Essential for the film buff........1997-08-19
From the 1890's to the present, in over 35,000
entries, the author has included virtually everyone
who has ever appeared in a film shown in North America.
The entries are necessarily brief, but include the
birthplace and date of birth, birth name and place
of residence for the living, age and date of death
for the deceased, screen credits, and Academy Awards
and nominations.
Of particular interest are the asides and comments
by the author, a Daily Variety reporter for many
years, on people he has known personally. His
affections are warm and obviously genuine, and if
some relatively minor players are given greater
space than more famous others, the author may be
forgiven.
This work will find a permanent place on the
bookshelf of film students, fans, and old-movie buffs
everywhere. Highly recommended.

Inside great Cover not so great........2007-01-16
I bought this as a Christmas present so was very disappointed to find though advertised as new the cover looked like something had been dropped on it. It was scuffed badly. I didn't have time to return it for exchange and the person who received it "said" it was okay I was upset. If something says new it should look new.

This is the finest universal organ method I have come across to date. I believe it is intended tfor the beginner or intermediate student. All aspects of playing the instrument are covered, with a focus on church service work and the issues dealing with that job.
I recommend it highly.
A Well-rounded introduction to organ.......2006-02-25
This book was suggested to me by a fellow organist, who recommended it highly. I was an accomplished pianist looking to begin studying some basics of organ playing, and I was not disappointed. Davis' book offers a very basic approach to learning to play the organ, from attack and release, to pedal excercises, and over 100 graded classical compositions. Most valuable to me, however, is the long section on phrasing and articulation and the appendix on the organ itself and hymn-playing.
The only complaint I had was that it was very similar to the method of organ playing by Gleason. This book would be perfectly complimented by a competent teacher and Nilson's excellent pedal excercises.
helpful for beginning or advanced organist.......2005-10-03
I just began organ lessons a few months ago with this book, and I find it very helpful. It has good exercises for manuals alone, as well as pedal exercises. The second half of the book includes compositions that are for manuals alone, and ones with pedal. They are pieces that one can learn and keep in one's repertoire. I highly recommend this book to any beginning or experienced organist.
Davis vs. Gleason.......2004-01-23
I have studied organ at the undergraduate and graduate levels at several music universities. I hold a BS in music education and a graduate certificate in church music. The organist's manual by Davis is, in my opinion, far superior to the Gleason Method. All technical exercises and selection of repertoire is more interesting. I understand the organ much better after using the Davis book. I own all of the Gleason methods, but I find myself using and playing from the Davis book more. I congratulate Mr. Davis on this fabulous instruction manual. Will there be a second edition??? I hope so.

I received this crossword dictionary last week & I am very disappointed in this book. It doesn't have all the words and it did not help my crossword puzzles at all. The letter are very large which helps my eyes.

More of an introduction than a handbook.......2006-01-10
OK as a starter, for someone who knows zero about media, but falls short of the mark for anyone who is a practitioner in a media-related industry. The first 100 pages are spent on "context" which might be helpful for readers who know nothing about marketing either (Ms. Katz feels it necessary to tell us what the 4Ps are...), but this leaves very little for anyone who actually needs to DO media buying, planning or research.
The Media Handbook a Handy Reference to Media Planning.......2003-06-19
Helen Katz' The Media Handbook is an easy to follow guide which will help a wide range of marketing/advertising students and practicioners gain a basic understanding of the media planning process. I feel comfortable making this observation as a former media planning executive at DDB Chicago advertising agency and now as instructor teaching two media planning courses at Loyola University Chicago.
This book begins with chapters on "What is Media" and "Media in the Marketing Context" then moves through the steps of the media planning process before it concludes with chapters on media buying and media plan evaluation/accountability. It provides a good overview of media planning yet spares the reader exhaustive explanations of media terminology and media math calculations found in may college media textbooks.
Author Katz has authored this 3rd Edition to stay current with the rapidly changing media environment. To a reasonable extent, she has succeeded although today's digital media technology changes are occuring at such a breakneck pace that any media textbook is somewhat out of date a week after it has been written.
A broad cross section of the marketing/advertising community will find The Media Handbook to be a useful reference source in understanding the role of media planning in the marketing communications process.
