Explore the connections between the space program, the occult and science fiction.......2007-09-13

This was a good read but I get the feeling that the full story of Parsons will never be known. Parsons was a rocket scientist who was one of the pioneers in the field. He was heavily into the occult, a protege of Aleister Crowley as well as L. Ron Hubbard. Hubbard later went on to swindle Parsons out of a large sum of money but not before he and Parsons conducted the infamous "Babylon Working" ceremonial magic rituals. Parsons died by blowing himself up at his home labratory which was ruled an accident but considering Parsons was the worlds greatest authority on rocket fuel at the time of his death many believe that he was set up and murdered. Most people really have no clue as to how much overlap there has always been been between the space program, the occult and science fiction. This book is one to dig into if you want to explore those connections.

Excellent work on an extrodinary man.......2006-09-09

This book examines in detail the life of Jack Parsons, friend of Alister Crowley and rocket scientist of Jet Propulsion Labratory fame. Lots of juicy details! The author appears to have more than a passing knowledge of Thelema, as he can explain and embellish on ceremonial material with ease. Fascinating information on a legendary man!

Not for most readers.......2006-07-22

I was intrigued by an article in a newspaper that summarized Jack Parson's unique life, citing this book as a source of information. As a scientist, knowing some aerojet and JPL people where Jack worked, and having spent a few years nearby in Pasadena, this book looked promising.

For me it was unreadable. Even though I have enjoyed many wacky books along the lines of the Illuminatus Trilogy, science fiction, and biography, the mumbo-jumbo here got in the way of the story.

Specifically, over-interpretations of events that were doubtless coincidences and pointless odd mystical digressions drained the reality and the flow from the narrative. The author should have better separated fact and plausible interpretations from his own offbeat ideas, as likely applies to his subject, as well.

I'm glad I found him.......2006-07-04

I had not heard of Jack Parsons, but one boring day at work, I started surfing and one link lead to another and I came across a snippet about his life and it sounded so bizarre that I had to read more about him. What an interesting and tragic life, starting from his mother divorcing his father for adultery, while he was still an infant and ending with his mother committing suicide within hours of his tragic death.

He led the epitome of a double life; rocket scientist by day, antichrist by night. I have to admit, even though I didn't get much out of the chapters about his discovery of rocket fuel (I'm a chick) I could still appreciate what he accomplished professionally.

It was his nightlife that intrigued me. I wonder what kinds of things really happened at the house on Orange Grove? Did he really summon demons? Did he learn any secrets? The book also hints as to where L. Ron Hubbard got his ideas for Scientology. I would like to have known more about what happened between them, besides Jack's wife and money running off with Hubbard.

I recommend this book because he lived a fascinating life and because he seems like someone who should be remembered.

A joy to read.......2006-06-02

I had so much fun reading this book. It is an excellant work on OTO and occult history. It tells it like it is and was. It exposes L Ron Hubbard and what a rip off he was of the occult movement of that time. Parson's was a most intriguing character. I recommend reading it. It is a good read and quick.

Frank Longo is the best .......2007-01-18

I bought this book because Frank Longo wrote the crosswords. These puzzles are the toughest that I know of but the clues are practical and intelligent. You do not have to come up with answers to obscure and exotic questions and you do not have to be a French language expert.

I didn't know it was for younger audiences.......2007-01-15

Unfortunately, I bought this for my 42 year old boyfriend who really enjoys Suduko. Had I known that it was for a younger crowd, I would not have purchased this one. Fortunately, he has a 10 year old daughter. I included it in her stocking.
Perhaps you should always make sure that the age range is listed in the full description ???

This book helps investors evaluate REITs and identify those with the greatest investment potential. Finally, it provides the reader with a detailed discussion of likely future changes anticipated for this unique invetment vehicle.

Good book for real estate practitioners and lay investors who are interested in REITs.......2006-05-05

This book is the most authoritative analysis and synthesis of modern scholarly research on different complicated issues surrounding REITs. No currently available books can examine this investment vehicle as comprehensive and organised as this one.

This book consists of 12 chapters that provide readers with full understanding on how to manage and invest in REITs. Chan et al suggest that REIT stocks are different from real estate investment because investors should judge the value of a REIT stock not only by the assets it holds but also by its organisational structure (traditional vs UPREITs), management style (externally advised vs internally advised REITs), and growth strategy (diversification vs focus). They conclude that equity and mortgage REITs remain an attractive long-term investment vehicles because of their high dividend-payout ratios that generate a more stable income stream when the overall stock market is down and interest rates are low. However, investors should avoid purchasing stocks in the IPO market because the initial-day return of REIT IPOs is far lower than non-REIT stocks. In other words, REIT stocks seldom perform well in the short run.

Chan et al also suggest that REITs with significant investment from institutional investors and adoption of a focused investment strategy will offer more potential opportunities for investors to earn above-average profits. However, they do not recommend investors to buy captive REIT stocks because the sponsor-shareholder conflict will lower the value of the REIT.

This book has its limitation because it was published in 2003. The REIT concept has been becoming very hot in overseas real estate markets, particularly in Europe and Asia. For instance, US REIT players such as GE Capital, ABM, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs have undertaken active property investments in Japan, China, and Hong Kong. I highly recommend Chan et al to add 1 or 2 chapters on investment strategy in emerging markets and the laws and regulations that circumscribe activities in these markets to their next edition.
