4 out of 5 stars Best book on Classic American "adult" Western films.......2006-01-05

If you are not a big fan of spaghetti westerns, of juvenile "b" westerns of the Roy Rogers/Hopalong Cassidy variety and westerns made after the seventies, but instead are a fan of American "Adult" Westerns made from the late thirties to the early seventies, then this is the best reference/critical guide book I have come across.
I can not begin to count the number of times over the past twenty years I have picked up this book, I may not agree 100% with the authors comment's but I have never found a anyone else writing on film who comes closer to my own views, and I think the same would be true of most fans of the American "adult" western.
The book may be almost 25 years old, but that is no problem. Because how many films have people like
Ben Johnson, Randolph Scott, John Wayne, Glen Ford, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Slim Pickens, Lee Van Cleef,Fred MacMurray and Audie Murphy made in the years since?

3 out of 5 stars Should read: "A Grouchy Guy's Guide to Westerns".......2005-07-03

For a book that reportedly took over ten years of Brian Garfield's life, WESTERN FILMS: A COMPLETE GUIDE reads with the joie de vive of a sniper. Garfied, the author of DEATH WISH and HOPSCOTCH, has constructed this volume twofold: first with an opinionated overview of the genre delienated by time periods, directors, actors, etc., followed by capsule reviews of over 1500 "A-list" Westerns. Granted, the scope and breath of information alone makes this book worthy of any movie buff's bookshelf , but beware, Garfied has axes to grind and uses his book more as a warring tank than a friendly tour bus.

Garfied is a purist who favors Westerns from a earlier period of time- Westerns that do not stay too far from their mythic and literary roots. He hates, in no particular order, "Spaghetti Westerns," the auteur theory, (auteur fave Howard Hawks is a repeated target) self-consious artiness, and ulimately, much produced after the Kennedy assination (save for THE WILD BUNCH which Garfield repeatedly considers a masterpiece but exhibits all the characteristics of Vietnam era Westerns that Garfied supposedly despises. Go figure.). Garfield also turns a blind eye to "B-Westerns." Oaters starring the likes of Roy Rodgers and Gene Autry are mostly a "trite trife," and best left for other "historians, stunt-action fans and nostalgic programmer-buffs." Whether you agree with him or not, Garfied ultimately bleeds the fun out of Westerns and offers a world without an interesting thing to say about Clint Eastwood, Sergio Leone, RIO BRAVO, or the attributes of, say, Hopalong Cassidy. It's a world that I'll visit from time to time, but one that I quickly vanish on the noon time stagecoach.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Writing!.......2002-07-08

WOW! This is a seriously smoking guide/critique of Western films.Mr. Garfield is an excellent writer; his choice of wording and sentence structure is outstanding. He lavishes praise where he thinks it's worthy and mercilessly belts out the criticism when he feels he honestly has no other choice. Check out his hilarious review of the infamous "Heaven's Gate." Mr. Garfield's not a big fan of the spaghetti Westerns, but so what. Hey, I kinda enjoy some aspects of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (like the music), but, let's face it, it is -- as Garfield rightly notes -- a bit of a slow-moving, overlong bore (ha, ha). Anyway, Mr. Garfield can't be too bad, he gives a halfway decent review of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" -- one of my personal faves; plus he's a fan of one of the funnest Westerns, "North to Alaska" (the scene with the love-stuck teen Fabian stuck in a wilderness cabin with the beauteous Capucine is hilarious!!)You folks that gave his book a bad rating need to chill out; let the man have his (brutally fun) opinion! Highly recommended for anyone who loves Westerns or anyone who desires to improve their vocabulary & writing skills.

3 out of 5 stars Uneven.......2001-02-01

While this is a very thorough guide in some ways, the author's clear distaste for the modern western makes it less than authoritative. He doesn't even try to understand the spaghetti western or any of Eastwood's directorial efforts. This caveat aside, the material that IS here is worthwhile and interesting. It's a good resource and overview. A little more balance would have made it great. .

4 out of 5 stars Strong opinions on westerns.......2000-04-17

Though I did not agree with many of the reviews I found them enjoyable. I also share his views on spaghetti westerns. (They are hit on your face). Being an author himself he of course emphasizes the role of a writer. That is good. Garfield does not like B westerns. If you like them, do not read this. Enjoy and disagaree!

