Decalogue.......2000-07-17
This 10 episode masterpiece is now available on DVD, at a reasonable price. Many of us would like to study this work. The publisher should be encouraged to reprint the Kieslowski/Piesiewicz book.
an interesting book about an interesting ideal.......2000-04-11
this was a very intriguing book based on, what i have been told, a series of short films directed by the author. i have not watched the films, but if they are as good as this book makes them out to be, i really would like to watch them. i would recommend this book to anyone interested in an interesting concept, such as basing films on the ten commandments, and probably anyone who enjoyed the films would enjoy this book as well.
Amazing, Chilling, Odd.......2000-03-30
Krysztof Kieslowski interprets the Ten Commandments through ten short sketches of modern day lives. Each sketch corresponds to how an individual grapples with one of the biblical commandments. Riveting in writing as well as on-screen.

Book Description
In this work, Dan Lioy first investigates the biblical concept of the law. He then conducts a thoroughgoing analysis of the Decalogue and the Sermon on the Mount. He gives particular attention to the connection between these two great bodies of biblical literature. The result is a comprehensive study that argues for the enduring relevance of the moral law. This volume is appropriate for personal study and is also suitable as a college and seminary text.
Book Description
"The Decalogue" provides an entertaining way to memorize the Ten Commandments. The book comes with twenty-five tiles to cut out, each containing a portion of one of the Ten Commandments. These tiles are then used to solve a series of puzzles. Each puzzle has numerous solutions, so the book can be enjoyed over and over again. After a while, you'll realize you've not only had a good time, but you've learned the Ten Commandments.

Book Description
The document known as The Ten Commandments, more formally referred to as The Decalogue, remains among the most controversial and complicated passages in the Hebrew Bible. Even today, the twentieth chapter of Exodus continues to serve as a major religious and ethical icon within popular culture and religious communities, despite its many unexplained elements. Lawsuits over the display of Decalogue Tablets have occupied courtrooms in more than half the states of this country. And yet, few people understand that there is not one, but three versions of what are usually called "The Ten Commandments." Moreover, when their ideological underpinnings are examined closely, these versions prove to be quite antithetical to one another. Even fewer are aware of the probability that these documents were written very late in the history of biblical literature-indeed, so late as to constitute a literary afterthought in the development of Israelite ethnic self-definition. In Etched in Stone: The Emergence of the Decalogue Tradition, Aaron examines the question of when the Decalogue versions were written and why. The main focus of this book is the literary phenomenon known as "the tablets" and how it functioned within the broader narrative. Aaron argues not only that the inclusion of the Decalogue texts was quite late in the development of the Pentateuch's canon, but that their integration preserves vestiges of highly charged ideological conflicts that were inadvertently neutralized by the rather bland and generic ethical precepts coined among its verses. Etched in Stone provides a paradigm for merging a variety of critical methods (source criticism, tradition criticism, ideological criticism, redaction criticism) and literary approaches that have heretofore been under-explored. In this sense, Etched in Stone will be read by scholars for its far-reaching conclusions and used by students (undergraduates, seminary, graduate) for learning approaches to the sequencing of biblical materials.

Book Description
A plucky “titian-haired” sleuth solved her first mystery in 1930. Eighty million books later, Nancy Drew has survived the Depression, World War II, and the sixties (when she was taken up with a vengeance by women’s libbers) to enter the pantheon of American girlhood. As beloved by girls today as she was by their grandmothers, Nancy Drew has both inspired and reflected the changes in her readers’ lives. Here, in a narrative with all the vivid energy and page-turning pace of Nancy’s adventures, Melanie Rehak solves an enduring literary mystery: Who created Nancy Drew? And how did she go from pulp heroine to icon?
The brainchild of children’s book mogul Edward Stratemeyer, Nancy was brought to life by two women: Mildred Wirt Benson, a pioneering journalist from Iowa, and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, a well-bred wife and mother who took over as CEO after her father died. In this century-spanning story, Rehak traces their roles—and Nancy’s—in forging the modern American woman.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-09-23
Though I was a huge Nancy Drew fan as a kid, I was rather underwhelmed by this book. I thought the writing was poor and the book as a whole was pretty boring.
An Absolute Treasure!.......2007-09-17
As an avid Nancy Drew fan, this book did not disappoint! I had known about the Stratemeyer Syn., Harriet S. Adams, and Mildred Wirt Benson, but to be able to take the journey back into history and see how the Nancy Drew books came to be, as well as many others that the Syn. wrote, was priceless. The incredible amount of time and effort that author Melanie Rehak took to research this book shows and Girl Sleuth a definate MUST for any Nancy Drew fan. I only have one question for the author . .where is Mildren Wirt Benson's only daughter, Peggy Wirt, now?
