Book Description
Dance on Screen is a comprehensive introduction to the rich diversity of screen dance genres. It provides a contextual overview of dance in the screen media and analyses a selection of case studies from the popular dance imagery of music, video and Hollywood, through to experimental art dance. The focus then turns to video dance, dance originally choreographed for the camera. Video dance can be seen as a hybrid in which the theoretical and aesthetic boundaries of dance and television are traversed and disrupted.
Book Description
Acclaimed visionary and intellectual bell hooks began her exploration of the meaning of love in American culture with the bestselling All About Love: New Visions. Here she continues her love song to the nation in the groundbreaking and soul-stirring Salvation: Black People and Love.
Whether talking about the legacy of slavery, relationships and marriage in Black life, the prose and poetry of our most revered artists and leaders, the liberation movements of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, or hip-hop and gangsta rap culture, hooks lets us know what love's got to do with it.
Salvation is work that helps us heal -- and shows us how to create beloved American communities.

A Revelation of change and hope................2007-03-23
An excellent book that every black person should read at least twice a year or more.
This book made me realise my own precious sense of self as a black woman.
The awfulness of how negative and damaging a childhood black people can have.
It can ruin self-esteem making a lot of us feel angry, critical negative
and constantly putting ourselves down or dissing other black people all the time.
I can relate to all the many years of damage that black fathers especially can do.
They descend on the home like a great black cloud or an ogre with their controlling ways, negativity, and various forms of abuse. A black child can feel such and despair struggling to appeal to often disinterested parents who are usually at loggerheads themselves. Where your best just isn't good enough and often our own black relatives are our worst enemies. Constantly finding fault instead of a balance of praise and constructive criticism.
It made me especially upset to read about the guy in prison who suddenly found compassion for his other inmates.
but is trapped on death row.
But there is great hope. We have to look in the mirror and constantly remind ourselves of our own magnificence and
Firmly keep our goals in sight and achieve them as quickly as possible at times keeping them to ourselves until they materialise.
Relate to friends and family who accentuate the positive in you and steer clear from those who don't.
Be firm and take no nonsense from relatives who always seek to be critical and damaging in their influence and
often expecting you to explain yourself. WHAT FOR????
Flee from relationships where the other person tries to press your buttons all the time. This is neither respect or real love!!
As black people we should read more and be much more pro-active in what we wish to achieve and want our lives to reflect.
God Willing.
Where's the Salvation?.......2006-07-07
I bought Salvation hoping Ms. hooks would give definitive ways to address the problems we are having in the Black community. It was informative and somewhat repetitive. Her feminist view came through and in part I disagree with some of her feminist views. In our search for equality, we as women, black women are still left out. Just as the civil rights movement let doors open we closed doors on our own selves when it was unnecessary.
Like any movement, there is a fallout and backlash. Ms. hooks addressed some valid points, such as Love being the answer to our problems in the Black community. However, she gave no real steps, nothing concrete that can be taken into the community and used. We have talked and talked out our problems and even addressed some solutions. Now we need definitive steps and even examples to lead us out of the sex wars between our people.
Another brilliant work.......2004-12-21
In this second volume of the love trilogy, hooks has absolutely touched upon all of the issues that eat away at black love in our modern, successful nation. I remain amazed at bell's marriage to truth-telling in the name of improving our collective lot. As a New Yorker, however, I can't help but wonder why there is such an enormous focus on the imagined 'black community' and a presentation time and again of a world that is only populated by blacks and whites. And I was particularly saddened by the lack of discussion of non-African American blacks, a growing number of the black people in this country. I don't believe that any of bell's insights or strategies presented in this work are necessarily peculiar to black people--they are all brilliant and could apply to all peoples. And brava for devoting an entire chapter to discussing the acceptance of gayness in black life!
love is what we really need.......2004-03-15
This is one of the most thought-provoking books I have read in a while. Though I purchased this book a few years ago, I only recently picked it up to read. And what a read it was....
bell hooks brilliantly explores and exposes many of the fundamental causes at the root of our society's, particularly the black community's, moral decay and self-deformation. Though written for and to African-Americans, hooks does not exclude non-African-Americans from the "call" to embrace and build a love ethic. She has certainly done her research and her book has encouraged me to do more of my own. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and particularly enjoyed the way she ended with a chapter entitled "love justice". I believe love is the most transformative power we have and in this book bell hooks tells us how and why.
hooks calls it as it is..........2003-12-02
Since I "discovered" bell hooks in college (sound familar?) I continually find myself enaged and impressed with her writing style, view poing, un-embellished intellectual discourse, and use of common language to put voice to some difficult and sensitive topics. hooks is a careful observer, who manages to avoid pointing fingers and "taking sides," instead focusing on the way systems -- not individuals -- create situations by which we are all trapped in roles. Salvation is no different. I found it a thorough and thought provoking exploration of the notiton of love in a historically fractured community. As a black woman, it would have been easy to fall into who's *fault* it is that love is an endangered species in black culture. I've read the blame of black men, other black women, white men, mammas, stereotypes ect...but what hooks does differently, and with the gentle grace of an explorer trying to understand without categorically defineing a large topic, is simply examine.
she offers up theory, evidence and most of all a solution and a call to action for us ALL to affect the way love exists in black community. What Salvation leaves is an uplifiting message that while we come from the fractures and fissures left by forced relocation, slavery and dehumanization, love is not an impossibility or a fairytale, but a real necessity in our lives. I also appreciated how hooks addressed not just issues of romantic love but parental affection and the need of a "love ethic" within the black community that will be our salvation.
hooks has done it again, and with every book she lays the map of the black experience from the eyes of a scholar, a woman and a black person. She does it so clearly, and honestly, without guile or resentment, that even non-black scholars can appreciate her viewpoint without feeling alienated -- my roomate and I talked about this book for days after I (initially hesitating for fear she wouldn't 'get it') shared it with her. Its nice to be wrong about some things :)

