Book Description

Not unlike the elusive figure played by Greta Garbo, the real Queen Christina stood among the most flamboyant and controversial figures of the seventeenth century. All of Sweden could not contain her ambition or quench her thirst for adventure. Freed from her crown, she cut a breathtaking path across Europe -- spending madly, seeking out a more majestic throne, and stirring up trouble wherever she went. With a dazzling narrative voice and unerring sense of the period, Veronica Buckley goes beyond historical myth to breathe life into an extraordinary woman who set the world on fire and became an icon of her age -- a time of enormous change when Europe stood at the crossroads of religion and science, antiquity and modernity, war and peace.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Disappointingly Skewed.......2005-10-08

While Buckley has admirably and extensively researched and detailed her portrait of Europe in the 1600's, her characterizations of Christina of Sweden are irritatingly judgemental and peevish. If you are looking for a curmudgeonly psuedoanalysis of the extraordinary Queen, you will be happy. If you are looking for an impartial biography or an exciting story, you won't find it here. Buckley cobbles the flow of her own narrative by nitpicking Christina's motivations at every turn. YAWN!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent examination of a life........2005-01-29

Buckley has done a wonderful job with her first book and I am hoping that others will follow. This is a well-researched and well-documented biography of Christina. The queen is placed within her time period and Buckley wisely refrains from enforcing a modern view on the queen's lifestyle and decisions. Instead the author leaves the reader to make up their own mind.

And excellently written work, Buckley gives those of us with little knowledge of seventeenth century Sweden a context from which to view Christina's life. And the discussion of Karl Gustav, Christina's father, the man who made Sweden a powerful military nation, is an important part of understanding Christina's idea of herself.

For a pleasurable and enlightening look at one of the many high born (I would hesitate to call Christina powerful, except in her own mind) women floating around seventeenth century Europe, this is as great place as any to start.

3 out of 5 stars I love a good eccentric!.......2004-12-20

Unfortunately, there was a lot of Swedish history to slog through at first. When I finally got to Christina's misadventures, things picked up. But this was not a really compelling biography--I kept counting how many pages I had left til the end. If you want a biography you can't put down, go read "A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey.

Book Description

Boudica, queen of the Iceni, led a famous revolt against Roman rule in Britain in AD 61, sacking London, Colchester and St. Albans and throwing the province into chaos. Although then defeated by the governor, Suetonius Paulinus, her rebellion sent a shock wave across the empire. Who was this woman who defied Rome? Boudica is an account of what we know about the real woman from classical literature and the archaeological evidence. It also traces her extraordinary posthumous career as the earliest famous woman in British history. Since the Renaissance she has been seen as harridan, patriot, freedom fighter and feminist, written about in plays and novels, painted and sculpted, and recruited to many causes.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Woman of Victory.......2007-04-07

This book could not be given enough stars. It takes a fascinating episode in history, the revolt of the Queen of the Iceni of Britain in AD 60-61, and looks at it from historical, archaeological, literal, and mythical points of view. It shows how Boudica has went from simply the best-remembered of many contemporary British female warlords to variously being portrayed as a sadistic villian, a feminist hero, and a champion of British nationalism and politics. Overall, the book examines the real Boudica's role in history and her subsequent impact on modern Britain in a manner that is both informative and enjoyable to read. Extremely highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Christina, Queen of Sweden.......2006-05-03

I am doing my undergraduate research on this woman, and I found this book to be extremely helpful. I loved reading every word and I couldn't put it down. The more I learned about this fantastic, bizarre woman in history, the more I wanted to know. Extensively researched with all of the major texts (as far as I can tell), its most definately an entertaining and informative book. Kudos to this first-time author!

Product Description

Imagine being a thirteen-year-old girl dealing with your single father, annoying brother and all the baggage of growing up. You start having nightmares about a dark figure who asks you to visit the past and “find her treasure.” Suddenly the dream becomes real: you travel through time, battle ancient pirates, face down demons and search for a hidden hoard of riches. You’re Jessica Ross, heroine of The Pirate Queen - A Timewalker Journey, an action-packed book inspired by the real-life adventures of Grace O'Malley, the Irish Pirate Queen. The story: While traveling in Ireland, seventh-grader Jessica Ross is haunted by strange dreams of a mysterious figure. That otherworldly presence turns out to be Grace O’Malley, a real-life, sixteenth-century pirate queen. After the ghostly queen asks Jess to “find her treasure,” Jess travels through time to relive scenes from the pirate queen’s thrilling life, such as fighting an epic sea battle, planning a secret wedding, and battling the evil Clan Mannix, the arch-enemy of Clan O’Malley. Along the way Jess discovers a secret society of Timewalkers with powers just like her own. One member warns her that she must find Grace’s hidden treasure… or else! That means Jess has just six hours to unearth the treasure, get her mischievous brother out of trouble, and confront the Shadow Cat, a spectral assassin with a deadly interest in Jess’s quest. But is she ready for the adventures ahead?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wild Ride Back In Time.......2005-08-01

