Book Description
This book chronicles how film-makers have re-imagined Shakespeare's plays from the earliest exhibitions in music halls and nickelodeons to today's multi-million dollar productions shown in megaplexes. The new edition updates the chronology to the year 2003 and includes a new chapter on such recent films as John Madden's Shakespeare in Love, Kenneth Branagh's Love's Labours Lost, Michael Almereyda's Hamlet, and Billy Morrissette's Scotland, Pa. An up-to-date filmography, bibliography, and index of names makes it invaluable as a one-volume reference work. First Edition Hb (1999): 0-521-59404-9 First Edition Pb (2001): 0-521-00028-9

A Short Guide to Writing about Film (Short Guides Series)
ASIN: 0521000289 |
Book Description
A History of Shakespeare on Screen: A Century of Film and Television chronicles how film-makers have re-imagined Shakespeare’s plays in moving images from their earliest exhibition in nickelodeons to today’s multi-million dollar productions shown in multiplexes. Topics covered include the silent era, Hollywood in the 1930s, the films of Laurence Olivier and Orson Welles, the transgressive cinema of Jarman and Greenaway, and the renaissance of the Shakespeare film with Kenneth Branagh in the 1990s. The book is truly international in scope, looking not only at screen adaptations in the UK and the US but also at the films of Kozintsev, Kurosawa, Zeffirelli and others. A filmography, bibliography and index of names make it invaluable as a one-volume reference work for specialists, while its accessible style will ensure that it appeals to enthusiasts and film-goers as well as to a more academic audience.

one of the better books about shakespear on screen.......2001-02-01
every year there are 3 - 5 new adaption of Shakespear-plays for the silverscreen. Good written book but not the lexica-type reference work. Only a few pictures. a complete filmographie with credits is unfortunately missing. other books about Shakespear on screen: "Shakespeare on Film" by Robert Shaughnessy; "Shakespeare in the Movies: From the Silent Era To The Present Day" by Douglas Brode, "Shakespeare, the Movie" by Lynda E. Book Description
Designed for philosophers as well as readers with no particular philosophical background, the essays in this lively book are grouped into four amusing acts. Act One looks at the four Seinfeld characters through a philosophical lens and includes Jerry and Socrates: The Examined Life? Act Two examines historical philosophers from a Seinfeldian standpoint and offers Plato or Nietzsche? Time, Essence, and Eternal Recurrence in Seinfeld. Act Three, Untimely Meditations by the Water Cooler, explores philosophical issues raised by the show, such as, Is it rational for George to do the opposite? And Act Four, Is There Anything Wrong with That?, discusses ethical problems of everyday life using Seinfeld as a basis. Seinfeld and Philosophy also provides a guide to Seinfeld episodes and a chronological list of the philosophers cited in this book.