A lively biography--but could go deeper as a feminist/cultural analysis.......2007-09-17
Like many of the other reviewers of Melanie Rehak's "Girl Sleuth," I liked this book and found it a fast-paced read. Rehak enjoys her subject matter and has done good research on the two women (Mildred Wirt Benson and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams) who helped create and sustain the Nancy Drew character.
Rehak is good at showing the less charismatic aspects of Wirt Benson and Stratemeyer Adams and still allowing them to emerge as people we care about. In Rehak's portrayal, Wirt Benson was feisty, strong-willed woman who had genuine sisterly feeling for the Nancy Drew she brought to life--whom she also modeled on herself.
I especially like Rehak's discussion of Wirt Benson's struggles to make her writing economically sustainable for herself and her ailing husband. In one great passage, Rehak writes about Wirt typing madly away on a manuscript when a can of condensed milk explodes on her stove, sending sticky milk onto the ceiling and convincing Wirt and her husband that they needed to move to a better apartment!
"Girl Sleuth" has its limitations, though, especially as a feminist and cultural critique. While Rehak presents Nancy Drew as a hero that feminists can love, she minimizes the feminist message of her book by using dismissive terms like "women's libbers." Why not just say feminists? More problematically, Rehak spends little time discussing the overt racism that exists in nearly every Nancy Drew book prior to the series' revision in the late 1950s. This racism and ethnocentrism is preserved in the recently republished copies of several of the original 1930s Nancy Drew books, where, for example, in the first book in the series, "The Secret of the Old Clock," Nancy encounters a "Negro caretaker" whose eyes glisten with drunkenness and who speaks in a nearly unintelligible drawl. In a later book in the original series, "The Mystery at Lilac Inn," Nancy Drew is disappointed in the applicant for a new housekeeper, a "colored woman" who is described as unkempt, shuffling, and disorganized. These passages are so disturbing that many present-day readers will find them reason to close the books and move on, grateful that the series received an updated treatment in later decades.
Rehak does devote several pages to the fact that--as early as the 1940s--readers had written to Grosset & Dunlap to protest against the racism in the publisher's books. But Rehak makes very few specific references to actual racially-stereotyped characters or plot events in the Nancy Drew books. (Her main example of awful stereotyping is from a book in the Hardy Boys series.) As a result, "Girl Sleuth" comes across as avoiding the serious cultural and racial problems in the Nancy Drew books. As an author whose avowed theme is feminism, shouldn't Rehak be focused on exactly those areas?
"Girl Sleuth" is a pretty good book. It sent me back to my shelf of Nancy Drews that I had sped through as a pre-teen in the 1970s. But as an in-depth cultural critique, and a true feminist analysis, Rehak's book does not always deliver.
Sparkling biography.......2007-08-13
This was a well-written, fast-paced biography of fictional Nancy Drew and the two women who primarily wrote about her: Harriet Stratemeyer Adams and Mildred Wirt Benson. Benson emerges as the more sympathetic, though both women exemplify the confidence and perseverance for which Nancy is famous. I also learned many interesting tidbits about history and feminism.
My only complaint was that the book started slowly, and didn't really address Nancy Drew as a topic until page 92 or so. The chapter on Harriet's college years at Wellesley was particularly excruciating, aside from an entertaining bit where Harriet, in a Nancy-like turn, exhibits bravery under pressure when a fire hits an important building at Wellesley. Other than the slow beginning, however, the book was perfect -- and may even spike Nancy Drew sales.
Girl Sleuth.......2007-01-12
Fasinating, well written book with extensive backgrounds on the series' and characters' creator, and the first women who authored the series. Amazingly, it wasn't Carolyn Keene, nor was there ever a Carolyn Keene! Any Nancy fan, from any era, will love this book.
Customer Reviews:
Solidly Researched and Well-Written.......2006-10-13
I recently checked this out of the library to read & enjoyed it thoroughly. It is, as the title says, a history of the Nancy Drew series. It focusses primarily on the 2 women who did most of the writing for the first several books--Harriet Adams and Mildred Wirt.
If you're like me, after learning that Carolyn Keene didn't exist (and being terribly disappointed by this), you learned that Nancy had 2 "mothers"; the "good" mother was Mildred Wirt, who wrote an independent, confident heroine; the "bad" mother was Harriet Adams who rewrote the books to domesticate her.
