Pioneering cinematographer Charles G. Clarke, ASC, wrote this slim volume in 1964 at the urging of his students at UCLA. Mr. Clarke suffered a heart attack while preparing to shoot Marines, Let's Go in Japan. Upon his retirement, old friend and Fox producer Kenneth Macgowen (In Old Chicago, Lifeboat) who was the head of the theater arts department at UCLA, persuaded Mr. Clarke to join the faculty.

Book Description
In this fascinating excursion through popular culture and marketing history, design critic Thomas Hine decodes the secret language of packaging -- and explains the many subtle ways that boxes, bottles, and cans persuade us to spend our hard-earned money. Tracing the art and science of package design from its emergence late last century to today's most instantly recognizable brand images -- the Campbell's soup can, the Coca-Cola bottle, the Marlboro box, and many others -- Hine has written an essential book for students of popular culture, designers, marketers ... and anyone who goes shopping.
Customer Reviews:
What a fantastic surprise!.......2007-07-23
I was actually interested in the history of the cigar box when Amazon suggested The Total Package to me. I bought the book as an impulse purchase (despite the cheap yellow cover that the book itself criticises) and I have been very happy that I did. I have not been able to put this book down. This book far surpassed my expectations and has been a wealth of historical facts and connections between the technology of packaging and our civilization.
I have read one strong critique of Hine's book in that it does not go very deep into the psychology of packaging and how it shapes the choices that consumers make. I think that is beyond the point here. Hine's work does an outstanding job of making an interesting historical narrative about packaging. Hine sees the world through the eye of the consumer from the epoch of the proto-package, through the world of boxes and tin cans, and on through cellophane and plastics. That perspective in this book has opened the world up to me.
I cannot recommend this book enough!
You buy, therefore you must read this book........2005-04-11
My community college graphic design students read this book for a class, so I've read it six or seven times now. Every year I look forward to it. It is a wonderful way to get my (mostly) American students to think their role in an economy they've rarely questioned. They learn about how products have been adorned and contained over the centuries and they also learn why great cities thrived with the advancements in packaging, why suburbs keep growing and why cars and groceries are an intertwined pair.
There plenty of insights here for the consumer who wonders why there are so many kinds of toothpaste and why there will always be a battle between Coke and Pepsi. You eat a lot of tuna? Did you know it was canned for the first time because a cannery ran out of sardines? Did you know that canning itself was developed for Napoleon's military campaigns? You know yellow makes products look cheap? You do, but you didn't know you did.
For designers it is an indispensible history that will help you locate your place in the world of business and the American economy.Thomas Hine discusses how research dominates design and how brand managers can wipe out your precious work with a single "Natural!" violator.
Packaging Is What We Are.......2005-01-02
I fell in love with Thomas Hine's The Total Package: The Secret History and Hidden Meanings of Boxes, Bottles, Cans, and Other Persuasive Container from page 1 for this book pulls you into a world that on the one hand is so familiar to you, but on the other hand yet also so unknown, namely the world of package - design and the world of stores.
In his book, Mr. Hine writes about the development of things that I had never even given a thought like the invention of the shopping cart and how it should not take up too much space or the design of the grocery store as a maze, but the book also tells so much more like what colors on the packages say about the products and so on. Mr. Hine even argues that "packaging is what we are" for "packaging mirrors its expected customers, and thus it provides an unfamiliar and provocative perspective about who we are and what we want."
Well, I consider this book to be a true eye-opener and I experience just walking down the aisles in a store as a truly unique experience now for I came to realize that there is a whole theory behind everything I see around me or every aspect of the store.
Excellent Book!.......2004-05-21
A wonderfully interesting book about the history of product packaging. Very thorough and engaging -- I had no idea how important the paper bag was! Rich with insights about consumer behavior in marketplaces and the geographic evolution of the American shopping experience. I go it from the library and wound up buying it as a reference book for years to come!
What's up with the icky cover?.......2001-09-30
What can I say? As a book about packaging, it should take a lesson from itself. Sheesh...!

Outstanding resource.......2007-05-23
I work year-round at a camp and retreat center and lead games quite a bit. I found this book to be very helpful, giving just the right amount of insight, motivation, and helpful hints, such as great ideas for attention-getters and how to divide a group without destroying the self-image of half your kids. The authors were playful and write with a down-to-earth spirit. I recommend this book to those in the camp or recreation industry, especially if you are relatively new to it.
Leading Games and Everything.......2001-11-02
Bill and John are personal friends of mine. I've known them since the 70s when John and Burton and I were co-leading the New Games Foundation. Bill has been teaching recreation at San Francisco State and stayed with it despite lack of funding and recognition for-just-about-ever. So anything I have to say about this book is probably suspect.
On the other hand, I REALLY like this book. In my 30 years of exploring new games and deeper fun, I haven't found any book that could actually portray New Games leadership as comprehensively and compassionately.
It is, of course, about more than leading games. It is about leadership itself, and a startlingly revolutionary model for the kind of leadership that truly serves the players.

