depth view of all the turmoil; the "various cuts debacle", the studio interference, the collaboration, and the omnipresent friction.
It is worth the read but the writer's prejudices are just that. This is not the most influential scifi made. It was a quiet, intellectual scifi and I'm not sure it's influence can ever be quantified. But I enjoyed it-actually it is my favorite scifi behind The Phantom Menace(that's a joke people)-and I enjoyed this book.

4 out of 5 stars Minute Production Details, No Proof of the Filmýs Influence.......2002-10-26

This is a fantastic book and reference tool, and a must-have for any hard-core Blade Runner (BR) fanatic. It's packed with names, places, dates, fascinating factoids throughout, a trivia cornucopia. But, you've gotta be a serious BR fan to stick with author Paul Sammon all the way through this densely detailed, thorough, and clearly personally meaningful work. The book does have one major flaw: Sammon's failure to prove his subtitle promise that Blade Runner is the most influential sci-fi film of all time.

The book reads easily and well, Sammon's style informal. He writes as one BR fan to another, a great approach. The production details are thorough, insightful, and wonderful to read, 441 pages in 18 chapters, with nine appendices containing interviews, production details, the cast list, etc. Sammon is a total BR devotee, I compliment and commend him on his achievement and the recognition of those who worked so hard to make BR.

There is vast information throughout from all members of the cast and crew, all of them supportive of Sammon's effort to tell their story. There is surprisingly liberal information from the movie's principals, Ridley Scott, Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Michael Deeley, Syd Mead, Hampton Fancher and David Peoples. One disappointment is the absence of direct input and comment from the soundtrack maestro, Vangelis. Sammon nevertheless gives him thorough justice.

Wonderful esoteric tidbits abound through the book, such as the revelation that the original lead was not Harrison Ford, but Dustin Hoffman. Edward James Olmos provides great background on his preparation for his role as Gaff and his detailed construction of his Cityspeak dialog (most of it sadly unused). We learn of fantastic special effects scenes never realized, and that in the background in one of the aerial city shots is a painted Millennium Falcon model. We learn that the process of creating this movie was a years-long, highly personal effort, first by Hampton Fancher to secure rights and create a screenplay, then later by Ridley Scott and other members of the team who continued to craft the film even after they were fired by the production company. It is a story of dedication to craft and art from a group of artists looking to raise diverse artistic, social, moral, and ethical issues with this genre-transcending film. I often was reminded of the documentary Hearts of Darkness, the story of Francis Ford Coppola's unending dedication to and struggles with the making of Apocalypse Now.

Highlighted superbly in the book is the true key to BR's success, Ridley Scott's intense attention to detail, his relentless questioning of the larger context and physical placement of the story. For example, Scott insisted on instructions painted on the futuristic parking meters in the street scenes. Absolutely illegible in the finished film, this sort of detail nonetheless set a compelling, even subconscious tone for the set and those who worked within it.

Particularly entertaining is Chapter 8, the scene by scene account of the shoot, with comment from the actors, producers, specialists, crew, and Scott. Also very useful for the true BR fanatic are the appendices listing all of the various BR versions, their formats, availability, and catalog information. Sammon does the same for the various soundtracks and musical compositions heard throughout the film, even the music and lyrics from the advertisements sported on the ad-blimps. Especially enjoyable is Appendix C's detailed list of "blunders," a compendium of the film's both obvious and subtle continuity errors, dubbing flaws, and inserted footage.

There are dozens of illustrations throughout the book, and Sammon gives due credit to BR's still photographer for the hundreds of stills that BR fans know and collect. The main problem is that the ONLY color photos in the entire book are on the front and back covers. The B/W photos in the book are small, grainy, poorly reproduced, and do not reflect Sammon's praise. These sorry photos do not allow the reader, who hasn't seen many of these never-before-published stills and production drawings, to revel in the details.

Sammon is overly obsessed with cataloging ALL of the different versions of the film, and detailing the most minute differences. We have chapter after repetitive chapter discussing the differences between the Workprint, the pre-release revisions, the theatrical release, the various video, broadcast, and satellite releases, as well as the competing director's cuts. The fascinating core tale of the political, economic, and artistic fights over all of these versions of the film is lost as Sammon loses track and focuses too closely on the details of the different versions, obsessing to the point of irrelevance on miniscule details. For the BR fanatic this is invaluable, but for most readers this makes the narrative tedious and repetitive, given this technical information is available also in Appendix B.

