Book Description
David Lean was one of the greatest moviemakers of the twentieth century. He had an astonishing career that spanned six decades and included such diverse classics of the cinematic age as Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on the River Kwai, Dr Zhivago and A Passage to India. Here, Lady Lean has written a highly personal account of her late husband's life and work, combining the testimony of David's friends and colleagues with over 300 images, many of which are previously unpublished. David Lean - An Intimate Portrait is a unique, often moving study of an extraordinary man, whose work continues to entertain millions around the world and who is still perceived by many in the cinema industry today as the ultimate film-maker.

A Treasure to Explore Again and Again.......2002-04-17
David Lean is the greatest filmmaker that ever lived. This book is a great chronicle of his life. A brilliantly detailed account of both his personal and private lives. Many previously unpublished photographs. A stunning achievement by his last wife. A loving devotion to the master. This book is rich with many details of the 'lost years' between Ryan's Daughter and A Passage to India, and the attempts to make the story of Captain Bligh, and Conrad's Nostromo. (What films they would be!) The book explores the many friendships Lean held with those that worked with him, from Robert Bolt to John Box to his closest and most interesting pal, Eddie Fowlie. The book blends terrific photos as well as a very detailed text. A beautifully constructed book made with highgrade materials. A true gift from Lady Lean. Highly recommended! A wonderful companion piece to Brownlow's biography of the master. Buy this book now. Don't wait. Thank you.

Over 30 contributors share their expertise on the chemical, biological, cultural, psychological, and experiential dimensions of psilocybin mushrooms
• Describes in vivid detail the consciousness-expanding experiences of psychoactive mushroom users
• Provides firsthand accounts of the controversial Harvard Psilocybin Project, including the Concord Prison and Good Friday studies
Teonanácatl was the name given to the visionary mushrooms used in ancient Mesoamerican shamanic ceremonies, mushrooms that contain psilocybin, the psychoactive agent identified by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD. The rediscovery of these visionary mushrooms by the Mazatec healer Maria Sabina and mycologist R. Gordon Wasson ignited a worldwide mushroom culture that inspired the consciousness revolution of the 1960s.
This book describes in vivid detail the consciousness-expanding experiences of psychoactive mushroom users--from artists to psychologists--and the healing visionary inspiration they received. It provides firsthand accounts of studies performed in the controversial Harvard Psilocybin Project, including the Concord Prison study and the Good Friday study. It describes how the use of the psilocybe mushroom spread from the mountains of Mexico into North America, Asia, and Europe by seekers of consciousness-expanding experiences. It also details how psilocybin has been used since the 1960s in psychotherapy, prisoner rehabilitation, the enhancement of creativity, and the induction of mystical experiences and is being studied as a treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).

Good info but pieced together.......2007-03-30
This book, like the one on Ayauascha, is edited by Ralph Metzner and is a collection of articles and essays on sacred mushrooms. The content is a bit too clinical, two articles by psychologists which are very dry. I guess if you have not read any of McKenna's stuff you might get something here. The book is saved from boredom by some good information on the chemistry of the active ingredients and by some of the stories of peoples journeys with the fungi teachers.
So while I would include this book in an exhaustive reading list on shroomology I would not start here. If you are more intrested in the experiential side of things better to start with Mushroom Wisdom: How Shamans Cultivate Spiritual Consciousness by Martin W. Ball. That book will get you more into the head of the mushroom shaman and how to approach these spiritual beings. If you are looking for additional philosophical musings you can't go wrong with most anything McKenna has done. And don't forget to check in on articles, videos, and books by Paul Stamets. So all in all this book did have some good information but was not much fun reading.
Knowledgeable!!!.......2006-09-20
If you are interested in,mind expansion,consciousness,psychedelics,religious/mystical experiences, the un-tapped part of the psyche, and the magic of Psilocybin mushrooms that tap you into that part, then you will love this book!!!

This is the famous Phoenix Programmed Learning system in 6,000 schools in workbook format, and approved in every state. This is the 21st Centurys Electronic Interactive method.
Phonics instruction at it's best. While honoring the proven phonics approach to reading instruction, The Reading Game goes further. Linguistics research shows there is a hierarchy of certain letter combinations most useful in beginning reading. The words Reading Game students first encounter use the most profitable letter combinations. They learn to recognize and use one sound for each new letter. Beginning students confidence grows as they attain a firm grasp of sound-symbol relationships. Every time they encounter a familiar sequence of letters they build confidence in pronouncing the sounds in words.
As students progress through the material, the new sounds keep building until each student has a large reading vocabulary. Moreover, this approach gives new readers the confidence and ability to transfer these reading skills to new words not taught within the Reading Game.
The audio-visual CD presents many words and sentences orally so that students hear and see both. The student controls the speed and progress through the game. Thus, the student uses visual and auditory senses- combined with hands-on interaction the best possible combination for beginning reading success.