From 1947 through 1963, the merged studios of Universal and International produced mostly highly entertaining westerns that ranged from classics like Winchester '73 to forgettable films better left unmade. Entries on the 114 Universal-International westerns of the period are collected here. While other films may have contained western elements, only films that truly fit the genre are included. Films are arranged alphabetically by title, and each entry includes release date, alternate title, cast, credits, songs, location of filming, source if the film was an adaptation, running time, plot synopsis, commentary from the author and from the actors and directors, and representative excerpts from contemporary reviews. Also included are tag lines used in the original advertising for each film. An introduction to the book provides details on the Universal-International merger and a history of the studios' productions.

Wild Bill Elliott was a major western star for over 15 years. Known, and proclaimed by himself and others as a "peaceable" man, his screen persona met evil head-on and emerged victorious. Elliott's gunplay and unusual style of fisticuffs brought cheers from millions of Saturday audiences. From 1940 through 1954, Elliott was listed as a top moneymaking western star in the Motion Picture Herald poll of exhibitors and the Boxoffice magazine poll from 1945 through 1953.

This comprehensive study of Wild Bill Elliott covers his entire career as a western star. It begins with a biographical sketch of Elliott and then discusses each of his 78 starring roles as well as his more than 130 supporting roles. The discussions include studio, release date, alternate titles, cast and credit listings, songs, location filming, color, running time, source, story synopsis, notes and commentary, reviews and summation of the film. Appendices include Elliott's short films, TV and radio appearances and comic books.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, opinionated reviews.......2005-07-26

I enjoyed Garfield's comments though I often disagreed with him. I do enjoy some lesser B-films of the fifties and are not nearly so critical in my evaluations than G. Originally my ideas obout Italian westerns were just like G's, but I have relented somewhat. I do not include them among the best westerns, however. It is also right to notice the importance of writers and not always honor actors and directors. That is the major bias of G which I do not mind. This is not for spaghetti lovers, but others surely enjoy it. Garfield can write very fluently.

2 out of 5 stars Just Read My Review and Pass This Worthless Piece of Hunk !!.......1998-09-12

When I ordered this book, my aim was to have a good reference book on the western film genre, as well as reading some commentary from a knowledgable author. But, to my great disappointment, I found a highly biased book, full of shallow anaylsis. Mr.Garfield shows his one-sided approach in many parts of this book. I do not believe that his comments should be taken seriously at all. While in principle we must all respect to each other's views, his insults to some films, and film makers are not tolerable at all. For example, read his comments on Sergio Leone's westerns and you know what I mean. At page 164 he goes on saying the following on "For A Few Dollars More": "...it's the least palatable of the three. But it goes on forever. The score unhappilly is inferior to other Ennio Morricone composition. Massimo Dalamano's Technicolor photography gives the film, like Leone's other spaghetti oaters, some odd pictorial effects-slaughter, gore, cruel silhouttes..." Take a look at how he finishes his incompetent comments on one of the most interesting westerns of all times, "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly": "Like the Dollars movies this one is simpleminded and absurd; it's also long, slow and boring." Now, how can you take such a guy seriously. He was openly disrespectful to one of the greatest film makers of all times. I guess, more than just a film reviewer, he conveys his inferiority complex and jealoucy feelings through such lines. The only part I found this book makes any use its list of films more than many books I have seen. If you made the mistake of buying this book, either burn it, or just look at the castings, and pictures without reading any of his crappy comments. He surely understands nothing on the film making process. I would be ashamed if I was a son of this guy to know that my father wrote all those worthless piece of lines. The cinema police must prison him in lifetime treatment at Almeria open penitentiary, and force him to watch 500plus spaghetti westerns even in his sleep.

Power being the ultimate goal of many a character, this book is the DM's guide on managing a Dark Sun character at levels beyond 20. It gives a close look at the movers and shakers of Athas and how to become one yourself. I never leave home without it

5 out of 5 stars Really Cool Book.......1999-06-25

This has all the rules for high-level Dark-Sun campaigns, as well as a ton of info on the powers of Dragons. Introduces and details the concept of Avangions, the Preserver equivalent to a Dragon, and 10th level spells (which you won't find in the Wizards Spell Compendiums). After the 2nd edition boxed set for Dark Sun, this is the second Dark Sun book I'd get . . . that is if it were still in print :(

5 out of 5 stars The most original campaign setting EVER!!!.......1998-02-27

This is a campaign setting that takes everything you know about fantasy, and changes it a whole lot. Giving you something that is such a totally new experence it cannot be described. Anybody who is getting tired of going to the tavern, slaying the dragons, and fighting the drow, should check this one out. Also try to get the original campaign setting than the remake, the original is far better!