Excellent Book for people that enjoy puzzles........2001-06-18
Anyone that likes a challenge or enjoys puzzles will love this book. It's a lot of fun. I had the good fortune to be one of the puzzle testers for the book, and I thoroughly enjoyed doing it.

GENERAL FEATURES: Quick Solve Brain Teasers by Sterling Publishing Co. is designed for hours of thinking fun! Don't think too hard or you'll never solve these logic puzzles and riddles. The answers to all 187 are easy once you catch the tricky wording. How can you tie a knot in a napkin by holding one end in each hand without letting go of it? Impossible, you say (or your friends will say, if you bet them). But: Cross your arms and hold a tip of the napkin in each hand. When you uncross your arms, the knot will be formed! Now try this riddle: I climbed up a cherry tree, where I found cherries. I did not pick cherries, nor did I leave cherries. How can you explain this? Answer: I climbed up a cherry tree with two cherries in my hand. I picked only one. I left the other one on the tree. I did not "pick cherries," because I "picked a cherry." Take this dare: My bird can fly faster than any supersonic plane. Here's how: If you put my bird inside any plane and make it fly in the same direction as the plane, it will go faster than the plane. I personally enjoy puzzles of the visual sort. Naturally, I enjoyed the puzzles in this book. I recommend it to anyone looking for visuospatial puzzles.
Good except for the error on the back cover.......2000-09-12
If you like puzzles you solve using only your raw brains--as I do--you'll like this book. It covers just about all the types of visual pattern puzzles that there are in two dimensions--odd man out, next in the series, what's missing, and find the identical figures. There are a couple puzzles that are not truly visual brainteasers as they demand knowledge of gears or levers; there is an overabundance of puzzles that "turn" on rotational differences between figures; and there is one out and out error right on the back cover of the book (In the bottom puzzle on the back cover, all the figures are the same, so there is no "odd one out." Compare to puzzle #52 in the book.)--OUCH!. But even with these minor problems, this is a fun beginner's book of puzzles of this kind.