Download Description
Quantile regression is gradually emerging as a unified statistical methodology for estimating models of conditional quantile functions. By complementing the exclusive focus of classical least squares regression on the conditional mean, quantile regression offers a systematic strategy for examining how covariates influence the location, scale and shape of the entire response distribution. This monograph is the first comprehensive treatment of the subject, encompassing models that are linear and nonlinear, parametric and nonparametric. The author has devoted more than 25 years of research to this topic. The methods in the analysis are illustrated with a variety of applications from economics, biology, ecology and finance. The treatment will find its core audiences in econometrics, statistics, and applied mathematics in addition to the disciplines cited above.

Couldn't understand a word of it.......2007-07-10
Maybe I'm thick, but I couldn't get an idea from this book of what quantile regression (QR) is nor how to implement it. Instead there were the same papers you can find on the web. This is a book for someone who already understands QR and, er, doesn't need this book.
Make a stand against mathematical opacity! Here's another example of the genre: The EM Algorithm and Extensions

Good book to read. There are many potential applications of quantile regression, e.g. growth analysis where patients and physicians are interested in percentiles, VaR where the statistic itself is a quantile metric. In addition to this book, one may also take a look at the experimental version of quantile regression in SAS - the manual itself is pretty good also.

Book Description
Quantile Regression, the first book of Hao and Naiman's two-book series, establishes the seldom recognized link between inequality studies and quantile regression models. Though separate methodological literature exists for each subject, the authors seek to explore the natural connections between this increasingly sought-after tool and research topics in the social sciences. Quantile regression as a method does not rely on assumptions as restrictive as those for the classical linear regression; though more traditional models such as least squares linear regression are more widely utilized, Hao and Naiman show, in their application of quantile regression to empirical research, how this model yields a more complete understanding of inequality. Inequality is a perennial concern in the social sciences, and recently there has been much research in health inequality as well. Major software packages have also gradually implemented quantile regression. Quantile Regression will be of interest not only to the traditional social science market but other markets such as the health and public health related disciplines.
Key Features:
Establishes a natural link between quantile regression and inequality studies in the social sciences
Contains clearly defined terms, simplified empirical equations, illustrative graphs, empirical tables and graphs from examples
Includes computational codes using statistical software popular among social scientists
Oriented to empirical research

Book Description
Traditional econometric analysis concentrate on classical methods which are far from suitable handling actual economic problems. Modern econometric analysis tries to develop new approaches from an economic perspective. As a consequence, there is less of a unified econometric theory than in former times. Specific branches which require specific methods have been established. Modern time series and duration analysis, panel data analysis, microeconometrics, evaluation methods, and specific data problems are examples of these new approaches. In this book leading German econometricians in different fields present survey articles of the most important new methods in econometrics. The book gives an overview of the field and it shows progress made in recent years and remaining problems.

Description:
This paper develops a Bayesian framework for Tobit quantile regression. Our approach is organized around a likelihood function that is based on the asymmetric Laplace distribution, a choice that turns out to be natural in this context. We discuss families of prior distributions on the quantile regression vector that lead to proper posterior distributions with finite moments. We show how the posterior distribution can be sampled and summarized by Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. A method for comparing alternative quantile regression models is also developed and illustrated. The techniques are illustrated with both simulated and real data. In particular, in an empirical comparison, our approach out-performed two other common classical estimators.

Description:
Knowledge of how South Korean firms choose their capital structures has particular value due to the country's specific corporate structure and the role of leverage in the evolution of its financial crisis of 1997 and recovery. Using a large panel for the years 1992-2001, we investigate the evolution and determinants of Korean firms' capital structure and focus on differences between firms in different quantiles of the debt-capital distribution. Conditional quantile regressions show that while variables associated with standard models of asymmetric information costs are significant throughout the distribution, there are considerable differences, including differences in sign, in their impact on firms with different degrees of leverage. Those observed nonlinearities in the determinants of capital structure are consistent with a model of capital structure that includes both costs resulting from asymmetric information and an upper bound on the debt-capital ratio.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Emerging Markets Review, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This article introduces a new model to analyze financial contagion based on a modified coexceedance measure. We use the quantile regression framework to examine the occurrences and the degrees of coexceedances. Contagion is defined as the crisis-specific coexceedance not explained by the covariates for different quantiles. Our approach can identify the extent of contagion and also reveal linear and non-linear linkages between contagion and its determinants. Estimation results for daily stock index returns show that ''some'' contagion exists and is predictable within and across regions. Furthermore, contagion depends on a regional (world) market return and its volatility and is stronger for extreme negative returns than for extreme positive returns. An analysis of the evolution of coexceedances additionally reveals clusters of extremes. Finally, the computation of conditional densities shows the impact of different influence factors on the entire conditional distribution of coexceedances.

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Energy & Buildings, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Estimation of energy performance indexes, like the heating curve or the energy signature, requires robust regression of the heating losses on the outdoor temperature. The solution proposed in this paper is to use the range between the 1st and the 3rd quartile of the quantile-quantile (q-q) plot to check if the heating losses and the outdoor temperature have the same distribution and, if yes, to perform the regression in this range of the q-q plot. The result is a model that conserves its prediction performance for data sets of the outdoor temperature different of those used for parameter identification. The robust model gives the overall heat transfer coefficient and the base temperature, and it may be used to estimate the energy consumption for data sets of the outdoor temperature coming from different time-space locations.