Sammon's promised discussion of BR's influence on sci-fi film is absent. His subtitle, "The Fascinating Story Behind the . . . Most Influential SF Film Ever Made" promises a discussion of BR's influence on filmdom. His discussion is poorly introduced, disorganized, and sorrowfully weak on supporting facts and testimonials, leading ultimately to the conclusion that BR simply is NOT the most influential sci-fi film of all time. In fact, the paltry six-page discussion of BR's influence is one of the shallowest, most poorly researched and organized parts of the entire book. Sammon's strength and enthusiasm clearly lie in the film's production details. Nowhere in the book does he cite any filmmaker, actor, editor, producer, or special effects artist describing BR as an influence.

This book is an invaluable acquisition for any die-hard BR fan, and a great memoir for any student of filmmaking. It's not for the casual BR or film fan; it's a cult book, just as Blade Runner is a cult film. Disappointingly, Sammon fails to deliver a crucial element of his work, a thorough and convincing discussion of BR's influence on cinema and its place in greater filmdom.

5 out of 5 stars Blade Runner Bible.......2002-10-04

The book is written by Paul M. Sammon in 1996, about 15 years since the original release and 4 years after the Director's Cut re-release. As he explains in the opening chapter of the book, Sammon worked for a science fiction magazine called Cinefantastique, and what began as a double-issue special on the making of the highly-anticipated film Blade Runner eventually evolved into what Sammon calls an "exhaustive archaeology" of information regarding the film.

The novel is simply an overwhelming wealth of information on all things Blade Runner; chapters focus on every minute detail such as the evolution of the story as it passed through the hands of Phillip K. Dick's novel, Hampton Fancher's screenplay, then into the hands of David Peoples and Ridley Scott. Chapter VIII is such a delight, as it meticulously works through each scene in the film, stopping along the way to add tidbits of info such as exclusive interviews with the actors. Sammon apparently also had the luxury of roaming the set of Blade Runner, and he reveals things such as the futuristic magazine covers he would see on the magazine racks and many other incredibly obscure decorations the design team threw in that are virtually impossible to see when you watch the film.

Like the other reviewers, I agree that Sammon is not perhaps the most skilled writer, and the prose of the book is very choppy and (especially in Chapter I) pretty corny. What troubles me most, though, is that Sammon has a particularly annoying habit of throwing out names without properly introducing them and explaining their role in the Blade Runner universe. Mercifully, there is a cast and crew listing printed as an appendix, which is a great help. This, and some of the other errors in the book seem quite obvious, and it leaves one wondering who was in charge of the editing.

Anyhow, the book allows great insight into the workings of the film, all gathered from what must be piles and piles of notes and cassette-recorded dialogue Sammon collected over the years to produce a rather well-organized book for fans of the film to read. I have seen the film countless times, and the new perspectives and ideas gained from this book keep the film fresh and wondrous as the years go by.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating.......2002-07-20

There can be no better introduction to Blade Runner.
There is a wealth of material here available nowhere else - from interviews with Philip K Dick to anecdotes about the shooting of the film.
My favourite chapters were the ones dealing with the writing of the screenplay; and the one dealing with the rediscovery and release of the Workprint, and the subsequent Director's Cut. You cannot find this information anywhere else.

Mr Sammon's writing is somewhat overenthusiastic, reading like a fan's website. But the sheer quanitity and interesting nasture of the material makes up for this.

      Book Description

•Combines social history and pop culture to reveal how jazz, blues, soul, country, and hip-hop have developed

•Includes interviews with Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, David Byrne, Sly Stone, Donna Summer, Bonnie Raitt, and dozens more

      • Confronts questions of race and finds meaningful answers

From Jim Crow to Eminem, white culture has been transformed by black music. To be so influenced by the boundless imagination of a race brought to America in chains sets up a fascinating irony, and Souled American, an ambitious and comprehensive look at race relations as seen through the prism of music, examines that irony fearlessly—with illuminating results. Tracing a direct line from plantation field hollers to gansta rap, author Kevin Phinney explains how blacks and whites exist in a constant tug-of-war as they create, re-create, and claim each phase of popular music.