                    5 out of 5 stars Players Perspective.......2002-05-05

I have only played in one DarkSun world, and the campaign was short to say the least. I own the original boxed set and read it for fun. It is wonderful, I am dismayed however that I forced to visit used bookstores and garage sales to find new (old) material to read. This world is not for the hack and slash players, and it is not for those who want to gain as much power as they can as quickly as they can. Athas is a harsh place suitable to be played in only by those that truly enjoy "roleplaying".

5 out of 5 stars Dark Sun is for the toughest breed........2000-12-09

As a veterine of AD&D I can say that Dark Sun is truly original and represents new challenges and general style off roleplaying. Be warned however that Dark Sun is harsh, and that if you find your self running around in plate-male armor and are armed to the teeth with magic or steel weapons then your DM is doing the wrong thing.Athas (the world of Dark Sun) has scarcely any metal, has an over supply of deadly psionic monsters, and is home to evil sorcerer kings, and a handful of unique races. I have been playing for over 4years real time and, have owned but one magic weapon which was promptly taken from me. These situations are great to get an adventure started as players will do anything to get steel or magic weapons back. I hope that me review has convinced you the reader to pursue a Dark Sun Campaigne believe me you wont regret it. Signed: The Wanderer

5 out of 5 stars Dark Sun Rulessssssssss!.......1999-06-22

I think if the Dark Sun world is been discontinued it's because people aren't playing it so much. Let's buy and play Dark Sun and TSR will see that it's the BEST AD&D Campaign Setting, and it doesn't need any acessories or something because it's a complete and savage world, perfect only for the strongest player!

4 out of 5 stars Big Job for great future, but there wasnt continue........1999-04-21

This word is great, presents a new view of the game (not the typical Tolkien medieval word). The set includes a great information well presented, accesories, maps, and the best for me was the suplement 'The way of the Psioniscist', where all psionic matter is arranged, great if u like playing Psionics(to any campaing); and the goal for the adventures is great: Save and change the world. The problem is that now Dark Sun is discontinued, and only some adventures, settings and accesories appeared after this; well if u think u are great DM, and want something different than a group of heros hacking, slashing and solving quests, here you found Dark Sun.

Book arrived fast. It was new as I bought new. How-ever book did not go into detail of the amount to charge customers for services rendered. It could have advised at least how to go about that. One of the main things a person needs to know when starting their own business. I rate the book a 50 out of 100.

This book should be targeted towards those who have no idea where to get started and are just tossing around ideas. Don't be under the impression that you'll run your business with this book.

I don't know what is up with the Entrepreneur-magazine series of books, but I've read several of them now and I've yet to be impressed with any of them. The best way to describe this book...BLAND AND FULL OF FLUFF. Most of them are apparently written by people who have NO real-world business experience. They are not recommended.

                        1 out of 5 stars A scam on would-be window washers.......1998-07-07

This book has little to do with starting a window washing business. The book is only is general guide to forming a business plan and an introduction to basic management principles. However, the only references to window washing could be easily replaced with references to any other business. I suspect that the authors have the book in a word processor and run a "search and replace" for window washing to write How to Start and Manage a Sausage Factory, or How to Start and Manage a Bio Tech Research Facility.

To give credit where it is due, the book is a good primer to those who need to learn how to develop a business plan. However, there is no information specifically related to where to locate window washing supplies, what advertising is most effective, seasonal changes to be expected, etc. The book's title is purposefully misleading and I think that prospective purchasers should be informed of that fact.

                          Book Description

Complete, detailed information to guide users in planning, organizing, starting, marketing, and managing a dog waste removal service. Distilled from the author's own 10 years of actual successful experience as founder of PET BUTLER Dog Waste Removal Service in Columbus, Ohio. Matthew Osborn started in 1988, with startup costs of $150 and worked available hours between 2 full-time jobs. Over the next 10 years the business grew to serve over 650 customers every week, with revenues over $20,000 per month, seven employees including a full-time manager, and a fleet of six trucks. With publicity about the unusual business came many inquiries from all over the world. This manual is Matthew's response to that popular demand for more information from people who are interested in starting their own business in this unlikely, but lucrative, occupation.
