5 out of 5 stars Here's what the critics say:.......1999-03-29

    From Variety:

This book is...for every 'movie bum' ... It's possible that no book ever gave its readers such an enthralling, enchanted journey down Memory Lane. Here are all our favorites from a more innocent (and more dramatically powerful) time--stars (Bette Davis to Spencer Tracy to Mae West), directors (Frank Capra to Preston Sturges), movies (Beau Geste to Maytime to The Grapes Of Wrath). Hundreds and hundreds of great scene stills (or so it seems). Plus Zinman's always excellent and highly personal I-loved-this-movie recap of the film...Even his footnotes are extraordinarily informative and valuable...At last, a man who really loves movies has had his say in print!

    From Don Robertson:

...Splendid...An intelligent, very personal, sensitively written catalog of delights--put together by a man who obviously loves movies and has the talent to communicate that love. I recommend it unreservedly. -- (Don Robertson,Cleveland Press)

    From Alan Rich:

... The choices are, on the whole, inspired. No static printed page...can evoke the quality of a moving image on the screen, but some come closer than others. David Zinman's 50 Classic Motion Pictures comes as close as any popular, art-book-sized movie survey I've yet seen. -- (Alan Rich, New York)

      Product Description

For everyone who ever shivered with fear when Frankenstein's hideous face flashed on the movie screen, or burst into laughter when Mae West told Cary Grant to "come up and see me sometime," here is a book to stir up vivid memories. David Zinman, a newspaperman and self-professed "movie bum," has brought together in this book completely cast listings, production details, incisive critical commentary, and many, many pictures of fifty great films from Hollywood's "Golden Age" - the 1930s and 1940s. Included are standards like Casablanca, King Kong, Gone With the Wind, Grand Hotel, Mutiny on the Bounty, and She Done Him Wrong, as well as lesser known but equally fascinating films such as She, Nightmare Alley, and the incredible Charlie Chan at the Opera. There are also lively and engaging chapters on directors Alfred Hitchcock, Frank Captra, Orson Welles, Preston Sturges, and the legendary Busby Berkely.

I had ordered this as a gift for my mother for her birthday. When it arrived, it was in perfect condition and my mother, a huge Cole Porter fan, absolutely adored it.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2005-08-02

The "Best of Cole Porter" far exceeded my expectations for beautiful music. The arrangements are complex enough for the advanced pianist, but also easily practiced by the beginner. The songs selected, are a delight.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift for any Cole Porter Fan.......2001-07-10

"The Best of Cole Porter" contains some of his best songs ever (in my opinion at least). The only thing that would make this item better is if it contained all of Mr. Porter's songs. For anyone not to familiar with Cole Porter, this book offers a great introduction to his music.

        4 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Cole Porter Lovers.......2000-08-20

If you love Cole Porter's music there is nothing better than this collection of songs. I've made use of every song. Each one of the pieces are from some of his best works. It's a nearly perfect combination of some of the greatest songs ever written. One minor disappointment is that it doesn't contain more, or that there isn't other volumes of the same book. Basically, if you need/want a collection of Porter's music there isn't any reason why you shouldn't have this book. :-).

"Making the Technical Sale" explains the overall technical sales cycle, including the technology and adaptation cycle and ways to understand the progress of a sale. This accurate and thorough manual was written from the technical sales professional's point of view and anticipates the kind of problems unique to the technical sales field. "Making the Technical Sale" discusses why technical sales is different from general sales; details the full range of skills needed by technical sales professionals; illuminates the typical tasks a technical sales professional handles; and explores the role this person plays on the sales team. The book also addresses the need for honesty and ethical behavior in sales.

                            4 out of 5 stars Worth reading.......2006-12-22

I have been a sales engineer (SE) for a major telecom equipment vendor selling to a billion dollar customer for about five years. I spent fifteen plus years deep within the development lab never really even seeing a customer let alone selling successfully to one. This book does a good job covering all the bases for SEs. I wish I had read it in the beginning of my career as an SE, and would recommend it to anyone who is an SE or considering becoming one. Even for very seasoned SEs, there are techniques in effectively speaking to the customer that would likely make the book well worth reviewing.

4 out of 5 stars Realistic & Practical Insights for Sales Reps & Marketers .......2006-07-06

If you are a new sales rep, you will find this book a realistic (if wordy) guide to the activities & challenges you will face in selling a technical product. If you are a marketer, you will learn more about the tasks, issues & roadblocks your sales reps deal with every day. Both types of readers will benefit from reading the chapter "Eight Challenging Prospects."

                            5 out of 5 stars Excellent Text.......2006-03-31

An excellent text for Sales Engineers, Product Managers, and related job titles. This book provides a good roadmap to help understand the key aspects of the technical sales process. A chapter on demonstrations offers some basics to help get organized for a new practitioner.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Salespeople.......2005-01-24

As a seasoned sales professional coming from a lightly technical background, I had hoped that this book (although targeted to technical folks in a light selling capacity) would provide some insight divergent from a traditional industry. As such, it completely missed the mark. Indeed, I am not sure that it would be well worth it for its intended audience. It is not at all useful in 'making' the technical sale in the least. However, it might serve a purpose for engineers and other technical types in understanding the business component of their respective industry. With some modification to the text, I would retitle the book, 'Why do sales and business people do that?'.

