5 out of 5 stars GREATEST BOOK EVER WRITTEN ON SILENTS.......1999-02-07

Every major film historian and scholar concurs that THE MOVIES IN THE AGE OF INNOCENCE is the greatest book ever written on silent films. None of us younger historians can ever hope to come close to the quality achieved by this great man. As far as I'm concerned, his word is law as far as movie history is concerned. Mr. Wagenknecht turns 99 this March on the 28th, and is recovering very nicely at his home from the bad spell he went through October through January. We owe a tremendous debt to this great man.

Book Description

This film reference covers 646 silent motion pictures, starting with Eadweard Muybridge's initial motion photography experiments in 1877 and even including The Taxi Dancer (1996). Among the genres included are classics, dramas, Westerns, light comedies, documentaries and even poorly produced early pornography. Masterpieces such as Joan the Woman (1916), Intolerance (1916) and Faust (1926) can be found, as well as rare titles that have not received critical attention since their original releases.

Each entry provides the most complete credits possible, a full description, critical commentary, and an evaluation of the film's unique place in motion picture history. Birth dates, death dates, and other facts are provided for the directors and players where available, with a selection of photographs of those individuals. The work is thoroughly indexed.

Sadly, Robert Klepper died in 2000, at the age of 32. A very nice fellow and an important film historian. Do pick up this worthwhile book, and mourn the fact that there will be no more from him.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!!.......2003-10-10

I bought this book last year and love it and use it all the time. I get films from libraries all over the country and look up the movies that come in. I bring it with me if I am going somewhere that I will be awhile and read each review. It has a permanent place on my coffee table. If you love silent films, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Back-story to the silents...........2003-06-30

I have owned "Silent Films, 1877-1996" for two years, and use it as a constant reference. (If you are a fan of TCM "Silent Sunday" or are a fan of silent movies and would like a guide to watching or purchasing silent film, this is the first reference to which I turn.) This does not cover absolutely every silent film, but there have been very few which I did not find information upon here. "Silent Films" also covers actors, directors, and other cinematographical information. The price tag is high, but for the silent movie buff it is indeed worth the price. I journal my silent movie viewings on its pages to keep a record. "Silent Films, 1877-1996" has gone from investment to treasure.

5 out of 5 stars labor of love.......2003-06-24

Robert Klepper has a remarkable love and knowledge of silent film. His understanding of the historical place of any movie he reviews is impressive and thoughtful. The book is a standing resource for any film enthusiast. In watching these films some of our favorite practices are to look for scenes that more modern films either steal (or pay omage to - depending on your thinking) and to pay attention to stunts that no actor or actress will ever have to duplicate in a more advanced film age. These are things that Robert Klepper also makes notice of and shares with his readers. I find his rating system to be reliable to my own standards and his humor to be very welcome - though I think some readers might miss some of it.

I do cherish this particular book and guard it heavily - no one is permited to borrow it. (I am usually pretty generous with my shelves.)

I assure you that the book is well worth the price -it is an excellent resource to the novice or the expert.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2002-03-21

This is the best index of silent film that I've ever seen. The reviews are bold independent and informative, if not always completely objective, Mr. Klepper is not afraid to have an opinion. This is a reference that I keep going back to.

As a child, Charlie Chaplin was awed and inspired by the sight of the glamorous vaudeville stars passing by his home, and from then on he never lost his ambition to become an actor. Chaplins film career as the Little Tramp adored by the whole world is the stuff of legend, but this frank autobiography shows another side: his childhood of grinding poverty in the south London slums and early debut on the music hall stage, his lucky break in America, the struggle to maintain artistic control over his work, the string of failed marriages, and eventual exile from Hollywood after persecution for his left-wing politics and personal scandals. My Autobiography is an evocative and compelling account of one of the twentieth centurys most remarkable lives. Tells so much about this curious, difficult man ... a wonderfully vivid imagination The New York Times

But this is no CLASSIC MOVIE COMEDIANS. And it can't hold a small candle to Brownlow's THE PARADE'S GONE BY... either. However, if you are a fan of silent movies you may enjoy some of the coshured information about classics, but this is a turgid and flawed effort.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for an intro on this subject.......2001-07-27

