The dramatic story of the revival of a television legend.

The Doctors last gasp????.......2003-04-08
This is an excellent book which chronicles many of the most awful, proposed adaptations of Doctor Who which never made it to American television. The end result was a somewhat entertaining `96 TV movie which tries to capture the fun and spirit of the much loved show but still falls slightly short.
At every stage, at every turn with every proposal the BBC was looking to charge any production company for every miniscule reference to the original series feeling they could make a fortune if they charged by the letter.
Clearly as you read this book and look at the artwork there was the possibility that in migrating to American televison Doctor Who could've advanced to a more grown up type of SF tv show with the benefit of higher production values and writers willing to take chances.
The Fox network known for the sucess of the X-Files had a potential winner here if they could take advantage of the tremendous continuity they show posesses. Sadly, it seems the BBC will not allow this racehorse out of the starting gate.
"The things one must know".......2002-11-18
Co-written by Gary Russell, producer of Big Finish's "Doctor Who" audios and editor of "The Art of The Fellowship of the Ring," and Philip Segal, producer of the 1996 "Doctor Who" TV-movie, this book is a fascinating account of a period of "Who" history that is otherwise poorly documented. The book presents the history of how Segal secured the rights to make the TV-movie, the writing of the three very different scripts it went through, and the concepts for the new series which it was hoped that the first of those scripts, that by John Leekley, would launch -- a series that would have constituted an entire "rebooting" of the "Doctor Who" saga, and might have included remakes of classic serials from the original series. Embellished with beautiful and fascinating concept art, this book will be a riveting and enjoyable read for any "Doctor Who" fan.
Wonderful read and very insightful.......2002-07-26
I found this book to be a wonderful addition to the Howe-Stammers-Walker series The 60's, 70's and 80's. Although not necessarily written the the same style, it does pick up where The 80's left off and continues the story of the production of Doctor Who.
Just as fascinating to me was the account of all the trials and tribulations that incurred as Philip Segal attempted to secure rights to produce the project. Given all the hassles that he had to deal with, especially America Executives ideas of what constitutes as a good story, I think Doctor Who fans were blessed by what finally appeared on television. Could the movie been better? Possibly...but I admire it and appreciate all the more after reading this wonderful account.
A keepsake packed with fine color photos.......2001-10-14
In 1996 over nine million Britains tuned in to watch the new Dr. Who science fiction TV show. Doctor Who: Regeneration charts the show's history and its newly revamped appearance, providing insights into television politics and the challenges involved in returning Dr. Who to new audiences. Prior fans of the series will consider this a keepsake packed with fine color photos.
The triumphs and tribulations of making a TV movie.......2001-01-16
'Regeneration' is the story of the 1996 Doctor Who TV movie, as told by producer Philip Segal with additional material by Gary Russell. Although, given that the two authors' contributions are in different typefaces, one must assume that the credits have been negotiated Hollywood-style since Mr. Russell certainly contributed more words.
This book probably has a limited audience (although some people would say "It's a Doctor Who book! Of course it's only got a limited audience!"), and it is hard for me to imagine exactly who it is for.
I found it interesting enough, but tales of negotiating a particular property, no matter how interested I am in that property, through the maze of TV production really isn't my kind of thing.
Information on discarded versions of the story (and I'm so glad they were discarded!) are probably the most interesting part of the book for me.
I also found the very different ways of expressing themselves employed by Messrs. Segal and Russell interesting to read, but unless you have an interest in the content then that's hardly going to get you in.
If you are interested in Doctor Who as a TV show (as opposed to the story told on the TV show), or interested in the internal politicking of TV production, this may be the book for you.
Book Description
Kate O'Beirne is fed up with women who make the world worse.
Fueled by their persecution fantasies, modern feminists have been calling for radical social engineering to eliminate any differences between the sexes. They insist that any sex differences are the result of social construction, not biology. So they want boys and men to be reprogrammed and treated for their pathology.
Many of these women are public figures who use their notoriety in acting, pop music, television, or politics to spout unfounded bad ideas and harebrained schemes: Jane Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg, Hillary Clinton, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Maureen Dowd, and many more.
Kate O'Beirne captures the radical feminists in their own words, explains why they've got it all wrong, and shows why they have to be stoppedbefore they do even more damage to our schools, families, workplaces, and sports. BACKCOVER: Anyone still operating under the delusion that `feminist' is synonymous with `pro-woman' should find this [book] a useful reality check.
The Wall Street Journal
Thank you, Kate O'Beirne! With wit and smarts she drives a stake through the heart of radical feminism, naming names, and takes down the modern sisterhood in a fearless, funny, and factual way. And it's long overdue. Know your enemy. Buy this gutsy book!
Rush Limbaugh
What a romp of a book. Funny and smart and typical of the shrewd, informed analysis we relish from Kate O'Beirne.
Peggy Noonan, author of John Paul the Great
Once again, Kate O'Beirne's insights on politics and the culture make us think, laugh, and stand up and cheer. Rolling back the influence of the false prophets of feminism and `grrrrrl power' takes facts, passion, and intellectall of which we find in this important book.
Laura Ingraham, author of Shut Up & Sing
Some women protest,`I'm a feminist, just not a radical feminist.' Kate O'Beirne is impatient with such qualifications. She is not any kind of feminist, and when you finish her sparkling new book, Women Who Make the World Worse, you won't be one either.
Mona Charen, syndicated columnist
Women Who Make the World Worse is, to be sure, an entertaining, often humorous exposé of the modernist feminist movement, but at the same time, it's a sober wake-up call.
David Limbaugh, syndicated columnist
O'Beirne brings wit and common sense to bear on the weird and rancorous world of orthodox feminism
she has written a rousing, scintillating, and badly needed book.