Book Description
Don't try too hard. That's the secret. The solutions to these tantalizing teasers take common sense, not great knowledge of deep subjects. So relax, have fun, and wait for the answers to bob to the surface. Along the way you'll meet a strange collection of humanity: the harem of the Great Tamerlane; Englishmen stranded on a desert island; the twins Peter and Paul, one of whom always tells the truth and one who always lies (you figure out who's lying when one of them answers one question with one word). Solve a murder on a train as four fellow passengers speak only one sentence each. Try this short teaser: The month begins on a Friday and ends on a Friday, too. What month is it? Win bets by shifting coins from one design to another with the fewest moves. Guess your beautiful math teacher's zodiac sign. Take on the fiendishly frustrating Hidden Words and Secret Numbers, and play dominos with no dots. Hints and clues are available along the way, and so are the answers if you try too hard and simply have to have them. 96 pages, 60 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.

Puzzle these out! Math and logic become more fun than ever when they're turned into brainteasing games. Some of these puzzles use cards or marbles; others have diagrams, grids, and lively illustrations; still more present their questions as a story or riddle. Here are just two examples: Look at this sentence: Dale is wrong. Using all these letters, can you spell a single word? Or try Non-aligned Pawns: How must the 8 white and 8 black pawns in a chess set be placed on a board so that no three pawns end up in the same horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line? They'll really test your smarts!

Mathematics is for all.......2001-06-23
Today I was able to prove once again that mathematics is not just for a few. Challenging Brainteasers taught me how mathematics are not only fun but accesible to all. Besides enjoyig solving many of these brainteasers it provided me with many fine tools to work with my own children and students problems that I previously thought were imposible. A big clap for Recamán.
Wonderful for the classroom.......2001-02-01
I have found this fine collection of puzzles a wonderful source to stimulate my mathematics students. There are problems and puzzles of all levels of difficulty, and on a wide range of topics. Some are classics in a revised form but lots are new to me. All are great fun.
leaf through before you buy.......2001-01-03
Many curent puzzle books feature puzzles that are just old chestnuts dressed up in more modern language or settings, and this book, I'm afraid, is one of those.
Well, maybe I'm being a bit too critical. It's an OK collection if you're new to puzzles. But if you're a seasoned puzzle person, you really should leaf through it and judge by yourself whether it's good enough to fork down your hard earned dollars.
Oh, and the Mensa stamp of intellectual arrogance on the cover? Believe me, as a collector of puzzle books, it's no guarantee that the puzzles inside are that much more original than average fare - in fact, I find it downright pretentious.
Recamán Santos is a real brain teaser.......2000-05-11
I've been a student and a disciple of Professor Recamán for several years. Needless to say that his work, like all his life accomplishments are an example to be followed. Bright, witty, irreverent, with a passion for life and an outstanding sense of humour, he is definitely a magister teaser.

Give this quickie from "Toy Store Words" a try: you have to fill in the blank with a word associated with a toy store that makes sense. Measure yourself against those with the highest IQs.......2003-10-20
This book is an official American Mensa puzzle book. Mensa is a national organization where a high IQ, in the top two percent, is necessary to become a member. As the title implies, the goal is to prove that you too belong in Mensa by solving the puzzles in ninety seconds or less. All of the puzzles are word puzzles, in some cases you must identify words where some letters are missing, others are word chains formed by changing one letter at a time. My favorites are those where a word is to be found that can be split into parts with a different meaning.
One set of such problems involves the leading letter a, words such as "a bout" and "about." Another set of problems uses words such as "mystery", which can be split into "Mister E." At the end of many of the problems the percentage of Mensa members who solved the problem in ninety seconds or less is given, which makes it one of the most interesting IQ tests ever published. Solutions to all problems are included at the end of the book.
I found some of the problem sets to be much easier than others, which is consistent with the percentages listed for the Mensa members. At times, the Mensa percentage is seventy percent or higher, but in some cases it drops as low as thirty percent. If you are looking for a mental challenge where you can compare yourself to those ranked at the top of the intellectual measuring stick, then this book is for you.

