3 out of 5 stars Interesting Few Flaws though.......2004-07-10

It's got a lot of good info and tons of pictures, but some stars are missing and the info is a bit inaccurate (ie. They say Peter Boyle died in 1990, how can he when he's playing Frank on Everybody Loves Raymond!) It helps you figure out the names of those rarly seen stars from your favorite low-budget films, but hardy gives much info on people you want to know about, no Marty Feldman, Elvis Presley, Dudley Moore, Rick Moranis, Paul Rebuans, or anyone the same, but take it as it is.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite film critics.......2001-10-01

Though I know some people dislike him as much as others love him, I have to say that, for myself personally, no film historian better captures the love and exhiliration that can be felt from watching a truly wonderful movie. In his writings, Danny Peary has always proven himself to be not only a student of films but also a fan. And yes, there is a huge difference! Peary came to prominence with his three Cult Film books. Cult Film Stars provides a great companion for those books and is a lot of fun on its own as well. Cult Film Stars is a thick compilation of entries, listing names from the expected (Pam Grier, Sonny Chiba, Klaus Kinski) to the unexpected (John Wayne, long though of so mainstream but Peary wonderfully shows how Wayne is almost as important as cult star as say Ed Wood's infamous friend Dudley Manlove). Along with listing each star's important films, Peary crams each entry full of interesting and often humorous facts and observations. This books works as a great introduction to films that many might otherwise have not heard of. I was still in high school when it first came out and just starting to discover how much I truly loved film. It was from this book that I first found out about such really cool (sorry if I sounded juvenile there but there's no better way to put it really) people like Pam Grier, Terrence Hill, and Toshiro Mifune. His entries on Kay Lenz, Meg Foster, and Karen Allen helped me to discover such unsung entertainments as Breezy, Ticket to Heaven, and The Wanderers respectively. A really great book for any film fanatic. However, keep in mind, the book was also published a decade ago. Some of the information will be dated but none the less interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Not just movie stars, but CULT movie stars!.......2000-03-28

This book is basically a reference book of movie stars and directors who have made films that have spawned cult followings (some of the entries include Tim Curry, Divine, John Waters, Steve Reeves, Mamie Van Doren, Ed Wood, and Bela Lugosi). It includes a short biographical paragraph with little-known facts and has several illustrations - I found the book to be most useful because it also included a brief film history of the performer in his or her best roles. I would recommend buying the book if you are like me and get a kick out of b-movies and b-movie stars. It's really too bad it's out of print.

Book Description

Cecil B. DeMille, David Selznick, Louella Parsons, Joan Crawford--these legendary men and women built an empire called Hollywood. In Movie Crazy, meet another group of powerful players who shaped the film industry--the fans. MGM, for example, struggled to find a screen name for an actress named Lucille LeSeur. A fan--one of thousands who responded to a contest sponsored by the studio--called her Joan Crawford. Using fan club journals, fan letters, and studio production records, Samantha Barbas reveals how the passion, enthusiasm, and sometimes possessive advocacy of fans transformed early cinema, the modern mass media, and American popular culture. Barbas sheds new light on the development of the cult of celebrity in America, and demonstrates that while fans were avid consumers of the film industry, they did not mindlessly accept the images presented to them by the studios. Fans reacted to movies and stars with excitement, anger, confusion, joy, or boredom. Far from a united force, fans were often complex, and never predictable.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting History.......2002-10-17

I really liked this book. I expected it would take me a month to read, a little here and a little there, but I found it surprisingly exciting and finished it in just one week. I am not a film historian but I am a silent film buff and was especially impressed by the sections on Florence Lawrence, Rudolph Valentino, etc.

The overall thesis is quite persuasive - that it was movie fans, as much as studios, executives, etc. who really determined the quality and character of American movies, at least through the 1950s. Even when studios misled fans (as in their portraying Clark Gable as a rough-and-tough guy in real life), they were doing so because they had already determined what fans wanted in the first place. This book is very well written and free from the sort of annoying jargon that is only of interest to specialists. There is a LOT of information here and a useful index as well. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good.......2002-05-02

As a primer on the cult of celebrity and the history of film fandom, this is a nice little book. For those who have read dozens of film books, there's not a lot new offered here but it's still a good read. Barbas does a very good job of analyzing the habits of fans and the studios' view of fans. I would have liked to see a further discussion of the fury of Internet-era fandom (Ain't It Cool, etc.) but that's perhaps for another book.

