A master raconteur.......2007-09-18
I read both books at school in the eighties. I well remember coming across them at the back of the room in my English teacher's large bookcase. I don't remember much, just that they were a great read. Well his first time sticks in my memory....
Solid Gold!.......2007-05-03
There is something about the way in which David Niven writes about other people where you just know they would approve. David Niven always seemed to play the good guy, the hero, the sort of person to whom we would all wish to aspire. Writing about those people with whom he worked and came into contact was, however, a serious departure from acting - and could easily have gone so horribly wrong.
In this book, however, he confirms his credentials as a writer and pours his own brand of humour onto each and every encounter he describes. Not once does he stoop to the level of gossip monger, not once does attack another person.
Instead, we have a first hand account of that golden age of Hollywood written by a master wordsmith who has also mastered the art of writing humour.
Was it me, or did I detect a certain disappointment from within his own relationship?, or was it that David Niven was far too much the perfect gentleman to describe such things.
If you are a fan of the olden days - the golden days of Hollywood, you will enjoy this book. If you simply want a damned good read, you will enjoy this book. In fact, I cannot think of anyone who would not enjoy such an excellent product.

LOVED NIVEN, LOVE HIS BOOKS.......2006-04-03
The stories and writing are incredible and gives you a real sense of what true Hollywood glamor was like back in those wonderful early years. However, I do believe the "our little girl" story was actually about Lana Turner, not Vivien Leigh. He talked about Vivien and Larry Olivier in another book or section of this book, but I doubt it was Vivien that had a breakdown. Nevertheless, the man was a great actor. What a terrible amount of suffering he endured in life and what a tragic death from Lou Gehrig's disease. Would you believe he and his second wife aren't even buried together! Too bad he's not buried next to his first wife Primula in the church where they were married. Primmie was his true love. He was blessed to have his two boys as comfort after her tragic death at a party at Ty Power's house. Get both the books and read them, you'll enjoy every word and all the inside scoop on lots of famous Hollywood folks we all still love.
The Man could act & write!.......2005-11-03
One of the better books to come out about the "Golden Age of Hollywood". Niven gives a good and funny look at his career and the life back in those days. (The Sad part was that a lot of pain & sadness also followed him with the death of his 1st wife in a tragic accident & then marrying the wrong 2nd wife.He also sadly worked himself to death because of his fear of poverty.)
None the less a 1st rate book about a real life of the party Man & great Actor. I think that Sandhurst must be proud of him!
Bring on the Empty Horses.......2005-07-12
I loved, loved, loved this book! One of the most satisfying and enjoyable books I've ever read. Funny, poignant, interesting, educational, and extremely well-written. I've passed it along to others but will have to order another one for myself as the pages are falling apart and I do plan to give it another read one of these days.

Just another great read from Niven........2007-05-03
David Niven will always be remembered for being a quintessential Englishman. Being an actor he was able to count many of Hollywood's greatest stars as his personal friends. In later years went on to write 2 books about his own life and, quite naturally, his many famous friends and acquaintances got mentioned along the way.
The first of these books was called "The Moon's a Balloon" (first published in 1971) and the second "Bring on the Empty Horses" (1975).
This book, which is simply called "Niven" is both books, bound together under a single cover.
In their own right, each book became a huge best-seller when first published and were both hailed as some of the funniest and entertaining books ever written. They will still make you laugh even when reading them for a second time.
The humour "may" be somewhat diminished for those who do not recognise some of the greatest names from yesterday's Hollywood, but I found this book to be as excellent today as it ever was. After all, a good book will always stand the test of time - and in this package you get two for the price of one.

Great Book about old Hollywood.......2007-09-10
I just finished reading this book tonight and it was wonderful and interesting..He has first hand stories of Hollywood greats such as Errol Flynn,Clark Gable, Sam Goldwyn, Humphrey Bogart, and many others. You can tell that Mr.Niven really loved life. One of the great things about this book is that he had nice things to say about those he wrote about.