I am a woman, and I am sick of these feminist.......2007-07-16
I am a woman, and I do not beleive I am inferior to man. However, there is physical differences. I would prefer the man and woman fire fighters be separated. Let the feminist have their own ladder company that serve their own neighborhood. I want to see how the rest of the world react to that. I would move out of the female firefighter serve neighborhood so fast that it will leave skid marks on the road. Let the male and female army serve separated, and see which one perform better. If females can and will perform at the same level as the man, by all mean, serve as they please. However, if the standards has to be lower to accommodate anyone, I would prefer to have the top guys to protect me instead of the mediocra feminist that relied heavily on the man. It is a really sad thing to be equal regardless of the ability of different gender.
Best Book of 2006!.......2007-07-15
Disregard the paranoid propaganda commentary above, "back to I Love Lucy". Radical feminists don't want you to think for yourselves. They want to teach your college students "The Vagina Monologues" and turn males in girls.
The best parts of this book concerns Title IX, why more females attend college than males. The book exposes Justice Ginsberg as a baby-hating radical from the ACLU. This is a book you're not supposed to read (a nod to the PIG books).
Readers of this should know about the online army of feminists who strategically trashed O'Beirne's book: "First of all I want to thank everyone who aided in the sacking of Kate O'Beirne's book Women Who Make the World Worse over at Amazon..."
You can locate that in a Google search for 'women who make world worse', it'll be the 8th hit on the Search Result page.
Makes a Few Good Points, But They are Widely Scattered.......2007-06-01
I was sorry to discover, upon reading this book, that my wife and I went about raising our daughter incorrectly. Had we known, I am sure we would have done things differently. After all, she is only first in her class in high school, athletic, well liked, respected and being courted by top colleges while still in her sophomore year. I suppose, if we followed this authors advice, she would have been a better person, although I fail to see how.
The author believes, strongly, that women should stay home from work to raise children, no matter what the cost. Since I was the one to stay home, as my wife earned about 40% more than I at the time, we were putting our daughter at risk. In addition, we put her at risk by putting her into a limited day care, even though my daughter enjoyed it and wanted to continue when we attempted to pull her out. The author makes it clear that we should have moved from our house to an apartment, and given up our standard of living to allow my wife to stay home and me to continue work. That would have been what was best for our daughter. There is not alternate method allowed in her world.
Then there is the issue of sexual discrimination, which does not occur according to this author. It can't occur, other than on a limited basis, because market forces would keep it from occurring. Companies need women, and if discrimination were happening, women would quit, which would leave companies understaffed. If that were the case, I guess when my wife was told, during a performance review, that all women belonged at home taking care of the children and not working in corporate America, she was hearing things. In the author's world, that didn't occur, and neither did the large settlement from the company after the manager's treatment of women employees was exposed.
I could go on, but I think you get the point. There is an old saying about lies, damned lies and statistics, and it fits this book well. Much of it is the author's own view, with little to substantiate the opinion. The author misses the point, for the most part, that all people are not the same and that one size does not fit all. It is fine that she wishes to lead her life in the fashion that she does, but she makes no allowance for others to lead theirs in a different manner. If they do, they will fail themselves, their children, etc.
The author does, on occasion, make valid points, but they are too few and too far apart to make the book a worthwhile read, unless you want to lead a life trapped in the 1950s. While I agree that the feminist movement has gone over the edge, they have also done a lot to move the country forward and there is no credit given for that work.
A REAL EYE-OPENER!.......2007-05-13
A very important work on how radical feminism infiltrates American society to seduce it into grave moral decay, and speeds it down that "slippery slope".
O'Beirne is a mature woman who is funny, smart, and shrewd. She presents revealing insights into America's politics and culture, and how a small radical minority (among other radical minorities) with a squeaky wheel can do so much damage to the majority (us), who naively remains silent because we are too wrapped up in ourselves and our families to pay attention to the rug that is being pulled from under our feet.
With facts, passion, intellect, and courage, O'Beirne calls this menace to our society to task. This book is a breath of fresh air at a pivotal point in our nation's well being, not only for ourselves but also for our children and future generations.
A nicely done overview of modern feminism's effects.......2007-03-21
I must say that I didn't think much of the jacket illustration, and I think that a better title could have been selected. But, the content of this book is first-rate and O'Beirne did a really god job researching her material and carefully citing which feminist said or wrote what and how they are mainstream and powerful within our culture and not on the 'fringe' of feminism. She also carefully identifies the main issues impacting the culture and the lives of people.
O'Beirne also cites some other good anti-feminist works and I've read all of them and I agree they are well worth studying.
I am pleased to see that there are quite a few women today - many of them EX-feminist - who have come to see what a crock feminism is and to see it's evil effects on marriage, the family, children, men, women, and on culture and society. I used to think that most women would just not speak up about it, but many have - although it has taken them a while to get around to it.
A feminist woman I know, saw me reading the book and she immediately started attacking it. All of her objections were wrong and I corrected each false assumption she made. She wound up fuming and stomped off. Well, that's ok I guess, this book isn't for everyone - but thank goodness these feminists are dwindling in number!
I hope that O'Beirne writes most books in this area. We need more writers like her.