Frank Thompson does a good job of informing the reader about films that have disappeared and forgotten by history. The synopisis and stills from the lost films give the reader a good idea of these forgotten stories, but Thompson has an annoying habit of going on and on at the end of each synopsis about how sad it is that this film is lost, etc. You feel like saying "OKAY-WE GET THE POINT! LET'S MOVE ON!" Fortunately, since this book was published, one reel has been found of Annteete kellerman's "The Daughter of the Gods." Half of "The Flaming Frontier" has been found in France, and a couple of feet of Theda Bara's "Cleopatra" has been donated to the George Eastman archive. So all is NOT lost.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Book On a Bygone Era.......2000-06-11

There are many books about important films, but this book is unusual in that it discusses films that are now lost because of decay or intentional destruction by the studios. The focus in this book is on the silent era, where as many as 80 percent of the films made are now lost. Some of the important films discussed are THE PATRIOT, DAUGHTER OF THE GODS, CLEOPATRA (1916), DAMAGED GOODS, and THE MIRACLE MAN. Thompson focuses on key actors and filmmakers of the era, especially those whose work is mostly unavailable today including Theda Bara, Raymond Griffith, Thomas Meighan, George Loane Tucker, and J. Gordon Edwards.

I refer to this book again and again, as I am very interested in early Hollywood. As noted in the other reviews, this book is not complete, and a number of important films are not listed. However, this book is well-written and provides readers with a cautionary tale of how important it is that films be preserved.

4 out of 5 stars New Book Profiles Important Lost Films.......1999-02-28

Very good book, one of the most important of the decade. Segments on DAUGHTER OF THE GODS (1916) and THE CASE OF LENA SMITH (1929) especially interesting. Did miss some key films - namely ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1919) with Mary Miles Minter and HUMAN WRECKAGE (1923), Mrs. Wallace Reid's first production effort.

5 out of 5 stars This book was really fantastic!.......1998-08-24

The best thing about this book, I find, is not just the telling of the plots of these lost films. It's the message that comes across to the reader to help preserve our film heritage. There is a sadness in seeing these important films lost, and yet there is also a ray of hope that someday they might become found.

        Book Description

"Went to the movies. Wept. Matchless entertainment." So wrote Franz Kafka in one of his diaries, giving us but one hint of his little-known passion for the cinema. Until now, Kafka aficionados have been left to speculate about which films moved Kafka so powerfully and how those films might have influenced his writing. With Kafka Goes to the Movies, German actor and film director Hanns Zischler draws on years of detective work to provide the first account of Kafka's moviegoing life.

Since many of Kafka's visits to the cinema occurred during bachelor trips with Max Brod, Zischler's research took him not only to Kafka's native Prague but to film archives in Munich, Milan, and Paris. Matching Kafka's cinematic references to reviews and stills from daily papers, Zischler hunted down rare films in collections all across Europe. A labor of love, then, by a true man of the cinema, Kafka Goes to the Movies brims with discoveries about the pioneering years of European film. With a wealth of illustrations, including reproductions of movie posters and other rare materials, Zischler opens a fascinating window onto movies that have been long forgotten or assumed lost.

But the real highlights of the book are those about Kafka himself. Long considered one of the most enigmatic figures in literature, the Kafka that emerges in this work is strikingly human. Kafka Goes to the Movies offers an absorbing look at a witty, passionate, and indulgently curious writer, one who discovered and used the cinema as a place of enjoyment and escape, as a medium for the ambivalent encounter with modern life, and as a filter for the changing world around him.

        Book Description

Shakespeare is now enjoying perhaps his most glorious--certainly his most popular--filmic incarnation. Indeed, the Bard has been splashed across the big screen to great effect in recent adaptations of Hamlet, Henry V, Othello, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, Richard II, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and of course in the hugely successful Shakespeare in Love. Unlike previous studies of Shakespeare's cinematic history, Shakespeare in the Movies proceeds chronologically, in the order that plays were written, allowing the reader to trace the development of Shakespeare as an author--and an auteur--and to see how the changing cultural climate of the Elizabethans flowered into film centuries later. Prolific film writer Douglas Brode provides historical background, production details, contemporary critical reactions, and his own incisive analysis, covering everything from the acting of Marlon Brando, Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, and Gwyneth Paltrow, to the direction of Orson Welles, Kenneth Branagh, and others. Brode also considers the many films which, though not strict adaptations, contain significant Shakespearean content, such as West Side Story and Kurosawa's Ran and Throne of Blood. Nor does Brode ignore the ignoble treatment the master has sometimes received. We learn, for instance, that the 1929 version of The Taming of the Shrew (which featured the eyebrow-raising writing credit: "By William Shakespeare, with additional dialogue by Sam Taylor"), opens not so trippingly on the tongue--PETRUCHIO: "Howdy Kate." KATE: "Katherine to you, mug." For anyone wishing to cast a backward glance over the poet's film career and to better understand his current big-screen popularity, Shakespeare in the Movies is a delightful and definitive guide.