I was familiar with the legend of Grace O'Malley, but Christina Bauer puts a fun twist on the story in her "Pirate Queen". It's a fascinating tale of one young woman's personal voyage of self-discovery, with her burgeoning time-traveling power standing in as a metaphor for the struggle everyone faces when we transform from kids into grown-ups. My 14-year old niece loved the book (she has an annoying little brother just like Timewalking heroine Jessica Ross); her mom loved Bauer's emphasis on kids' -- especially girls' -- need to build self-reliance and self-esteem; my 13-year old nephew loved the action... lots of action! That makes "Pirate Queen" a fast, exciting read. "Pirate Queen" is an interesting counterpoint to "Harry Potter" in that Harry seldom faces the consequences of his actions, instead getting a free pass from higher-ups sympathetic to his plight. Nice and neat, but not true-to-life. Jessica Ross travels the difficult road to finding herself mostly alone, and we all get to enjoy the journey with her. It's a trip well worth taking!

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2005-07-30

The first time I sat down to read this book, I only planned to read the first couple of chapters. The next thing I knew it was after midnight and I was one-quarter of the way through. The story is about this girl named Jess. She's an American teenager traveling in Ireland when she starts dreaming about a ghostly pirate queen named Grace O'Malley (who's actually a real-life Irish pirate queen from the 1500's.) Jess says she'll help Grace "find her treasure" and then she starts to travel through time to relive different things from Grace's life, like sea b! attles, secret weddings and castle seiges. I don't want to spoil all the surprises, but the book is a real page-turner, especially when Jess starts to find out about the secret society of Timewalkers. I think my favorite character in the book is Jess's little brother and master prankster Jake. It's worth reading the book just to find out what he'll do next.

5 out of 5 stars More than just an action adventure!.......2005-07-29

A friend recommended this book for my eldest daughter, and I ended up plowing through it myself (Harry Potter fan that I am, I just can't resist this genre). It's tons of fun - not a dull moment - but what I'm most excited about is the historical element. Finally, an "action adventure" for girls - and I don't mean a sexy superhero! The book is based on a REAL 16th century pirate queen named Grace O'Malley who apparently ruled the high seas near Ireland but whose name does not appear in the history books (which are not dominated by powerful female leaders in any event). That said, there is enough fantasy and drama to keep the boys fully engaged, too. A refreshing choice - I highly recommend it.

2 WOMEN, 14 DAYS. THE GOAL? ACHIEVE BOLD FACE STATUS

SIGHTINGS: Spotted last night at a giant bash at Nobu: fashionista cuties Karen Robinovitz and Melissa De La Cruz. Karen was heard saying she’s “still exhausted” from her recent Bungalow 8 birthday party that would have made P. Diddy jealous. Apparently, she was wearing two million dollars’ worth of Harry Winston diamonds (including the 22-carat ring Whoopie Goldberg wore to the Oscars) and was constantly shadowed by a bodyguard named Lou who was straight out of a Scorsese film. Melissa, also fatigued from the fast track, just hosted an intimate dinner party at a swanky Upper East Side restaurant attended by trend-setting journos from New York magazine, The Observer, Allure, “Page Six” as well as the indefatigable Michael Musto–and as part of the gift bag giveaway, the whole crew is being flown to Miami to stay at a five-star resort favored by the likes of Will Smith.

Asked how they managed to go from barely-known freelance writers to A-list celebrities in just fourteen days, they coyly spilled the beans: Marie Claire called with the assignment, and they simply begged, clawed, cried, borrowed, cheated, lied, stole, and bribed their way to fame. Their how-to tips to stardom include “Pick an M&M color to hate, and stick to it.” And they’re writing a book, daaahlings, so whether you live in New York or Nebraska, you too can have the goods to claim your own fame and become legendary.