Book Description
Universally popular, the "mind sport" of checkers is one of the world's oldest board games, and one of the most elegantly structured. Although children can readily understand its most basic rules, on a higher level checkers can demand great depth of strategic thought. Put your skill to the test with these puzzles--all based on the standard American game. (Federation rules appear in their entirety.) Each is winningly solvable in no more than six and a half moves, and often less by the player who goes first. In numerous problems, the winner even seems at a serious disadvantage at the start. Quite a few of the solutions list alternative patterns of play that depend on the moves chosen by the player destined to lose.

Fully Worth the Money Spent.......2004-12-04
Wow - what a fun book that was! This book has so many well thought out problems, that your game has to improve the first time through. I've been through this book several times now, increasing my speed (and mostly my technique) while getting as much enjoyment as the first time through. When using my newly acquired skills in real games, I've "Dazzled" more than a couple of players; having your opponent say "I didn't even see that coming" is a direct result of the insight gained reading this book. This book seemed free of errors (i.e. all problems were solvable and all problem numbers matched their corresponding solution number). I look at a checker board with a little more confidence now, and take my hat off to Robert Pike. I would recommend this book to anyone without reservation.
A Quick Road to Improvement.......2002-05-21
The 370 puzzles in this book will keep you occupied for some time and will greatly improve your play. Do yourself a favor and work through each one carefully, resorting to the solutions only if you are absolutely desperate. Most of these can be solved mentally, but in some cases the use of board and pieces will make the concepts more clear. The small pocket size format of the book makes it very good to take along and use during down-time such as waiting for doctors appointments and the like. The serious student of checkers really ought to have this book.
Little Giant Encyclopedia of Checker Puzzles.......2002-04-14
Yike! Sure hope I'm the only one at the Old Fogies Senior Center with this book.I'll be the champ in no time.
Book Description
A Peacock in the Land of Penguins echoes the dilemma facing businesses across the country -- how to manage the increasing diversity of the workforce and how to capture the talent, creativity, energy, and commitment of all employees. Written in a charming, engaging style, the book is a fable about a peacock who struggles to be itself while surrounded by penguins. Can these seemingly opposite birds work productively together? This new, expanded edition of the international bestseller will help managers understand and maximize the potential of their workforce.