5 out of 5 stars The Research Is Top-Notch.......2006-04-26

I read Souled American in a few sittings - it's that good. Here, for what I think must be the first time in a highly readable and very entertaining book, are the truths that some music historians have tried hard to keep in the dark. Writer Kevn Phinney has a pleasant writing style and this enhances the overriding theme of this fact-crammed journey through Black Blues and White Rock And Roll - that much of what we know or experience as the roots of "white rock" was really the result of the hard work and vast talent of earlier African-American musical artists and, in some cases, musical geniuses. The interviews with such greats as Ray Charles, David Byrne, Sly Stone, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, and others are worth the price of the book alone. Mr. Phinney really knows how to ask questions and draw out information.

The author's understanding of how musical worlds, tastes, styles, and talents blended or were at odds with each other enhances his thesis. He appreciates the historical roots of blues and rock. When did any writer of a book head for Kansas City to really dig into the subject of KC Blues and then make a sane link to specific styles of rock and roll. Sheer brilliance. And enthrallingly written. The author brings in refences to myriad bands, such as The Rolling Stones or Chaka Khan. The musical richness of this volume is superb.

Mr. Phinney details politics, sociology, and culture as it influences music from the horrid days of Jim Crow to the White Rap escapades of Eminem. The author knows full well that white culture has been mightily transformed by black music. There is no escaping this fact. Souled American is a great book that has long been needed. Mr. Phinney makes stunning links between slave chants and specific musical riffs being heard today. This entire project seems a staggering undertaking. But the book is not daunting at all. It works on every level. It informs, enlightens, entertains, and succeeds on every level and I'm glad I read it. The author has a keen awareness of culture, counter-culture, and cultural shifts. Not only should the book be read by every musician, it should be read by anyone who loves the blues or rap or hip hop or good old rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars Superior and fascinating book .......2006-04-24

I read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. It really is a richly detailed book. The interviews were fascinating. This is a superior book to others I have read on the subject. I liked the photographs, too. Author Kevin Phinney lets the artists do the talking and keeps the mundane sociology to a minimum. His writing style is informative without being preachy. He explains so much of rock and roll in exact terms that make sense. I wish the publisher would go and give the book more publicity. I only found out about it while searching the name of a former black blues player who's in the book. Anyway, a good book, well worth your time. And, you get a lot for your money. This is a solid bit of musical research. Enjoyable and entertaining reading.

1 out of 5 stars Overblown, overhyped and under delivered.......2006-04-04

I bought this book partially in reliance upon others who had previously purchased (assumedly) and read (again assumedly)it.
Now that I have read it, I have doubt on both issues.
In his introductory, Phinney makes clear that he has no particular music background and in fact was ignorant of some of the most profound musical events of the 20th century (i.e., who was whom at Motwon). This ignorance shows in his writing.
      TH
he books is a series of disjointed vignettes, lacking in perspective, musical insight or any particular social relevance.
People, places, things and events pass by as if one were a passengenr on the 20th Century Limited. Everyone and anyone gets a page or two and then is forgotten.
This book has any audience. Those who have never listened to a record, experienced a live performance or lack a modicum of intellectual curiosity.
This book should have been optioned out and retitled "20th Century Music for Idiots".
There are so many good treaties on popoular music and its effect upon a racially diverse culture. There is no need to settle for this melage.
I wish I could get my money back.

      5 out of 5 stars Souled American.......2006-01-08

By far the best comprehensive read on music made in the United States that I've read. Phinney weaves a story line that takes us all the way back to the era of the African slave trade where an Englishman named Richard Jobson becomes the first European in recorded history to write about his observance of witnessing Africans involved in the making of music. He brings us through history right to today's doorstep where music makers as diverse as Eminem to Wynton Marsalis continue to tell the story not only of their music, but who we are as people living and contributing to an constantly evolving culture. The research is extensive and exhaustive. It reminds me of Ken Burn's Jazz series on steroids as it encompasses all genres of music through many centuries including slave work songs, minstrelsy, gospel, ragtime, blues, jazz, rock and roll, R & B, rock and todays hip-hop. There isn't enough attention made to the Latin tinge in American music but that ommission just as it was with the Burns series doesn't take away from all of the great research that defines this book. For music lovers and people who are interested in the underpinnings of American culture in general, it is a must read! It is a definitive statement of the addage that music is a mirror that reflects the people and times it was created in. Highly recommended!!

        Passage to Dawn

Six years. Not so long in the lifespan of a drow. And yet -- in counting the months, the weeks, the days, the hours -- it seemed to me as if I had been away from Mithral Hall a hundred times that number. The place was another lifetime, another way of life, a mere stepping stone to. . .

        To what? To where?