Efficient on the topic but disgusting.......2007-08-10
How can managers dream of subordinates that are competent, reliable, hard-working and mature and at the same time more naïve than toddlers?!?? This book is the modern equivalent of Columbus soldiers trading gold for mirrors and tin bracelets with the indigenous.
Imagine you're a manager whose happiest dream is having your subordinates providing valuable and creative (or at least hard-worked) contribution without having to pay more than a ridicule extra, say $20 (or less, as the title goes). Well - I'd call you a scrooge. But if besides beeing a scrooge, you need a book on how to be so, then this book should be called "Avarice for dummies".
On this topic, which is, pretending to reward subordinates with the lamest surrogate bonuses imaginable, the author does a creative job indeed.
This very creativity abunds on the topic of negative rewards as well, in the chapter 13 which is the crème de la crème of the counterproductive ideas, reaching a climax with the "plastic toilet seat framing a description of why the award was given". The proper retort to such offense would most likely be a resignation written on an used toilet paper.
Offering a tool to evade the reality doesn't do any good.
Ultimately, the manager was supposed to collaborate with subordinates, which means listening (not only hearing), communicating (not just dictating), deciding , evaluating and only then, rewarding or punishing. In THIS order. Well, I 'd put my neck on the line for if a manager followed these steps properly, he wouldn't need a book in order to know how to offer proper compensation to employees. Particularly not this one.
Great addition to a Manager's Library.......2006-06-20
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (6/06)
Kevin Aguanno has created a really good resource book listing 101 different rewards that managers can use to enhance morale and productivity in the workplace, each at extremely little direct cost to the organization. Managers often look for ways to recognize good employees for good performance, but have little to nothing in the morale budget to accommodate larger numbers of people over time. This book guides the reader to a one-stop shop of ideas and suggestions for recognizing others. In addition, Mr. Aguanno gives his readers four factors of when to reward and four tips for choosing the right reward for the right time and person.
As a retired Chief of Police who often recognized his employees and staff, I struggled with identifying what to present to whom when the time was right. With Mr. Aguanno's book, my issue would have been considerably simplified. The book is more than just a list of ways to reward, it is a discussion of when and how to reward, with a strong emphasis (rightly so) on positive rewards, but also a discussion of the infrequent negative reward. All managers and those who aspire to lead should have this book. It is really a great addition to the manager's library.
Really nice book.........2006-01-17
This book is not only a list of the ways you can reward people, but it also gives you a bit of theory behind it, it also tells you what are the risks associated with rewarding and the unforseen effects that uneffective rewarding can have on your team.
I think this book is great reading material, besides giving you extra ideas to reward your team (like the rubber chicken), it can be used as a stepping stone to find more creative ways to improve your team's morale.
Fun, practical ideas........2005-02-19
I liked this book a lot better than the Bob Nelson book which was not very practical. This one is full of inexpensive reward ideas that are well-suited to my small (under 100 employees) company. I was impressed with the first half of the book that explains how to get the most out of my reward budget by telling me (step by step) how to ensure that the rewards I select will be valued by the recipient, reinforce the correct behaviors, and have spin-off benefits by motivating other employees. I would recommend you buy this in a minute.
No Excuse!.......2004-04-13
Management, team leaders and the like, have no excuse any longer when it comes to rewarding their team members! Kevin Aguanno, has provided an easy reference for even the most busy managers. This book is a wonderful resource for managers that need good ideas quickly. It is so easy to forget to reward one's staff when times get crazy. The ideas in 101 ways will help every team leader save time and money. Most importantly, it will enable management to show its appreciation in so many ways that are truly meaningful to staff.