Great Read.......2007-07-06
My philosphy proffessor gave us a list of books to choose from so that we could write a paper on it. This was on the list and since I have always been a huge Seinfeld fan I bought it. I thoroghly enjoyed the book. It made me think about the characters more than I ever did watching the show, and it even made me laugh a little once or twice. I highly recommend this book!
best of these type books.......2006-04-30
but this is not saying mcuh because the rest are very bad. What each of these books needs are realy thoughtful thinkers who know philosophy, who i n this case know Seinfeld, and who have sense of humor to go with insights. Writers are dull, take themselves too seriously even when they have something okay to say.
Not Even Close.......2006-02-05
If you don't know much about Seinfeld or philosophy you might enjoy this book, but if you're a Seinfeld nut then avoid it at all costs. The show is incorrectly quoted several times and "facts" are also made up at times. The summarization of Socrates' allegory of the cave on page nine misstates some pretty major details. I suffered through the book until page 47 when the writer talks about how Kramer and Mickey embrace communism in the episode "The Race." Anyone who has seen that show even once knows that Mickey is trying to talk Kramer out of communism throughout the show. And even though Kramer definitely shows interest in communism it is quite a stretch to say is becomes an "ardent" communist. Rather than being an enjoyable read this book frustrated me enough that i quit on page 51. In all fairness the rest of the book may be excellent, but i'll probably never know.
SEINFELD'S COMEDIC INSPIRATION.......2006-01-24
Yes, Seinfeld is always funny. Here's what he said about his comedic inspiration: "[Lois Nettleton] was married to Jean Shepherd. He's the guy who invented talk radio and really formed my entire comedic sensibility. Yes. I learned how to do comedy from Jean Shepherd." He said this in his commentary for "The Gymnast" episode on the sitcom's DVD set, sixth season. Who is Jean Shepherd? See the book EXCELSIOR, YOU FATHEAD! THE ART AND ENIGMA OF JEAN SHEPHERD.
One of the worse books ever.......2005-10-21
Amazingly bad book. As someone who loves Seinfeld and Philosophy, I found this book insulting for both, and espacially for the readers. I tried reading parts of it, and simply couldn't bring myself to finish any chapter. Just a bunch of jiberish from people who apperently don't like, know, or "get" Seinfeld very much.
The straw that got me to finally give up (and write this review) is when I read that Seinfeld was not the first to write a comedy about nothing, and that "Much ado about nothing" is also such a comedy. What, the writer just googled "about nothing" to find something which has a similar title ??? Discusting.

It is everything you need in a strategy guide.......2004-04-26
This book does a great job of telling you about each senario and the reason for specific senario changes. It doesn't give you so much that it spoils the game, but it is well worth it and almost essential for a game like this.
A Fair book for a great game........2003-12-02
I bought it new and paid too much. It is a so-so book. But used it goes for $7. I could see paying $7, but nothing more. Wyatt Kaldenberg
Rushed to print.......2002-11-04
I am an enormous Empire Earth: The Art of Conquest fan. This book is very good in its treatment of the civilizations and individual units but very weak in the campaign walkthroughs. Don't expect the walkthroughs to give you all that much of an advantage during gameplay. Also, I have counted at least 5 typos and I've only owned it a few weeks. They must have really rushed to get this to market.
The unit descriptions are outstanding. Worth the price just for that.