the previous reviewer has obviously never read this book.......2006-02-01
I am a HUGE fan of Yu-Gi-Oh (see my review for The YuGiOh Movie for more info) and have come to rely on Prima's strategy guides (especially this one) for many occasions. Prima's has done it again, cataloging all the cards you would ever need to build a supremely kick-ass deck and then a lot more. I actually built my deck based on the suggestions found in this catalog and have built, as I have previously mentioned, a truly kick-ass deck. In fact, the deck that I won my first tournament with was constructed from the Prima's guide. For both newcomers to the duelist realm and veterans of the craze, this is the definite catalog for you.
Authors don't understand the Yugioh Card Game..........2003-12-17
The book is a good reference for 'viewing' all cards available. If you want to simply view all cards and not go any further, this book is for you. This product seriously lacks the passion of the game. i.e Heart of the Cards.
If you're looking for a book to give a enlightened view into the current card playing landscape and how each card may affect the landscape or a particular deck class (beatdown, card control, exodia, ect) this book will make you un-happy.
The Authors of the book seriously show their ignorance of the game as a strategey guide. Prima thought they could push out another title and serously under-estimates the Yugioh card environment.
I play Yugioh with my son weekly. We laughed at this book. It gathers dust on my shelf. I would strongly suggest the 'Pojo' set of Yugioh book guides.
Could Be Better.......2003-11-03
The primary reason that I give a lower rating is that the text is not legible. For monsters, this is understandable and forgiveable. For others, it is not.
Some of the tips are useful, but many are trite. Still, that helped bring up the overall rating.
There are nine cards per page with each card having these:
+ card type
+ monster type
+ attribute
+ level
+ ATK
+ DEF
+ rarity
+ editorial comments
Add a brief set of rules, table of contents and index and that is about all there is. The other things that I expected were things that I mentioned above. I also expected a list of what constitutes the different rarity ratings. This certainly should be in this book, but was not. I will provide an estimate here:
C : Common
X : only in structure decks or starter decks
R : Rare (card name in silver foil)
SCR : Secret Rate (sparkling holographic image)
SR : Super Rare (images on foil background)
UR : Ultra Rare (card name in gold foil, image on foil background)
UTR : Ultimate Rare (embossed holographic image with foil lettering)
Regardless, it is a book that probably should be in your collection.
Prima has decreased all non-buyers' lp to 0!.......2003-10-14
The greatest guide you might ever see. Explains: rules, attack and defense, life points (lp), card lists, and more! Rule the duel with this and the following items: Deluxe Starter Set (joey or pegasus), Duel Disc Launcher, Yugi Starter deck, Magicians Force Boster Packs, Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Catalog: Prima's Official Strategy Guide, and maybee a duelist calculator. Its right here folks! The book almost as good s the Thousand Eyes Bible!
strategy guide.......2003-03-09
I think this is a great type of book for beginners at dueling.I also think it is good because it can help duelists who aren`t that good at it, they want to learn new strategies,or to beat that opponent that just keeps beating you that you can`t win against.

BEST GAME I EVER PLAYED.......2007-08-20
My parents turned me on to authors when I was a kid and, now 56, I play it with them every time I go home. We're on our 10th set of the game but still have the original set saved at home. I leave to see them on Wednesday and they are beginning to warm up the cards as we speak. Buy the game for your family. A fine, fine, way for the whole family to spend its time. Note: there are also sets of SciFi Authors, modern authors, scientists, etc. But, the original game remains the best.
AUTHORS CARD GAME.......2004-05-06
Our parents bought this card game for us when we were youngsters. I am now 53 years old and a grandmother. I am so glad that we were "poor" back then and had to stay home and play this game and read books. This game is a great learning tool, it is played basically like "fish", but you start memorizing the classics and their author. Everyone should buy and play this game with their children.
Authors Card Game.......2002-05-30
Authors was my favorite card game as a child (and still is)and I was thrilled to find my kids (now 13 and 11, but we've been playing it for years) love it as much as I did. It plays like Go Fish but way more challenging because you don't just ask for William Shakespeare but Hamlet by William Shakespeare and if they have Julius Caesar instead, well watch out for your Romeo and Juliet! My kids coined "GO READ" as the response to a wrong guess. This game familiarized me with the names and works of many great authors and I went on to read most of these titles out of curiosity. A family favorite I'm here to replace my original extremely dog-eared deck today.
Authors That Shaped My Life.......2001-07-24
The "Authors" card game of my youth helped me through many a sticky situation. I have been brilliant at cocktail parties when I could recall that Longfellow wrote the "Song of Hiawatha". I have breezed through crossword puzzles with my arcane knowledge of Nathaniel Hawthorne. I am familiar with more Louisa May Alcott titles than just "Little Women". And now I am introducing my children to the classics. We just flew home to Florida from Boston, and my children (ages 9 and 10) and husband (who was an English major in college and was thrilled to have his memory jogged) played the "Authors" game while I was able to read the latest Elizabeth George. The three of them were engaged in lively (and quiet) play for more than a hour! The sign of a truly groovy game. The flight attendant took note of the game for her 10 year old son. This is a wonderful game which introduces the names and titles of books which everyone should read, and now, maybe another generation will.
Drawbacks: the art is too small to be appreciated; not enough graphic impact. The type for both the authors's names and the book titles is also much too small. I might be a baby boomer who has just started wearing reading glasses, but even my 9 year old had trouble with the unfamiliar names in the bitsy type.