I ride the waves along the Sword Coast now, the wind and spray in my face. My ceiling is the rush of clouds and the canopy of stars; my floor, the creaking boards of a swift, well-weathered ship. Beyond that lies the azure blanket, flat and still, heaving and rolling, hissing in the rain and exploding under the fall of a breaching whale.

        Is this, then, my home?

        5 out of 5 stars Great Author.......2007-06-09

As always, R.A. Salvatore continues his great series going deeper into the Dark Elf city with lots of action writing. With just enough detail to spark your imagination in the way every fight spans out it makes you want to read every novel Salvatore has ever written. I HIGHLY suggest this series of books to anyone with even a slight interest in Science Fiction.

        5 out of 5 stars Wow.......2007-05-24

This really is a fantastic series. I fell in love with Drizzt from the first book and have been following the journeys of him and his companions. This is one of the best D&D based series I have ever read and would recomend this to anyone interested in such a genre.

3 out of 5 stars Very predictable, but pulls in some interesting new characters.......2007-04-15

After ten books (three in the dark eld trilogy, three in the icewind dale trilogy and four in the legacy of the drow series), the characters are becoming familiar and the interaction and culture of the races are known quantities. Unfortunately, the plots are becoming pretty familiar as well.

Salvatore delivers as always with his battle sequences, where his writing is always well done (makes me wonder if he physically steps through the fighting himself so as to better write it). This book also contains time on the ship Sea Sprite, and battles with pirate ships, which are well done. I also enjoyed the new characters of the wizard Cadderly and his wife Danica, although their appearance was short.

But bringing back the Crystal Shard, Ertuu (who we knew from the previous few books was going to have to make a return appearance) and the bringing of a main character back from the dead makes for a fairly predictable plotline.

I know people who have read the entire series (which at this point is seven more books), but I have to question what additional events and devices can be brought into this series to make it interesting and enjoyable. If characters die, except on soap operas they should stay dead.

The R.A Salvatore books for the Drow series is the first books i ever pick up and read. Me not being a reader thought i would never sit a read a book on its entirity, well i was wrong. since the very fist books i just kept reading. Salvatore puts the material in such a vivid way that you get involve in the story and you feel each character and their way of life since i started i read 9 books and working on my ten book. Thats how great the books are i Would recomend to everyone but specially to those people who think they will never read. Last i would like to say i hope that you soon be enjoying the books They're Greatness all aroundLegacy of the Drow Gift Set: The Legacy, Starless Night, Siege of Darkness, and Passage to Dawn (Forgotten Realms: Legacy of the Drow)

"As an old school gamer I dislike so many things that occur in these books, but this is some of the best sword & sorcery reading you will find. This is the 2nd or 3rd trilogy dealing with these characters. The imagination that went into creating the Ecology of the twisted society of the underdark is simply mind blowing."

5 out of 5 stars Drow Gift Set.......2007-01-14

I was pleased at the condition of my order, and the speed which it reached me.

        5 out of 5 stars Drizzt.......2003-11-05

I'm guessing most people who are thinking of buying this are already familiar with the author, or perhaps have already read all four books.

If you haven't, then here's what you need to know. These four books center around a good-aligned drow elf named Drizzt, who is now wandering the surface of Faerun. If you've never read about Drizzt before, be advised that these four books are not first in chronological order of Drizzt's life; you'll be given some backstory to understand who Drizzt is, but you'll also know pretty much everything that happened in all the earlier novels, which may lessen your enjoyment of them when you eventually read them. I say "when" rather than "if" because it seems to me that if you approach these novels without an anti-Drizzt or anti-Salvatore mindset, you will love them, and you will go buy all the others.

I'm not going to write out a play-by-play of events in the book, since you can look them each up individually and get plenty of information from other posters. I give these 4 books a total of 5 stars; some are better than others, but none rank below a 3.

As a sidenote, if you are buying this as a gift for someone, you might want to know that they are set in the Forgotten Realms, which is a unique world, NOT a generic fantasy world. I would not purchase this set as a gift for someone unless I already knew that they were familiar with the Forgotten Realms world. It's too complex a place to approach in the middle of a series without understanding the world at least to some degree.

