    Book Description

Ehon - or "picture books"- are part of an incomparable 1,200-year-old Japanese tradition. Created by artists and craftsmen, most ehon also feature essays, poems, or other texts written in beautiful, distinctive calligraphy. They are by nature collaborations: visual artists, calligraphers, writers, and designers join forces with papermakers, binders, block cutters, and printers. The books they create are strikingly beautiful, highly charged microcosms of deep feeling, sharp intensity, and extraordinary intelligence. In the elegant, richly illustrated Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan, renowned scholar Roger S. Keyes traces the history and evolution of these remarkable books through seventy key works, including many great rarities and unique masterpieces, from the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library, one of the foremost collections of Japanese illustrated books in the West.

The earliest ehon were made as religious offerings or talismans, but their great flowering began in the early modern period (1600-1868) and has continued, with new media and new styles and subjects, to the present. Shiohi no tsuto (Gifts of the Ebb Tide, 1789; often called The Shell Book) by Kitagawa Utamaro, one of the supreme achievements of the ehon tradition, is reproduced in full. Michimori (ca. 1604), a luxuriously produced libretto for a No play is also featured, as are Saito- Shu-ho's cheerful Kishi empu (Mr. Ginger's Book of Love, 1803), Kamisaka Sekka's brilliant Momoyogusa (Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, 1910), and many more.

Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan ends with ehon by some of the most innovative practitioners of the twentieth century. Among these are Chizu (The Map, 1965), Kawada Kikuji's profound photographic requiem for Hiroshima; Yoko Tawada's and Stephan Kohler's affecting Ein Gedicht für ein Buch (A Poem for a Book, 1996); and Vija Celmins's and Eliot Weinberger's Hoshi (The Stars, 2005).

The magnificent ehon tradition originated in Japan and developed there under very specific conditions, but it has long since burst its bounds, like any living tradition. Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan suggests that when artists meet readers in these contrived, protected, focused, sacred book "worlds," the possibilities for pleasure, insight, and inspiration are limitless.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, excellent scholarship.......2006-10-26

This superb publication accompanies a marvelous exhibition at The New York Public Library. This is a must-have book for anyone interested not only in Japanese art and illustration, but in great art in general. Professor Keyes has focused on material in the extraordinary Spencer Collection, but follows a different approach than previous curators and authors, covering material from the 8th century Buddhist "hidden books," through Utamaro, Hiroshige and lesser known masters right through to avant-garde artist's books of the 21st century. Japanese photography of the 20th century is also included and connects in fascinating ways to the greater body of Japanese Ehon. A wonderful gift book, but be sure to squirrel away a copy for yourself! And if you are within a 500 mile radius of New York City, run to see this show on display through early February, 2007.

    Book Description

During the late 1960s and 70s, a paradigm shift occurred within visual culture: photography and the moving image were absorbed into critical art practices. In particular, these mediums were used to record ephemeral or performative events and to render visible conceptual systems or to question the supposed objectivity of representation itself. This volume focuses primarily on artworks from the last decade and proposes that the extensive use of reproducible mediums in today's art has its roots in an earlier formative period. By the end of the 70s, many artists turned to photography as a vehicle through which to critique photographic representation and to subvert an art system premised on the notion of the original. While this practice came to define much of the 80s postmodern art, its legacy for the 90s was essentially the license to indulge in photographic fantasy, image construction, and cinematic narrative. Artists working today freely manipulate their representations of the empirical world or invent entirely new cosmologies. They process their subject matter through conceptual systems or use digital processes to alter their images. Some directly intervene in the environment, subtly shifting components of the found world and establishing their quiet presence in it; others fabricate entire architectural environments for the camera lens. This current state of the arts and its recent history are represented via more than 150 works by 55 artists, including Nam June Paik, Kara Walker, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Marina Abramovic, Vito Acconci, Ana Mendieta, Bruce Nauman, Robert Smithson, Christian Boltanski, Sophie Calle, Fischli & Weiss, Ann Hamilton, Robert Mapplethorpe, Annette Messager, Cindy Sherman, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Elger Esser, Andreas Gursky, Candida H fer, Thomas Ruff, J rge Sasse, Thomas Struth, Olafur Eliasson, Roni Horn, Gabriel Orozco, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Matthew Barney, Gregory Crewdson, Anna Gaskell, Sam Taylor-Wood, Oliver Boberg, James Casebere, Thomas Demand, Vanessa Beecroft, Wolfgang Tillmans, Patty Chang, Trisha Donnelly, Stan Douglas, Pierre Huyghe, William Kentridge, Steve McQueen, Shirin Neshat, John Pilson and Gillian Wearing.

