Book Description
Best known as the basis for the classic film starring Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster, and soon to be a major Broadway play, Sweet Smell of Success is a dark and gripping novella about media manipulation and the will to get ahead--by any means necessary. Lehman scathingly depicts the dark side of success through the twisted relationship of Sid Wallace, an ambitious publicist, and Harvey Hunsucker, a powerful and vindictive gossip columnist, fashioned after Walter Winchell. As scandals are manufactured and reputations ruined for sport, the story spirals downward toward one last, savage act of revenge. As brutally honest as Nathanael West's The Day of the Locust, Sweet Smell of Success is one of the most enduring and provocative stories in the literature of show business.
This collection of the long out of print fiction of Ernest Lehman also includes the novella The Comedian, a scathing portrait of the sordid private life of a famous funnyman. The book is rounded out by a series of off-beat and brilliant tales about Broadway and the big time that ruthlessly dissect the world behind the bright lights and happy endings.
Customer Reviews:
Great writing remains in style forever.......2000-06-13
If you are too young to have read SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS when it first came out, be sure to grab this re-issue. Then go re-rent the movie. A perfect way to spend a weekend.
Mr. Lehman may be best known for writing some of the greatest screenplays ever, from the original Sabrina, through West Side Story and North by Northwest, and of course, the film version of SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS.
The stories in this book remain as fresh, powerful and intriguing as they did 40 years ago. It's certainly a "must read" for those interested in the history of stage and screen. I remember distinctly several years ago haunting many dusty used book stores to find these stories. How terrific it is to have them together again!

Book Description
Growing up on the thriving plantation called The Meadows, Lillian Booth cherishes the brightest, happiest dreams....
Lillian's world is full of grand parties, of sunshine and promises, as thrilling as the fairy tales Mama spins for her and her little sister, Eugenia. No one, not even her cold, stern Papa and her Bible spouting sister Emily, can crush her spirits -- until the day Emily reveals the shattering secret at Lillian's birth, a secret Mama sadly cannot deny. Still Lillian refuses to believe Emily's hateful claim that she is evil, a curse...even when sweet, gentle Eugenia loses her fragile hold on life, and Mama retreats further into her fantasies. But when tragedy befalls her best friend, the one boy whose tender heart mirrors her own, Lillian comes to believe Emily's grim words. Meekly, she endures her penance, finding a strange solace in the endless repetition of prayers in a room stripped of all comforts. Lillian's heart is torn anew when, in a drunken haze, Papa subjects her to the most brutal degradation. Then Papa loses The Meadows in a card game, and Lillian is faced with a new and terrifying prospect. Arrogant, handsome playboy Bill Cutler will return the plantation -- if Lillian will marry him! Now Lillian must leave her girlhood home behind, and make a bold new beginning as the mistress of a hotel called Cutler's Cove...
Customer Reviews:
It was okay when I was fourteen, but..........2005-08-07
then I grew up and dug out my Andrews books after they'd been sitting in my closet for a time. I reread this morbid tale one night as I tried to fall asleep. At first it entertained me. But having parted ways with these stories for years, I realized that it was the same spark that got people to read books like Mommie Dearest or Flowers in the Attic. People love to be shocked. And this is a book with nothing but horrible things befalling our 'beautiful' heroine with no bright light ahead of her. It seems that all of the good guys in VCA books are beautiful and most of the bad guys are ugly. And did I mention the rape scenes were absolutely disgusting?
I rest my case...
an idea.......2005-06-20
I would love to read a story written from Charlotte's point of view. Sure, Darkest Hour was prteey good, but it does not explain why Charlotte was afraid of Lillian. Maybe the Cutler series needs her to tell her story, about how Emily treated her.
sad story of a lovely lady.......2005-05-09
Darkes Hour, was the first novel I read in the Cutler series. I decided to read this book, since the fifth book is usually the PREQUEL. Lillian grew up in a privelaged home with a big house and magnolias everywhere. Yet she still has to deal with her adultering uncle/dad (who rapes her), her spineless mom and evil sister/cousin Emily. She becomes a total victim and prisoner in her home.