2 out of 5 stars You have to already have a start........2005-12-02

Although funny, this book does nothing for the "unknown" person trying to be "famous". Ms. DeLaCruz started this project of hers already being known. For the rest of us, I guess we need to become known for something before we can claim our 15 minutes.

2 out of 5 stars Silly and shallow.......2005-08-26

This book is trying to sell itself as more than it is. This is not entertaining and useful hints and tips on what ordinary Americans can do to ckaim some fame. It is simply a description on how two over-the-hill journalists in their 30s used their old sources to get invited to celebrity parties -for two weeks. (going to these parties is basically in the job desciption for journalists anyway.) The book is fun at times, but on the whole it is repetitive and self absorbed. Not worth the buy.

4 out of 5 stars they will make you popular.......2005-06-14

a very entertaining book on how to become famous. well at the very least popular. i cant say that all of their advice will prove useful, but there are some great ideas on how to get things you want and how to present your "product" which is you.

              4 out of 5 stars Keep what's good, don't read the bad........2005-04-11

I read through this book at the bookstore one rainy afternoon. At that point in my life, I was interviewing for an internship position for a movie in Canada, so I couldn't find a better read for my foray into filmmaking.
I quickly skipped the self-agrandizing and self-promotion parts as well as the annoying name-dropping bits and retained the practical information: get great biz cards, never be too available, know how to develop a unique style. This useful information is the one that is shaded in grey in the book. I didn't like the writing at all and thought it was better directed towards a teen audience, as a woman of substance, I could not care less about the life of these 2 women. Nevertheless, the information that is provided is very useful and can be applied to any field.People who make it in any competitive industry are the ones who are great at self-promotion.It's a great little book for people on their way to L.A or N.Y, or anyone interested in P.R.

3 out of 5 stars True Confessions from a co-author.......2005-02-04

My true confession is that I have not read this book; however, I saw Melissa on television talking about it. She stated that one of the things she did was give the book an effusive review right here on Amazon. I appreciated her honesty. It confirmed my suspicions regarding a lot of the book and music reviews here.
An amusing lady. Look to the other reviewers for opinions on the book and be a little wary of five star reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Lean and Mean.......2007-07-16

This book provides the outline of a good aggressive system for Black. Schiller takes us down roads less travelled here with good commentary. The only regret is the lack of variations covered. This is a relatively thin paperback, and anyone who seriously adopts the system will have to develop his/her own variation notes for many uncovered responses generated from over-the-board play.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, exciting chess.......2002-11-05

The value of these gambits is that you will never play boring chess, and you will be forced to be aggressive to try to win. IN that sense, these gambits force you to become a much better player, and force you to learn tactics, because if you can't spot tactics to give you an edge, you will simply be a pawn down! Schiller's books are alive with energy and enthusiasm. FOr these reasons, I love this book, and find myself picking it up quite often. Face it, the Center Counter (and gambit variations) can be a very effective tool as black: he dictates the opening and can be better prepared than white.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Repertoire Book !.......2000-11-18

This book focuses on the Von Henning Schara Gambit against 1. d4 and the Center Counter (Icelandic and Porteguese Gambits) against 1. e4.

In general, both of thses lines offer very interesting counter chances for a player of the black pieces willing to invest a pawn to unbalance things. This is very important if you are attempting to play for a win with black, rather than just holding a draw.

I am not much of an expert (yet) in the Von Henning Schara, but I done extensive studying and playing the Center Counter (Icelandic Gambit and Porteguese) System featured in the book. I have to take exception with some of the other reviewers, I thought that the book actually seemed rather thorough compared to many of the other books I have read on the subject.

What really impressed me was the amount of analysis available on some of the sideline variations leading to the main line. (I have encountered these specific variations quite frequently, both over the board and on the internet).

My feeling on repertoire books is that their job is to get you acquated with a system by explaining the key ideas, and then provide a number of illustrative games to see the ideas in action. This book does an okay job of fulfilling that objective.

Beyond that, if you want to find some highly obscure line it is time to consult a specialized database and find those games yourself. I don't think that a reasonably priced, normal sized book can provide that level of detail.

Overall, this is a pretty decent book. It is probably best suited for players in the rating range of 1300 - 1900 USCF.

                3 out of 5 stars Barely passable.......2000-05-20

While this book is a step up from Schiller's "Gambit Opening for White" it is really quite incomplete and is missing a lot of key lines. The formatting is poor, and there are a lot of typos.

