5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for wannabe screenwriters.......2000-02-06

Bill Froug's book was first published in the seventies as a reaction against the autuer theory. What Froug did was interview some of the most respected screenwriters in the business along with a few new risers and ask them about screenwriting.

What emerges from the interviews is the that each writer has their own particular techniques for screenwriting. There is no one set way for writing screenplays. A much more useful insight into the process of screenwriting than the books currently available.

The full list of screenwriters are: Nunnally Johnson (Grapes of Wrath), I.A. L Diamond (The Apartment), Buck henry (The Graduate), Stirling Silliphant, William Bowers (The Gunfighter), Walter B. Newman (Great Escape), Edward Anhalt (Jeremiah Johnson), Lewis John Carlino, Jonathan Axelrod and David Giler.

I feared the book would concentrate more on anacdotes than techniques but the interviewees dispense out the essential information on how they personally handle writing and what they think is a 'good' script. Save space on your bookshelf for it.

P.S. Hiliarious reading is David Giler talking about his experience with a troublesome 'autuer' during the filming of Myra Breckinbridge.

    3 out of 5 stars A disappointing sequel.......2000-05-30

Froug's follows up his first book with a average sequel. He interviews quite a few 'new' screenwriters including Dan O' Bannon (Alien), Daniel Pyne(White Sands), Greg Widen(Highlander) and the writing duo of Jack Epps and Jim Cash (the original writers of Top Gun). These writers are succesful, talented but they don't really have that much to say about screenwriting.

One of the appeal of the first book was to read interviews with writers who had already written classics such as 'The Apartment' and 'The Great Escape'. To hear what they thought about the process of screenwriting. With this book, it mostly concentrates on the interviewees careers. A real mixed bag but still well worth exploring.

            Book Description

Oprah Winfrey is arguably the most well-known and most well-liked woman in the world today. Every day her television show reaches millions of viewers, and if you include her magazine, Web site, book club, television network, and movie production company, her influence is without comparison. Indeed, she has been nicknamed "The Queen of All Media."

Yet unlike many celebrities, Winfrey's is an overwhelmingly and unerringly positive public persona. In this book, religion reporter Marcia Nelson explores the spiritual dimensions that are prevalent in all aspects of the Oprah Winfrey media empire. Though Oprah is rarely explicitly religious on her television show or magazine, Nelson points out that there are several major Christian themes that weave through these aspects of her life and work: confession, redemption, healing, mission, forgiveness, and salvation. Nelson concludes that Oprah is a "compelling spiritual teacher in a spiritually eclectic and ever-practical America." This book will appeal both to Oprah fans and people who are fascinated by the intersection of religion and popular culture.

4 out of 5 stars Good book of general information.......2007-01-10

This book was decent, but didn't contain any deep information which can't be found in other books as well.

4 out of 5 stars A very good "starter" book........2006-06-05

My pastor preached about "the Real Jesus" today, and even used parts of this book in his message. I didn't know he was going to take Miss Winfrey as his sermon text today.

I read the book, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't agree with OPRAH's confusion concerning the exclusive claims of Jesus Christ, but I do believe that the "attraction" factor concerning her empire and fame has valuable lessons to teach many Christians in this Postmodern, 21st century world in which we live.

If the church practiced some of the practical principles which OPRAH has mastered over the last 20 years, we (the church) would see dramatic changes in how we relate to each other and the world.

            Grant it be so.

5 out of 5 stars An informative theological exploration of the famed and prestigious television talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey.......2006-03-11

The Gospel According To Oprah by Marcia Z. Nelson is an informed and informative theological exploration of the famed and prestigious television talk show hostess Oprah Winfrey. Packed from cover to cover with details and distinctly informative specifics on Oprah's passion for the Christian Gospel, author and spiritual informant Marcia Z. Nelson deftly presents a truly inspirational book of insight and inspiration. The Gospel According To Oprah is very strongly recommended reading for anyone seeking greater sense of their spiritual self, and is a "must read" for all Oprah fans.

5 out of 5 stars If you don't watch O, this will help you get why others do.......2005-11-09

Not being a TV watcher, Marcia Nelson at least helped me understand what was the allure of Oprah. I appreciated the categories and organization of this short, but informative book. For Oprah fans and those who wonder about the show, this helps sort it out, not sparing the criticism, but also giving the reader an appreciation of the Queen of Media Appeal.

4 out of 5 stars It might just change your mind..........2005-10-24

I've never paid much attention to Oprah's television show, but this book helped persuade me to watch it now and then. The author shows that even though Oprah doesn't use a lot of religious jargon or overtly Christian messages, she continually preaches a social justice gospel: do unto others as you would have them do unto you. In an age of celebrity excess--a trap that Oprah does occasionally fall into--here is one celebrity putting her money where her mouth is to do some good. A lively, readable book, for fans and doubters alike.

            Book Description

"This book is great fun to read and highly informative." --Raymond Smullyan

"This is a delightful and fascinating book that will surely appeal to anyone who is fascinated by, or infuriated by, mental puzzles." --Keith Devlin

Why are humans fascinated by puzzles? Puzzle-addict and renowned communication theorist Marcel Danesi takes readers on an exploration of the philosophical implications of the puzzle instinct. Puzzles are as old as humanity and the human instinct for puzzles betrays the larger perpetual search for meaning to life. Danesi not only has included many in this book to puzzle over, he explores why we like to puzzle over them as well. Among the smaller puzzles in this book are the solutions to some much larger puzzles: What is the raison dâetre that puzzles serve, why did they emerge at the same time in history as myth, magic and the occult arts, and why canât we put them down.