In the non-Aristotelian, non-Euclidean, non-Newtonian space between the walls of the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Los Angeles exist bats that can fly through lead barriers, spore-ingesting pronged ants, elaborate theories of memory, and a host of other off-kilter scientific oddities that challenge the traditional notions of truth and fiction. Lawrence Weschler's book, expanded from an article for Harper's, is, at turns, a tour of the museum, a profile of its founder and curator, David Wilson, and a meditation on the role of imagination and authority in all museums, in science and in life. Mr. Wilson's Cabinet of Wonder is an exquisite piece of "magic realist nonfiction" that will prove utterly captivating.
Book Description
Pronged ants, horned humans, a landscape carved on a fruit pit--some of the displays in David Wilson's Museum of Jurassic Technology are hoaxes. But which ones? As he guides readers through an intellectual hall of mirrors, Lawrence Weschler revisits the 16th-century "wonder cabinets" that were the first museums and compels readers to examine the imaginative origins of both art and science. Illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
The author is in on the joke ... if it is, in fact, a joke.......2007-06-16
Splendid little read, profound in its own way, and outright devilish. Absolutely in keeping with its subject matter; anything shy of devilish would have been cheating.
The Museum of Jurassic Technology, to trim descriptions to the bare minimum in the interests of time and of not spoiling the fun, is a museum that may or may not be entirely a joke on the part of its owner. If it is a joke, it is the most ornately gilded, realistically depicted, and intellectually rewarding joke yet perpetrated on the good citizens of California.
Lawrence Weschler may or may not, himself, be in on the joke. The whole thing, if it is not a joke, is a delicious insight into what the modern world has gained and lost, and an attempt to restore some of what's disappeared.
Well worth the two hours of reading. If I had more time, I would certainly recreate the research that Weschler did when he started to get obsessed with the MJT.
A most amazing journey with an elloqent guide.......2007-04-20
Honestly, when I worked in Culver City, I would drive by the Museum of Jurassic Technology and wonder just what was in there. I read the articles in the L.A. Times and still I could not understand what it was about. And even when I finally got to the museum, I was mystified. What was the connection? What was it all about? Finally, I have my answer. And more. This book was a superlative read. Mr Weschler never flags in his focus and his precision of language and yet doesn't overwhelm his subject matter. It would be so easy to try and write a fictional story about the museum as opposed to trying to distill and tell the real story. It is very slippery! You will not be dissappointed in this book. And you don't have to go to the museum to enjoy it. But if you read the book, you will be COMPELLED to visit the museum.
An Education.......2007-01-04
Although Mr. Wilson's Cabnet of Wonders is at first slightly confussing and plotless, much like the type of museum disscussed in the book, it is eventually leaves you with a sense of...well...wonder. The book is construsted to take you through the wonders of a "wonder cabnet." I found it to be an education on what it mean to learn, that wonder is a nessisary component.
A Journey into Wonder.......2006-05-11
Lawrence Wescher is not writing a complete treatise on wondercabnets for use in an academic historical society of previously learned fellows. It is much too short and easy to read for that. He is coming at the subject as a newcomer and hoping to bring some of us in with him. I for one am right there. Mr. Wilson's Cabnet of Wonder serves as a perfect introduction to this ultra-fascinating subject that has surprisingly huge implications on our everyday understanding of history. His short summations of the history of the museum itself, and what might be housed within them, are to the point and well researched (I would like to think he threw in a few of his own "made up" references just to keep in the spirit of things although). The anecdotal stories of his mystic encounters with Mr. Wilson are humorous and enlightening. Weschler encourages a healthy skepticism about each exhibit in the MJT (Museum of Jurassic Technology), and indeed about every bit of knowledge we are taught as fact in our upbringing. The wonderful thing about this skepticism is that it leads him on an astonishing journey into The Church of Wonder. He made me a believer in Wonder as a state of mind/heart that perhaps shouldn't be questioned too much, lest we lose it. Be it wonder of Nature's endless imagination or that of man's, I'm hooked.
Therefore, Weschler not only writes about Mr. Wilson's wonder-filled collection, or simply the history of other collections, but they are merely the means to an understanding of that blissful state itself. I began to understand this book as a more of a religious conversion, than a "fact" filled catalogue.
Knowledge through Tangent and Explosion.......2006-02-24
This book is so fantastically interesting. The way Weschler describes the modern curiosity cabinet of David Wilson is not through bland description; much like Wilson himself, Weschler weaves stories and ancedotes into his narrative. The book wraps itself up with a spiraling metaphor which does nothing except leave the reader wanting to visit Mr. Wilson's museum and explore the world of knowledge through tangent and mere coincidence.