Customer Reviews:
Good for a short course, but a short course only.......2004-08-04
TA is a highly sophisticated topic which cannot be covered thoroughly with a 316 page book. That's for sure. In fact, the author had been honest not to over promise with the humble title of his book. The scope of discussion is limited to chart patterns, trendlines, channels, moving averages, Fibonnaci numbers, MACD, Stochastics, RSI and a few others. As the author had emphasized his objective to make his book only an introduction to TA, I am not going to comment on the variety of TA tools covered. However, I still want to criticize on some of the weaknesses:
1) Number of real life examples/price charts are few.
2) The choice of parameters for MACD and Stochastics had not been discussed
3) False breakouts are so frequent in the author's graphs samples (that's a fact of life, I admit). However, the author made little attempt to teach readers how to avoid such traps with the use of multiple TA tools.
4) The relative weak Q&A sections that questions are focused on readers' understanding of the definition of jargons instead of the usage of TA tools.
Though the price is affordable, I am hesitant to recommend it to any aspiring trader/investor who are serious to get an elementary but quality course on TA. It's not the cost of the book that matters, but the cost of time and potential trading loss for reading it.
It's a start!.......2003-07-27
In no way is Technical Analysis a easy subject to tackle. It's full of intricacies, formulas, and complexities that most people have a hard time getting a full grasp of what they are trying to accomplish with technical analysis.
Mr. Kaufman does an excellent job of bringing this subject to the reader in a digestible form. As the author of three financial books I can attest to the difficulty of separating the art from the science of technical analysis. In "Futures For Small Speculators" I only bring it up briefly. In this respect Mr. Kaufman shines and exceeds my communication abilities.
This is a great start into the world of Technical Analysis without having to be overwhelmed by mathematics.
I definitely recommend it.
Book Description
The Technical Analysis Course has gained a loyal following for its unique lesson-per chapter format and comprehensive coverage of the tools and strategies of technical analysis. This third edition provides revised and updated details on every key aspect of technical analysis. New sections answer questions on current topics including Bollinger Bands, curved trend lines, moving average convergence-divergence, the market's change to decimal pricing, and much more.
Thomas A. Meyers, C.P.A., C.F.A., C.F.C.U., is chief financial officer for a large insurance group.
Customer Reviews:
A good place to start.......2003-09-14
This book is a great place to start if you know nothing about technical analysis. It is very well organized, and the quizzes help to reinforce the lessons of the text. Meyers starts with basic chart construction and the types of charts, moves through reversal and consolidation patterns, gaps, trendlines and channels, and support and resistance before taking on any computed indicators. Next he moves through moving averages, relative strength, and volume indicators, and finally oscillators. He then digresses to cover point-and-figure charting and candlesticks before concluding the book with a discussion of market and sentiment indicators. Once this material is mastered, the more detailed discussions of Murphy or Edwards and Magee will make a lot more sense.
Outdated, Inaccurate, Expensive.......2003-03-18
I'm so sorry I spent hard-earned money on this book, I wish I had read the reviews here first. I can find very little use in today's market for a collection charts on stock movements from 20 years ago. Of course, history can be a guide, but nothing in this book takes into account all of the changes in trading technology. Most of the "tips" here date from a time when there was no program trading, and no one did any trading at home via the Internet. If you attmept to do technical analysis by calling your full service broker, perhaps you will find something useful in this book (once you get past the series of errors, there are plenty of them). I learned much in the stock market from my bad trades; I just learned something about book buying from this completely regrettable purchase.
Not Very Useful.......2003-03-07
This books seems to have been written to explain the stock market movements during the 1980s. There are a few theories to explain movement of NYSE big board stocks, and almost no coverage of NASDAQ. If you try to map these theories to the NASDAQ-fueled boom ending in 2000 or the slump since then, the author's weakly defined premises break down entirely. This book would have been useful in 1982, but I need to trade in the 2003 market. No help here; in fact, much of it is counter-intuitive. I tested it with a sampling of 10 stocks over a three month period ending in early March 2003. Using the "methods" described in the book, one would have lost money on 9 out of the ten trades (whether long or short). These trades netted an average loss of 28%. The one winner gained 11%. I could not afford to stay with this book's technique's for very long. To be fair, I then tested the methods on 10 more stocks from 1999-2000, when the market was booming. Again, the author's methods failed. Seven losers, averaging 32% loss, two winners averaging a 17% gain, and one break even. Save yourself from market losses, and the loss of money wasted on this book.
Badly Organized Jumble of Techniques.......2003-02-28
This book was assigned reading for a college-level investing course; now I understand why the professor drives an old car and teaches this class instead of making money in the market. In all my years of schooling, I've never encountered something so poorly assembled. I have unearthed a few useful concepts, but they are largely buried in an pile of tired market cliches and chart after chart of dated 1980s investing patterns.
There are many other books on the topic (you can do a search on "technical analysis" right on this Amazon site) that are both current and accurate. I keep a lot of my textbooks after finishing a course, I find them to be useful references. This one will go immediately to the used section of the campus bookstore.
Dated Treatment of "Tech Analysis Lite".......2003-02-27
Much of this book contains some very tired theories on stock movements from generations ago. While stock patterns may have some historic trends, it is a gross oversight in failing to consider how computerized trading has affected both patterns and the timing of trades. This book would have had some use in 1975, but it will hinder the modern technical trader, who must compete with others using state of the art technology. And as others have noted, the text is rife with errors.

