A fine volume of essays and interviews on Wenders. The first book to successfully compile a broad collection of interpretive essays on the different themes in his cinematic output. Equally fascinating for a reader are the essays written by Wenders himself, who comes across as insightful, articulate and intelligent. This book is an excellent introductory text to his work, but simultaneously provides plenty of material for those already familiar with Wenders oeuvre. This title comes highly recommended.

The Cinema of Wim Wenders is a new study of the films of this most prominent of German directors whose films include Kings of the Road; Paris, Texas; and Wings of Desire. The book analyzes a preoccupation central to all of Wenders' work and writings: why modern cinema, a recording art solely composed of sounds and images, has so naturally developed into a primarily narrative medium, a domain traditionally
associated with words and sentences. This book identifies and critically elucidates Wenders' chief artistic motivation: that the act of seeing can constitute a creative act in its own right.

decoding Bolero-style Afro-cuban music.......2006-02-05
As a fan of Afro-Cuban music, this book allows insight into the complexity of rhythms, chords and words. The content is as authentic as it can be to the material on its CD (not included). The print is good and easy to read. The music? Great!! I only with it includes pages on the production of BVSC, maybe photos of artists or footnotes.
Nice photographic support to the book, but..........2002-08-16
I am a fan of Wim Wenders' work, and I loved the BVSC CD and the movie, but in all honesty, except for the intro by Wenders and the closing interview with Ry Cooder, the entire book basically consists of shots from the movie along with the dialogs by the BVSC stars and the lyrics to the songs they interpret, i.e. material that the movie and the CD already provide. Yes: I admit I had higher expectations with it. In any case, I have to say Ibrahim Ferrer's monologue toward the end, when they visit NYC for their performance at Carnegie Hall, is a very touching moment.

I recently saw the movie Buena Vista Social Club for the first time and I liked it so much that I wanted to learn more about it. That's why I ordered this book.
At first, I was a little disappointed when I received the book and found out that some of the images were low-resolution digital scans. However, after reviewing the book as a whole, I really got to like it. There are quite a few large high-resolution images that more than compensate for their low-res counterparts.
The book is mainly a photo-album which includes the transcriptions of some of the dialogs and interviews from the movie, as well as the lyrics of some of the songs (all of them translated into English).
One of the only pieces of material in this book that are not an integral part of the movie is the foreword by Wim Wenders, where he describes his whole experience of going to Cuba to make the movie. Very, very interesting to read! The other two are an interview of Ry Cooder with Peter Kemper and the biographies of the musicians.
This book is good to have around when you are having a conversation about the movie with your friends. You'll find the photos and dialogs from all the key moments in the movie.
A "must" for BVSC fans and Cuban music enthusiasts!.......2000-08-04
Buena Vista Social Club is more a coffee table addition than a serious in-depth study, but will prove a 'must' for any prior fan of the Buena Vista Social Club and Cuban music in particular. Photos, film stills and text accompany first-person capsule sketches by the participants of the BVSC group in this companion book to the film.

I am fairly new to the Wenders world, his school of life and wings. The movie and the book are beautiful. Cinematoraphy/photography tightened into the form of a man's luminescent imagination.

An Excellent Introduction to Wenders.......2005-03-10
After seeing WINGS OF DESIRE, I became a big Wim Wenders fan. Back then, in the early 90's, before the internet and before Amazon, I had to rely on my local library to find out what I could.
Luckily, they carried this book, FROM PARIS FRANCE TO PARIS TEXAS. This is an excellent introduction to Wenders and his films. It describes his life and his films, from his early short films up until he went into production on WINGS (the credits are listed in the book, but it was written before its release). At the time I read it, I was unable to find any of his films, so her descriptions were the next best thing. Having seen his films now, she did each of the films justice.
Geiste doesn't go overboard analyzing each film, she just gives a basic overview of each film, what they are about, how it plays on certain recurring themes in Wenders work. There are also many photos from the films listed.
There have been many books written about Wenders since. This still stands as one of my favorites. An excellent introduction to his work.
It unfortunately appears to be out of print. Be careful when buying from online sellers as there are a couple different "The Cinema of Wim Wenders" books released. Make sure it is the "From Paris France to Paris Texas" version. I've had the incorrect book shipped to me in the past and finally was able to get the right one only recently from an Amazon seller, 15 years after first reading it.

Fine Introduction to the world of Cryptic Crosswords.......2002-01-10
The author indicates how the typical cryptic clue is comprised. There is a definition portion and a wordplay portion. He then goes on to describe the different kinds of wordplays normally used in clueing. Each chapter describes one kind of wordplay. At the end of each chapter, there is a mini crossword that employs that particular wordplay and there are sometimes more exercises based on the wordplays covered so far. The end of the book contains full-sized and increasingly complex crosswords which are a pleasure to solve after the entire book has been read.
The style of writing is very simple and easy to understand also. If you ever wanted to get introduced to cryptic crosswords, there isn't a better alternative than to pick up a copy of this book and get cracking...

Awesome Study Guide.......2006-08-16
I found this book to be the best study guide I have ever used. If you need the textbook for a class you should purchase this study guide. It includes short 1-2 page chapter summaries of every chapter which really help cut down the study time. It also includes chapter quizes and pre-tests with answers so you will certainly be prepared for any test. If used properly you don't need the actual textbook! I got an A in Micro and I credit it entirely to this study guide.
disappointed.......2005-10-04
the book was listed as being new when it was not. Had quite a bit of the answers in the guide and it was the earlier edition, which was not the intended book I wanted to purchase. Very disappointed with my purchase.