4 out of 5 stars Essays & Photography Great, But Hard to Appreciate Videos.......2004-02-21

This book accompanies a 2003-2004 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. It begins with 30 pages of essays: "Introduction," "Picturing Movement, Past and Present," and "Art Photography after Photography." These essays do an excellent job of placing the exhibition in context. In addition, they mention works in a smaller 2002-2003 version of the exhibition in New York, which included some artists (e.g., Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik, and Robert Smithson) not represented in the Bilbao exhibition.

The body of the book ("Catalogue Entries") consists of text about and photographs or video stills by 50 artists in alphabetical order (Marina Abramovic through Jane and Louise Wilson). Each of the artists is given up to one page of text. For most of the artists there is only one page of images, but Francis Alys, Matthew Barney, Miles Coolidge, Gregory Crewdson, Rineke Dijkstra, Olafur Eliasson, Peter Fischli / David Weiss, Anna Gaskell, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Andreas Gursky, Ann Hamilton, Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Mariko Mori, Aika Noguchi, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Pipilotte Rist, Michal Rovner, Thomas Struth, Sam Taylor-Wood, Wolfgang Tillmans, and Kara Walker have at least three pages. Some works by Dijkstra, Gaskell, Goldin, Gursky, Anthony Hernandez, Manglano-Ovalle, Mori, Orozco, Rovner, Thomas Ruff, Taylor-Wood, and Tillmans are not reproduced in the book but were in the exhibition (per the list on pages 205-216). Virtually all of the works are dated 1990-2002; some images of Goldin's were taken in the 1970s and 1980s but were published later. For each artist, 2-4 "selected readings" are listed in the back of the book.

The photography is mostly great, but the book does not really do the videos justice for a couple reasons. First, there are not enough stills to give the reader a good idea of the course of each video. I would have preferred a larger number of smaller-sized stills. Second, the one-page-of-text limit for each video artist gives the same amount of space for the massive Cremaster series by Barney as for a three-minute video by Patty Chang. You'll have to travel to Spain to fully appreciate the videos, but meanwhile buy the book from Amazon.com!

    Book Description

This lavish catalogue presents 150 European paintings, pastels, and drawings from the late fifteenth to the mid-nineteenth century that have been given to the Metropolitan Museum by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wrightsman or are still held in Mrs. Wrightsman’s private collection. These notable works were collected over the past four decades, many of them with the Museum in mind; some were purchased by the Museum through the Wrightsman Fund.

Highlights of the book include masterpieces by Vermeer, El Greco, Rubens, Van Dyck, Georges de La Tour, Jacques-Louis David, and Caspar David Friedrich as well as numerous paintings by the eighteenth-century Venetian artists Canaletto, Guardi, and the Tiepolos, father and son, plus a dozen remarkable portrait drawings by Ingres. Each work is reproduced in color and is accompanied by a short essay.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top notch art book.......2005-10-02

As the publisher's description states, this book covers the paintings, pastels, and drawings associated with Mrs. Charles Wrightsman and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The reproductions are very good and each entry comes with a brief essay. Also included are the provenance and exhibition history of each work. The works already given to the Met have been reproduced in many of the museum's own publications and are perhaps the least interesting part of the book. The works in Mrs. Wrightsman's private collection have seldom been seen and are definitely the reason to buy this book. The highlights are the superb Ingres drawings. The Italian works by Canaletto and Tiepolo (father and son) are also wonderful. FYI, the jacket cover of the woman seated on a sofa is a pastel by Liotard. If you love European art history, this is definitely the type of book that you will keep for many years and go back to again and again.

      Book Description

From the jungles of Vietnam, where he shot a photo of "the loneliness and desolation of war" that won a Pulitzer Prize, to the impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, David Hume Kennerly witnessed and photographed most of the history-making moments of the last third of the twentieth century. As the millennium turned and he set out to cover his eighth presidential campaign, however, the veteran photojournalist sensed something missing. In his words, "I had the uneasy feeling that I couldn't focus only on the story at hand while bypassing the texture of life that surrounds it.... This time I wouldn't speed across that covered bridge to get to the big event on the other side, but instead I would slow down a bit, maybe even pause to take a picture of the bridge."

Photo du Jour is Kennerly's visual diary of "the texture of life" at the start of the twenty-first century. As he traveled more than a quarter of a million miles across thirty-eight states and seven countries, Kennerly took a picture every single day in the year 2000, using just one camera and one lens. Some offer candid, behind-the-scenes glimpses of the men who would be president—John McCain, Al Gore, and George W. Bush. Most of the photographs, though, seek to capture not the big, historic moments but rather the ordinary, even whimsical moments when the essence of a person or a place reveals itself to the observer who takes the time and has the heart to really see. Travel with him from Beijing to Boston, Moose to Miami, and Whynot to Weimea in Photo du Jour, and you'll quickly discover that David Kennerly is just such an observer.

