At just 191 pages Arlene Croce's FRED ASTAIRE & GINGER ROGERS BOOK is a gem. This is a classic work from the 1970'
Lots of fun, lots of information.......2001-05-15
The Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers Book is both entertaining and informative. Croce provides insightful commentary on the two stars' careers, their films, and individual dances to compliment the delightful pictures throughout the book. The top corners of the pages can even be used as a flip book so you can see a sample of Fred and Ginger dancing. This book has a wealth of information and is fabulous for anyone interested in the history of dance on film.

The Japanese are bombing Guadalcanal, Montgomery squares off against Rommel in North Africa, and in Hollywood, Toby Peters fights his own private war. Real estate prince and ex-mob king Arthur Forbes, a.k.a. Fingers Intaglia, wants dancing lessons for Luna Martin, his vainglorious, lead-footed moll, and he wants America's most famous tap shoes to teach her. Fred Astaire wants Toby to get Forbes and the alarmingly loose Luna off his back--and every other part of his anatomy. In a case choreographed for trouble, Toby will hoof it with Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth in front of several thousand witnesses--while desperately trying to unmask a fast-stepping killer, stop Astaire from waltzing into a pair of cement galoshes, and keep his own flat feet from doing a Last Tango in Tinseltown.
Customer Reviews:
A NEW TOBY PETERS FAN!.......2000-06-13
I found this book and series while doing an auction "online" search for movie star memorabilia. Typing in "Rita Hayworth" and "Betty Grable" brought up a list of all kinds of "goodies," among them a book called, "Dancing In The Dark." The auction write-up mentioned that Toby Peters, a 1940's Los Angeles Private Investigator for the stars, hoofs it onstage with these two Hollywood lovelies after taking dancing lessons from Fred Astaire. Well, that hooked me, so I bought this book! What a hoot! Toby is modeled after such classic hard-boiled gumshoes as Sam Spade & Philip Marlowe, but he has a heart of gold and his narratives are witty and funny. Fred Astaire turns out to be a "crime aficionado' and sounds like, uh - Fred Astaire! Mr. Kaminsky does such a marvelous job of bringing Astarie to life that you feel like you are "watching" him in the movies! The action takes place in 1943 during WW II and the descriptions of the place and times are very authentic and interesting. Any fan of the old "classic" movies of the 1940's will thoroughly enjoy this book - and the Toby Peters series!

Disappointing.......2006-06-06
for astaire fans who already own a number of books on him, it becomes apparent that some writers are so pro- ginger rogers that no other astaire partner can compare. that does not help the astaire fan who loves ALL of fred's work-- over 30 musicals total.
mueller is one of these writers. he trashes every celebrated post-rogers partnership...rita hayworth, eleanor powell, cyd charisse. he thoroughly trashes both leslie caron's and audrey hepburn's dancing abilities. he likes joan leslie and jane powell because they are similar to ginger... he feels astaire's work with vera-ellen is his "most creative" and very best work, then trashes fred & cyd's legendary 'girl hunt ballet' from "the bandwagon".
in short, whatever most film historians/critics have lauded as important, pivotal partnerships & films in astaire's career have been totally discounted by this writer. and that's a shame because there are astaire fans out here that feel his post-rogers musicals were just as incredible, entertaining, and important, and that astaire throughout his career was a master.
this ia a huge book that is well researched, but filled with mueller's opinions throughout. one must remember this book's opinions are not held by most critics, and take them with a grain of salt...unfortunately, the facts and meuller's opinion are all mixed in together... you will have to pick your way through them.
you should be able to read a book, savor the information, and make your own conclusions.
a far more entertaining, objective, and journalistic type of book would be "Starring Fred Astaire" by stanley green. this is the best astaire book i've ever read.
The Best Astaire Book.......2000-04-13
Probably the best book on Fred Astaire's career, this has everything, including frame-by-frame analyses of each of his dances. Mueller is obviously a fan, and sometimes finds things to praise in films that are actually pretty dull ("The Sky's the Limit," "Belle of New York"). But unlike most movie books, this one is fully thought-out, beautifully written, and just about exhaustive. Even the footnotes and appendices make entertaining reading.

