I find this book the worst place to start when wanting to read about art and video culture.

Apart from not being particulalry insightful about video and art, whether it is because it was written such a long time ago, the author gives long, tedious accounts of the history of art, music, and film in the 20th century, and doesn't really tackle the issue of the impact of video media on art and culture.

By using photography as a storytelling medium, the cinematographer plays a key role in translating a screenplay into images and capturing the director's vision of a film. This volume presents in-depth interviews with 13 prominent cinematographers, who discuss their careers and the art and craft of feature film cinematography. The interviewees--who represent the spectrum of big-budget Hollywood and low-budget independent filmmaking from the sixties through the nineties--talk about their responsibilities, including lighting, camera movement, equipment, cinematic grammar, lenses, film stocks, interpreting the script, the budget and schedule, and the psychological effect of images. Each interview is preceded by a short biography and a selected filmography, which provide the background for a detailed analysis of the photographic style and technique of many highly acclaimed and seminal films.

Great book..very informative....well put together.............1999-05-19

I highly recommend this fine book. The author's roots can be traced back to Camp Willoway. I can still remember his early films that he showed to us campers. One that still sticks out in my mind is where you see a guy who is being followed/stalked and he is desperately trying to get away. From who you ask ?.....the camera....it was quite clever. Though the author was not my counselor, he was a kind, thoughtful , creative guy whose films left an impression that still remains. Best of luck!

Book Description

Beyond Orpheus is a study of the elements of musical structure and the ways they provide unity, coherence and uniqueness in classic-romantic music. The book rests in part upon Arnold Schoenberg's concept of Grundgestalt, or Basic Shape, as the singular germinal source from which all aspects of a musical work arise. Though Schoeberg based his philosophy of composition upon this idea, he discussed it explicitly in his writings only minimally.

Beyond Orpheus clarifies and illuminates the concept, drawing from the writings of Schoenberg and those of his circle. It traces the development of the concept from the music of Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, and others, through the ultimate extension of certain of its systematic principles in twelve-tone music and total serialism. In the light of this continuous line of thought from the Viennese classics through the present, the question is asked whether aspects of total serialism are themselves found in classical music. In other words, do works of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries arise from basic shapes that influence their structure not only with regard to thematic unities of pitch and rhythm, but also with regard to harmonies, tonal plans, and secondary qualities of phrasing, inflection, articulations, dynamics, timbres -- in short, in their total compositional and structural character?

The author concludes that they do, to a much greater degree than is generally recognized. He marshals extensive examples and analyses literature to demonstrate the point. The question of norms arises in this discussion, particularly those standard norms of harmony, tonal plan, metric and rhythmic placement, and conventional formal procedures that largely mold classic-romantic music.

The author shows that shapes intrinsic to individual works provide a structural rationale for the seeming anomalies at times found in the musical behavior of these works, for their departure, that is, from the norms of convention, create their own norms and extend them to many parameters: it is these intrinsic norms that provide the unique character of the works, and special bases for their coherence and unity.

The author's conclusions are illustrated and illuminated by the numerous excerpts from scores by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Schoenberg, and other composers.

This is one of the best books I have read on sales - it covers all the main areas in a very readable and simple way. It is broken into 24 lessons - each of them covered in their own chapter. The book is about 160 pages allowing for an easy read.
This book will be one of our core books to be read and studied by our sales people for the future.

Loyal fan says.. it's good, but it's a bit basic........2003-02-14

I look up to Tom Hopkins greatly. He encouraged me to think of sales as a true profession, and to become great at it. Therefore, I buy whatever he releases, and usually find it of immense value. Not this.

I don't want to sound like the pessimistic 'Jack' in the book, but this is a very short book. I sat down and read it in two hours. It reinforced a lot of points raised in his other books, but didn't teach anything new. It sticks to the very basic areas of qualification and closing, and doesn't add anything to what Tom has already put out.

However, it is written in an extremely easy to read way. It's a fun book to read, even if you know the material! I really enjoyed reading this book, even though I learnt nothing new. And I can see how this book will be absolutely amazing for people who aren't familiar with the techniques of true Master salespeople.

So it gets five stars for being easy to read, and wonderful for beginners. But it loses a star for being mostly irrelevant to more experienced readers, although it's good reinforcement for what you've already learnt.

Sorry, Tom, but this is the least useful 'sales training' purchase I've made in a long time, but not the least enjoyable. But it's so [inexpensive] so I'm not too concerned.

Save Your $.......2003-02-12

This book offers nothing new to any sales person who has read a sales book or two. If this is the first book you have considered reading about sales, it might be worth the price. Otherwise, save your money! You work too hard for it.