Great reverse psychology.......2006-10-20
This book helped me greatly to determine what was happening in my life at a particular time in my office and its personnel structure. It takes you trhought the characters on a journey of office environments and the typical personalities found therein. I do not have anything but praise for this title. A great read, jovial, and humorous it is a definite buy.
Gag me with a spoon.......2006-07-17
This text so oversimplifies identity issues that it is at once insipid and offensive. The "solution" at the end? We should all just accept that everybody does things differently. Or, in other words: Can't we all just get along? If this insight really requires several dozen pages of poor writing and saccharine pseudo-innocence, we're in worse trouble than I thought.
Dealing with corporate culture in "bird-style".......2002-12-31
As I grow up to involve with more complex problems, a mean to solve or just demonstrate the problem becomes simpler -fables or parables. Many parables came out. Mostly are "change-and-corporate" and "animal-related". Ranged from monkey (The One Minute Manager Meets the Monkey, 0688103804), mouse (Who Moved My Cheese?, 0399144463), Fish! (0786866020), frog (Eat That Frog! 1583762027), and now it is the time for bird, peacock and penguins.
This book is about corporate culture (Penguins) and how to deal with the culture (by exotic birds, including a peacock). It is quite boring at the beginning and I found it's interesting about 1/3 of the book. After 1/3 of the book I keep debating myself if I should follow the penguin's rules or be an exotic bird. The author did good job to keep reader figure out what the story should go to.
The weak point of this book comes into 3 issues, book organization (after first half), the application parts (tip and trick), and theory behind story. After those exotic birds found Land of Opportunity, I feel like the author couldn't figure out how to end a story nicely. The author adding the tip &trick parts, which I found it's too mundane to add to this kind of elegant book, can also support this statement. Unlike other animal-parable story, this book has no principle to deal with the situation. Although it's not wrong, but if the author just rewrites the book with philosophy focused on other exotic birds' theory, it would make this book billion copies sold.
I recommend this book to the new comers who join century-found corporate. However, please read with warning and find other support books, such as Fish!. Otherwise, you will end up with another frustration experience as you're facing now.

Great Resource for Diversity Training.......2002-04-22
I am an attorney practicing labor and employment law and have used this book in diversity training. It is the best I have read, and believe it conveys the benefits of diversity in a simple and easy to understand way. All levels of employees, from rank and file to top executives, can (and in my experience do)relate to its message.
Book Description
In this delightful corporate fable, vivid imagery portrays a story that is unfolding each and every day in organizations across the country as they attempt to manage the increasing diversity of the workforce and capture the talent, energy, and commitment of all employees. Hateley and Schmidt show readers what can happen when we try to express ourselves in a chilly corporate culture.
Based on the experiences of real people, A Peacock in the Land of Penguins follows the adventures of Perry the Peacock and other exotic birds as they try to make their way in the Land of Penguins. Their story is both entertaining and enlightening. It is a tale of the perils and possibilities of being "different" in a world that values comfort, safety, and the predictability of conformity. Through the medium of a fable, this book helps readers see what can happen when we try to express ourselves fully and courageously in a chilly corporate culture.

Diversity Without Defensiveness.......2000-09-01
I finally got around to reading this bestseller and now understand why it's sold so many copies. The beauty of this little book is that it gets at important diversity issues that are often emotionally "loaded" for people, but without making people defensive. I find that many people have set up psychological fences around their attitudes toward race, gender and ethnicity. They've been admonished often enough on these topics that they find it hard to listen anymore. By presenting a charming fable about a peacock and penguins, Hately and Schmidt avoid those fences and get directly and powerfully at the essence of the experience of being different--and about the ways that people respond to differences. This second edition contains the 111-page fable from the first edition, plus 15 additional pages of guidance and resources on how to deal with differences. Even with the additional material, it is a very quick read. Reading carefully, it only took me about 45 minutes to read the fable, and another 10 or 15 minutes to get through the new material. This book would be a perfect pre-work assignment for a workshop on diversity.
Accurately depicts the perspectives of the 'diverse'........1998-02-13
I couldn't believe such a complex issue was presented in such a simple manner. I think it should be required reading for all of Corporate America as diversity goes way beyond black and white. How about women, Christians, non-Christians, degreed, non-degreed, conservatives, liberals, moderates, etc? The list is endless. Excellent reading!

But, get the second edition, so you can take advantage of the 15 pages of identifiers, tools and processes that will take you from figuring out where you are to figuring out how to get where you want to go.
If you ARE a corporation or lodge or church or school, read the SECOND EDITION only if you're willing to be "dislodged" as appropriate!

The best 15 minutes youýll spend in redevelopment this year!.......1997-01-02
BJ's lively parable is a charming instructor, a souvenir of a memorable exploration of "fitting in" and a companion showing that we are not only NOT ALONE in the world, but that the very things about us that make us feel most alone make us also MOST VALUABLE.
Perry the Peacock's imaginatively illustrated and delightful story suits children of all ages and adults connected with organizations of any kind-business, non-profit, social services, etc.
Fifteen pages of identifiers, resources and strategies make this second edition a book you will buy by the dozen rather than loan out.