2 out of 5 stars Photo edit of the day.......2007-02-17

Maybe my expectations are over the top, maybe I know more than the average joe/jane when it comes to photography, or maybe I just got the whole idea of this book wrong. Whatever the reason, David Hume Kennerly's Photo du Jour is nothing more than a document of his time and access throughout 2000. For some reason, I got the idea in my head that here was a photojournalist going to lug around an extra Leica and only shoot one image a day with it. How would he choose and at 11:59PM would there be regrets over the shot passed up for the possibility of another later in the day that never presented its self? I really wanted this guy to only have ten rolls of 135-36 for the project- I wanted this to be the photo equivalent to Zen in the Art of Archery. I obviously got it wrong. Another thing that gets me about this book is how it is promoted ie. Rosenthal saying "one camera and one lens". Again, all of the conceptual limitations on this project that never materialized! If you are shooting a 21mm on an M body, setting the hyper focal distance around 5ft. and using f8 you are basically good from 2ft to infinity. Fine, understandable and I love wide angles on 35mm format but then you go a crop the image!!!!! This is my biggest jab at the book, if you are going to say one camera, one lens be photographer enough to print the FULL FRAME! I guess if you spend you life getting paid to "get the shot", you learn to shoot it close and wide and then crop what you want later. Some images in this book look like 6x7, some 135-36, and some 6x9 or even a Panavision 16:9 so again, where is the skill/discipline? The fishing equivalent would be using dynamite. The book is what it is and unfortunately is billed as something else. Howard Fineman states in the introduction that this book shows Kennerly in an "uncharacteristic mode" and says this puts him "effortlessly" in league with the likes of Evans, Smith, and Robert Frank...........Please don't insult my intelligence or these photographers. The sophomoric juxtaposition on pages 142-143 is a Photo 1 shark jump that sounded like "badap bumb". Maybe all the text and praise from a Winogrand, Cartier-Bresson, or a Davidson book got mixed up with the images in this one. More hype than hypo. With all that said, the book is beautifully bound a put together. The reproductions are clear, well printed and maintain an elegance and crispness that is not out there in many books today. If you are interested in a slice of time kind of document and are just plain addicted to looking at images, then you should be happy with this book. If you are at all knowledgeable of the work of Winogrand, Cartier-Bresson, Davidson, Friedlander (there is a lame rip off on Like a One-Eyed Cat in du Jour page 156) or even Eggleston in a color version, you may be disappointed in the cost/benefit analysis as I was. I can't remember his exact words but Duane Michals said it best- (paraphrasing)- many photographers shoot hundreds of shots hoping, amidst all of the confusion, to come up with an interesting image...but the difference between the artist and the photographer, is a sense of control. I will keep this book, shelve it with a ton of Magnum issues, and I am sure pull it down once a year or so and flip though it because that's what I do. This could have been brilliant both conceptually and perceptually but end the end, just another guy with a camera and access.

      5 out of 5 stars Exquisite.......2002-11-24

This book is a must have. At the Texas Book Festival (2002) this book caught my eye. Never heard of the photographer before but the book was exquisite: filled with stunning black and white pictures. Pictures of everyday things. Of people laughing, of streets and events - capturing the magic moments without a pose. It was a simple concept: One camera. One lens. One year. The results are photos that also capture the routine, sometimes humorous and often extraordinary moments of everyday life.

                5 out of 5 stars A TSR attempt at a sci-fi role playing game.......2003-02-01

TSR was the grand-daddy of Role Playing Game companies. Best known for "Dungeons & Dragons," TSR actually developed many other games (some fine, others less than great), but none ever approached the popularity of D&D. Interestingly, TSR had much trouble coming up with a science fiction RPG, and wanted badly to emulate the success of the "Traveller" RPG at rival company GDW.

In 1990, they secured the license to the "Buck Rogers" franchise, and developed a game around it. The game never received a huge audience, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. In addition to game supplements, they published Buck Rogers novels, comics, and even a board game. (See my "Amazon List" of products) It's more Science Fantasy (like Star Wars) than Sci-Fi to my taste, but I sure admire the love and effort put into the game system.

The basic set as listed here should include the following books and accessories: "Characters & Combat," "The World Book," "The Technology Book," 4 maps, measuring device, 24 large cards, die-cut counters, and a ref's screen.

I owned a copy of this book when it came out in 1969 and sadly lost it somewhere along the decades since. I am so happy to find it again.
I agree with what the previous review has to say about the book; it certainly does give us insight into the social mindset of the times. Not only does Buck Rogers represent a compendium of social mores, it is worthy for the art and shows us a time line of changing artistic styles and conventions.
If you are a fan of social history, this is a grand addition to any eclectic collection.