Book Description
Approximately 50 truly astonishing card tricks are demonstrated and explained in this unusual, beautifully photographed book for young and budding magicians. The distinctive feature of Amazing Card Tricks is the series of how-to photos, each close-up picture showing a pair of white-gloved hands in the step-by-step, sleight-of-hand process of manipulating a card deck to perform a magic trick. An opening sequence shows various ways to shuffle a card deckand then to false shuffle in a way that gives the illusion of the real thing. Author Jon Tremain, a professional magician, also teaches his readers how to force a spectator's choice in selecting a card. He starts his repertory of tricks with a relatively easy one called X Marks the Spot. A spectator chooses a card, remembers it, puts it back into the deck, then immediately retrieves it after the deck is thoroughly shuffled. The tricks grow more challengingand more amazingas young readers progress through the pages of this vastly entertaining book. Bonus features include the author's method of fortune-telling with cards, and tips on creating a professional appearance while performing tricks.
Book Description
The cards in this kit may look like an ordinary deck of playing cards. But looks can be deceiving
These are tricks magicians and playing-card impresarios have used for centuries to confound the common man, captivate audiences, and make women swoon. Now you, too, can attain that power. Lift the lid, read the illustrated book, and explore the possibilities of The Amazing Magical Wonder Deck.
The magic box contains a 52-card "tapered" deck indistinguishable from ordinary playing cards, but slightly tapered at the bottom that allows magicians-in-training to keep track of cards removed from the deck and astonish friends by appearing to read their minds! The kit also contains a set of 16 "gimmicked" cards, including:
- An Eight of Clubs that makes a matchstick levitate!
- A Jack of Spades that can be pierced with a pencil without leaving a hole!
- Four kings that mysteriously transform into four queens!
- Two fours that mysteriously transform into blank cards!
- Plus two-sided cards, disappearing cards, and more!

Surprisingly Good.......2006-06-11
Didn't expect much out of this one, but it actually turned out to be a great deck for anyone who wants to do magic. It has 16 great 'gimmicked' cards, and a full 52 card 'stripper' deck, that enables you to do great tricks. It also comes with a very thick instruction book, written by 'Mr. Mysterio', a magicicain from the 20's. There is also something of a plot line to the instruction book, with funny intruductions to the tricks. If your a beggenner or an advanced magician, this an amazing buy!

A pro in No Time!.......2003-04-25
I had this book for a couple of days and I was amazing my friends right away! Simple to learn tricks and great illustrations make it easy to become that magician that goes around making people "Oooh" and "Aaah." Highly recommended.
The Amazing Book of Magic and Card Tricks.......2002-01-02
This is an amazing book, I have learned alot from it. Its full-color pictures make the book easy to follow. It gives step-by-step instructions which are also easy to follow. If you plan on becoming a magician or are getting a book for a young magician this would be it. I would also suggest 101 Amazing Card Tricks.
This is a very good book........1999-08-21
This is an excellent magic book. The instructions are good, and the photos help a lot. I can gladly recommend this book. But, one of the most helpful things about it, is that it gives the aspiring magician tips on how to keep the audience's intrest. With great tricks for friends and living rooms, this can be very useful advice. In conculsion, this is a very good use of your money.
An excellent book for beginners.......1999-07-27
Although somewhat expensive for the number of effects it contains, the book is worthwhile since the effects chosen are excellent, and there is a good variety of effects. There is also a value to having numerous color photographs. Overall, I am happy that I purchased this book and can recommend it.
The best.......1999-06-17
This is a wonderful book for beginning and intermediate magicians. Experts can learn something, too. The photographs and directions are exceptionally clear and visual.
The selection of effects taught is first rate, and modern, unlike many other books that teach the corniest old stuff. There are card tricks, coin tricks, rope tricks, and all the rest. A good variety that should satisfy any taste. Some tricks are suitable for close-up, some for the living room (old timers say "parlour") and some that could work on a stage.
Best of all, there is first rate advice about how to be a good magician: how to please the audience (not yourself, the audience), how to tell a story, how to make a routine, and how to grow your magic skills.
In my opinion, if you only buy one book, this is it.