Always entertaining, Brode once again shows his vast knowledge of the subject at hand, providing commonly know facts with delicious little tidbits that the lay person may not know, but needs to know.

This book is so bad, Amazon needs to come up with a NO STAR option. There are a stunning number of factual errors. Literally dozens, maybe into three digits. The author's grasp of the material is always superficial. I can't imagine a worse book on this subject. I know this sounds like hyperbole. It is not.

        1 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor.......2000-08-25

Read the review in the Spring 2000 issue of The Shakespeare Newsletter before purchasing this book. The review begins, "Briefly, this is so dreadfully bad a book that it, quite literally, ought to be withdrawn from publication" (18); the review amply substantiates this judgment in several thousand words quoting and describing the egregious errors in this book.

          Book Description

In the silent era, American cinema was defined by two separate and parallel industries, with white and black companies producing films for their respective, segregated audiences. Jane Gaines's highly anticipated new book reconsiders the race films of this era with an ambitious historical and theoretical agenda.

Fire and Desire offers a penetrating look at the black independent film movement during the silent period. Gaines traces the profound influence that D. W. Griffith's racist epic The Birth of a Nation exerted on black filmmakers such as Oscar Micheaux, the director of the newly recovered Within Our Gates. Beginning with What Happened in the Tunnel, a movie that played with race and sex taboos by featuring the first interracial kiss in film, Gaines also explores the cinematic constitution of self and other through surprise encounters: James Baldwin sees himself in the face of Bette Davis, family resemblance is read in Richard S. Robert's portrait of an interracial family, and black film pioneer George P. Johnson looks back on Micheaux.

Given the impossibility of purity and the co-implication of white and black, Fire and Desire ultimately questions the category of "race movies" itself.

Adult games for G, PG, or R-rated parties, guaranteed to turn everybody on.

Looky, Touchy, Feely Party Games is a book of 40 seductive party games to spice up your next social gathering with action, laughter, and a touch of titillation. The games start out conservative and progressively become more adventuresome and risqué. The first chapter describes 11 spirited games which the stiffest prude would play. This chapter is even appropriate for children. One may begin a party with one or two of these to break the ice and to reassure the self-conscious.

The second chapter continues with 14 more physical and stimulating games. While appearing to be engaged in a serious contest, the players are thrust into hilarious and sometimes suggestive bodily contact. One may introduce several of these racy-but-tasteful games midway in the party to melt the ice and tease the imaginations of the self-conscious.

The third chapter sweeps the players into 15 increasingly erotic games. As the sexual implications of the games become more obvious, the self-conscious (if there are any left by this time) will either run for their lives or will be carried into the steaming frolic to have the time of their lives. Still, none of the games in this book are so bold that your guests will find themselves in hot water the next morning.

There are some people who don't like to play games. And there are some people who don't have any friends to launch a party with. If you're such a person, you can also enjoy this book to merely read and fantasize. Just thinking about some of these games will turn you on.

IF IT'S RAINING IN BRAZIL, BUY STARBUCKS

The hardcover edition of If It's Raining in Brazil, Buy Starbucks first introduced investors to "macrotrading." Instead of just theorizing, the breakthrough investing strategy actually quantifies the impact of global economic forces on specific sectors of the stock market. This paperback edition delivers macrotrading to a new and wider audience, identifying which economic indicators are essential to follow, how to trade profitably in times of recession or inflation, subtle signals that indicate imminent turning points in the market, and much more.