    Book Description

Anthropology has a long history of the "other," yet we can look right here at home for the strangeness we seek. We often neglect to ask the questions that reveal our own culture's underlying value and beliefs. In this volume, we bring the American culture into focus. For readers to understand the full impact of ethnography, to experience cultural relativity and to gain a foundation to build informed comparisons, readers need a firm grasp of their own culture--and need to use this volume. The Third Edition consists of 19 essays written by anthropologists and other scholars using an ethnographic perspective. The essays enable readers to understand themselves better by focusing on their own culture and seeing it from a new perspective. This collection gives anthropology a comparative perspective that provides a reflective lens, a mirror, for understanding ourselves and the world in which we live.

Surrealism is far more than some dead art movement: it is also a collection of tools for perceiving and representing the world in ways that transcend normative perspectives. This delightful little book is packed with word and image games that surrealists developed to create their written and graphical art. If you have any spark of creativity, you are strongly encouraged to get this book to help loosen the holds of quotidian existence on your craft. And it makes a great book of activities for parties that you want to rise above petite bourgeois posturing. Highly Recommended.

    Book Description

This delightful collection allows everyone to enjoy firsthand the provocative methods used by the artists and poets of the Surrealist school to break through conventional thought and behavior to a deeper truth. Invented and played by such artists as André Breton, Rene Magritte, and Max Ernst, these gems still produce results ranging from the hilarious to the mysterious and profound.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2006-08-19

I expected something less sloppily put together on surrealist games, a fascinating and rich topic. This little book contains a few classic surrealist little gems, but it is a rather unconvicing as a whole, too much of a hodge-podge that lacks structure, design and sparks. Or maybe it is surrealist games that have become a bit tiresome. Or maybe playing is more fun than reading about other people's games.

2 out of 5 stars Uh, yea, right, well I guess it was okay........2002-03-22

We learned half of these games in high school creative writing class.

I read the whole thing while going to the bathroom one evening. It's really short. Ah, so I skimmed some parts. ;)

It is very interesting to see some of the examples. You can read Breton's example of free writing (or whatever they called it; the book is not near me at the moment), and other interesting ideas from familiar surrealists.

If you are having "writer's block" then this book might have some interesting ways of breaking it. It's probably a good reference for writers, artists, etc.

Where the hell is Dali in here though? Oh yeah Breton didn't like him. :\

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Starting Point.......2000-03-27

Whether your goal is surrealist literature, surrealist art, or just entertainment, this book is a great buy. Lots of games (some literary, some artistic), information about the surrealist movement itself and some of the key players, and a good bibliography for future reading.

4 out of 5 stars neat lil' book........1999-12-15

Being an admirer and wanna-be creator of DaDa, I found this book amusing. The games were interesting and bizarre, there were lots of pictures, and a lot of artists were included. They are fun to read about and see the examples even if you have no intention of really trying them. "The Exquisite Corpse" and "Directions for Use" were 2 of the better ones, and they have examples by the original surrealists. The only problem I had with the book was that some of the directions were a little vague. For instance, the picture on page 71 is a double image, but it could have given some clue about how to actually find it - it became frustrating. The games are so unusual compared to what we normally think of as games that more detailed directions are essential. For instance, there are not obvious "winners" and "losers" in them, they are played for the sake of toying with reality and using imagination to create the unexpected. It's a fun book that's small enough to take with you all the time.

This book is my idea of fun! It's full of games for people who love to be creative, collaborative, extemporaneous! I'd like to know you if you are into these games. Judy (vegwriter@aol.com

    Book Description

The bizarre and often humorous creations of René Magritte, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, and other surrealists are showcased in this activity guide for young artists. Foremost among the surrealists, Salvador Dalí was a painter, filmmaker, designer, performance artist, and eccentric self-promoter. His famous icons, including the melting watches, double images, and everyday objects set in odd contexts, helped to define the way people view reality and encourage children to view the world in new ways. Dalí's controversial life is explored while children trace the roots of some familiar modern images. These wild and wonderful activities include making Man Ray-inspired solar prints, filming a dreamscape video, writing surrealist poetry, making collages, and assembling art with found objects.

This is not only an informative book, there are many fun activities that will bring out the artist in anyone willing to try them. Love Dali and I used this book in a art class presentation ( I got it out of our local library) enjoyed the book so much and tried several of the activities. Had to own the book.