Then at 16, she is betted off to womanizer Bill Cutler, and becomes the matron of Cutler's Cove. She falls in love with the hotel, and becomes a big success.
I thought Lillian was going to be a kind and loving grandmother in the first novel, Dawn. However she ends up being Grandmother Cutler, a cold frigid bitch who make Dawn miserable.
An Evil Granny's Story.......2005-05-08
Well, here we come to the last book about the Cutlers, and it's told by the evil granny. Who, as is the tradition in V.C. Andrews books, was not quite so evil in her youth, so she has a right to narrate a story.
Actually, this is a little weird. If you've read the previous books in this series, you'll probably know that the evil granny (or Lilian, as she is called here), isn't actually related to Dawn or Christie. Or is she? Because this is the prequel, and we've already found out a lot of shocking secrets about who's related to who in the last four books. Is it possible that there could be one last, horrible secret that would change the way the readers look at, say, Dawn and Jimmy's marriage? Well?
As it turns out, no. The only horrible secret revealed that wasn't mentioned in the other books is something to do with Lilian's parentage. Which doesn't really impact on anything that happened in the other books. Erm.
But there's always an advantage to these "narrated by the evil granny" books, and that is the fact that they're set in the past, so there's an excuse for the prudery and daffyness. It would sound a bit strange for a modern-day mother to tell her daughter that only "loose women" like to show off their cleavage, but in a 1930s (I'm guessing) mother, it makes sense. As do the swoony-true love-fairy tale parts. They should set these books in the past more often- they're better at it.
Finally, there's the part where poor old Lilian's sickly mother and sister, pervy father, religious fundamentalist sister and not-particularly-agile boyfriend set up a series of events that ruins her life. And I can't think of a better author when it comes to writing melodramatic life ruination. It's when these books get dark, gruesome and miserable that they're at their cheesy best.
Good vs. Evil.......2004-08-20
This is another great VC Andrews book where basically good vs. evil. However, in this book, it didn't seem that good won out. We did however get a good look into the life of grandmother Culter who we met in the first two Cutler novels and get some back ground on her life. Why she became who she was...
It was a very good read, giving us readers a chance to actually get to like grandmother Cutler- who we all hated previously. There are moments in this novel that are so horrifying, you will be shocked. The whole time I was reading, I just wanted to get to the end and reach the conclusion I was waiting for.
Overall I enjoyed the Cutler series. I'd recommend it to teenagers and adults alike, if you like a good juicy, fun read.

Great Book.......2006-01-21
All Along I kept wondering what she had in store for the Khulinin clan after all she kept leaving spaces open in the other books to remind you of them. I loved how in this book she answered that question and also spread out into the world of the other people on the plains besides the clans. I do feel the book was a bit sketchy in places.Gabrial I thought could be a little stronger then she was and More info on the mysterious clan in the valley could have been told, but over all this was a good read.
great story, first one read though.......1999-09-28
I somehow stumbled onto this series and began with book three, City of the Sorcerors. I planned on reading the book again, as i do w/ most books i read. but, the book was lost, and i i could not finish, because i could not remember the titla, i recently found it and i am excited to read the entire series. :)
Good book for non-english readers........1998-08-26
The book is very good for non-english readers with medium level of English language. It has a thrilling plot, the language is rather easy (for camparison: I wrote down 20 words from 1 page while reading "The X-files" and 3 words from 1 page while reading this book). There aren't very many rare words (that I couldn't manage to find in my dictionary). I don't regret the time, I spend while reading this book.
Great Series gone wrong.......1997-10-03
I love the Dark Horse series, always have. Dark Horse and Lightening's Daughter were amazing. Valorian was passable, and City, well, it looked really promising. The old charachters were not true to type, and the new charachters... Hebert didn't do enough to really potray the complex charachter of Kelene, and the plot was very generic. The quality of writing also suffered. I was so disappointed with this book that I don't plan on reading Winged Magic, as Herbert seems to be groping for material and quality.