Global financial markets are part of a much larger world, a world of fluid government policies, political unrest, and other unpredictable forces. If It's Raining in Brazil, Buy Starbucks quantifies how far-reaching factors affect stock prices, and how investors can trade more effectively by understanding the links between these forces and the stock market. It focuses on specific macroeconomic forces and which sectors of the economy react to different indicators, providing investors and traders with clear signals on whether to buy, sell, or sit on the sidelines. Unlike more targeted investing titles, Peter Navarro's insightful book contains benefits for all investorsfrom day traders to long-term, buy-and-hold investors. Simulations and analyses, along with real-life examples and case studies, provide inside details on: How to profit from specific technological change Strategies to trade effectively in times of recession or inflation Which economic indicators to followand why

              5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-06-18

I like this book because the author uses a funny style. Thus, it is easy to remember some typical phenomenas in macroeconomics and stock markets. Of course, you have to read books about forecasting stock market movements very very very carefully. But this is the story about a young naive boy who go for an internship in an investment bank and listen to sucess stories of the experienced collegues - They are never talking about loss reports!

As you see I am from Germany. Therefore I can tell you: Some of Mr Navarro's causal relationships cannot work in Germany. Actually, I have read the book and made notes: This might work in the US and that might happen in Germany (or maybe in another economic zone somewhere, which i know about). The difference have a little bit to do with cultural differences but more important are differences in institutional and political systems. For example the ECB don't care about what will happen to the unemployment rate in particular Euro-countries during particular election years because it is not possible to consider all member-states equally.

But I think to have read some comments of Mr Navarro that everybody have to think on its own, and thus, find their own magical "macrowave" relationships what have a pretty simple reason: If everybody does the same, the magic doesn't work anymore... I really think to remember that he have indicated something like this in the first chapter.

Therefore, dear reader, this is a very good book because it explains that macroeconomics is linked to the financial markets although some "smart" people postulate that it is not the case anymore. It depends on the viewpoint. and Mr Navarro explains, maybe not very very very academically, that there is one wave level most people don't want to see anymore. While I have read the book I skimmed through the stock market news und macroeconomic data (of Germany / Europe) of the last years and compared them to several stocks and stock indicies - It is not exactly what Mr Navarro have written but in principal he is right.

1 out of 5 stars Good Story book but not practical.......2005-11-14

Today is Nov 14th 2005, Tyson food reported it quartely profit surged to 49 percent, as operating income surged in its chicken and pork businesses also because of record corn production last year and this year, there is ample supply (inventory) of corn that should benefit Tyson food further as it can buy corn at cheap prices.
But... stock declined by 6% in the premarket trading. Reason..."Market is effecient". There are thousand of analysts who analyze these information and incorporate them in their stock price estimate. If result surpasses expection, stock price will rise else it will fall.

5 out of 5 stars Just about the best stock investing book I ever read........2005-08-28

This book gives you different scenarios as to what can happen to the stock, currency and bond markets with every economic report that comes out. Be sure you dont get overwhelmed by all of this and perhaps focus mainly on the 3 and 4 star data that comes out for a while. I am a semi-professional stock speculator myself, and even I was overwhelmed at how much info he gives. I will surely have to keep this one on my shelf for constant reference.

He gives many entertaining samples of how real speculators would act on news and economic data. The funny thing is, many fundamental and technical analysts pay too little attention to this data, and some pay it too much heed. So you need to find the balance. I will say this; I always found economic data very boring until Peter showed us they are all pieces of a puzzle and that makes it very, very interesting indeed. I will never look at CNBC the same way again. As well, the resource guide for websites and news sources at the back of the book are worth the price of this book itself! (...)Marc

              4 out of 5 stars Dangerous.......2005-02-24

...because it's seductively written, and is liable to give readers unwarranted confidence in their ability to speculate/gamble (a distiction without a difference if there ever was one). The book is filled with entertaining fictionalized case-histories of people who both ignore and practice "macrowave investing." Problem is, of course, it's not as easy to play chess while everyone else is playing checkers as Navarro makes out. Case in point: throughout 2003, after March 12, he was calling market tops week after week, dissing the rally, eagerly adding to his short positions. Have no idea when he finally covered.
Investing is about a lot more than interpreting news alerts. When a major computer virus breaks out, it will occur to a lot of people to buy Symantec. It's awfully hard to get in first, even if you have time to sit in front of the computer all day, while glued to CNBC. And you'll be wrong half the time even if you do react instantaneously, because too many other things are contributing to a stock's valuation. From bitter experience, I've come to conclude that the best you can do is to respond to the over-reactions of Wall St. But then you have to know the companies you're buying, and there's zilch here on analyzing and evaluating businesses.
Though ostensibly written for all kinds of investors, the book is, of course, all about momentum trading--riding trends. For people who want to do this, _If It's Raining_ probably covers the basics as well as any book. He even throws in a glib and inaccurate account of the history of economic thought in the 20th century. The coverage of the business cycle and the introduction to the economic indicators is a lot better. Hence the 4 stars. But if this book fires your enthusiasm for "macrowave investing," do some paper trades for a few months first. Better still, take a look at the archives of Navarro's old columns from his website, if he's kept them.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for investors.......2007-02-10