5 out of 5 stars The art history is pretty good but the activities are great.......2004-02-19

I have read several of these Chicago Review Press volumes that combine art or history with 21 activities geared for kids ages 10 and up, and Michael Elsohn Ross' "Salvador Dali and the Surrealists: Their Lives and Ideas with 21 Activities" is the best of the bunch I have seen to date. The art history section is excellent but this time around the activities are even better. Art teachers looking for ways of introducing their young students to art in general and the surrealists in particular will find these activities to be extremely useful. Of course, in this age of schools dealing with deep budget cuts this book might be even more useful for teachers who do not have training in art or who are simply doing an art unit in their class.

Ross does a wonderful job of putting the Surrealists in historical context. Although he starts by looking at Dali's early life and first impressionist works, Ross tells young readers how World War I and the birth of the Dada movement, started to move art in a new direction. Throughout the book Ross provides looks at not only important artists like Pablo Picasso, Rene Magritte, and Frida Kaholo, but also Sigmund Freud, Francisco Franco, and Harpo Marx. When you get to the Marx Brothers and the idea of absurd comedy that they represented in their films such as "A Night at the Opera," then you can rest assured that Ross is providing not only breadth but also depth to his treatment of Surrealism. Dali is clearly the paradigmatic surrealist artist, which may well just be another way of saying the most popular, but that distinction will not matter to young students who will be fascinated by the famous melted watches in "The Persistence of Memory" (1931) and the gaping square hole in the back of the figure in "The Weaning of Furniture-Nutrition" (1934). I was surprised that they did not show the infamous harp, covered with silverware, that Dali made for Harpo Marx.

Consequently, the text of the book, where Ross looks at how surrealism drew on the revolutionary theories of Sigmund Freud to bring the creativity of the subconscious to art and details the fanciful creations of Magritte, Miro, Dali and other artists, stands on its own as providing a superb introduction to Dali and the surrealists. However, the activities Ross came up with are even better. Starting with such simple ideas a finding Pictures Everywhere, Ross moves on to tricks for altering the way you see the world (Crystal Eyes), and the inventiveness of Free Association and Inkblots. A series of activities are based on the work of specific artists, such as the Splotch Art of Joan Miro, the Solar Prints of Man Ray, the Surreal Objects of Marcel Duchamp, the Art in a Box of Max Ernst, and Dali's technique of Frottage. Of course, when they get to the concept of Hair Art, students might always recognize that from what some of their classmates have already been doing. Ross provides some actual examples of student projects based on these exercise as well as works by great artists that inspired the ideas. Even younger children will enjoy the "Exquisite Corpse" Drawing activity.

Although I supposed I could always glue a lobster to a rotary telephone on my own, perhaps the biggest compliment I can pay to this book is that I wish I had young students that I could get to try some of these out. My youngest daughter should be careful the next time she comes over because I do not think it is likely that I will come up with a way of getting my online Pop Culture class to do this, much as I would like to. This book is so inspiring that I can see teachers who only deal with art tangentially in their class to find a way to work some of this information and several of these exercises into their classes. There are also plenty of other great Surrealist artists for these students to learn more about as well as well as imaginatively inspirational paintings like Magritte's "Time Transfixed" (1938).

      Book Description

The Surrealist movement that arose in Europe in the early 1900s used playful procedures and systematic stratagems to create provocative works and challenge the conventions of art, literature, and society. They conducted their experiments through art and polemic, manifesto and demonstration, love and politics. But it was above all through game-playing that they sought to subvert academic modes of inquiry and undermine the complacent certainties of the bourgeoisie. Surrealist games is a delightful compendium that allows the reader to enjoy firsthand the methodologies of the Surreal, with their amazing swings between the verbal and the visual, the beautiful and the grotesque. It is also a box of games to play for fun: poetic, imaginative, revelatory, full of possibilities for unlocking the door to the unconscious and releasing the poetry of collective creativity. The boxed set contains: A 168-page sewn, illustrated hardcover book packed with outrageous language games, alternative card games, "Dream Lotto," and automatic techniques for making poems, stories, collages, photomontages, and candle-smoke drawings. The illustrations are by such artists as Max Ernst, Hans Arp, and Tristan Tzara A fold-out game board for the "Goose Game," designed by André Breton, Yves Tanguy, and others A Little Surrealist Dictionary

              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting story but nothing new here.......2006-01-05

I like stories of people who build businesses and while I am unfamiliar with this company I took a chance on the story. The storyline is interesting how they got the company turned around and built it into what it is today. The timeless principles are nothing you havent read but hey these ladies are successful and it is a nice read but no big lessons just a good success stroy.