Creative marketing for small businesses.......2007-07-02
In a single, well-organized book, industry veteran Don Debelak answers all your questions about developing a marketing plan. And if you're a small-business owner, don't dismiss his book out of hand because you assume his ideas will be too expensive - he feels your pain. His advice is sophisticated yet cost-effective, and it does not rely on advertising or other pricey tactics. The book is structured clearly, with chapters on each aspect of the marketing plan. Worksheets, appendices and examples of actual marketing plans from companies that range from a coffee shop to an Internet company make its content hands on. We recommend this practical guide to new entrepreneurs and others who are looking to gain traction in the marketplace.
a user friendly marketing plan guide for small businesses.......2007-02-02
I am writing a marketing plan for a small business start-up. I tried using a more sophisticated marketing plan book ("The One Day Marketing Plan"), and got bogged down. I ended up using this book because it teaches a marketing plan format that is unambiguous, logical, and doable by a single person.
Althouth the book does not mention small businesses, I am going to go out on a limb and guess that Fortune 500 comapanies are not basing their marketing plans on this book.
A straight talking book that you can actually relate to!.......2000-05-31
There is no doubt that this author relates to the business owner's need for staying focused, being realistic, and creating profits.
I am a small business owner that has been through the bootstrapping and start up phases. This book is a practical guide for creating marketing plans that can actually be implemented without blowing your budget or hiring 50 people to get the job done.
It is an easy read. The author gives you example after example of plans that were developed by other companies. At the end of each chapter is a short but effective marketing questionnaire. These questionnaires really help you to stay focused on your company and get you involved.
The author brings a healthy urgency to having a customer driven marketing plan and shows you how to do it. It is a practical guide no matter what size your business.
Buy it, read it, and then do it.

Customer Reviews:
An Encyclopedia of Information.......2004-01-08
The book is simply superb. It is packed with valuable information presnted in an understandable, enjoyable format, and it contains great humor--which not only makes learning enjoyable, but increases the effectiveness of teaching actual content.
I have spent all of my life as an educator, and am constantly reviewing instructional materials. It is extremely rare to find an author that can break down complex material in such a manner that it is understandable to someone with little or no knowledge in the content area. To have that level of material presented in a sytle that makes learning fun as well as productive, is almost unheard of. Yet, that is exactly what Rob Weinberg has done in this book.
I enthusiastically recommned this book to anyone considering doing business on the Internet, anyone looking to invest in that market, and to professors and students in business schools throughout the country.
Not serious enough or detailed enough.......2003-01-17
This book has a lot of unique advice and information on starting up a company and creating an entire business plan, for either an outside investor, just a family member, or internal use only. However, it was not really focused on Dot Com companies like I hoped, and the tone of the book was much too joking for my liking. I like the Dummies books in general, which also offer jokes, but the author went a little overboard here. Too much of the text is fluff, which wastes time while reading each section. Also, I would have preferred serious and real life business plan examples in the appendix. Like I said, some of the advice is really useful when you find it, and it is written in a very easy to read by anyone manner, which might be helpful for some. I just expected a lot more judging by the reviews here.
A MUST READ for anyone revising their business plan.......2001-12-22
Whether for the entrepreneur or the established business, this is THE book to use when revising a business plan. Weinberg hits the mark again and again, and does so in a way that makes the reader feel he is speaking with an old friend - bad jokes and all. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know.
StreetSmart Internet Planning.......2001-11-20
For those of us who are street smart when it comes to entrepreneurship.
Don't be afraid of the title. Buy the book!.......2001-09-26
Don't let the somewhat unwieldy title put you off: the book delivers exactly what the title says it will. Weinberg's book is written in a friendly, conversational tone that is easy to digest. Another reviewer noted that he read Weinberg's book in a weekend. That is easy to do. Weinberg is a natural teacher. You may pick up his book expecting something akin to shoveling snow uphill in a New England winter but instead you find a voice that charms and entertains you, all the while teaching you what you need to know about getting your .com business up and running. I strongly recommend this book.