4 out of 5 stars Social history through a cartoon strip.......2004-11-13

When you compare it to modern comics, the design, dialog and story lines of the Buck Rogers cartoon strip are very weak. You read phrases like, " Well - jest watch what I do t' Dual an' Namtac fer pullin' this little surprise trick." Therefore, to enjoy this collection, you must adopt the mindset of the times. They were drawn in the early thirties, so you also see some of the racism so rampant in the United States at that time.
The first section of the collection deals with the threat from the Mongols, a demonstration of the perceived threat from the Asiatic masses. The Mongols are brutal, bloodthirsty, deceitful and cowardly and the American forces are noble. This is a demonstration of what I liked best about the collection, in that it demonstrates some of the collective mindset in the United States at that time. It is easy to see why the Japanese-Americans were interned after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
The next section features a Martian attack on Earth. As was the case with the Mongols, the Martians are evil brutes who know only war and conquest. There is nothing about them that is redeeming or appealing. The cartoons are written for the masses, whose thoughts concerning aliens, whatever their point of origin, cannot see them as anything but barbarians.
To most people, Buck Rogers is science fiction, but to most readers of the genre, the cartoon is simplistic pulp and not science fiction. The themes are simple and the technology demonstrated in the strip is rendered without regard to the laws of physics. However, I enjoyed reading them, they were very popular in their time and high technology is still referred to as "Buck Rogers kind of stuff." The book is worth reading, but only if you accept the mindset of the time when they were created.

The perfect introduction on how to get in on today's hottest investment opportunity

Stock markets rise, and stock markets fall, but real estate is almost always a sure thing, especially in today's increasingly unpredictable investment climate. That's why more and more average Americans are becoming interested in pursuing real estate investing. How to Get Started in Real Estate Investing shows them how.

Writing for investors with little or no experience in real estate, bestselling real estate author Bob Irwin walks readers through all the ins and outs of real estate investing. In a friendly, reassuring, no-hype style, he fills them in on everything they need to know to start building a winning real estate investment strategy of their ownfrom how much money they'll need to get started, to how to find and evaluate properties, to the basics of financing and taxes. He delineates the seven major techniques used by successful real estate investors and provides guidelines for choosing and adapting the right one for individual readers' goals, personalities, and budgets.

                                4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-01-17

This is a book I find myself returning to time and time again. The insights are multi-dimensional; and every reading is a fresh experience. Contains a lot of insiteful information for the beginner investor mostly; but also for the experienced investor. I recommend this book.

                                4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Guide.......2007-01-07

Robert Irwin has written a good book on how to get started in real estate. His beginning story with Leslie, David, and Leo really simplify the thought process of investing. It was a great idea to use one's first residence as an investment property. This gives a fresh outlook on real estate investing. Now real estate could be purchased on 2 fronts. He gives good points to the beginner which seasoned investors may already know. Unfortunately he only scratches the surface of real estate without giving real world examples and numbers. All in all the tips and traps illustrations should serve as a good outline to all real estate investors.
He definitely followed the KISS (Keep it simple ...) acronym and it is a refreshing read.

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough survey of a great investment strategy.......2007-01-01

Irwin describes in excruciating detail how the steps to take to get started and maintain a real estate portfolio. Evidently, he's written 40 books and it makes sense because he's extremely knowledgeable. He goes into the ins and outs of looking for the right property and buying it with the help of "the right agent." He even describes what the "right agent" looks like: middle aged, honest, pleasant... Irwin writes about the tax benefits and the prospects for good tenants. There are some great tips throughout (he describes Fannie Mae and other real estate institutions and terms) but there's nothing too clever- all of the information is basic and straightforward (nothing clever like another book I just read ("How to Take Advantage..."by Morse). It's a great read, but if you're looking for inspiration to buy a house, look elsewhere like Bach's "Start Late Finish Rich" for women- this book doesn't say WHY you should buy a house.

My dad, Silas Baker, has always been my entrepreneur and financial inspiration.

In 1938, after marrying my mother, Lucille, on Christmas eve, with only the change in his pockets and a prayer on his lips, he left the red dirt cotton fields of Huntsville, Alabama and moved north to Nashville, Tennessee. He was 19 and my mother was only 17.

Dad had an uncanny ability to maintain his focus even when everyone around him lost his or hers. In more than 50 years as the Chief Executive Officer of his own companies, he never played hooky from work. Since I worked for him for 10 of those years, I often wished that he would say, "Don, lets forget about work today and go fishing." But, of course, he never did. Committed to his big family, he took his family obligations and business responsibilities seriously.

Facing hostile discrimination, violent competitors, few resources, many obligations and very little formal education, dad built one of the most successful construction firms in middle Tennessee.

This book, with hundred of pages of researched information, is about how to create wealth by persevering during difficult life moments, understanding basic financial concepts and the power of God.