This is too bad, because a good book on the Schara gambit (which forms the core of Schiller's repetriore against 1.d4) would be useful to a lot of players. This, however, probably isn't that book.

There's enough material in here for you to figure out how to play these defenses, but I, for one, expect more for my money.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting introduction..........2000-04-12

This Book brings up some interesting and obscure lines, but the discussion is rather incomplete and not every possibility is adequately planned for.

                Book Description

Event marketing is big business: U.S. corporations invest more than $300 billion a year in every kind of event-from webinars, tradeshows, product launches, and golf hospitality functions, to user groups and customer conferences.

In The Event Marketing Handbook, industry expert Allison Saget shows marketing professionals how to maximize return on investment for the dollars their companies spend on events. She believes that event marketing is a strategic, dynamic discipline linked to a firm’s business objectives and sales goals. The key, according to Saget, is a great BLT-Brand recognition, Lead generation, and Thought leadership.

In this A-to-Z guide, Saget shows professionals how to drive results through integrated marketing activities, such as advertising, direct mail, and public relations. She also answers crucial questions like: ""How do I reach my target audiences?"" ""Why and when should we use celebrities at our events?"" and ""How do I plan a press and analyst program within an event?""

Packed with case studies, planning templates, sample time frames, event programs, and names of associations, The Event Marketing Handbook is designed for every marketer who wants to think strategically, remember the fundamentals, plan carefully, and achieve results. Beginners and seasoned veterans alike should own this book.

                5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Value.......2006-12-04

Finally a book has arrived that creates semblance and understanding to effective event marketing for companies in need. I stumbled upon Allison Saget's Event Marketing Handbook during a recent search online. I was responsible for coordinating our first major event and being a start-up company we could finally honor our founding 500 businesses for their support. The success of this event was imperative. Our congressman arrived and cut the red ribbon. Using all the templates and tools from the Event Marketing Handbook, I was congratulated by the President of the company for my insight and ability to follow through with a task, that was considered unparralled to anything else we have done thus far. I highly recommend this book for any company that wishes to create the best event EVER!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Marketing and Sales.......2006-12-01

This book is comprehensive and full of practical detail. Most importantly it provides a strategic approach for events. You'll reference this book for years.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for corporate marketing...........2006-11-18

This book is the most comprehensive resource on Event Marketing available. It clearly outlines the relationship between marketing and sales and most importantly how to shorten the sales cycle. The information and tools were invaluable. This book must be read by today's marketing professional. My entire marketing team LOVED this book and I continually recommend it to all of my industry associates. Thank you very much Ms. Saget for the insight, information and techniques. Deserves to be 10 stars.

1 out of 5 stars this book is killing me!.......2006-11-16

its the reason why i am considering never ordering books from amazon again!
i hate not being able to flip thru the book before buying it. had i had a chance to do it with this one, i would have NEVER bought it!
it is one word - dumb.
aimed at primarily sales organizations. and it reminds me of, dunno, knife salesmen and multilevel marketing events where everyone goes "yeah!!" like they're about to win a war in one decisive battle and not sell cleaning products!
it is useless for an agency person, and it has very very limited use for corporate marketing people.
i don't know WHO this book is written for.
maybe for people who have never had exposure to anything even remotely resembling marketing.
the writing style is patronizing, and at times irrelevant.
it pisses me off that paid 16 bucks plus 35% s&h on top for this piece of [...].
and what is even more disappointing is that the reviewers before me gave it all those stars.
goes to show how much one can truly trust readers' reviews.
oooh, disappointing is such a weak word..

4 out of 5 stars Practical guide to getting maximum marketing advantage from your events........2006-09-28

Event marketing is more than throwing a great party. Like any marketing endeavor, its ultimate goal is to generate sales. Author Allison Saget keeps her eye on the prize as she teaches you how to plan and execute your next event. She emphasizes that event marketing must be an integral part of your company's total marketing strategy. She covers every aspect of event marketing, including choosing an event, working with sales, crafting a message, generating leads, measuring results and rising above the competition. The book is filled with practical templates and forms she developed during her 20 years in the business. Saget's attention to detail gets a bit tedious; for example, she meticulously describes the best way to pack a suitcase, but that is easy to forgive because so much of the information is valuable. We encourage you to read this thorough handbook before you rent that tent.