            Product Description

Dawn in Madinah: A Pilgrims Passage is a vivid account of a month-long retreat in the Prophets Mosque in Madinah. The luminous details of this sojourn in Islams second-most sacred mosque are superimposed upon episodes from the life of the Prophet which forms the backdrop for the slow unfolding of a narrative filled with intense reflections on contemporary Muslim life. Woven into the tapestry of this unique book are the desires, hopes, fears, and spiritual struggles of many pilgrims who were present during the month of Ramadan in the Mosque, fourteen hundred and eighteen years after it was built by Prophet Muhammad and his Companions soon after their arrival in Madinah. This juxtaposition of contemporary lives and those lived fourteen centuries ago creates a mosaic in which one can find common threads of a journey toward God.

                  Book Description

Passage to Dawn is a poetic journey through the author's life. He uses poetry to form questions and answers to some of the most difficult of life's decisions. Take a journey and see how the experiences of life and death affect not only the author but travel to those he may never meet. These experiences, though each one unique, are not unlike many that everyone has—from near deadly accidents to the birth of children and everything in between. The Passage is there for all of us to see; sometimes, though, it's a matter of recognition. It is also that little bit of hope we all have that none can extinguish. Somewhere, sometime, that thought of making it to the next day is all we have. If we just hold out a little longer, maybe everything will be all right. Maybe knowing that The Passage exists can help someone else find it.

                        Book Description

Good work habits, time management, computer skills, and ethics are just a few of the competencies employees will find essential in a variety of future jobs. Designed to help readers enhance their interpersonal skills in the workplace, this guide is a blend of current and traditional interpersonal topics with a strong emphasis on skill development and self-assessment. Offers a more personal and job-oriented (and less managerial) approach than other books on the subject. Introduces basic concepts to enhance understanding of key topics; then, skill-building suggestions, exercises, and cases are presented that are crafted to improve the interpersonal skills related to each topic. Provides Web Corners in each chapter that point readers to Internet resources for that chapter. Updates information throughout as appropriate, including new cases and case problems; new chapter-opening vignettes; and several new self-quizzes. Features new topics throughout: includes value stereotypes for Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y; how to prepare for stressful conversations; work-family conflict as a stressor; and much more. An ideal reference for participants in leadership and supervisory training courses that emphasize interpersonal skills, rather than leadership theory and research.

1 out of 5 stars This book is so lame that I actually recommend you avoid any class that requires it, if at all possible........2006-07-07

I really wish I could get my money back from my college bookstore. This is the textbook for a basic Human Relations class that is required for all students at the community college I attend. Human Relations is not my strongest skill so I was actually looking forward to the class and the book, expecting some information that might help me at work. Unfortunately I am really disappointed in the class and the book. The information is SO basic and obvious. It is useless to me. This is an actual quote from the book, from chapter two, which describes differences between people, one of which is VALUES:

"Under the best of circumstances, the values of employees mesh with those required by the job. When this state of congruence exists, job performance is likely to be higher. A national survey of managers investigated the fit between the values of managers and those of their organizations. (One such mesh would be a highly ethical person working for a highly ethical firm.) A major finding was that managers who experienced a good fit were more successful and more likely to believe that they could reach their career goals. They were also more confident about remaining with their present firm and more willing to work long hours."

Wow. Amazing. Who would have thunk it? And I am really glad they gave an example of a match between employee values and company values (highly ethical is a match with highly ethical, so I guess if they are the same that means they match!) That is about as educational as me telling you that when I don't hate my boss I am less likely to want to punch him in the neck. I don't know what else to say. This book is a pathetic waste of my time, money and thought processes, and I feel sorry for you if, like me, you are required to read it. Honestly, I actually keep re-reading it, thinking I must be missing the point, that there must be more to it, that it can't be so lame and pointless.... But it is!

THERE HAS TO BE A BETTER HUMAN RELATIONS TEXTBOOK OUT THERE!!!

By the way, I am also taking another class called "Business Communication" that covers similar topics. The book we are using for that class is EXCELLENT: "Business Communication: Process & Product", by Mary Ellen Guffey (5th Edition). I am so grateful to have a good textbook like that one, because unfortunately crummy books like "Human Relations" by DuBrin are all too common.

5 out of 5 stars Human Relations on the Street.......2000-08-30

I purchased this book as a required text book in one of my Criminal Justice classes. I thought it very strange to have a Human Relations text book as a requirement, but after getting into the text found it very appropriate for police work. The author points out a plethora of facts that would help anyone dealing with people on a day to day basis. It is not a large textbook, is packed full of ideas, and is easy to follow. Class time was kept at a minimum, and no extra help was needed from my professor. I believe this text would definitely be bookshelf material for those of you dealing with the public.