Excelent view of all TOC tools.......2006-08-16
I have studied a lot of TOC bibliography but this book connects all in a very simple and easy way to learn
Good introduction to E. Goldratt's Viable Vision Proposition.......2005-03-09
In this book, Gerry attempts primarily to demonstrate two things. First, that contemporaneous complex and fast-changing business environment can best be managed through simplicity. Second, that the successful application of this approach can unleash the potential for organisations to achieve, in less than four years, net profits equal to current sales (Eli Goldratt's Viable Vision Proposition).
After introducing Eli Goldratt's Viable Vision Proposition in chapters 1 and 2, Gerry provides a concise summary about the frameworks of reference, logic, application and expected results when applying the Theory of Constraints (TOC) to the different areas of the organisation (chapters 3 to 10). With this approach he seeks to prove his first claim.
Throughout the book, the reader will find examples and valuable information about the applicability of the TOC to managing businesses operations. Also, about new business propositions that organisations can take advantage of and that arise thanks to this TOC's management approach. Without doubt, Gerry's book makes the reader wiser and does help experience a paradigm shift.
Finally, and in Part IV of the book, Gerry describes a powerful buy-in process (chapter 11) and criteria to construct lasting competitive advantage (chapter 12) with chapter 13 explaining different phases through which managers can aspire to move their organisations towards a period of unparalleled growth.
If the reader is in need of gaining a good overview of TOC and of getting new breakthrough ideas to increase organisation's competitiveness and sales, this book won't disappoint. However, the reader must be warned that this book is not sufficient neither to implement some of the changes necessary to achieve sustainable results nor to develop and implement a Viable Vision that will generate, in less than four years, net profit equal to current sales. To this ends, the reader must seek professional advice!

First TOC book for smart but busy exsecutives.......2005-02-23
I have just completed translating this book into Japanese. Actually I translated several TOC books into Japanese in the past, because many Japanese readers want them to read in Japanese. However, in order for those who want to understand what TOC is all about, they had to read several books in the past before they understand whole of TOC and its implications to their business.
One of the unique points of this book, in my opinion, is that this is the first TOC book ever written specifically aiming at smart but busy executives as the target audience. In the Acknowledgments, Gerry wrote "...my original idea - a short, to the point Theory of Constraints (TOC) book for executives." Exactly this is why I decided to translate this book into Japanese so that the Japanese executives can read it quickly in Japanese without language barrier. Therefore, by investing little time, say, while traveling, executives can grasp all of the guts of TOC and its implications to their business.
The second uniqueness of this book is that, although it is concise, it is still comprehensive to cover every aspect of TOC - in other words it is full of messages that can make your business achieve high growth, and therefore, these messages should not certainly be overlooked by the Japanese executives who are keen to regain their success in world markets by applying the holistic approach explained plainly in this book to marketing and logistics.
A must read for CEOs serious about explosive growth!.......2005-02-04
Gerry has done a nice job of explaining what a Viable Vision is and the Viable Vision process. If you are seriously interested in turning your current sales level into your profit level in 4 years then you should read this book.
It sounds outrageous doesn't it? But out of 100 companies who have applied for a free Viable Vision, 70 of them are in the Viable Vision process. After reading the book, I recommend attending one of Dr Goldratt's Viable Visin Offer Events. You can judge it for yourself, hear references, see the reaction of other CEOs, and apply for your free 2 hour meeting with Goldratt Consulting. You can get more information on the Viable Vision Offer Events at www.Viable-Vision.com
TOC summary with essence.......2004-12-08
This work is summarizing very well the essentials of the TOC
set of tools and strategies. Yet it is done in away that enable
the reader to get insights about why these theories can add value
to your businesses or endeavors.