Book Description
This classic is the foundation on which technical analysis is built.
Customer Reviews:
Epic for its time.......2003-07-18
The ironic thing is, you couldn't tell it was written in 1932 or 2002 .. the techniques are identical to basic TA today , even the psychology section about cutting losses and trading with the trend sound familiar. Certainly revolutionary when it came out, it's somewhat dated now and a bit wordy. Anyone familiar with chart patterns - h&s, wedges, flags, triangles, trendlines will likely find nothing new in this book. Also, the explanations are a bit wordy .. though I suspect this was necessary when no one was familiar with it. I give it 3 stars for content and another for the fact that it was written in 1932. However, an advanced trader will find this book useless other than for sentimental curiosity.
Learn from the guy who taught Edwards and Magee.......2003-07-17
Finally available to the rest of the world, this classic is easily the best book on classical technical analysis available. Although it is more than 70 years old, the complete and descriptive discussions of how and why reversal and continuation patterns work are as valid now as they were then. Without Schabacker, there'd be no Edwards and Magee, Elliott, Murphy, or even Poser.
Chart reading, anyone?.......2001-12-12
So you want to learn on how to read charts... This is the one for you then! A little dense sometimes due to it's completeness on patterns, but it's all there, really. Won't teach you on how to make a trading system, but if you're into discretionery trading systems you'll love this one. I haven't found a reversal pattern that's not on these pages, and if you want to know about continuation patterns, they're all almost there too. I recommend this book for beginners as for experienced traders.
This is one of those books I keep next to my trading desk!
Technical Analysis' Pioneering Vision.......2001-11-09
Richard Schabacker, in this pioneering book, presents the art and science of technical analysis as an organized subject.
In 13 chapters, he discusses important reversal formations, minor reversal formations, major continuation formations, intermediate patterns and phenomena, trend line action, support and resistance levels, measuring rules and formations and trading tactics.
First published in 1932, the book gives equal weight to a formation's potential and its flaws and warts. Originally devised as a practical investment course, it still sparkles with application today. Despite today's modern computer methods of interpreting price and buying trends, an investor or trader must still master the basics and there is no finer place to begin than this former Forbes financial editor's ground-breaking work.
Gotta Start Somewhere.......2000-08-09
Very good and thorough. If you've had no technical analysis experience, this won't go over your head, and it won't bore you to death if you're somewhat familiar. Somewhat out of date in that it was written in the 30's, but the charts and formations it highlights are eerily valid, relevant, and applicable today as it was back then so you KNOW it's been time tested. Stocks don't chart any differently today than they did back then. Advanced technicians wouldn't like it...doesn't go into the "data" side of technical analysis as in ADX, MACD, RSI,...etc. But about a good a starting point as you're going to find. A great foundation builder.

Customer Reviews:
This thing works like nothing you've seen before!.......2007-07-27
To be fair I wrote this review too early! This product should have five stars! The more I use it the more I appreciate it. The tests will drive you nuts with their buzzer & 90% accuracy requirement but by God if you manage to get through that you'll know the material like the back of your hand! And you'll want 90% accuracy when it's your money at stake! Excellent reference tool as well. If you need to find something immediately and have it explained to you clearly this is the tool you'll turn to. I swear if you have to take a trip you may leave home without your Master Card but you will not leave home without your Intelyze!
Mac compatibility.......2007-07-19
I purchased this item with high hopes only to return it because it would not load on my mac powerbook. Is there a mac version available?
Thanks in advance for your input.
GREAT FOR STATERS, AND REVIEW FOR EXPERTS.......2007-06-08
LOVED IT!! I WENT TO A TEACH ME TO TRADE COURSE AND THAT'S WHERE I FOUND OUT ABOUT TA. TEACH ME TO TRADE WANTED US(ME AND MY FRIEND) TO TO PAY 39,000 SO WE COULD BECOME EXPERTS, 2 MUCH FOR ME. THIS IS A GREAT COURSE TO GET STARTED!!!
For Newbies & Dablers.......2007-03-30
I highly recommend this product for newbies and people who have been dabling and just can't get into the 500 page books on technical analysis. Its testing at the end of each section, helps reinforce the subject covered, and if you are honest with yourself, you will re-review the information until you get a passing grade.
excellent intro.......2007-01-09
this is truly exceptional, but this only introduces different tools, not how to use them to actually make a buy. For this, I am checking out TechniTrader which is about 6-7 times more expensive, but from all the reviews I have read (not available at Amazon) this seems like the real thing.