this lowly human bridge player has been educated :-).......2006-01-15
There are certain categories of bridge books, to which most of the genre belong; bidding, declarer play, and defense being the most obvious, of course. Bridge as entertainment is a category that is rarely attempted, and the best such books combine this entertainment with interesting deals or lessons. The exploits of Chthonic are probably more in the "interesting deal" category, but well worth the read. Of course, Bridge World subscribers will be familiar with a number of the stories, but having all of those together, along with some new ones, is a nice bonus for the reader. If you're looking for a lesson tome, this is not for you. If you know the game, enjoy this "biography" of the world's best bridge playing computer...

Book Description
In this updated student edition, Paul Wilmott updates and extends his earlier classic, Derivatives: The Theory and Practice of Financial Engineering. Included on CD are numerous Bloomberg screen dumps to illustrate, in real terms, the points raised in the book, along with essential Visual basic code, spreadsheet explanations of the models, and the reproduction of term sheets and option classification tables. The author presents all the current financial theories in a manner designed to make them easy to understand and implement.
Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.

An accessable introduction to a vast field of inquiry.......2007-02-06
An "Introduction" to anything is going to alienate half the readers. Why? Well, of necessity it is going to compress large topics, simply summarize complex topics, and leave whole swaths of material untouched. Most complaint reviews here fall roughly in to one or more of those buckets.
Let' face some facts: finance is a huge field of inquiry; mathematics is a huge field of inquiry; practical execution is a huge topic in itself (see the offerings of excellent books on Excel (Walkenbach, Benninga) and C++ (Joshi) and VBA (pick one)). An introduction of the intersections of these topics is no small area of inquiry. I stress using AMAZON's "look inside" feature for a table of contents rather than repeat the litany of topics, but major issues like risk, random, returns, and standard methods are all covered in a fine first approximation.
So how well does Paul Wilmott do? The answer is not bad. This is a great first book to use with folks crossing over to quantitative finance from other areas (Theology in my case), or for folks who will work and talk with quants but not be one themselves. It will probably appear frustratingly simple to math or engineering majors, but this is an *introduction* and believe me, the heavy lifting comes latter.
As a teaching text, the lack of exercises is a frustrating, but the CDROM has lots of fun spreadsheets with simple built in macros that make practical lecturing a breeze.
Wilmott's style is light, and he does make some logical leaps that can look sloppy but are transparently obvious to folks like him (trained in math), but it is often difficult to know what others don't know and explain without over explaining. Any author has to pick where to compress explanations and no one is going to be completely pleased with all of where Wilmott squeezes. Still, with a minimum bit of extra effort (you are sitting at a computer reading this, and Google Scholar is about two clicks away) anything that isn't clear can be found in an expanded technical address at Wolfram or other helpful sites.
This book is also a great filter. My students who complain it is too easy I move quickly along. Those who still don't get it I steer towards careers in financial sales, those that are lulled into a false sense of power I hand them Shreve to invoke humble silence.
In short, this is an admirable work for its purpose: an *introduction* to a vast, complex, and growing field. The perfect book to discover the field while drinking a beer. Just don't let the beer talk you into thinking you've mastered the subject with this book alone, and you'll be fine.
Good Informal Intro to Financial Math.......2006-08-02
Doesn't require post-graduate college courses (if you've ever done calculus and simple statistics, you're in, but you can get by with less). Definitely keeps it light and fun while pouring lots of info into your brainpan.
One caution, which Paul Wilmott points out: the "Stochastic Calculus" is different in some significant ways from the usual "Calculus" you take--Ito's Lemma looks downright wrong to the "Calculus" crowd!
May depend on your background.......2006-02-10
Not interesting, dry and lacks math details. Lacks economic intuition. For me, Hull's book even does a better job explaining Ito's calculus. But Math/Physics guys may like it.
Teaching-like stuff.......2005-08-10
I recently adopted Paul Wilmott textbook for a course on financial engineering I regularly give. I have always thought that stochastic calculus and derivatives are subjects very difficult to teach in a friendly manner. Wilmott textbook is very helpful in that regard.
Introduction to Quantitative Finance.......2003-06-18
A first rate book to accompany the likes of Hull. Wilmott has produced a comprehensive piece of work which address' the subject matter in a less formal approach with accompanying thoughts on the practical relevance of the theory. The inclusion of Bloomberg screenshots and workable examples in the form of a CD rom has resulted in a book more relevant to the real world. For those who can't get enough there is even a discount included to upgrade to the double volume set entitled 'Quantitative Finance'. Well worth the read.