The other reviews do a good job of summarizing the strengths and weaknesses of this book so I won't rehash them here. However I will say that this book is useful for more than just investors. For example, have you ever wondered what the implications were of:
              - interest rate changes?
              - currency, foreign exchange values?
              - economic reports on: labour productivity, job creation, housing starts, trade balances, etc.?
              - significant market news such as: droughts, flooding, unseasonally warm weather, wars, etc.?

Anyone that receives/reviews economics reports will benefit from reading this book as a quick primer or refresher on interpreting market or economic data and quickly arriving at it's implications.

5 out of 5 stars Good info, arguable presentation .......2006-01-26

Reading first few chapter was a little disappointing. The authro keeps using examples like Janet is a good girl, she studied macroeconomics and she made a killing trade and bought a boat; Joe doesn't learn economics, he made a trade and lost a lot of money - these are not literal quotes, but you've got the idea. This oversimplified approach is a sort of annoying.

But by the end of the book, I have to admit, it has plenty of useful information. Basically if you want to make an investment, in order to understand the internal state of the company, you should read the balance, income and cash flow statements. But it's also important to see the big picture and understand the macro environment that company operates in. There are plenty of reports available and this book teaches you how to find and read that information. The book roughly covers college level (but it's written in plain english with almost no formulas or graphs), so unless you're a proffesional economist or investor, it will probably open your eyes on some aspects of how the US economy works, how it is being monitored and regulated.

Sometimes that book gives an impression, that ability to read reports can be easily converted into profitable trades, but if you get that impression, it's probably wrong. It's hard to be a successul investor if you can't see the big picture of what is going on. But the ability to read reports will not nessesary make you a good investor. So don't expect to discover an easy way to get rich.

Overall, the author was trying to explain some really important and valuable mocroeconomics topics in a simple way. And the book does contain a lot of it. But the style could be a little more serious to my taste.

3 out of 5 stars Some good information, bad structure.......2005-07-31

This book has some good information on money supply, various views on economic stimulation, margins affected by commodity prices and more. The problem with the book though is a big one: the author is literally all over the place. His thoughts are not structured enough to make an argument in a compelling rational way. He consistently says things that sound like "you too can make money, here's how!". Then he contradicts himself by claiming that others discount the event-risk based news that he spends so much time talking about in the book.

This book is unorganized, but has some interesting information, although you really need to get through his tiring writing style and structure in order to get to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great investment book from a macro perspective.......2005-04-21

I've read an extensive number of investment books on everything from day trading to futures to options to system trading, etc. This book takes a macroeconomic view of the market and is one I hadn't put too much emphasis on in my trading style. The more I read the book, the more I liked it and found its ideas logical and practical. It is not a "Holy Grail" book but is one that has expanded my knowledge envelope by also considering a macro view and has helped me trade more intelligently. The book describes how external events effect the market and how to take advantage of them. Events such as earnings reports, fed reports, climate events, etc. that definitely do effect on the market. The author tells how to trade in specific ETF's or stocks to take advantage of these events as well as other signifigant things like sector rotation. All in all, a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Quite a good and interesting book for beginners.......2003-06-09

I have always been skeptical of trading or investment books with very "marketing" titles. Quite to my surprise, this book really delivers what it's title promises, that it can really be taken as a "guide" to profit from news and other market-moving events.

In fact, this is a book of fundamental/macro-economics analysis. Distinguishing itself from others, it is full of lively and vivid examples that readers can easily put the propositions into practice, with little modification, though the result is not guaranteed in this increasingly competitive market. Nevertheless, the if X, buy 1 and if Y, sell 2 approach can really speed up the learning curve of nearly all beginners.

One drawback: Although the author did mention the many "traps" in the market, the tone of these warnings was too light compared to the rosy pictures painted by the author himself on the effectiveness of his approach. As I mentioned before, there are more and more traps nowadays with the increasing employment of derivatives by professional traders. I think that the author should elaborate more on this respect.

Anyway, worth the price and the time.