This is an overview of the origins of the puzzle in human history, as well as a more detailed look at the various types in existence, complete with some examples.

It also mentions some of the famous puzzle makers of history, and the influence of puzzles on mathematics and science and vice versa.

5 out of 5 stars The Puzzle Is: Why Puzzles?.......2002-09-13

Twenty-five years ago, there was a boom in sales of a fist-sized ingenious contraption of plastic, a fractured cube of multi-colored sides, the pieces of which could be twisted so that all the six faces had different colors (easy) or back to the one configuration where each face had only its own color (hard). The ubiquitous Rubik's Cube came and went (well, it is a puzzle classic in its simplicity; you can still buy it, but the fad is gone), but there will be some other puzzle fad not long from now. The urge to figure out puzzles seems to be as ingrained in human personality as the urge to make language or art. In _The Puzzle Instinct: The Meaning of Puzzles in Human Life_ (Indiana University Press), Marcel Danesi, a professor of semiotics and anthropology, tries to figure out the meta-puzzle: life has lots of mysteries and complications. Why should we want to manufacture more?

Danesi's book turns out to be a spirited review of puzzle history, and the history is a long one. The _Ahmes Papyrus_, nearly four thousand years old, is one of the earliest surviving documents of civilization anywhere, and is essentially a series of mathematical puzzles. It is significant that its title is _Directions for Attaining Knowledge of All Dark Things_. Charlemagne, the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, had a puzzle-maker on staff, and King Louis XIII of France had a Royal Anagrammatist. A description of Rubik's Cube is included, of course, as well as many other puzzle fads. The popularity of crossword puzzles is undimmed since they were introduced in the _New York World_ in 1913; the original one is reproduced here. Crosswords became an overnight sensation, and many people still have to do their crossword puzzle every day. Anyone familiar with puzzle literature will find much familiar here; classics like the Towers of Hanoi, magic squares (the best one is by Benjamin Franklin), the River-Crossing Puzzle, and various optical illusions are all included. The puzzle that gives us the exhortation "Think outside the box" is here, as is the four-color map theorem, Archimedes's Cattle Problem, cryptograms, and tangrams. No one reading this book could deny that making and solving puzzles is a universal human trait.

But why? Danesi finally comes to no certain conclusion, but there are some good reasons that he presents. One is that all of us enjoy the "Aha!" experience, the inexplicable flash of insight that can present an answer to something the likes of which we have never before encountered. Puzzles are escapism, but of a peculiar form invoking anxiety and curiosity after the puzzle is presented and pleasurably relieved only by finding the solution (or looking in the answer section). The most satisfactory answer is that like pure science, solving puzzles has been good for us. It is certainly true that working on puzzles is pleasurable, and can be instructive for the individuals trying to figure them out. In a larger sense (and this is a theme presented repeatedly here), puzzles have sparked mathematical revolutions. When Euler set out to solve the Königsberg bridge problem (citizens had known they could not walk around the river town crossing each bridge once and only once), he invented networks, and this eventually became topology. The paradoxes of Zeno (such as the runner being unable to reach the end of a race because he first has to go halfway, and then half of the remaining course, and then half of that, ad infinitum) were a spur for developing the concepts of limits and calculus. When Bertrand Russell tried logically to resolve his barber paradox (If a village barber shaves all and only those villagers who do not shave themselves, does he shave himself?), the resolutions themselves had paradoxes, and only Gödel's famous Incompleteness Theorem showed that full resolutions would be forever impossible. Puzzles are good for us, and this collection provides plenty to think about.

This book is very well written, easy to understand and has lots of example graphs that illustrate the concepts. Being a beginner myself, I highly recommend this book. However if you already know what you are doing I would suggest that you look for something more advanced.

            2 out of 5 stars Not worth 20 bucks.......2003-10-27

If you look at the table of contents, you will see that the number of pages devoted to basic technical analysis indicators is absolutely minimal (e.g., MACD). This book is only 59 pages and, therefore, omits all but the most basic. I just don't think that it's worth $20. As many of you know, you can go to various technical anaysis web sites and print out---for FREE---equally/ more helpful information. This publication is really more of an introductory pamphlet than a bona fide book on TA.

You get what you pay for on this one. Clear writing with good examples but a beginners guide only. There isn't anything in this book you could not find on the web. Also have noticed the author not speaking what is obvious in the charts regarding the market when interviewed so far in 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Number One Value In Technical Analysis Books.......2001-03-20

Shhhh....want to know a secret? This book delivers everything one needs to know about chart reading at a far friendlier price than Murphy's other books or any other technical analysis book. Read and re-read this book then check out Technical Analyst Gary B. Smith's column at thestreet dot com, and explore stockcharts dot com also. You will be ready to use technical analysis to read charts instantly very shortly after doing the above steps. This book, published in year 2000, includes data about the Spring 2000 NASDAQ meltdown. 2 out of 5 stars spring house is for dummies .......2007-07-20

all those cute little things do not tie the real concepts together.
This dumbs it down and does not get to the point. Much better books are out there.