Old adversaries.......2007-05-13
This is good jor the experieced D.M. to find those creatures that have yet to be reincarnated int the newest versions of the D&D system.
Clarifications of my review below..........2000-01-16
The Monstrous Compendium Annuals are basically digests of all the best creatures in that year's adventures and magazines. In this way, the appendices can be seen as expansions for the MM, unless you plan to buy every single adventure TSR produces. One of the largest problems with the appendices is the fact that they frequently re-release creatures from books that are still in print, but with revised statistics, causing major havoc and confusion. Also, it appears that these books were not proofread at all, as the text in several places resorts to a jumble of senseless words stringed together with no punctuation, making hard it under- reading you stand what are.
Below are the separate ratings for each volume of the appendices:
1st - published in 1994, contains creatures of 1993. The only appendix with a white cover, also the largest. This little guy contains monsters in the very same format as the Monsteous Manual, which is very relaxing. Most of the monsters are interesting and a large part are actually useful in day-to-day campaigning. Highlights include the new Linnorm dragons and the low-level outerplanar creatures. Five stars.
2nd - Released in 1995, contains 1994 materials. in this volume the creatures aren't framed but sprawl around the pages in a variety of places and positions. Although this could cause some wprd-wrap problems like in the Planescape MC's, it doesn't seem to do it too much. Nevertheless, a change from the routine is not all too bad. Most of the monsters are vibrant and colorful, but lighter than the ones in #1 ( perhaps because Tony DiTerlizzi is not the artist, but does that make such a big difference! ). I enjoyed the Chronolily, but the centaur sub-species are rip-offs. Four stars.
3rd - released either in 1996 or 1997, contains monsters of '95, '96 ( or at least I think so). I don't own this one, so I can't tell you too much. It seems though, that TSR skipped a year somewhere.
4th - TSR is cleaning up its case. Released in 1998, contains 1997 materials. Many old creatures making a comeback. Art is extremely beautiful, and the fact that it is done by a variety of artists only swwetens the candy. Finally TSR agreed to publish the sources of the creatures in the book. This is the last one in print.
Basically, this is where you turn for creatures after you exhausted the MM. If you think you can bypass the spelling and the syntax problems, you will enjoy these.
Incredible!.......1999-12-19
As far as I am concerned, this is one of the best "monster books" in existense in the AD&D game. The art is fresh and vibrant ( unlike the washed-out art of Planescape appendixes), the creatures are creative and each and every one of them is capable of having an entire adventure centered on it and it alone. A few things - the spelling is horrible; the binding is simple glue spread - the book falls apart easily with time; also, the text isn't as enchanting as it used to be...
This is one of the best, and I consider it a near must-have.
Great art, interesting creatures, horrible editting.......1999-07-21
Yes, the artwork is really great in this book, but while the book does have an editor listed, I am not sure anything more than a spell check was performed.
There are TONS of instances where typos got by the spell check because they resulted in real words that were inappropriate to the current context. Maybe it's just me, but typos like this detract from the professionalism of a book.
Unfortunately this seems to be par-for-the-course for TSR lately.
Great Monsters for AD&D.......1998-07-16
I think that all of the monsters were very well thought out and designed, the artwork is 10 times better than the crumy artwork in the Monsterous Manual. Five Stars!

I've seen better/.......2000-10-01
Okay even this had been the worst of the lot I still would've bought it but thats because im obssesed with collecting every singel compendium. For those of you who arent this book is not neccessairly a must have. Id say the two good parts which stick out are the Wereshark and the Brine dragon. The art
compared to annual 1 and some of the monsters are pretty stupid too, two words: Centaur Kin. Basically they stuck demihumans on horse bodies, any DM who knows the first thing about monster creation could've done that, if you need a compendium buy annual 1 or 3 which are infinetly better.
Well Thought.......2000-04-11
I first think that these additional volumes of monsters are really a great help. Often times in the old compendium I find myself not being able to find a "new" encounter for the players to deal with. Witht the annual compendiums I find more and more encounters that can add great fun. For example I find that the new types of dragons, golems, and lycanthropes add surprise to the game. My players often know how to deal with anything I throw at them so the new monsters in this book challenge them more and create more fun.

Book Description
Written in response to the stock market crash of the 1970's-and completely updated for today's equally volatile market-this bestselling classic reveals Robert Lichello's revolutionary AIM formula for earning profits in stocks and mutual funds.
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting and Highly Readable - Best for Conservative Investors.......2007-01-03
The formulas set forth in the book are very helpful and the book is easy to read. It is a good value for the money. I think the formulas would work well for a very conservative investor. The book also includes a formula for making periodic investments in mutual funds. I backtested the book's approach over the last ten years using the mutual funds in my 401(k) which are offered by American Funds. For most periods, the results were better for the book's approach than simple dollar cost averaging. Because the market is presently up significantly, the dollar cost average approach is currently ahead but the book's approach will be better if the market turns down.
The best investment book you can read.......2006-12-27
After reading "How to Make $1,000,000 in the Stock Market Automatically" I put the system to use with a simulation portfolio from [...] using the $1,000,000 you get when signed up. The first year my portfolio returned 21% and after three years I am looking at a 10% average annual return. This is definetely the best investing book you can read. It takes the emotions of investing out of the equation, and if you have even the slightest bit of knowledge, or know nothing, about the market or investing, this book will show you a way to make money without putting forth too much effort. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in investing for themselves instead of trusting those crook money-managers to do it for them and not showing any return.
AIM is Outsanding!.......2006-11-27
I've tried real money trades on dozens of
stocks using AIM. The profits were exceptional,
some reaching more than 300% in a six month period.
After spending 2 years testing literally hundreds of
trading systems using real money, I have now gone
back to AIM. It's definitely the best.
So enthused by Lichello's work, I created a new
algorithm based on AIM which is easier to use and
increases profits by 266% but maintains the same
level of safety. I have now gone on to use it with
more volatile, higher margin investment vehicles with
results beyond my wildest dreams.
Thank you, Mr. Lichello. You have changed my life
forever.
Lichello's AIM comes of age in the era of tax-deferred investing.......2006-10-19
Now that we've entered an era where vast portions of the public are involved with stock ownership through mutual funds held in tax-deferred accounts this money management system looks better and works better than it may have for ownership of individual stocks in taxable brokerage accounts. The new mutual fund investors are making the mistake of not raking in profit as they go, losing opportunities for better long-term yields, and this classic method can solve that problem.
The legions of AIM students have discovered over time some of the defects in Lichello's original AIM formulas, such as holding on to too many shares as share prices appreciate in the stratospheric ranges of 200+%, but the beauty of applying his classic system to nontaxable mutual fund investing is that it doesn't matter as much--the built-in diversification of funds, the free switching factor, and the long-term view of retirement accounts cushion against most systemic distortions or market downturns while using this method.
The clever investor may soon realize that there are simpler ways of applying progressions to decision-making about how to harvest upside profits or do downtrend buying, but to novice investors classic AIM in its 3 flavors works very well indeed for the new retirement accounts.
For ideas on how to use Lichello's AIM-like thinking with payroll deduction in addition to the TWINVEST described in this book, consult his other work on SYNCHROVEST.
Simple system just as good.......2005-12-11