5 out of 5 stars Need to know how to be an SE???.......2004-06-07

I came to the "Sales Consultant" position from technical engineering background with no sales experience and have found this book very informative and helpful in my new carrier. If you are involved in pre-sales engineering, this book should accompany you as a resource wherever you go. This material is so valuable for sales consultants I quite honestly believe anyone who is in or thinking about getting into sales consulting should read this book!

5 out of 5 stars A Century of Dolls: Treasures from the Golden Age of Doll Making.......2005-11-20

What a splendid present this will make. First there is the absolute size, and superb quality of this book. It measures OVER a foot square; the photos are full plate almost 3D in sharp precision detail, and the binding is a premium sewn type. As for the subject this volume concentrates on ceramic dolls; so Barbie lovers look elsewhere! For those starting out in this marvelous hobby, the ceramic doll is one with those precise lifelike features, frequently of large size. They typically have soft bodies, and detailed ceramic faces, feet and hands. You'll love the pictures, they are really beautiful, and the costumes are incredible. Unfortunately they are generally above the normal family's toy budget, but truly I have recently seen some fine new ceramics recently for reasonable prices; would you believe the $12 to $20 range! i suspect if you know what to look for you can buy one or more of these and they may appreciate. Doll collecting of these real looking ceramics is best left to careful children like my 3, or adults. My kid's have dozens of these and actually play with them. They do not break them! Of course my girls have 100's of Barbies too, and these are given a bit rougher handling. I recommend storing them separately. The ceramics, while delicate, are just to beautiful to be ignored. This book goes back a 100 years to show the amazing range of expression and costume possible. The whole family will love this special one of a kind folio!

                            4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Photographs.......2003-09-14

I have owned this book for several years and still consider it a photographic treasure of antique dolls. With its golden cover of a blonde, antique doll, it has been a regular part of my Christmas decor since I purchased it. Each pair of pages has a charmingly set up photograph on one side, and a few paragraphs written about the doll on the other side. Some of the information is personal and some of it is about the type of doll shown, but it is all briefly written. It is a nice introduction for the beginner, but the experienced collector will find no new information. Buy this book for the wonderful photographs of a wide variety of antique dolls in well thought out displays because it is a photographic documentation, but don't buy it for the written information because there is little.

                            Book Description

The difference between a winning proposal and one that comes in second is only two to five points on a 100-point scale. Designed to narrow that gap, this book supplies all the tools needed to generate consistently successful proposals that elicit new clients and contracts and win over peers and senior management on a new project. The secret is in the authors' systematic, easy-to-understand method currently used to train hundreds of consultants at A.T. Kearney and KPMG Peat Marwick. It shows how to crystallize and develop key proposal messages and themes. And it uses an extensive selection of worksheets to help organize and sequence the key psychological decisions necessary to move the buyer-of the proposed service, product, or idea-from the current situation to the desired outcome.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall reference material.......2007-02-03

This book is similar to others on the topic so if you have one book on writing proposals then some of the information will be redundant but a good book to have in your reference library.

Overall an easy read and places the process in a logical progression.

                            5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-12-09

I had no idea how to write a business proposal. I followed this book to the tee...I now write major proposals for my company and my proposal kicked the ass of a couple of MBA's. There were a lot of red faces when I showed up my with version of a proposal. I essentially went from having no idea how to write a proposal to setting the bar on how to write a proposal, thanks to this excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars Like Eating Your Vegatables..........2003-07-23

This book is really good for you... just like eating your vegatables. Unfortunately, its not easily digested. This book provides a great method of preparing strategic proposals. The method is largely based on the Mento "Pyramid Principle" a book which is itself not an easy read (however, it is required reading at McKinsey, BCG, and other major strategy consulting firms. This fact should tell you instantly just how powerful a concept it is). However, if you're willing to hold your nose and chew slowly (I'm not willing to give up on the "eat your vegatables" analogy just yet), you and your proposals will be much more competitive. Since the book is far from an easy read, I'd suggest that you tackle it chapter-by-chapter with some time for rest and contemplation in between (divide it into "bite-sized" pieces, in other words). If you're looking for fast-food proposal fair, I'd like to suggest Robert Kantin's "Proposal Kit For Dummies" which, despite the title, is a terrific book on proposal writing for professionals -- particularly consultants. Overall grade: A-/B+.

5 out of 5 stars An Author Responds.......2003-05-23

Since my book is mentioned in a couple of these reviews, I thought I would respond.

I used Rich Freed's book for years in my consulting practice and MBA classes. It's a great book, and I *highly* recommend it. It's clearly one of the best treatments on writing business proposals available.

But comparing my book on proposals to Freed's is like comparing apples and oranges. My book is aimed at people who work in scientific and technical disciplines. Freed's book is written toward business applications. These two books are designed to work in two completely different arenas.

Buy this book. As an experienced proposal writer and consultant, I believe it's the best book on writing business proposals. It's truly innovative, and it offers wonderful strategies for winning contracts in highly competitive business environments.

                            5 out of 5 stars The 2nd Edition Rocks.......2003-05-10

The first edition of this books is, as the former editor of Consultants' News remarks, "The most comprehensive treatment we've seen," and the second edition is even better, including (for example) important discussions on fees and collaboration. Most important, this book is about far more than writing business proposals. David Maister-like in spirit, it's a superior treatment about how to sell professional services. Although it addresses business proposals, most of the content is important for writing other proposals as well, but like most successful books on proposal writing, it focuses on one of the sub-genres, unlike more general treatments (Johnson-Sheehan's comes to mind) that in their attempts to focus on all proposals, do a poor job of treating specific kinds.