It is, of course, far more complicated than that. Mildred Wirt was a splendidly independent woman herself, and she had a lot to do with the creation of the Nancy we all know and love. Harriet Adams, however, was also quite independent: She was running the Stratmeyer Syndicate in a time when women just didn't head companies.
Making these matters clear is one of Rehak's strengths. She's also clearly a dedicated and careful researcher and--more rare--someone who can write prose you want to readl
Customer Reviews:
Mostly used for the painting tips.......2007-01-04
I think this is the edition of this I have, mine has different cover art. When I was more into the miniatures aspect of role playing games, I bought this book. The system for miniatures battles is very straightfoward. Painting tips are mostly for painting multiple miniatures at the same time, but there are tips on customizing individual figures. This product did help me with painting miniatures, but wasn't quite as useful otherwise.
Good rules for fighting that war you've always wanted..........1998-06-18
The rules are passable for a miniature game, but as a set of mass combat rules for AD&D, it works well. It was listed as a 2nd Ed. game, but it is seriously lacking in the area of magic: none of the spells from TOM are here, and very few from the PHB. There are resources available on the net to help, just search with the word BATTLESYSTEM. If you can find a copy, and you wish to dive into miniatures, this is a good start. TSR/WOTC has no plans to re-issue this game, but if they received letters from fans demanding it be brought back... Check the local game conventions for a game and try it. If TSR/WOTC refuses to re-print this classic, they may make it available on the web. Good luck.

A wider view of diversity.......2007-05-07
This is a great book if you're looking for direction in how to get the word out about Diversity. It goes beyond the physical differences and has the reader think about diversity in a broader sense. I like the systems thinking that was throughout the book - to successfully implement diversity throughout the organization, the top influencers and decision makers must support the effort as well as including people from across the organization. This book is well-written with golden nuggets throughout.
After Reading Many Diversity Books I Didn't Expect Much New.......2003-12-04
After reading so many diversity books, I wasn't expecting to get much more from this one. But I was pleasantly surprised. This book takes a more pragmatic approach to the topic than others. It is less esoteric and more of a how-to book with a very strong conceptual framework borrowed from the change management field. I actually liked reading it and have found it to be very helpful in my work as a diversity council chairperson.
Come on!.......2001-04-09
Lets begin by analyzing the concept that this book is based upon: " Implementing Diversity". Who cares about diversity? Business is about getting the best people to perform. There is no color. No diversity. Nothing but performance! No performance, no business! It's books like this that give reading a bad name. My only question is how publishers can publish this garbage?
A Great Addition to My Loden Library!.......2000-07-28
Every five years it seems Marilynn Loden has a new book with something original and important to say in it. I loved Feminine Leadership (book #1) and am amazed at how relevant it remains today. Work Force America (#2) was also ahead of its time. And now Implementing Diversity (#3). This is a no b.s. guide for consultants and change agents who want to build inclusive, cooperative workplaces without a mountain of backlash. The ideas and models really work. I hope this author keeps them coming!
Must Read Framework For Getting Started.......2000-05-02
I am co-leading an internal regional diversity effort for Hewitt Associates (a human resources consulting firm). Our team includes about 10+ members and this book was handed out after our first meeting together last November. It gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from all team members and we are including as part of our "new member kit". The book does an incredible job walking you through the basics and is very practical in it's application. It's not paint by numbers, but provides a great conceptual framework for understanding what's involved, the issues/acceptance you'll encounter in going out with a program, and proves very helpful in developing a strategy and action plan to make your efforts successful. This book was recommended to our team by an outside consultant we are using. We have had much success to date in working with leadership and rolling out our efforts among all associates in the region. This book has provided great conceptual framing for all our efforts. We will also likely order copies for our senior leadership group to start them on their journey!
Book Description
At the Rio Summit in 1992, the nations of the world adopted the Global Biological Diversity Convention, and 120 countries have since ratified it. At present, however, the convention acts as a framework only, with little in the way of binding language or substantive obligations. The time has come for the international community to develop the institutions and obligations which will give real effect to the aspirations of the convention, and to ensure that the lofty language of the text has some real effect at ground level.
This book describes the nature of the issues now before the international community, the gaps in the Convention which remain to be filled, and the ways in which the international community can reach agreement on those gaps. Tim Swanson begins with an overview of the issues. He then develops the basic nature of the problems within a bio-economic framework, presenting the decline of diversity as the result of the development process and its management within the same context. The second part of the book describes the nature of the solutions required to address the problems, and the ways in which they can be adapted within the framework of the convention, with detailed explanations of the concepts involved.
The biodiversity convention represents an unprecedented opportunity for the development of institutions and policies which will help foster an alternative path to development. It is an opportunity which should not be wasted
